Background

Chu Tiange was written as Chu Ge’s stand-in and the vessel for his aspirations. His original premise made him an Earth-born transmigrator familiar with cultivation-novel conventions. In reality, he was created within the novel, and his apparent memories of modern life consist of incomplete impressions rather than a lived past 2 306 317.

He began as a menial disciple of the Cloudreach Sect. An early incident earned Qiu Wuji’s appreciation, bringing him directly into the inner sect and giving him occasional personal instruction. Wang Ming was one of the early disciples Chu Ge arranged to bully him as a “stepping stone” in his rise 2 213.

Chu Ge originally intended multiple romantic relationships for him, including one with Qiu Wuji. Removing those prospects changed Chu Tiange’s thoughts without consistently changing the feelings or memories of the other people involved. Ye Xiaozhu, whose love for him existed from her earliest characterization, was particularly hurt by the revisions 261 388 396.

Appearance

  • Youthful appearance: Described as “plain-looking, but cheerful and resolute,” with brows and eyes modeled after Chu Ge’s. Qiu Wuji initially sees him as a younger version of his creator 17.
  • After his overseas journey: Becomes sturdier and more mature. His resemblance to Chu Ge remains, but Qiu Wuji increasingly recognizes them as distinct individuals 289.
  • In the Heavenly Court: Still appears ordinary beside the striking presence of Qiu Wuji and Yan Qianlie, prompting immortal officials to underestimate him on sight 459.

Personality

Chu Tiange is diligent without being reckless about his limitations. When granted access to the Scripture Pavilion’s third floor, he discovers that its methods exceed his understanding, keeps a manual for future study, and returns to the second floor to practice techniques appropriate to his level 18.

His loyalty is personal rather than merely institutional. He loves the Cloudreach Sect as his home, reveres Qiu Wuji as his teacher, and refuses rewards for bringing her something she needs. He declines the position of sect young master because he values pursuing the Dao over gaining power 289.

His strongest objection to Chu Ge concerns the human cost of treating the world as a story. He challenges the catastrophes arranged for his adventures because the victims are real people to him. He also resents having his thoughts rewritten and initially refuses to become anyone’s puppet 316 388.

After reconciling with Chu Ge, he distinguishes willing cooperation from coercion. He remains sarcastic and quick to complain about his creator’s interference, but accepts openly discussed arrangements and recognizes Chu Ge’s affection for his characters. His earlier conviction that romance obstructs cultivation gives way to acknowledging his love for Ye Xiaozhu 317 388 448 458 549.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship

Chu Tiange develops the Cloudreach Sect’s sword arts into a distinctive personal style approaching the Dao, with the bearing of a grandmaster 315.

  • Nine Swords of Split Light: Divides his sword attack into nine simultaneous streams, used against the Hydra’s separate heads 315 316.
  • Sword flight and sword-body unity: Travels on his sword and merges with it to launch concentrated charges 185 315.
  • Formation support: Skyreach City’s sword formation raises his offensive power beyond ordinary Deification limits, though it initially cannot penetrate the Hydra’s vital points 315.

White Tiger’s Legacy

Chu Tiange absorbs the sword intent within the White Tiger Fang before giving the fang to Qiu Wuji. The White Tiger later recognizes him as its inheritor 513.

  • Receives the White Tiger’s complete legacy during possession 526.
  • Acquires the True Meaning of a Hundred Weapons, extending his attainment beyond swordsmanship alone 526.
  • His weapons comprehension surpasses Qiu Wuji’s in that particular field, though he does not consider himself capable of defeating her 526.

Spatial and Temporal Arts

His spatial abilities emerge before his permanent breakthrough to Tribulation Transcendence 315 319.

  • Rudimentary spatial blinking: Uses short-range spatial movement during the Hydra battle 319.
  • Time-space comprehension: Studies Heavenly Court texts and Buddhist teachings deeply enough to understand the Heavenly Emperor’s principal laws, reducing their eventual confrontation to a difference in strength rather than an unbridgeable gap in technique 555.

Buddhist Arts and Disguise

Chu Tiange incorporates Buddhist methods and Kama’s intent into his broader cultivation 526.

  • Practices the Sutra of Bliss obtained in a small instance 505.
  • Transforms into Kama and imitates his cultivation aura closely enough to pass the Buddha Kingdom’s guards 511.
  • Uses that identity to gain Kṣitigarbha’s assistance in reaching the White Tiger Mausoleum 513.

Perception and Diplomacy

His growing awareness of the Heavenly Dao allows him to notice Chu Ge’s observation and question the inconsistencies in his own existence 290 304 316.

  • Secures the Dao Venerable’s agreement to an alliance with the Heavenly Emperor 534.
  • Recognizes the contest over divine offices as a struggle for control of the Heavenly Dao’s authority 526.
  • Builds a broad network of Heavenly Realm acquaintances while serving as Heavenly Observance Envoy, though those connections do not initially translate into loyal subordinates 536.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sword: His primary weapon, used for flight, divided sword attacks, and close combat; no personal name is provided in the supplied passages 185 315.
  • White Tiger Fang: Obtained overseas and given to Qiu Wuji for her ascension preparations after he absorbs its sword intent 289 513.
  • Snake Saliva Fruit: Keeps it for alchemy after Qiu Wuji tells him it is unnecessary for entering Fallen Dragon Pool 20.
  • Mystic Tier technique: Granted the right to select one alongside access to the Scripture Pavilion’s third floor 17 18.
  • Heavenly Court cultivation resources: Receives access to superior methods, treasures, pills, materials, and a private cultivation abode 460.
  • Kama’s golden pestle: Carries it while impersonating Kama in the Buddha Kingdom 511 514.
  • Nanotech armor: Takes Thomson’s armor after subduing him 420.
  • Violet Star Palace: Becomes his residence and administrative base following his imperial appointment 536.

Relationships

  • Chu Ge — Creator and father figure. Their relationship moves from suspicion and threatened resistance to negotiated cooperation; Chu Tiange eventually acknowledges him as his father while continuing to challenge his behavior 316 317 458 537.
  • Qiu Wuji — Sect leader, teacher, and eventual stepmother figure. He reveres her guidance, defends her even against the Dao Venerable, and receives her support when establishing his own imperial household 289 526 533 536.
  • Ye Xiaozhu — Childhood sweetheart and lover. His altered characterization leaves her waiting for years; recognizing his feelings for her becomes central to resolving his identity crisis 388 396 398. After ascending, he awaits her arrival in the Heavenly Realm 448 470.
  • Xie Yuner — Companion from Skyreach City and an intended romantic partner whose connection with him is disrupted by revisions. He asks Chu Ge to stop pushing her toward him 261 296 315 317.
  • White Tiger — Source of his inherited sword intent and complete weapons legacy 513 526.
  • Heavenly Emperor — Patron, employer, eventual adversary, and predecessor. His earlier favor makes the later betrayal painful; he ultimately passes the throne to Chu Tiange 470 549 559.
  • Kṣitigarbha — Helps him reach the imprisoned White Tiger and coordinates action against the corrupted Buddhist leadership 513 514.
  • Dao Venerable — Dangerous negotiating counterpart. Previously tries to kill him, later receives him as an envoy, and restrains his retaliatory attack after targeting Qiu Wuji 531 533 534.
  • Yan Qianlie — Fellow ascendant who brings wine to celebrate his appointment as Violet Star Great Emperor 536.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Early Adventures and the Overseas Journey

Chu Tiange discovers the lead concerning shed Azure Dragon scales in the Ten Thousand Snake Cavern. Qiu Wuji rewards him unusually generously, but later sends him away from Fallen Dragon Pool rather than allowing the planned romantic encounter to unfold 17 20.

During the conflict with Yan Qianlie, he brings the Poison-Hand Demon Lord’s primordial spirit into the Ninefold Burning Altar 127. He subsequently disappears from public view after fighting fiends in the far north. Qiu Wuji mobilizes the sect to protect him and announces that harming him will make the attacker an enemy of the entire Cloudreach Sect, although she already knows he has safely gone overseas 177.

After crossing the Endless Sea, he returns at Deification with the White Tiger Fang. He declines Qiu Wuji’s offer to make him sect young master, choosing instead to pursue the truth of Heaven 287 289.

Confronting His Creator

While defending Skyreach City from the Hydra, Chu Tiange displays unscripted techniques and a temporary Tribulation Transcendence state. Afterward, he deliberately meets Chu Ge while injured, hoping his weakened condition will help him restrain any impulse to attack 315 316.

He questions whether his Earth memories are genuine and condemns the deaths caused by Chu Ge’s plotted disasters. Misunderstanding his origins, he proposes that he may be an incarnation destined to be absorbed by his original body. Chu Ge tests his memories and confirms privately that they are fragmented inventions 316 317.

Divided Identity and Ye Xiaozhu

After outside interference exposes the changes to his characterization, Chu Tiange’s soul becomes divided between his original outline and his later, single-minded pursuit of the Dao. Qiu Wuji temporarily suppresses the original consciousness and asks him what he actually wants. He answers that he wants to find Ye Xiaozhu 388.

His estrangement from Chu Ge undermines the author’s control over the world. Reconciliation begins when Chu Tiange accepts guidance over major events in the hope that Chu Ge can reunite his divided Divine Soul and let him remain with Xiaozhu. Chu Ge’s connection to him returns, though not with enough strength to compel obedience 389 398.

Ascension and the White Tiger

Chu Tiange agrees to ascend after Ye Xiaozhu urges him not to delay his path for her. Chu Ge promises that she will be able to follow within six months 448.

In the Heavenly Court, he accepts the role of Heavenly Observance Envoy and investigates the apparent separation between the Heavenly and Mortal Realms 457 460 470. Sent west to investigate the White Tiger, he infiltrates the Buddha Kingdom as Kama and reaches its imprisoned True Spirit with Kṣitigarbha’s help. His inherited sword intent proves his identity and reveals to the White Tiger that the Mortal Realm still exists 511 513.

Violet Star Great Emperor

After gaining the White Tiger’s complete legacy, Chu Tiange negotiates an alliance between the Heavenly Emperor and the Dao Venerable. When the Dao Venerable attacks Qiu Wuji, he interrupts the negotiations to strike at him in defense of his teacher 526 533 534.

The Heavenly Emperor appoints him Emperor of Purple Tenuity, intending the overlapping authority to create conflict with Qiu Wuji. Instead, she supplies officials and openly supports him. His installation at Violet Star Palace draws congratulations from major Heavenly Realm factions 534 535 536.

Succession to the Heavenly Throne

Having reached Golden Immortal, Chu Tiange confronts the Heavenly Emperor and declares that his cooperation with Chu Ge is voluntary. Qiu Wuji joins him against the emperor, allowing him to escape the pressure of the Sword of Time and Space and continue the fight 549 555.

Mortally wounded by Qiu Wuji, the Heavenly Emperor ultimately passes the throne to Chu Tiange. Chu Tiange preserves his predecessor’s public dignity by declaring that he overcame an invading Outer Realms Demon and attained the Dao before death. The gathered soldiers salute him as “Your Majesty Ziwei,” but he later admits that he does not yet command universal allegiance 559 562.
