Location and Layout
Guanjiangkou Temple
- Setting: A solitary temple on Barren Mountain in Guanjiangkou, within Southern Jambudvipa 83 122.
- Approach: Stone steps lead to weathered doors; moss, broken tiles, and a damaged roof preserve its appearance as an abandoned mortal shrine 108 124.
- Main hall: Contains the altar, Divine Statue, offering table, and Incense Burner. Dust and cobwebs remain visible even after the temple acquires formidable defenses 17 109 124.
- Rear mountain: Houses the Demon Camp where Yang Jian settles the gathered Demon Host of Mount Mei. The incense Divine Realm suppresses their unruly demonic auras 72.
Chaoge Temple
- Setting: Located in the Mass Burial Grounds outside Chaoge, where Yin Jiao’s jade talisman leads the fleeing princes 35 40 41.
- Connection: Its statue and Incense Anchor transmit the brothers’ Vow Power to Gu Changqing at Guanjiangkou, allowing him to intervene remotely 37 38.
- Guardians: Yang Jian and Xiaotian Dog remain there under orders to safeguard the princes’ path after their departure for Chaoge 41.
- Visitors: Tongtian encounters Gu Changqing through this temple’s Divine Statue 43 49.
Appearance
- Exterior: Mottled walls, rotten doors and windows, missing roof tiles, and hanging spider silk make the temple appear unremarkable even to visiting immortals 7 108.
- Original idol: A dust-covered clay statue stands on the altar. Its eyes shine gold when Gu Changqing first answers Yang Jian 1.
- Concealed transformations: Gu Changqing seals breakthrough phenomena inside the Divine Realm, leaving the outside looking dilapidated 17.
- Dao-bearing details: Spider silk carries spatial Dao patterns, wind contains traces of time, and individual grains of incense ash conceal karma 102 109.
Defenses and Functions
Divine Realm
The temple is the center of Gu Changqing’s protected domain, rather than merely a building sheltered by a formation 5 84.
- Initially extends ten li around the Divine Statue, later expanding to three thousand li 5 49.
- Obscures heavenly secrets and blocks investigative divine sense; Yu Ding Zhenren cannot penetrate its barrier 5 7.
- Uses incense as its guide, earth veins as its framework, and karma as its lock to identify intruders without its master appearing 84.
- Restricts hostile treasures: Maitreya struggles even to open the Human Seed Bag within its influence 84.
Karmic Concealment
- The Divine Statue’s purple-gray Dao resonance blocks Tongtian’s saintly sense and conceals its karma 43.
- During Tongtian’s audience, the temple appears temporarily removed from the Primordial World’s karmic plane, preventing the Heavenly Dao from hearing the discussion 45.
- Yuanshi Tianzun finds no accessible karma, allotted fate, or Heavenly Dao records for the temple 124.
- Even Hongjun later fails to locate it precisely, discerning only the vague direction of Southern Jambudvipa 161.
Incense and Dao Transmission
- Incense offerings can establish master-disciple karma, as Yang Jian’s offering does at the outset 1.
- The Chaoge Incense Anchor carries prayers to Guanjiangkou and serves as a channel for Gu Changqing’s divine sense 37 43.
- Tongtian offers three sticks of mortal incense before receiving the Foundations Volume of the Mythic Great Luo Technique 47 48.
- Kong Xuan’s admission requires the Seeking the Dao Incense to burn its full nine inches; it completes only after he relinquishes his immediate desire for protection and victory over Zhunti 136.
Offensive Protection
- Chaos Sword Qi destroys the hundred-thousand-strong Heavenly Punishment Army and the Haotian Mirror Emperor Shadow 85 86.
- Incense ash and purple-gray Dao patterns stop Yuanshi Tianzun’s Saint Light at the approach to the temple 123 124.
- The Divine Realm swallows Heavenly Dao thunder punishment, including its destructive laws and a sliver of the Heavenly Dao’s authority of judgment 124.
- Gu Changqing’s subsequent sword strike leaves Yuanshi unable to cross the final three feet to the temple 127.
History
Yang Jian’s Refuge
Gu Changqing transmigrates into the temple’s clay idol and spends countless years unable to act. Farmers, scholars, and travelers offer prayers, but none provides enough Vow Power to awaken his system 1.
Yang Jian arrives bloodied, carrying an unconscious Yang Chan. His karmic incense and plea for the strength to rescue his mother prompt Gu Changqing to answer and accept him as a disciple. Heavenly Court soldiers threaten to demolish the temple, but Yang Jian defeats them with the Divine Elephant Suppressing Prison Force 1 2 3 4.
After defeating Giant Spirit God, Yang Jian plants a fragment of the Mountain-Splitting Giant Axe at the entrance as a warning. He leaves Yang Chan under Gu Changqing’s protection while departing for Peach Mountain. Nezha later reaches the temple as a remnant soul through incense karma and receives the Self-Manifestation Technique 7 13.
The Chaoge Incense Anchor
Yin Jiao and Yin Hong take refuge in the ruined temple outside Chaoge while pursued by demons and Shen Gongbao’s disciples. They offer their royal bloodline, Yin Shang’s fortune, and their lives’ karma to Gu Changqing. He accepts them and restores their fading royal fortunes through the statue 35 37.
Guangchengzi and Chijingzi arrive to reclaim the princes for the Chan Sect, but the temple’s violet radiance blocks their immortal light. The brothers’ departure from Chan Sect control makes the shrine a direct point of contention over Yin Shang’s future 38 39 40.
Tongtian subsequently visits the Chaoge temple, learns of the Interception Sect’s intended destruction, and receives a path beyond the Heavenly Dao’s fixed destinies 43 47 48 49.
The Assault on Guanjiangkou
Nezha’s victory at Three Mountains Pass spreads the temple’s reputation across the Three Realms. Wandering immortals, demon kings, and unorthodox cultivators begin searching for it, hoping incense might offer an escape from the Investiture of the Gods 70.
The Jade Emperor allies with the Western Religion to seize the temple’s disciples, legacy, and fortune. Their attack brings a Quasi-Saint Emperor Shadow, the Haotian Mirror, one hundred thousand Heavenly Punishment soldiers, and Maitreya with the Human Seed Bag 81 82.
The assault fails before reaching the threshold. The army and Emperor Shadow are destroyed, the Haotian Mirror is seized, and Maitreya is crippled and expelled to carry a warning westward. The temple becomes a taboo, prompting hostile factions to pursue indirect attacks against its allies instead 85 86 87 89 90 97.
Sanctuary for the Interception Sect
Xiaotian Dog carries the gravely wounded Zhao Gongming to Guanjiangkou, where Gu Changqing stabilizes him and offers a new cultivation path. The Three Xiao later arrive and offer incense; their treasures submit to the temple’s Dao resonance 102 109.
After the Twelve Golden Immortals’ defeat, Yuanshi Tianzun attacks the temple personally. Its defenses consume his Heavenly Dao thunder punishment, and Gu Changqing emerges from the cracking statue. Yuanshi ultimately retreats, establishing Guanjiangkou as forbidden ground where even a Sage must halt 124 125 127.
Wider Authority
Kong Xuan becomes Gu Changqing’s fourth direct disciple after completing the incense test. Later, Gu Changqing intervenes from the temple to halt Hongjun’s Heavenly Dao Wheel above Tongtian 136 159.
Humanity’s declaration of independence reserves divine reverence for the temple’s deity alongside humanity’s own parents, ancestors, and protectors. After Kong Xuan, Nezha, and Yang Jian confront the Western Sages, no force in the Three Realms dares openly challenge the temple’s authority 170 178 183.
