Background / History

Death and Rebirth

After Nezha killed Ao Bing, the East Sea Dragon King’s third son, the Four Seas Dragon Kings flooded Chentang Pass. To prevent his mother and the town’s people from being implicated, Nezha stripped out his bones to return them to his father and cut away his flesh to return it to his mother. Lady Yin subsequently built a temple so incense offerings could reconstruct his golden body, but Li Jing destroyed it, cutting off that route to resurrection 13.

Taiyi Zhenren protected Nezha’s deteriorating remnant soul and offered to create a Lotus Incarnation. However, he admitted that the new body would not allow Nezha to defeat Li Jing soon, given Li Jing’s divine office and Demon-Suppressing Pagoda. Refusing that outcome, Nezha followed a mysterious voice to the ruined Mountain God Temple thirty li east of Guanjiangkou 13.

There, Nezha offered his soul as incense and became Gu Changqing’s second disciple. Gu Changqing taught him the Self-Manifestation Technique, turning the resentment consuming his soul into the foundation of a new demonic body 13.

Peach Mountain

Nezha reached Peach Mountain through his father-son karmic connection with Li Jing. His technique turned Li Jing’s guilt into inner demons, leaving the heavenly marshal kneeling, striking himself, and begging for mercy. The collapse of Li Jing’s control also created an opening for Yang Jian to destroy the Heavenly River Sea-Covering Grand Formation 15.

Recognizing Yang Jian as a fellow disciple, Nezha acknowledged him as his senior brother. He spared Li Jing temporarily, intending to settle the debt further by destroying his pagoda and stripping his divine position. He then absorbed the navy’s remaining formation power and promised to accompany Yang Jian against Haotian 16.

When Randeng attempted to suppress him, Nezha exploited the Daoist’s obsession with Sainthood, seized the Qiankun Ruler, and obtained a wisp of primordial-spirit Dao fire. Zhunti’s manifestation intervened and nearly destroyed him, forcing Nezha to call for his master. Gu Changqing’s remote intervention broke the Saint’s lock on him, and Zhunti withdrew 20 21 23.

The encounter exposed Nezha’s limits: his technique could overcome Randeng’s defenses, but his cultivation could not yet sustain a confrontation with a Saint. Gu Changqing instructed him to refine his spoils gradually because a Quasi-Saint’s heavy karma could cause backlash 23.

Seizure of the Four Seas’ Water Veins

Gu Changqing sent Nezha to settle his grievance with the Dragon Clan and bring the Four Seas’ water veins under his control. His instructions allowed survival for dragons who submitted rather than demanding their extermination 23.

Nezha breached the East Sea Dragon Palace, broke its defenses, drained most of the Array-Commanding Dragon Prince’s cultivation, and defeated Ao Guang. The other Dragon Kings answered Ao Guang’s blood signal and joined him in forming the Four Seas Cage 24 26.

Although the cage disrupted his karmic manifestations and nearly ground his body apart, Nezha entered its core and turned its refining power to his own use. He reconstructed his body, incorporated his captured treasures, and wrested control of the water veins from the Dragon Kings. He left them alive and reported success to Gu Changqing before an ancient dragon emerged from the East Sea Eye to challenge him 26 28.

Defense of Three Mountains Pass

Following Yin Jiao’s request for reinforcements, Gu Changqing called Nezha out of seclusion beneath the East Sea. Nezha agreed to defend Three Mountains Pass without destroying Yin Shang’s dynastic foundations and confronted Xiqi’s three-hundred-thousand-strong army 61.

Jin Zha and Mu Zha tried to persuade him to return through appeals to blood ties and the Chan Sect. Nezha rejected their authority, accusing them of standing aside during his suffering. He declared that neither the Li family nor the heavenly mandate governed his fate, acknowledging only his master at Guanjiangkou 63.

Nezha destroyed his brothers’ weapons barehanded, survived Jiang Ziya’s God-Beating Whip without injury, and drove Xiqi into retreat. The Central Wuji Apricot Yellow Banner prevented him from killing Jiang Ziya, but Xiqi still raised a Truce Banner and sought Yuanshi Tianzun’s intervention 65 67 69.

Taiyi Zhenren subsequently ambushed Nezha with the Nine Dragon Divine Fire Cover, intending to erase his demonic cultivation and remake him as a Chan Sect pawn. Yang Jian sent Yuan Hong, the Mount Mei forces, and a hundred thousand Demon Soldiers to rescue him. With Xiaotian Dog devouring the cover’s fire dragons and the reinforcements attacking outside, Nezha cracked the treasure from within and escaped 71 72 74 75.

Taiyi fled to Kunlun after the ensuing defeat. Nezha returned to Three Mountains Pass with his allies, warning Jiang Ziya not to cross his boundary again 78.

Destruction of Xiqi’s Supply Camp

On Yin Jiao’s orders, Nezha attacked Xiqi’s supply camp to sever its supplies and retreat. His Karmic Fire overcame the defending water barriers and killed one Chan Sect immortal; he captured the remaining immortals with the Universe Ring. After burning the grain, fodder, wagons, and fortifications, he delivered the captives to Yin Jiao 165.

Battle Against the Western Sages

Nezha and Yang Jian joined Kong Xuan against Zhunti in Chaos. After Yang Jian embedded the Spear of the Nether God in Zhunti’s golden body, Nezha assumed his Demon Venerable Dharma Form, seized the spear, and tore away a portion of the body and Sage Origin. Zhunti could no longer sustain his Dharma Form 178 179.

Jieyin’s arrival turned the battle into a stalemate. Nezha helped identify openings in the Golden Lotus’s defenses and harassed Jieyin with demonic fire while his companions exploited those openings. The conflict ended with the Western Sages escaping Gu Changqing’s killing formation at the cost of part of their origins, then sealing Spirit Mountain and withdrawing from worldly affairs 180 182.

Appearance

  • Initial remnant soul: A broken spectral figure with illusory red silk around his shoulders and the shadow of a Fire-Tipped Spear in his hand 13.
  • First demonic body: Youthful, wearing a red bellyband and an upward-pointing topknot, with a pitch-black mark between his brows. His Wind-Fire Wheels and spear burn with black-and-red demonic flames 15.
  • After the Four Seas reforging: Demonic marks cover his left arm, dark gold flows across his right, and Yuqing fire intent appears on his chest. His brow mark gains a dark-gold tint 28.
  • At Three Mountains Pass: Wears black armor traced with dark-gold demonic markings. His face retains a boyish quality, contrasting with his cold gaze and flame-filled eyes 61.
  • Expanded combat forms: Three heads and six arms, blue faces, and protruding fangs; his enormous Demon Venerable form has six open eyes and burns with black-and-red flames 165 179.

Personality

Nezha is fiercely defiant toward authority founded on bloodline, divine office, or heavenly mandate. His hostility toward Li Jing comes from the destruction of his final chance at resurrection, while his rejection of his brothers reflects their silence during his suffering. He likewise refuses to accept the Chan Sect’s claim that his ordained role gives it ownership over his fate 13 63.

His brutality toward enemies contrasts with his devotion to Gu Changqing. He bows in gratitude for his rebirth, treats attacks on his master’s standing as personal insults, and follows instructions to spare the Dragon Kings despite his old grievances. His camaraderie with Yang Jian includes teasing and brief envy, but his senior brother’s growth ultimately strengthens his enthusiasm for their shared cause 13 19 28.

Nezha enjoys provoking powerful opponents and frequently mocks them during battle. Nevertheless, he can acknowledge a genuine disadvantage: after facing Zhunti, he openly admits that he could not have survived without his master’s intervention 20 23 180.

Abilities & Skills

Self-Manifestation Technique

Gu Changqing’s technique converts resentment into a battle body and allows Nezha to nourish himself with enemy power. Its combat invocation is “Self-Transformation into Freedom” 13 20.

  • Karmic attacks: Uses Li Jing’s father-son debt to ignite inner demons despite the protection of his heavenly office 15.
  • Obsession manifestation: Recreates Randeng’s ideal self and longing for Sainthood, turning those desires against his Dao heart and treasure patterns 20.
  • Mass manifestations: Produces countless demonic shadows, including spear-bearing and Wind-Fire Wheel-riding forms 63 64.
  • Limits: The Four Seas Cage disrupts its karmic pull, preventing the Dragon Kings’ inner demons from coalescing. At his early cultivation level, Zhunti can immobilize both Nezha and his demonic shadow 21 26.

Demonic Body and Refinement

  • Absorbs hostile formation power and military fiendish aura to strengthen his reconstructed body 16.
  • Uses his body as a furnace to integrate treasure Dao patterns, primordial-spirit fire, and water origins, even after repeated bodily destruction 26 28.
  • Suppresses and destroys the Dunlong Stake and a Wu Gou Sword with his bare hands 65.
  • Unifies resentment, body, and true spirit under his master’s primordial Dao resonance, preventing Jiang Ziya’s God-Beating Whip from harming him 67.
  • Limits: Overly rapid absorption of Quasi-Saint karma risks backlash. The Nine Dragon Divine Fire Cover also scorches his armor and substantially exhausts him 23 78.

Demonic and Karmic Fire

  • His early demonic flames replace the Samadhi True Fire associated with his Wind-Fire Wheels 15.
  • Gu Changqing later transforms Karmic Fire for him through a mythic art. Fused with Nezha’s demonic thoughts, it burns Heavenly Dao magical power and destroys Chan Sect Dao foundations 165.
  • During the battle with Zhunti, black flames formed from Samadhi True Fire and demonic thoughts cling to the golden body and burn its Sage Origin 179.

Four Seas Water-Vein Control

  • Takes command of the cyan, crimson, white, and black water veins previously controlled by the Four Seas Dragon Kings 28.
  • Incorporates the Four Seas’ water origins into his reforged spear and projects his report to Gu Changqing through the waterways 28.

Three Heads and Six Arms

  • Uses a three-headed, six-armed form during the attack on Xiqi’s supply camp 165.
  • Combines unpredictable movement, Universe Ring restraints, and flame attacks when fighting Zhunti 179.

Demon Venerable Dharma Form

  • Manifests the Origin Dharma Form of a Chaos Demon God fused into his True Spirit by Gu Changqing 179.
  • Expands to tens of millions of zhang and applies all six arms to tear apart Zhunti’s already-impaled golden body 179.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Fire-Tipped Spear — His principal weapon. Reforged with the Qiankun Ruler’s remnant projection in its shaft, Randeng’s Dao fire at its tip, and four-colored sea moisture forming its tassel 15 28.
  • Wind-Fire Wheels — Aerial movement equipment wreathed in black-and-red demonic flames 15 23 178.
  • Universe Ring — Splits into hundreds of rings to bind fleeing Chan Sect immortals; later restrains the arms of Zhunti’s Dharma Form 165 179.
  • Black armor — Bears dark-gold Dao markings that erase the God-Beating Whip’s mark, though Samadhi True Fire leaves visible scorch marks 67 74.
  • Qiankun Ruler — Seized from Randeng and used against the East Sea Dragon Palace’s defenses before being refined into Nezha’s body and spear 20 24 28.
  • Randeng’s primordial-spirit Dao fire — Captured after their confrontation and subsequently integrated into Nezha’s primordial spirit and weapon 23 28.

Relationships

  • Gu Changqing — Current master and source of his rebirth. Nezha acknowledges his authority above the Li family, the Chan Sect, and the heavenly mandate 13 63.
  • Yang Jian — Senior fellow disciple and battlefield ally. Yang Jian arranges reinforcements when Nezha is trapped, and the pair later fight the Western Sages together 16 72 179 180.
  • Kong Xuan — Senior fellow disciple and partner in the coordinated assault on Zhunti and Jieyin 180 183.
  • Li Jing — Father and bitter enemy. Nezha spares him at Peach Mountain only because he considers the debt between them unfinished 13 16.
  • Lady Yin — Mother; builds his temple after his death in an attempt to restore him through incense offerings 13.
  • Jin Zha and Mu Zha — Elder brothers whose claims of familial authority he rejects. He defeats and wounds them at Three Mountains Pass 63 65.
  • Taiyi Zhenren — Former master turned enemy. Taiyi attempts to destroy Nezha’s demonic foundations and force him back into the Chan Sect’s planned role 25 71 72.
  • Yin Jiao — Fellow disciple and Human Emperor. Nezha answers his request for aid and later destroys Xiqi’s supply camp under his orders 61 165.
  • Yuan Hong and Xiaotian Dog — Allies who help break Taiyi’s trap and defeat him outside Three Mountains Pass 74 75 78.
  • Ao Guang and the Four Seas Dragon Kings — Former persecutors whose control of the water veins Nezha takes away; he leaves them alive in accordance with his master’s objective 23 28.
  • Zhunti — Enemy who nearly destroys him at Peach Mountain. Nezha later helps inflict severe damage on his golden body and Sage Origin 21 179.
