Background / History
Ming Qitian spent nearly twenty of her first twenty-one years on Cloud Lang Mountain, with little involvement in the mortal world. Her lucid state of mind first brought her to public attention by earning Heart-Slaying Glaze’s allegiance; she subsequently became known as the Sword Treatise’s successor and third on the Crane List 46.
Since childhood, she had trained against opponents several times stronger than herself. Before she descended the mountain to test her sword against the world, the Sword Lord taught her the Great White sword domain as a possible means of surviving an opponent beyond her realm 48.
Appearance
- White robes: Her characteristic clothing remains prominent in both the forest battle and her defense of Fenghuai 38 42 49.
- Bright, clear eyes: Her tranquil gaze and luminous face are repeatedly emphasized 38 46.
- Cool, clear voice: Pei Ye compares her voice to water, noting that it remains unchanged even after the rescue battle 39.
- Graceful movement: Her fighting figure is likened to a small white crane, while her swordplay evokes a heron, a cloud, or a long rainbow 38 48.
Personality
Ming Qitian’s defining quality is an innate clarity described as “bright mirror, ice reflection.” She understands danger without becoming troubled by fear, worry, gain, or loss. Xing Zhi initially mistakes her composure for sheltered ignorance, then realizes that Ming Qitian sees the situation clearly and simply does not agonize over it 46.
Her actions are direct and personal rather than governed by others’ expectations. She answers Pei Ye’s request by saving him—not by sacrificing him to destroy the divine seed. The narration explicitly distinguishes this choice from romantic affection or a desire to bestow a great favor. Likewise, she chooses to confront Fenghuai’s approaching enemy and continues reading while she waits 39 46.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship and the Sword Treatise
Her swordsmanship is described as “skill approaching the Dao.” She freely combines radically different styles; Pei Ye wonders whether such fluency would require consummate mastery of at least a thousand styles, though this is his inference rather than a confirmed count 38.
- Uses changing sword styles to answer unusual attacks, including a body capable of turning flesh and bone into flowing matter 38.
- Draws on the Sword Treatise, known as the “Master Principles of All Sword Combat Under Heaven,” to exploit narrow openings against the Immortal Lord 49.
- Can infuse an ordinary sword with true qi to immobilize Zhu Gaoyang’s transformed body 47.
Heart-Slaying Glaze and Mindscape Combat
Heart-Slaying Glaze can cut the possessing shadow within Pei Ye’s Mindscape Realm, allowing Ming Qitian to fight the Immortal Lord’s will without destroying its host 38 39.
- Enters Pei Ye’s Mindscape Realm without a contract, parasitism, or Quail Head; the mechanism is not explained 38.
- Removes the possessing shadow through repeated sword strikes aimed at his abdomen 38.
- Receives information from Glaze that Zhu Gaoyang’s Mindscape Realm still exists despite his transformation 46.
- Uses the sword defensively, but its mirrorlike guard is shattered by the strengthened Immortal Lord’s punch 48.
“Bright Mirror, Ice Reflection”
Her lucid state of mind is both a defining temperament and a defense against mental domination 46.
- Earned her Heart-Slaying Glaze’s allegiance 46.
- Leaves her wholly unaffected by the Immortal Lord’s attempt to control her through Quail Head 38 46.
- Does not protect her from physical injury, frost, flame, or overwhelming force 38 48 49.
Great White Sword Domain
One of the Seven Luminaries Sword Domains, taught to her by the Sword Lord before her departure from Cloud Lang Mountain. It severs those inside from heaven and earth, forcing the encounter back toward the combatants’ own strength 48.
- Intended to offer a small chance against an otherwise unbeatable higher-realm opponent 48.
- Is not a guaranteed counter to Sky Tower cultivators: some could dismantle it immediately, while others might need time 48.
- Cannot neutralize the Immortal Lord’s immense bodily strength or battle instincts 48.
- Leaves countless razor-sharp strands of Sword Qi around him after being shattered 48.
Commoner’s Sword
A killing strike recorded in Zhuangzi’s Sword Exegesis. Unlike her usual elegant swordplay, it abandons beauty and sword intent in favor of an austere, uncompromising attack 48.
- Resonates with the Great White domain’s association with slaughter 48.
- Is initially abandoned when the Immortal Lord closes in too quickly for her to complete the attack 48.
- Later erupts from concealment within the blade and briefly pierces his neck, but does not defeat him 49.
Wind Earl and Rain Master Sword-Sacrificing Manual
Learned while testing her sword at the Greater and Lesser Cloud Mountains six months earlier, this manual manipulates the world’s profound qi to influence wind and rain. Its principles touch the threshold of the Sky Tower Realm without establishing that she has entered it 48.
- Compresses air from over half of Fenghuai into a furious column of wind 48.
- Uses that wind to try to move the Immortal Lord away from the town rather than primarily to injure him 48.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Heart-Slaying Glaze — Her signature sword, capable of attacking a possessing consciousness. The Immortal Lord eventually seizes it, coats it with dragon frost, and throws it through her body 38 46 49.
- White jade Sword Talisman — Given to Pei Ye at their first meeting. It requires true qi to activate and carries his recorded plea for rescue to her 15 31.
- Borrowed sword — Temporarily replaces Heart-Slaying Glaze as the weapon pinning the transformed Zhu Gaoyang to the ground 47.
Relationships
- Pei Ye — A young swordsman she first advises through a wall. She later prioritizes his survival over destroying the divine seed, an act that profoundly changes his understanding of his own worth 15 38 39.
- Sword Lord — Guides her preparation for encounters beyond her realm and teaches her the Great White sword domain 48.
- Xing Zhi — Coordinates with her during Fenghuai’s crisis. Xing Zhi helps her escape Qiongqi, comes to understand her temperament, and later rescues her from attacking monsters 39 46 49.
- Zhu Gaoyang — Recognizes her name as a potential means of saving himself and Pei Ye. After his transformation into a Frost Wraith, she subdues and preserves him because his Mindscape Realm remains 31 46 47.
- Black Chi / Little Chi — After transferring their soul into a black cat, readily accepts her affection, purring under her touch and settling on her lap 39 42.
- Yue Muzhou — Discusses a Buddhist text with her and offers to teach the state of “Buddha Regards Me.” The conversation is interrupted by an attack; her attainment of that state is not shown 46 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Search for Endowed Fortune
Ming Qitian arrives in Fenghuai on a private matter and asks Pei Ye about rumors of a remarkable book or martial art. Her inquiry concerns the Dantian Seed Immortal Method, later identified as Endowed Fortune. She comments on his sword practice and leaves him a Sword Talisman before continuing her search 15 30 31 47.
Rescue on Xin Cang Mountain
Zhu Gaoyang activates the talisman so Pei Ye can request help. Ming Qitian promises to arrive before sunrise and reaches them well before that deadline 31 32 39.
She battles the Immortal Lord inside both Pei Ye’s body and his Mindscape Realm, passing up lethal openings against the host to remove the possessing shadow. When the Lord transfers into Qiongqi, she completes Pei Ye’s release at the cost of taking a claw strike, then carries him away. Xing Zhi uses Zhu Gaoyang’s Teleportation Talisman to bring all three near Fenghuai 38 39.
Defense of Fenghuai
The Immortal Lord’s searching hosts single out Ming Qitian, leading Xing Zhi to suspect that she may be the threat he descended to destroy. This remains a conjecture, not a confirmed identification. Ming Qitian refuses refuge, subdues the transformed Zhu Gaoyang without killing him, and agrees to meet the enemy outside town to limit collateral damage 44 46 47.
Above Fenghuai, she tries to shift the battlefield with wind and isolate the Lord through the Great White sword domain. His physical strength overwhelms her with a single punch. Her concealed Commoner’s Sword briefly wounds his neck, but he retaliates by impaling her with Heart-Slaying Glaze. Unable to stop his transformation of townspeople into monsters, she is ultimately carried to safety by Xing Zhi 48 49.
