Background / History

Night Watcher and Teacher

Zhang Zhe served in Night Watchers Team 11 under the name “Dual Blades” before retiring and becoming a teacher at Lighthouse University. His body bore numerous scars from his past battles. He regularly donated to the school and a Lower City orphanage, leaving him with comparatively modest savings 24 27 40.

Defense of Classroom A7

During the approaching Red Moon Calamity, Zhang Zhe was the only teacher defending Classroom A7. He admitted Wang Man but kept the wounded Xu Le outside because his strong Guyinduo aura presented a mutation risk. Nevertheless, he promised to protect Xu Le alongside the students inside 24 26.

After Xu Le reported seeing White Cicada carrying half a teacher’s corpse, Zhang Zhe sent a blood-activated message and explained the danger posed by the twin Witch Cicadas. He organized students to build wooden fences and ground spikes and scatter Oddity ashes around the defensive area 24 25.

When students began mutating inside the classroom, Zhang Zhe killed the first two Oddities. Many frightened students ignored his warning and fled outside, where they were attacked. Xu Le urged him to stop the returning students because some had become polluted, but Zhang Zhe hesitated and suggested isolating them in a corner instead 26 27.

Zhang Zhe eventually beheaded a student attempting to enter. Moments later, Five Heads killed another student at his feet. Enraged, he announced his former unit and fighting name, split his greatsword into two sabers, and charged into the Oddities with flaming blades. His departure from the entrance allowed polluted students to rejoin the classroom crowd 27.

As further mutations broke out behind him, Zhang Zhe became distracted and suffered wounds from Living Corpses. He asked Xu Le to handle the classroom so that he could concentrate on holding the outside line 28.

Death and Last Wish

By nearly four o’clock, Zhang Zhe’s movements had slowed and his blade flames had gone out. Gu Beichen and Wang Shu arrived before his defense collapsed. While treating him, Wang Shu learned that he had taken roughly five or six doses of Stimulant in rapid succession; prolonged fighting had also left him afflicted with Guyinduo pollution 30.

Knowing he could not be saved, Zhang Zhe acknowledged his mistaken decisions and praised Xu Le’s actions. With no family and all his friends already dead, he entrusted Xu Le with his bank savings: Xu Le could keep a small portion as thanks and donate the remainder to the school. After Zhang Zhe died, Wang Shu and Gu Beichen saluted him, and Gu Beichen cremated his body 30.

Legacy

Wang Shu later gave Xu Le Zhang Zhe’s sword, which had become a sealed Gundo Relic tied to his final wish. Xu Le withdrew the 1,150 yuan in Zhang Zhe’s account, kept 50, and set aside 1,100 for the donation. His sincere intention to fulfill the wish unsealed the sword before he delivered the estate and documents to the school welfare office 34 40 41.

Appearance

  • Extensive battle scars: His torso was covered in centipede-like scars, revealed when his shirt burst apart during his dual-blade assault 27.

Personality

Zhang Zhe placed his students’ safety above his own. His initial refusal to admit Xu Le was a precaution against pollution, not personal hostility; he softened when Xu Le understood his reasoning. He also recognized and openly praised Xu Le’s composure after learning that the student had killed an Oddity 24 25.

His compassion sometimes conflicted with his Night Watcher training. Although he understood the danger of admitting potentially polluted students, his years as a teacher made him reluctant to kill them. Witnessing their deaths drove him into a furious attack, but he remained capable of admitting his failures afterward. In his final moments, he described himself as a relic of an older era and placed his hopes in the younger generation 27 30.

Abilities & Skills

Advanced Swordsmanship

  • Level 2 strength and speed: Under normal conditions, he could dispatch the two level 1 Oddities inside A7 before they caused widespread casualties 26.
  • Thrown greatsword: He hurled his spinning weapon into a mutating student, pinning them to a wall and shattering half their body 26.
  • Dual-saber combat: During his counterattack, level 1 Five Heads fell in approximately two or three strikes each 27.
  • Power limit: Despite his strength, he could not fight the level 3 Black Cicada as Gu Beichen could 24 32.

Flaming Blades

  • Before his assault, he drank from a bottle, spat liquid onto his sword, and separated it into two sabers. Flames then clung to the blades, reducing Five Heads to ash 27.
  • The nature of these flames was not explained to Xu Le, and they extinguished as Zhang Zhe weakened 27 30.

Defensive Experience and Oddity Knowledge

  • Recognized combat injuries and Guyinduo pollution risks when screening arrivals at A7 24.
  • Explained the Witch Cicadas’ abilities, the full moon’s connection to the Black Tide, and the use of refined Oddity ashes to reveal ghost-type Oddities 24 25 26.
  • Organized barricades and correctly warned that the defended classroom remained safer than the outside, even with mutations occurring inside 25 26.
  • Used a paper message activated by his blood; it ignited and vanished after activation 24.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Tianrui Lifeng Twin-Bladed Sword — A heavy, nonstandard war sword with a hilt mechanism that separates it into two sabers. After Zhang Zhe’s death, it became a TU-Class Gundo Relic whose “Cursed blade” property absorbs supernatural energy to increase its power. Its seal was linked to fulfilling his last wish 27 34 41.
  • Stimulant — Took approximately five or six doses during the battle, placing extreme strain on his body 30.
  • Refined Oddity ashes — Used around the defenses to expose ghost-type Oddities; Warlock refinement had removed their Guyinduo pollution 25 26.

Relationships

  • Xu Le — Student and battlefield ally. Zhang Zhe initially excluded him from A7 for safety, later relied on him to contain the classroom crisis, and entrusted him with his estate and final wish 24 28 30 41.
  • Wang Man — Student under his protection; admitted her after finding no obvious injuries or Guyinduo pollutants 24.
  • Wang Shu — Arriving Night Watcher who treated him, recognized his fatal condition, and later passed his sword to Xu Le 30 34.
  • Gu Beichen — Helped relieve the defense of A7, saluted Zhang Zhe after his death, and cremated his remains 30.
