Background / History
Divine Capital Mission
Xing Zhi arrives in Fenghuai with the Divine Capital’s investigative party. Its mission concerns an Immortal Hunter detected in the Firewood-Cang Mountains; the party also takes over the local Torchworld Cult case because the two matters may be connected 16 17.
When Jing Ziwang demands Pei Ye’s arrest, Xing Zhi eases the confrontation by offering to examine him. Her tests show that the spectral-blue substance in his arm and dantian consumes spiritual energy. She proposes that he may be able to command it like true qi and argues that a human-shaped Dragon Tongue would possess independent freedom rather than remain under the cult’s control 16 17.
White Bamboo Village and the Search for Zhu Gaoyang
After reports of a murderous demon tiger, Xing Zhi orders Shang Lang to muster the Dragon Martial Army and joins the expedition to White Bamboo Village. She sends her Soul Bird to summon Zhu Gaoyang, who has gone ahead to investigate suspected Torchworld Cult activity 18.
At the village, she detects residual spiritual energy in a victim’s frostbitten wound. The Soul Bird then returns carrying her original message, revealing that it could not find Zhu. Xing Zhi assumes command, sends four soldiers back to Fenghuai by separate routes, and orders the remaining party into the mountains. She prioritizes finding Zhu over hunting the tiger, despite objections from Jing Ziwang and Shang Lang 19.
The search lasts more than a day and brings repeated clashes with Torchworld Cult followers. By the time Pei Ye finds the squad, only four soldiers remain, Shang Lang is badly wounded, and Xing Zhi’s spellcasting has slowed from exhaustion. Pei Ye saves her from a lethal attack, then tells her that Zhu died holding off their pursuers 35.
Escape and Recovery
Xing Zhi corrects Pei Ye’s understanding of Endowed Fortune: it grows a Dantian Seed rather than granting control over one. Her knowledge comes from surviving accounts of a Dragon Lord Dongting predecessor who practiced the art six hundred years earlier 36.
After Qiongqi attacks, Xing Zhi separates from the retreating group and returns alone. She uses the Teleportation Talisman Zhu entrusted to her to carry herself, Pei Ye, and Ming Qitian to a mountain near Fenghuai. At the County Office, she offers her medical expertise rather than calling for a physician 39.
Defense of Fenghuai
Xing Zhi warns Vice Prefect Xu Weizhou that the awakened will within the seed can grow by devouring people and may attack Fenghuai. She demands that he fulfill his official duty instead of expecting Ming Qitian to bear the danger in his place 41.
Following Black Chi’s instructions, she coordinates surveillance of the Immortal Lord’s infected hosts. Their movements and collected objects lead her to suspect that Ming Qitian is the Lord’s target. She considers sending Ming away to protect the town, but Ming chooses to remain and fight 43 44 45 46 47.
When a powerful Frost Wraith attacks the County Office, Xing Zhi’s spells fail to stop it. Ming subdues it, and Xing Zhi recognizes Zhu Gaoyang beneath the transformation. She begs Ming to spare him; learning that his Mindscape Realm survives gives her hope that his consciousness can be recovered. She subsequently asks Chang Zhiyuan to station guards and prevent anyone from removing the sword restraining him 46 47.
During the Immortal Lord’s assault, Xing Zhi waits for an opening and rescues the wounded Ming Qitian from attacking monsters 49.
Appearance
- Gentle eyes and slender hands: Her calm expression accompanies her reassuring manner during Pei Ye’s examination 17 18 35.
- Travel-worn condition: During the mountain search, grass stains and gray dirt cover her boots and trousers, her face darkens, and her expression becomes hard and sharp-eyed 35.
- Waist-mounted weapon: She carries a jade-green short sword 35.
Personality
Xing Zhi is normally gentle in conversation but decisive in command. She reassures Pei Ye, checks whether he understands the expedition’s risks, and knows enough about his circumstances to ask after his elderly family member. Yue Muzhou perceives her as sharp, sensible, and orderly, with quick footsteps and speech that is fast but clear 17 18 50.
Her judgment can be ruthlessly practical. At White Bamboo Village, she openly places Zhu Gaoyang’s life above others and refuses to delay his rescue. She is equally uncompromising toward officials who evade responsibility, sharply rebuking Xu Weizhou when he resists taking action 19 41.
Zhu is also her greatest emotional vulnerability. His disappearance strips away her usual calm, news of his death leaves her speechless, and seeing his transformed body finally breaks the composure she maintained while managing Fenghuai’s crisis. The text establishes deep personal attachment without explicitly defining their relationship as romantic 35 46.
She treats cultivation as a practical tool rather than a lifelong passion. Her skepticism about immortals likewise rests on evidence: she initially denies that any true immortal has appeared, but later acknowledges the powerful will within the seed without treating its title of “Immortal Lord” as proof of divinity 17 41 46.
Abilities & Skills
Cultivation and Spellcasting
- Xing Zhi has not yet entered the Profound Gate in the documented chapters. A prediction that she will reach it before thirty is praise for her potential, not a recorded breakthrough 46.
- Her water manipulation is exceptionally precise: she controls numerous slender streams independently to maintain a complex restraint 19.
- She can release a restraining spell and an attacking spell simultaneously, even when startled by an ambush 46.
- Prolonged fighting depletes her spiritual power and slows her casting, leaving her vulnerable when enemies breach her protection 35.
Water Autumn Lotus
A restraining spell from the Autumn Water Chapter of the Autumn Water Jade Dragon Scripture 46.
- Uses water to form intricate, persistent bindings; at White Bamboo Village, a single vat supplies enough water to restrain a scaled humanoid for a soldier’s halberd strike 19.
- Its strands are compared to tough spider silk, but the transformed Zhu Gaoyang tears through them without resistance 46.
Cold Mist on Rippling Waters
An offensive spell from the same scripture chapter as Water Autumn Lotus 46.
- Produces faint white ribbons described as thin as gauze and sharp as ice 46.
- Complements Water Autumn Lotus, allowing Xing Zhi to attack while attempting to immobilize a target 46.
Examination and Supernatural Research
- Probes blood vessels with needles formed from spiritual energy and examines the dantian with a gentler, mist-like infusion 17.
- Detects residual spiritual energy by inserting a physical needle into a wound and testing it in a pale-blue liquid 19.
- Draws on Immortal Platform research into the Dragon Tongue and Dragon Lord Dongting records concerning Endowed Fortune 17 36.
- Distinguishes conjecture from established knowledge, admitting that her Dragon Tongue theory does not explain the ritual’s twelve sacrifices 17.
Medicine and Coordination
- States that she is versed in medicine and helps treat injuries after returning to Fenghuai 39 40.
- Organizes troops, emergency messengers, and surveillance teams 18 19 43.
- In the host-tracking operation, prioritizes recording destinations and searched-for objects over preventing further spread, because the hosts can reveal the Immortal Lord’s objective 43.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Jade-green short sword — Carried at her waist as a close-range fallback. She rarely needs to draw it when partnered with Zhu Gaoyang 35.
- Soul Bird — A blue-green messenger bird with golden-yellow eyes, a gold leg band engraved with her name, and a decorative ribbon. It carries rolled messages in its throat 18 19.
- Wrist-tied jade bead — Used to summon the Soul Bird with a clear whistle 18.
- Notebook — Records observations from her examination of Pei Ye’s spectral-blue energy 17.
- Testing needle and glass gourd — The gourd contains a pale-blue, viscous liquid that boils when the needle introduces residual spiritual energy 19.
- Teleportation Talisman — Given to her by Zhu Gaoyang and inscribed with Luminous Spirit Illuminates the World, Unbound by Dust. She expends it to escape Qiongqi with Pei Ye and Ming Qitian 39.
Relationships
- Zhu Gaoyang — Her senior brother and frequent partner. His importance to both her and Dragon Lord Dongting drives her determination to find him; his fate repeatedly overwhelms her usual composure 19 35 46.
- Pei Ye — Initially her examinee and a potential expedition liability, later her rescuer. Their cooperation centers on understanding the seed and surviving the Torchworld Cult crisis 17 35 36 39.
- Shang Lang — Expedition colleague who calls her “Sister Xing Zhi.” They coordinate soldiers and support each other in battle, though he challenges her decision to abandon the village’s tiger hunt 18 19 35.
- Jing Ziwang — Fellow expedition leader whose willingness to confront the demon tiger clashes with her caution and prioritization of Zhu’s rescue 18 19.
- Ming Qitian — Ally whose detached calm Xing Zhi initially misreads as sheltered ignorance. She comes to recognize Ming’s clarity and fearlessness, and later rescues her during the assault on Fenghuai 46 49.
- Chang Zhiyuan — Local official with whom she coordinates recovery, crisis planning, and the guarding of the restrained Zhu Gaoyang 39 41 47.
- Xu Weizhou — Vice prefect whose evasiveness draws her harsh criticism. She insists that official responsibility cannot simply be shifted onto Ming Qitian 41.
- Black Chi — Source of intelligence about the Immortal Lord’s searching hosts; Xing Zhi relays their instructions to the assembled investigators 43 44.
