Praying for rain in Fengxian County (14)

After hearing the Tathagata Buddha's words, Wukong did not rush to heaven. Instead, he returned to Fengxian County and told Tang Sanzang the whole story to save Tang Sanzang from worrying.

Upon learning this, the old County Governor burst into tears, saying, "What should we do?"

Wukong said, "Don't worry, let Old Sun summon the Water Virtue Star Lord and have him send down a Sweet Rain first, then I'll go to the Heavenly Realm to avert the disaster for you!"

Upon hearing this, the old County Governor repeatedly bowed in gratitude.

Wukong then captured the Water Virtue Star Lord and taught him how to bring rain.

The Water Virtue Star Lord guarded the Water Seal and refused to send rain, saying:

"Great Sage, your heart is dedicated to saving the Common People, which I admire greatly. But you cannot sacrifice me for the sake of saving the Common People! This rain must not fall. Either Great Sage, go to Heaven and ask for a decree to send rain, and I will send rain naturally; or you can take away my Water Seal and send rain yourself, Great Sage violate the Heavenly Laws."

Upon hearing this, Wukong was in a dilemma. He wasn't afraid of breaking the Heavenly Laws, but he was afraid of implicating Tang Sanzang. He was also afraid that Rainmaking rain would take too long and the people would suffer from drought.

Seeing this, Tang Sanzang said, "Wukong, go to Heaven Rainmaking for rain. I will stay here."

Wukong said, "Master, I'm afraid the Rain Water won't be able to fall for a while."

Tang Sanzang said, "If it cannot rain, I will replace Master Alu and carry out the rescue."

Wukong thought for a moment and said, "Master, you are the elder, there's no need for that. Your disciple can help with everything! If it really can't bring rain, let that fool go and steal the Water Seal, break the Heavenly Laws. Anyway, he's already been reincarnated as a pig, so there's not much he can be punished for!"

Bajie retorted angrily, "You Bimawen, do you even have any good wishes for me?"

Wukong laughed and Somersault Cloud into the sky.

Knowing that Wukong had gone to heaven and wouldn't be back for a while, and that the people of Fengxian County were without drinking water, Tang Sanzang couldn't stand idly by. So he looked to the Water Virtue Star Lord and asked:

"The Supreme Deity is Water Virtue Star Lord descended from the Heavenly Realm; is he capable of managing Water Conservancy?"

Upon hearing this, the Water Virtue Star Lord said, "If you speak of water Supernatural Ability, Holy Monk, this humble deity is truly not proficient; but if you speak of Water Conservancy projects, such as digging wells and canals, I do know a little."

Upon hearing this, Tang Sanzang asked the Water Virtue Star Lord for help and searched the entire city for a suitable place to dig a well.

The Water Virtue Star Lord is the local Water Lords, possessing knowledge of certain Laws and Water Conservancy. Therefore, he can immediately discern where there is water and where there is no water.

Although Fengxian County has suffered from drought for years, it is not without rain. Every year, Alu casts a spell to bring down heavy rain for seven or eight days, and the soil is full of moisture. However, the wells of ordinary people are only five or six zhang deep, and the deep wells of wealthy families are only ten or so zhang deep, so they cannot draw water.

Now, with the guidance of the Water Virtue Star Lord, everyone knows where it is convenient to fetch water and where it is convenient to dig a well.

Tang Sanzang then called on Bajie Sha Wujing for help. Bajie transformed his Rake into a length of forty or fifty feet, Sha Wujing unfurled his Precious Staff, which also became forty or fifty feet long. The County Governor then led Artisans to reinforce the structure.

Within a day or two, hundreds of wells were dug in the city, ensuring that the people had no shortage of drinking water. After that, wells were dug in various villages and towns outside the city.

The people's gratitude is boundless.

Tang Sanzang then asked the Water Virtue Star Lord to build a water channel.

The Water Virtue Star Lord asked in bewilderment, "Digging a well is one thing, but why build an irrigation canal?"

Tang Sanzang said, "If we build an irrigation canal, even if there are natural disasters in the future, we can still guarantee a harvest for Season or two seasons."

The Water Virtue Star Lord asked, "What matters now is not what's to come?"

Tang Sanzang said, "Since we have nothing else to do, Your Majesty, why don't you make a diagram first, so they can dig it up themselves later?"

Upon hearing this, the Water Virtue Star Lord agreed and casually sketched a diagram of the county's irrigation canals.

Tang Sanzang handed the drawing to the old County Governor.

The old County Governor was overjoyed and completed the canal a few years later.

Wukong arrived in the Heavenly Realm, and outside Lingxiao Hall, the Four Great Celestial Masters came out and asked, "Great Sage, where have you come from?"

Celestial Master Xu then went to the Lingxiao Hall and began to speak:

"Your Majesty, Sun Wukong has arrived in Fengxian County of Tianzhu Kingdom and wishes to pray for rain. He is currently waiting outside the palace."

Upon hearing this, the Celestial Worthy Jade Emperor summoned Wukong inside and addressed the assembled immortals:

"On the 25th day of the 12th month of the Gengzi year, I, the Emperor, went out to inspect the myriad heavens and traveled through the Three Realms. When I arrived at another place, I saw that the Shangguan Zheng unrighteous, pushing over the vegetarian offerings for the Heavenly Offering to feed the dogs, uttering foul language, and committing an offense. I immediately set three conditions in the Pixiang Hall. Celestial Master Zhang, you all take Wukong to see. If the three conditions are met, then issue an imperial decree to him; if they are not met, then leave this matter alone."

Upon hearing this, the Four Great Celestial Masters immediately Wukong to the Pixiang Hall.

Inside the hall, there was a mountain of rice, more than ten feet high; a mountain of face, more than twenty feet high; and a large golden lock, more than a foot long. A chicken was pecking at the rice mountain, a dog was licking the face mountain, and a lamp was warming itself under the golden lock.

Celestial Master Zhang said, "This was established by the Jade Emperor. It will only rain when the chickens have finished eating the rice, the dogs have finished licking the noodles, and the fire has burned through the lock."

Upon hearing this, Wukong was greatly alarmed, thinking to himself, "No wonder Buddha doesn't care about this matter."

If it were Buddha himself to intervene, Maitreya Buddha would first eat all his rice, Tathagata Buddha would eat all his noodles, and Buddha Randeng would burn through the chains before rain would finally fall.

Wukong dared not speak again, and walked out of the hall, his face full of shame.

Celestial Master Zhang said, "Great Sage, there is no need to worry. Just persuade that County Marquis to turn over a new leaf. A single thought of compassion will move Heaven, and blessings will come naturally."

After hearing this, Wukong bowed in gratitude and left. Returning to Fengxian County, he met the old County Marquis and demanded:

"Because you offended Heaven and Earth on the 25th day of the 12th month of the Gengzi year, Heaven has punished you and refused to send rain! Tell me the truth about how you threw away the vegetarian offerings for Heaven and fed them to the dogs!"

Upon hearing this, the old County Marquis knelt down and, daring not to conceal the truth, replied as such:

"That day, I made a vegetarian Vegetarian Offering to Heaven within my office. My wife was unkind, and we argued fiercely. In a fit of anger and ignorance, I overturned the offering table and spilled the vegetarian food, which the dogs ate. I have been remembering this for years, and it has left me in a daze, with no way to explain it. I do not know if Heaven has punished me and caused harm to the Common People. I earnestly hope for your guidance so that I may sincerely turn to good."

Upon hearing this, Wukong immediately instructed the old County Marquis to set up Taoist temple and plead guilty before Heaven.

Upon hearing this, the old County Marquis invited local monks and Daoists to set up Taoist temple, wrote a document, petitioned Heaven, led the crowd in offering incense and worshipping, thanking Heaven and Earth, and admitting his sins.

Because the people knew that worshipping Buddha was useless, every household in the city, young and old, men and women, did not worship Tathagata Buddha Maitreya Buddha, Tathagata Buddha, or Buddha Randeng. Instead, they all recited the True Scriptures Taoist Technique of Daoism or the new scriptures brought from the Dharma-Extinguishing Kingdom in the east, with a respectful and benevolent heart, Paying Homage to Heaven and Earth.

Wukong ascended to the Lingxiao again to report to the Jade Emperor.

The Celestial Worthy Jade Emperor instructed the Four Great Celestial Masters to inspect the Pixiang Hall, and they found that the mountain of rice and flour were gone, and the chains were broken.

The Celestial Worthy Jade Emperor was overjoyed and immediately issued an edict to the Nine Heavens Responding Palace Responding to the Origin, ordering the Four Wind, Rain, Thunder, and Lightning Deities to the Lower Realm and bring down three feet and forty-two drops of rain.

The gods descended to the mortal Lower Realm with Wukong, displaying their divine power even more; auspicious winds and clouds gathered, and Sweet Rain poured down.
