He was the Earth God of Golden Rhinoceros Mountain. Three years ago, Wukong had entrusted him with the food he had begged for. Now, after three years, he returned it.
Wukong asked, "After all this time, hasn't the food spoiled?"
The Earth God replied, "Great Sage, though the food has deteriorated somewhat, it has not spoiled. This humble god preserved it with divine power every day."
Wukong took it and examined it. It had indeed not spoiled, but the grains of rice had all stuck together and grown hard.
Wukong said, "Master, this food is old. Let's throw it away."
Tang Sanzang said, "We monks must cherish our blessings and our possessions. This food was obtained through alms. Since it has not spoiled, we must not discard it lightly. I have just eaten and am not hungry yet. Put it in the luggage for now, and I shall eat it when I am hungry."
Wukong agreed.
The four bid farewell to the Earth God and left Golden Rhinoceros Mountain.
