Background / History

Lost memories and remembered mission

Black Chi has lost many memories, including knowledge that might explain Pei Ye’s altered dantian. It remembers another name without revealing it and recalls a mission to kill the Supreme One True Dragon Immortal Lord. Unexplained memories of storybooks lead it to speculate that its soul may not have originated in its chi body 14 25.

Rescuing Pei Ye and forming the pact

Black Chi first appears in Pei Ye’s dream, carrying him away from an enormous bloody maw. It tells him to use Quail Head against Immortal Lord Spirit Summoning, helping him escape the ritual’s divine favor 2 4.

Pei Ye initially suspects that Black Chi is manipulating him or lending power at a hidden cost. Black Chi instead proposes reciprocal assistance: “I help you, then you help me.” It reveals a connection to the injured cat Pei Ye had treated, explaining that Pei Ye has already saved it in return 13 14.

They establish their pact when Pei Ye says “Pei Ye, Quail Head” and Black Chi responds “Mysterious Fire, Shi Shen.” A chi silhouette appears around the deep-blue light in Pei Ye’s dantian. Black Chi then advises him to seek an unusual replacement seed, believing the Torchworld Cult knows where to find one 14.

Conflict with Qiongqi

Black Chi identifies Qiongqi as the enemy that made the pact necessary. Qiongqi’s unnatural growth and newly acquired abilities had placed it under severe pressure. Its situation temporarily improves when Qiongqi divides its body and Black Chi gains strength through the pact 20.

When Pei Ye encounters Qiongqi’s duplicate, Black Chi urges him to flee rather than help Jing Ziwang. Pei Ye disregards the warning, and Jing Ziwang is killed. Black Chi laments their lack of trust but does not blame Pei Ye 20 21.

After learning that Qiongqi is returning to complete the Torchworld Cult’s ritual, Black Chi sets out to rescue Pei Ye. It eventually carries him toward Fenghuai, but Qiongqi and two purple-robed fighters ambush them. Despite grievous wounds, Black Chi fights back and attempts to escape with its pact partner 27 35 36.

Loss of the chi body

The consciousness awakening within Pei Ye takes control of him and uses frost to immobilize Black Chi. While its physical body is being carved apart, Black Chi enters Pei Ye’s mental realm, reveals the intrusion, and shelters his consciousness with Quail Head 36 37.

Black Chi identifies the possessing deity as its true target. It tells Pei Ye to survive and, if he escapes, find the cat at home to dissolve their contract. Its chi body dies and is converted into dragon blood, dramatically strengthening the Immortal Lord occupying Pei Ye 37.

After Ming Qitian rescues Pei Ye, he finds Little Chi alive in the black cat at Fenghuai’s County Office. Black Chi has transferred its soul into the animal, though it is exhausted 39.

Search in Fenghuai

From its cat body, Black Chi helps organize a search for an unidentified target sought by the Immortal Lord. It directs Pei Ye and the officials to follow infected hosts and seize the target before the deity arrives 43 44.

The clues include a wooden bead, a martial arts booklet, Ming Qitian, and a storybook. Black Chi considers Ming Qitian a likely target but cannot reconcile the other objects into a coherent explanation 47.

Appearance

Black Chi’s dragon body is slender, hornless, and likened to an exquisitely carved black-jade creature 14 36.

  • Scales: Gleam like jade; its body is described as hard as glazed glass 14 36.
  • Eyes: Clear green, resembling glass 14.
  • Mane: Long enough for Pei Ye to grip while climbing onto its back 36.
  • Cat body: A sleek black kitten with green eyes; Pei Ye recognizes Little Chi through those eyes after the soul transfer 39.

Personality

Black Chi is composed, direct, and pragmatic. It remains calm under severe injury and recognizes when escape matters more than winning a battle. Its insistence that Pei Ye withdraw from Qiongqi reflects both concern for him and the shared risk imposed by their pact 20 36.

It values trust and reciprocity but resists being treated as a pet or a predatory lender. Its exchanges with Pei Ye include dry sarcasm, teasing, and occasional embarrassment—particularly when admitting that it has fled too far away and does not know the route back 13 14 25 27.

Its attachment to Pei Ye ultimately outweighs resentment over his mistakes. It grants him Quail Head despite his disobedience, risks further wounds to rescue him, and tells him that confronting the Immortal Lord is not a burden he should have to bear 21 36 37.

Abilities & Skills

Chi Flame and Heat Control

Black Chi commands deep-blue flame blossoms and exercises precise authority over heat 36.

  • Melts Qiongqi’s frost during their clash 36.
  • Suppresses an enemy’s Bing Fire, then redirects its heat into a counterattack 36.
  • Splits heat into multiple clusters, guides them around obstacles, and changes their temperature before detonating them against an enemy 36.
  • Its flame can be extinguished by the dense, water-shaped Profound Qi wielded by a purple-robed opponent 36.

Quail Head

Black Chi temporarily holds Quail Head; it explicitly states that the ability is not its own 14.

  • Before the pact, Pei Ye cannot sustain the borrowed ability beyond twenty-four hours 13.
  • After the pact, Pei Ye can request it without that time limit, but Black Chi retains the power to refuse 21.
  • Helps Pei Ye read and break down an opponent’s movements 25.
  • Black Chi can activate it directly for Pei Ye, saving him from a concealed weapon in the arena 27.
  • Serves as the core of the shelter Black Chi constructs in Pei Ye’s mental realm 37.

Shared Fate of Flourishing and Decline

The pact binds Black Chi’s fate to Pei Ye’s and anchors Quail Head within Pei Ye’s dantian 14.

  • Requires both parties’ lives to have intertwined, with each entrusting life and death to the other 14.
  • Makes each partner bear the danger of the other’s death 20.
  • Supports their mental link, allowing communication and coordinated action 21 36.
  • Can be dissolved through the cat, according to Black Chi’s instructions to Pei Ye 37.

Flight and Physical Combat

Black Chi can carry Pei Ye through both dream skies and the physical world 2 35.

  • Uses aerial mobility to disengage from opponents on the ground 36.
  • Fights with claws, fangs, and its tough dragon body; it overwhelms Qiongqi after the latter loses the divine seed 36.
  • Its scales and flesh remain vulnerable to powerful blades, and accumulating wounds limit its ability to sustain combat 36.

Mental Intervention and Soul Transfer

Black Chi can enter dreams and Pei Ye’s mental realm 2 37.

  • Detects and explains the foreign consciousness influencing Pei Ye 37.
  • Builds a temporary mental shelter that keeps the deity’s shadow at bay, but does not restore Pei Ye’s bodily control 37.
  • Transfers its soul into the black cat when its chi body is lost 39.

Host Tracking

Black Chi can roughly locate searching hosts that contain fragments of its consciousness 43.

  • Uses their movements and selected objects to investigate the Immortal Lord’s target 43 44.
  • Cannot track Zhu Gaoyang by this method because he contains no such fragments 43.
  • Must deduce the target from clues, whereas the Immortal Lord can pinpoint it after touching enough related objects 44.

Relationships

  • Pei Ye — Rescued human and Shared Fate pact partner. Their early suspicion gives way to closer cooperation, though Pei Ye’s refusal to trust Black Chi’s warning has disastrous consequences 14 20 21.
  • Qiongqi — Longstanding enemy whose frost repeatedly clashes with Black Chi’s flame. Its abnormal growth drives Black Chi to seek a pact partner 20 36.
  • Supreme One True Dragon Immortal Lord — Target of Black Chi’s remembered mission. The deity consumes its chi body, but its soul survives 25 37 39.
  • Ming Qitian — Pei Ye’s rescuer, whom Little Chi immediately approaches in cat form. It purrs when she scratches its chin and settles on her lap 39.
  • Zhu Gaoyang — An indirect source of relief during Black Chi’s struggle with Qiongqi; Black Chi senses someone sharing the pressure before knowing who he is 25.
  • Xing Zhi and the Fenghuai officials — Cooperate with Black Chi’s effort to trace the Immortal Lord’s searching hosts 43 44.
