Dinner at the castle was drawing to a close that evening.
The first wife and Lin Ke's mother had learned that he intended to spend a thousand gold coins to help Nix undergo Enlightenment.
To them, however, that was a trivial matter. It was only a thousand gold coins.
A thousand gold coins? Insignificant.
Helping a follower awaken his bloodline was necessary, so neither of them objected.
The real issue was that Lin Ke intended to awaken his bloodline before his father, the true King of Azan, returned.
Now that was a matter of real importance!
"Little Lin Ke, why are you in such a hurry?"
Lin Ke's mother was a little worried. There were only a dozen or so days left, after all, and she wanted to wait for his father to return so they could witness their son's bloodline awakening together.
I can't exactly tell you it's because I have a phobia of insufficient firepower... Lin Ke smiled.
"Mother, lately I've felt that my time has come, that I should undergo Enlightenment. It's like... well, like my bloodline is telling me."
In this world, anything mystical had a basis in fact, especially such elusive intuitions. Sometimes, to other people, they carried more weight than experience.
"Lin Ke, have you... have you thought this through? That's your father, the true King of Azan. Are you sure you don't want him to witness your bloodline awakening?" The first wife frowned slightly, emphasizing the word "true."
Lin Ke had no desire to trade barbs with her just then. After all, she controlled half of the authority over the family's assets.
The other half rested with Steward Billy. His own mother understood none of it and spent her days being rather clueless.
"Yes, my dear aunt. This is my decision as the heir to Viscount Azan," Lin Ke replied evenly.
Seeing that, the first wife said no more. She finished her juice, rose, and left.
"Little Lin Ke, if you've made up your mind, then go ahead." Lin Ke's mother had always respected his wishes.
Or rather, she had few opinions of her own and was even less inclined to interfere with his decisions.
"Mm." Lin Ke nodded, warmth stirring in his heart.
Beside them, Nix, who had been listening to their conversation with wide eyes, couldn't help letting out a small cheer.
Nix was the fourth person in the castle permitted to eat at the table, because he was a follower.
Viscount Azan had established that rule: followers were family as well as comrades in arms, and should not be treated like servants.
It was also one of the few rules Lin Ke approved of.
"Nix, can you undergo Enlightenment too? Aren't you only three months old?" Lin Ke couldn't resist teasing him.
"Four months..."
Nix twitched his little nose rapidly. "Where I come from, we can undergo Enlightenment at two months. It's just that our tribe has no money. Boo-hoo."
As he spoke, two clear streams of tears ran down his cheeks, as though he had remembered something painful again.
Lin Ke was already immune.
Nix could shed two streams of tears at the drop of a hat. At first, Lin Ke had comforted him every time, but later he realized it was a trap.
He had no idea why a rabbit like Nix had such overactive tear glands.
"Well, isn't that wonderful? You'll get to undergo Enlightenment without a hitch," John said sourly beside them.
He had originally been the special one. Apart from the young master, he alone would get to undergo Enlightenment.
Now there was Nix too. Although Nix wasn't as close to the young master as he was, in a sense, Nix held a higher position: he was a follower.
Besides, John had been busy studying with Billy these past two days, so Nix had become the one accompanying the young master.
That left John constantly acting like a neglected wife, taking digs at Nix.
"Yeah... I hope I awaken a good bloodline, so I can be of more help to Mr. Lin Ke." Nix wholeheartedly agreed with John, completely oblivious to his jealousy.
Lin Ke watched them and smiled without saying a word.
One day passed, then a second.
The [Enlightenment Teacher] still hadn't arrived, leaving Lin Ke rather weary.
There were actually other [Enlightenment Teachers] in the nearby town, but their levels were too low.
According to Billy and the others, besides awakening his bloodline, the teacher would also need to teach him a great deal. Those country teachers simply weren't qualified to teach that knowledge properly.
That was why they had to invite the [Enlightenment Teacher] who was on good terms with Viscount Azan.
Apparently, he was only a part-time [Enlightenment Teacher]. His main class was something else.
Having just woken up, Lin Ke washed and dressed with the servants' assistance, then gulped down a steaming cup of Gula Cattle milk and ate two slices of white bread, finishing his breakfast.
He stepped onto the balcony and took a deep breath of fresh air. "Ah... that feels good!" He stretched.
But as he admired the unspoiled scenery in the distance, he suddenly spotted a figure flying through the air, rapidly approaching the castle.
"Holy shit! He's flying!"
He figured anyone who could fly through the air had to be someone important!
"On guard! On guard! Look up! Someone's coming!"
Lin Ke hurriedly shouted down to the people below.
He didn't know whether the newcomer was friend or foe, but it was better to be on guard.
If he was a friend, they wouldn't attack. If he was an enemy, they would unleash a hail of arrows. The arrow towers were equipped with large crossbows.
The people below heard Lin Ke's shouts, and several guards immediately sprang into action.
But the dedicated tower guards needed no warning. They were far more alert than those farmhand guards.
Clack, clack, clack...
Within just a few minutes, every crossbow around the castle was ready.
The figure, however, didn't charge straight toward them. Instead, he stopped several hundred meters away and descended to the ground.
Then he began walking slowly toward the castle, as though out for a stroll.
He's not hostile!
Lin Ke froze for a moment, then hurried downstairs on his short little legs. Passing the doorway, he saw that neither Billy nor John was there, so he quickly instructed the other servants to find them.
The visitor was very likely Viscount Azan's friend, the [Enlightenment Teacher]!
Lin Ke had been waiting for him for far too long!
For the first time across his two lives, mysterious supernatural powers were within reach. His anticipation had long since become unbearable.
Please don't let it be gunpowder... it has to be a fireball spell... With that thought, he raced downstairs.
In truth, he already had a fair idea. First there had been the King of the Gods, and now this man had flown through the air without the aid of anything at all.
This really was a world of magic!
And he could learn magic and become one of those Professionals!
The servants who saw him along the way were all puzzled. Why was their young master so excited?
It was the first time they had ever seen excitement on his face. Before, he had always worn a friendly, kindly smile.
Reaching the ground floor, Lin Ke smoothed his brown hair, which had become a little tousled from running so fast. He cleared his throat twice, testing whether his pitch and tone sounded appropriate.
This was a Professional!
And supposedly quite a powerful one, above level ten.
In his imagination, someone above level ten, someone who had reached level eleven, was practically one of the continent's great powers!
Of course, that was assuming the level cap was ten rather than a hundred.
"Wow! Young master!"
Up ahead, John came rushing over and looked pleasantly surprised to see him. "Young master, you're already up? Steward Billy sent me to find you. He said the teacher has arrived!"
John looked delighted. After all, he could awaken his bloodline too.
"I know. Where's Nix? Go get him. We'll welcome the teacher together." Lin Ke was patting his cheeks to make himself look a little more alert.
This was another world, after all. What if the teacher thought his clothes and hair were disheveled and refused to help him undergo Enlightenment?
"Oh... then I'll go find him." John was reluctant, like a wife whose beloved had been stolen away.
Rabbitfolk were the absolute worst!
