Background / History
Yan Qianlie began as a bandit before a Demonic Path group absorbed his band. In an environment where ruthlessness earned authority and favor, he distinguished himself through violence and eventually attracted the attention of a female elder of the Flame Prison Sect 264.
The elder, Qingyan, accepted him as a disciple while using him as a cultivation cauldron. Recognizing his exceptional talent, she trained and supplied him, but intended to refine his nascent soul into a pill to overcome her own cultivation bottleneck. During their final confrontation, she hesitated, allowing him to kill her 264 286.
Taking her resources, Yan Qianlie advanced rapidly and fought his way to leadership of the Flame Prison Sect. Killing his own master became a turning point: he reasoned that there was no one else he could not kill, and his ascent left an enormous number of victims behind him. Nevertheless, Qingyan’s hesitation continued to trouble him long after he became a feared Demon Lord 264.
Chu Ge had not written this earlier history. His original characterization began with Yan Qianlie already ruling the sect; the events preceding that point developed within the world itself 264.
Appearance
Yan Qianlie’s reconstructed Dharma Body is a towering, muscular figure deliberately fashioned to suit his own tastes 280.
- Hair and eyes: Flying red hair and large eyes likened to brass bells 280.
- Skin and markings: Bronze skin covered in profound crimson-dragon and flame patterns 280.
- Clothing: Often bare-chested; also wears a scarlet flame robe and ceremonial robes 280 287.
- Little Flame form: A small flame capable of expressive gestures, including folding its arms and sitting cross-legged inside the Soul-Reposing Pearl. He retains access to this form after rebuilding his body 164 280.
Personality
Yan Qianlie is domineering, bloodthirsty, foul-mouthed, and fiercely protective of his dignity. His violent temper does not make him indiscriminate or foolish: surviving the Demonic Path and becoming its foremost figure required caution, calculation, and the ability to assess unfamiliar threats before acting 162 264 281.
He respects strength while resisting permanent submission. After his failed rebellion against Chu Ge, he accepts the Heavenly Dao’s superiority only “for now.” Chu Ge reinforces this disposition through a character-setting revision that makes him willingly obedient until he can surpass the Heavenly Dao, without removing his underlying defiance 167.
His contempt for women is rooted partly in Demonic Path attitudes and partly in his experience as Qingyan’s cauldron. He initially dismisses Qiu Wuji’s reputation, but their confrontations force him to recognize her as the strongest opponent he has encountered. Qingyan’s return exposes a much more vulnerable side: he begs for help on her behalf and hesitates to ascend because he fears leaving her unprotected 127 264 404 450.
His eventual loyalty to Chu Ge becomes more than reluctant obedience. He defends Chu Ge’s treatment of others against the Heavenly Emperor’s coercion and later trusts that Chu Ge will recover Qingyan’s consciousness simply because he promised to do so 387 508.
Abilities & Skills
Demonic Flame Arts
Yan Qianlie’s principal combat discipline uses destructive flames, including the Purgatory Flame praised by Qiu Wuji 127.
- Forms savage flaming fists and fire dragons for direct attacks 127 386.
- Uses Ten Thousand Forms of Flame to change his flame’s shape, including assuming Little Flame form 280.
- Creates a fading flame illusion while moving his true body elsewhere, deceiving a descending Buddha during their battle 283.
- His erased White Flame could spread along Qiu Wuji’s flame-resistant sword and invade her meridians 127.
- His affinity with fire does not make him immune to superior flame laws: the Buddha’s lotus flames cause him genuine burning pain 283.
Nirvana and Rebirth
After recovering his Primordial Spirit, Yan Qianlie gains an understanding of rebirth that makes him exceptionally difficult to kill permanently 255.
- Can return from death wherever fire elements are present 255.
- An informed enemy could potentially wait at his resurrection site and attack again; he explicitly recognizes this vulnerability 255.
Crimson Dragon Purgatory Fire Dharma Body
His rebuilt body combines the Crimson Flame Dragon Bone with natural treasures collected by his followers 280.
- Withstands a Buddha’s vajra crushing power; its toughness is compared favorably with Heavenly Realm vajra dharma bodies 283.
- Does not eliminate the disadvantages of remaining unascended, particularly his incomplete understanding of higher laws 283.
- Cannot withstand the Heavenly Emperor’s concentrated dying counterattack without disintegrating 387.
Alchemy
Yan Qianlie’s pill-refining expertise surpasses that of the entire Cloudreach Sect, whose specialty lies in forging flying swords rather than medicine 168.
- Uses Danyang Soulfire to refine pills while confined beneath Qiu Wuji’s furnace 165.
- Helps refine the Three Souls and Five Aggregates Pill, which protects Golden Core cultivators against soul-seizing techniques 183.
- Combines his yang fire with Qingyan’s yin fire to improve pill quality 287.
Southern Pole Immortality Emperor Scripture
The scripture recovered from the Vermilion Bird’s tomb gives him access to aspects of its authority over souls, corpses, life, and death 491 498.
- Compresses an immense quantity of Corpse Accumulation Qi into a small mass held in his palm 498.
- Uses Soul Guidance to extract Qingyan’s Divine Soul from the body targeted by the Buddha Ancestor 508.
- Uses Corpse Manipulation, Return to the Source to revert her refined body into an empty Lotus Platform 508.
- Cannot personally separate Qingyan’s consciousness after it merges with the Vermilion Bird’s; he relies on Chu Ge’s promised intervention 508.
Deception and Infiltration
His reputation as Qiu Wuji’s mortal enemy makes him a convincing recruit for conspiracies against the Heavenly Dao 255 258.
- Pretends to cooperate with Venerable Green Snake while secretly working with Chu Ge and Qiu Wuji 258 259.
- Stages Chu Ge’s capture to draw out the conspirators’ intentions 258.
- Serves as Chu Ge’s contact for identifying cultivators and Overseas forces planning to defy Heaven 167 301.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Soul-Reposing Pearl — Houses his Little Flame form during recovery. Later used to shape Qingyan’s soul during her resurrection 164 183 285.
- Crimson Flame Dragon Bone — Obtained through the Green Snake operation and refined into the foundation of his new Dharma Body 259 280.
- Earthfire Lotus Platform — Acquired from Hongfa Temple and used as the foundation for Qingyan’s resurrection 283 285.
- Soul Banners — Arranged around the resurrection ritual alongside the Lotus Platform and Soul-Reposing Pearl 285.

- Southern Pole Immortality Emperor Scripture — His principal documented inheritance for controlling Corpse Accumulation Qi and exercising soul-guidance and corpse-manipulation laws 491 498 508.
Relationships
- Chu Ge — Creator, former target of rebellion, and eventual trusted superior. Their relationship develops into irreverent companionship, though Chu Ge deliberately maintains authority over him 164 264 404.
- Qingyan — Former master and cultivation exploiter, whom he killed and later resurrected. Becomes his wife; protecting her repeatedly outweighs his pride and desire for independence 264 286 287 450.
- Qiu Wuji — Longstanding enemy and respected rival. After defeating him, she becomes an uneasy collaborator in operations against Green Snake and in Qingyan’s resurrection 127 259 285.
- Great Compassion / Dabei — Initially associated with his enemies at Hongfa Temple. Provides the means and Buddhist treasures for Qingyan’s resurrection; later shares the assignment to establish the Underworld 281 285 570.
- Venerable Green Snake — Would-be recruiter who offers the Crimson Flame Dragon Bone in exchange for capturing Qiu Wuji’s disciple. Yan Qianlie deceives and attacks him instead 255 258 259.
- Heavenly Emperor — Attempts to recruit him against Qiu Wuji. Yan Qianlie turns on him and condemns his treatment of Xie Jiuxiao, suffering the destruction of his Dharma Body in return 386 387.
- Room Fire Pig — Subordinate whose faction Yan Qianlie absorbs into the Heavenly Realm’s Flame Prison Sect 490 491.
- Vermilion Bird — Source of his Heavenly Realm inheritance and the past-life identity whose awakened consciousness merges with Qingyan’s. He helps it escape but insists on receiving Qingyan back 491 499 508.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rivalry with Qiu Wuji
Chu Ge’s manifested presence seals the Heavenly Dao pact governing Yan Qianlie and Qiu Wuji’s wager. Yan Qianlie subsequently senses the Heavenly Dao himself and declares that he has reached Qiu Wuji’s level of awareness 32 57.
Before their decisive duel, Qiu Wuji outmaneuvers him, costing him subordinates and a prepared hidden move. In the final confrontation, his independently developed White Flame threatens her, prompting Chu Ge to erase the technique. Qiu Wuji pierces his heart, but his Primordial Spirit escapes; his defeat triggers an Orthodox Path offensive against the Demonic Path 116 127 128.
Escape into the Outside World
While wounded, Yan Qianlie exploits the spatial upheaval surrounding Qiu Wuji’s attempted ascension and the Heavenly Dao’s correction to cross the boundary. Mistaking the outside world for the Heavenly Realm, he instead finds sparse spiritual energy, worsening prospects for recovery, and no way to return 157.
He studies Esper Abilities at the Black Room before Qiu Wuji and Chu Ge recapture him. Their confrontation forces Chu Ge to explain that his world is a novel. Yan Qianlie challenges the fairness of allowing Qiu Wuji to escape while restricting everyone else, exposing a question Chu Ge cannot readily answer 162 164.
After learning that Chu Ge never planned his death in the human-realm outline, he bargains for survival. He becomes both a pill refiner and an investigator tasked with identifying others who have perceived the Heavenly Dao 165 167 168.
Green Snake’s Conspiracy and Qingyan’s Return
During his recovery, Yan Qianlie accepts an apparent conspiracy against Qiu Wuji in order to expose its participants. He obtains the Crimson Flame Dragon Bone, turns on Venerable Green Snake alongside Qiu Wuji, and survives the conspirator’s self-detonation 255 259.
After revealing his unresolved regret over killing his master, he asks Chu Ge to bring her back. With Chu Ge and Qiu Wuji accompanying him as attendants, he visits Hongfa Temple and obtains the Earthfire Lotus Platform. He then performs the resurrection ritual in the Heart of Blazing Flame 264 280 281 283 285.
The revived Qingyan confirms that she hesitated because she wanted to see what he would become. Their reunion leads to marriage, but her unusual ghost-cultivator existence creates a new problem: ordinary Mortal Realm cultivation methods cannot sustain her indefinitely 286 287.
War in Shenzhou
Yan Qianlie participates in the Demonic Path and Overseas war while remaining Chu Ge’s contact for anti-Heaven conspiracies. Chu Ge uses him to break a military stalemate by provoking Hydra and the Cyclops into targeting Hongfa Temple 301 314 354.
When the Heavenly Emperor attempts to enlist him against Qiu Wuji, Yan Qianlie attacks the Emperor instead. His Dharma Body is destroyed, but he openly defends Chu Ge as someone who helped restore his wife rather than coercing his followers. Chu Ge later restores his body and entrusts him with watching Shenzhou and investigating Vermilion Bird records 386 387 403 404.
Rise in the Heavenly Realm
After Qingyan challenges his fear of leaving her behind, Yan Qianlie follows Qiu Wuji through the newly opened Heavenly Gate. He fights his way south, reaches Profound Immortal, and becomes a rallying figure for the Heavenly Realm’s scattered demonic cultivators 450 471 489.
He absorbs Room Fire Pig’s followers, establishes a new Flame Prison Sect, and crosses a poisonous swamp using a bridge of skeletons. His inherited demonic flames open the Vermilion Bird’s tomb, where he acquires its fire seeds and scripture 490 491.
Qingyan and the Vermilion Bird
Temporal retracing reveals that Qingyan was born from the Vermilion Bird’s reincarnation. When she later ascends, Yan Qianlie receives her and helps awaken those memories, trusting Chu Ge’s assurance that their consciousnesses can eventually be separated 499 507.
He prevents the Buddha Ancestor from controlling her through the Lotus Platform by extracting her spirit and reverting her body. Unable to endure the ensuing Golden Immortal battle, he escapes with the Vermilion Bird through a passage Chu Ge prepared. He subsequently demands that Chu Ge resolve Qingyan’s merged consciousness rather than leave her subsumed 508 518.
Establishment of the New Order
Yan Qianlie watches the final struggle against the Heavenly Emperor from afar, recognizing that he cannot intervene at the protagonists’ level. After the realms are reorganized, Chu Ge assigns him, Dabei, and others to establish the Underworld and protect the new order 555 570.
