| Slower growth, lasting improvements | 30 | The rate of spiritual-energy increase slows, but resources remain plentiful, newborn children have markedly better aptitude, and realm breakthroughs remain easier than before the upheaval. |
Geography
| Location | Description and Significance |
|---|---|
| Heavenly Origin Continent | The continent on which the nine-realm cultivation hierarchy is described; later targeted by the Heaven-Severing Church’s expansion from the eastern seas 2 32. |
| Righteous Qi Sect | An ancient sect repeatedly defended by Li Dalong. Its rising reputation attracts recruits, marriage alliances, and requests for protection 11 22 29 33. |
| Forbidden Grounds of the Rear Mountain | Formerly a blessed cultivation ground. Ancient warfare destroyed its spiritual vein and cave dwellings; Li Dalong uses an abandoned cave abode there as his secluded cultivation base 1 2 4. |
| Ancestral Grounds | The sealed central battlefield within the rear mountain, containing ruined palaces, the remains of sect predecessors, and imprisoned Devil Race enemies 11 12. |
| Kunlun Mountain | A towering, snow-capped mountain range more than twenty thousand li west of the Righteous Qi Sect. The True Martial Sect and Dao Alliance headquarters are located there 28 29. |
| Abyssal Devil Lands | The territory to which the Devil Race retreats after Li Dalong’s destruction of Blood Demon and the Rising Sun Sect’s assembled senior members 11. |
| Demon Beast Forest | The Demon Race’s longstanding refuge and a destination for human disciples gaining combat experience. Its depths contain the Crimson Flame Tiger Tribe’s territory 18 38 44. |
| Misty Canyon | A mist-filled canyon that weakens Li Dalong’s divine sense. A spatial rift there has allowed otherworldly demons to enter for decades 46 50. |
| Eastern seas and islands | Resource-rich waters containing numerous sea beasts and islands, some composed entirely of spirit-stone deposits. The Heaven-Severing Church develops there before expanding onto the continent 32. |
| Southern Sea | Contains the secluded island, more than twenty thousand li from the Righteous Qi Sect, where Li Dalong undertakes his Tribulation Transcendence breakthrough 37 38. |
Cultivation System
Realms
The Heavenly Origin Continent recognizes nine major realms, each divided into early, middle, and late stages 2.
| Realm | Documented Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Qi Refinement | The starting point of cultivation: practitioners draw spiritual qi into the body, improve it, and establish their foundation 2 4. |
| Foundation Establishment | Marks a decisive separation from mortal life and grants a lifespan of 180 years 4. |
| Golden Core | A golden core forms within the dantian, and lifespan increases to 500 years. The Foundation Establishment–Golden Core threshold bars more than ninety percent of cultivators 4 5. |
| Nascent Soul | The golden core transforms into a Nascent Soul. Body control, divine sense, and mental clarity improve; the Righteous Qi Sect initially has only twenty or thirty Nascent Soul disciples and elders among more than ten thousand disciples 8. |
| Out-of-Body | Divine sense can travel far beyond the body to observe and manipulate objects. It can also influence weaker cultivators’ minds and actions 9. |
| Spirit Transformation | During the revival, figures at this realm emerge as major faction leaders. Late Spirit Transformation is the highest realm identified in publicly available information when Li Dalong stabilizes at Mahayana 27 34. |
| Mahayana | Li Dalong surpasses the publicly known cultivation ceiling upon reaching this realm. An ancient inter-racial agreement restricts human cultivators at Mahayana or above from entering the Demon Beast Forest’s depths without good cause 34 43. |
| Tribulation Transcendence | Advancement requires heavenly tribulation. Survival transforms the body and divine sense, grants a trace of immortal grace, and helps shed mortal nature 37. |
| Earth Immortal | The ninth major realm in the continent’s stated hierarchy 2. |
Cultivation Foundations
- Spiritual energy — Heaven and Earth Spiritual Energy is absorbed through the body, circulated through the meridians, and refined into spiritual power stored in the dantian 2.
- Dantian — Greater size increases spiritual-power capacity; greater resilience permits purer compression and higher cultivation potential 2.
- Meridians — Wider, tougher meridians improve energy absorption and circulation while allowing greater power output 2.
- Talent and resources — Both determine cultivation speed. Higher realms require sharply increasing amounts of spiritual power, time, and effort 4 9.
- Long cultivation periods — A single secluded cultivation session can last years or decades. Ordinary cultivators may spend an entire lifetime crossing one realm or minor stage 4 9.
Arts and Resources
- Combat arts — Common disciplines include saber, spear, sword, fist, palm, and finger techniques, alongside spells, sword control, and divine-sense attacks 2.
- Auxiliary arts — Formations, talisman crafting, alchemy, and artifact forging require specialized knowledge and substantial resources. Alchemy and forging require fire-control and object-control techniques; formations and talismans require strong divine sense 2.
- Formations — Draw on spiritual power, materials, terrain, and other natural forces. Their functions include attack, defense, illusion, spiritual-energy concentration, and, in some cases, manipulation of time or life and death 5 8.
- Spirit-Gathering Array — An ancient formation lost to the Cultivation World until obtained by Li Dalong’s system. It gathers surrounding qi or draws energy from spirit stones to accelerate cultivation 12.
- Pills and spirit stones — Valuable cultivation resources. A single Marrow-Washing Pill can sell for over a thousand mid-grade spirit stones and remains difficult to purchase 3.
- Restricted teachings — Sects closely guard advanced cultivation methods. Unauthorized possession of the Righteous Qi Formula can lead to pursuit, execution, or the destruction of the offender’s cultivation 2.
Factions and Political Order
| Faction | Position and Influence |
|---|---|
| Righteous Qi Sect | Declines severely after an ancient war, but regains prestige through Li Dalong’s interventions and Zhou Yong’s leadership 12 20. |
| Blood Devil Race | Ravages the world in ancient times and later renews attacks against the Righteous Qi Sect. Its defeat forces the Devil Race back into the Abyssal Devil Lands 10 11. |
| Demon Race | Possesses formidable spiritual power and powerful bodies. It emerges from the Demon Beast Forest to challenge human factions 18 19. |
| Cloudmist Palace | A predominantly female, third-rate sect whose marriages into major powers give it influence beyond its formal rank. It forms a marriage alliance with the Righteous Qi Sect through Yun Yao and Zhou Yong 21 22. |
| Dao Alliance | Also called the Cultivators’ Alliance. Founded by Feng Jinglei during the revival, it draws more than half the small and medium-sized forces under its banner and attempts to absorb the Righteous Qi Sect 27 28. |
| Heaven-Severing Church | Grows from an obscure island faction into an expansionist power under Zhan Tian, absorbing continental sects through submission or destruction 32 33. |
- Strength governs survival — Cultivation determines personal security and political authority; even righteous sects face internal power struggles and opportunistic rivals 1 15 26.
- Vassal obligations — Subordinate sects pay annual tribute. Corruption, oppression, withheld tribute, and ambitions for independence contribute to the Five-Sect Alliance’s rebellion against the Righteous Qi Sect 15.
- Ancient inter-racial agreement — Demon and Devil Race Demon Sages may not enter the human heartlands from the Demon Beast Forest without good cause. Human cultivators at Mahayana or above face the corresponding restriction on entering the forest’s depths; violators are subject to attack from all sides 43.
History
Ancient Blood Devil War
Tens of thousands of years earlier, the Blood Devil Race devastated the Cultivation World. Ouyang Zhenhua, the Righteous Qi Sect’s first sect master, destroyed much of its elite strength and imprisoned the Blood Slaughter Ancestor 11.
During the ensuing assault, Ouyang Zhenhua drew the strongest enemies into the sect’s rear mountain and sacrificed himself to seal them. Peace returned, but nearly ninety percent of the sect’s elders and elite disciples died, leaving the once-powerful sect below third-rate standards 12.
Renewed Invasions
Li Dalong’s killing of Blood Demon and the Rising Sun Sect’s assembled senior members shook the Cultivation World. The Devil Race withdrew, and factions that had dismissed the Righteous Qi Sect as a declining third-rate power began fearing its hidden protector 11.
The resulting peace ended when the Demon Race emerged from the Demon Beast Forest. Its assault on the Righteous Qi Sect failed after Li Dalong killed the Spirit Monkey Demon Sage and the leading invaders; the surviving demons retreated, with their losses expected to require several thousand years to recover 18 19 20.
Rival Alliances and Expansionist Powers
The spiritual-energy revival encouraged both rapid advancement and competition for resources. Feng Jinglei established the Dao Alliance amid this turmoil, but its attempt to force the Righteous Qi Sect into membership ended with Li Dalong killing him at the True Martial Sect 27 28 29.
The Heaven-Severing Church subsequently expanded from the eastern seas onto the continent. After destroying its forces attacking the Righteous Qi Sect, Li Dalong compelled Zhan Tian to submit and spared him as a deterrent against other ambitious powers. Human, Devil, and Demon factions then warned their members against provoking the Righteous Qi Sect 32 36 37.
Otherworldly Invasion
While searching Misty Canyon with Zhou Xue, Li Dalong discovered that Soul-Devouring Demons had crossed through a spatial rift for decades. He judged their emergence beyond the canyon a potential catastrophe for the wider Cultivation World and began investigating their numbers, strength, and entry point 50.
Connections to Other Realms
- Immortal Realm — A source of abilities and treasures beyond ordinary local cultivation, including the Law of Heaven and Manifestation of Earth and the Fire Essence Jujube 21 25.
- Kunlun Mountain rumors — Cultivators claim the mountain may connect to the Immortal Realm, but no person or faction has obtained definite confirmation 28.
- Mysterious greater realm — The Vast Righteous Qi Formula originates outside the Cultivation World and develops primordial spirit power, a level above divine sense 30.
- World rejection — After surviving heavenly tribulation, Li Dalong faintly senses the Cultivation World rejecting him 38.
- Spatial rifts — Misty Canyon’s rift establishes a physical route for beings from another world to invade 50.
