Background / History
Gion was a Marine officer and the foster sister of Vice Admiral Tsuru. She disliked Holy Land Mary Geoise and the Celestial Dragons, whom she regarded as parasites, but was forcibly transferred there after the Five Elders complied with Liu Feng’s demand for a guard. She concealed her resentment because defying the order could endanger both herself and Tsuru. 351 352 353
Liu Feng assigned her the codename Momousagi and clarified that her role was to eliminate opponents and handle matters too minor for him to address personally. Hancock immediately challenged her suitability; Momousagi defeated Hancock and held her sword at Hancock’s throat, earning conditional acceptance as Liu Feng’s guard. 353
After Saint Kamar was revealed as the source of an assassination attempt against Liu Feng, Momousagi was ordered to kill him. She accepted despite fearing exposure and retaliation against Tsuru. Liu Feng covertly supported the mission, then protected Momousagi when the Five Elders confronted them over Kamar’s death. Realizing she could no longer return to the Marines, she accepted Liu Feng’s protection in exchange for loyalty. 366 367 369
Personality
Momousagi is practical, composed, and highly conscious of political consequences. She initially resents Liu Feng’s coercive authority and repeatedly weighs the danger his orders pose to Tsuru, yet she follows through when refusal is not a viable option. 353 366
She values self-reliance and originally intended to become strong without a Devil Fruit. The Rumble-Rumble Fruit’s exceptional power eventually convinces her to abandon that conviction. 380
Her relationship with Hancock is marked by rivalry and irritation. Momousagi works effectively alongside Hancock in battle, but she dislikes being overlooked when Hancock receives praise and often trades barbs with her. 365 366 416
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Momousagi is a skilled swordswoman who fights with Kompira, one of the Great Grade Twenty-One Blades.
- Her blade could cut through Blood Wolf’s defenses even before she had Armament Haki. 365
- She defeated Hancock in a direct duel and judged Hancock as a genius who could eventually surpass her. 353
- She pressured Golden Lion Shiki with lightning-enhanced sword strikes and nearly knocked him into the sea. 426
- She declined Black Blade Shusui, considering Kompira sufficient for her needs. 443
Haki
Momousagi possesses both Armament Haki and Conqueror’s Haki.
- Armament Haki — Granted through an Ability Acquisition Card; initially acquired to strengthen her combat potential after the Saint Kamar incident. 369
- Conqueror’s Haki — Granted by Liu Feng. Its first uncontrolled release caused nearby Marines to faint and drew the attention of Marine leadership. 452
- She conceals Liu Feng’s role in granting her Conqueror’s Haki, allowing Tsuru and the Marines to believe she awakened it naturally. 452
Rumble-Rumble Fruit
After eating the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, Momousagi gained the ability to transform into and control lightning.
- Her lightning form grants high-speed movement described as comparable to the Glint-Glint Fruit’s light-speed movement. 380
- She immediately judged that her new power would allow her to defeat her former self with ease. 380
- She combines lightning mobility with swordsmanship, including against Shiki. 426
- She later no longer suffers from the usual Devil Fruit weaknesses to seawater and Seastone. 417 426
Six Powers and Infiltration
- Uses Soru for rapid movement, including when she swiftly captured Arlong. 410
- Infiltrated Saint Kamar’s palace, though Liu Feng judged her infiltration ability only average because she lacked formal assassin training. 367
- Successfully obtained the Pluton blueprints by threatening people close to Tom and captured shipwrights capable of beginning construction. 383
Navigation and Training
Momousagi serves as a navigator aboard the Pluton and trains Nami in navigation. Though she considers herself only a temporary or incomplete navigator, she is experienced enough to teach the fundamentals. 399 408 411
- Nami rapidly surpasses Momousagi in navigation-related subjects, including meteorology, oceanography, mathematics, cartography, and chart-making. 411
- She also supervises Yamato’s training and uses lightning as punishment when Yamato attempts to avoid it. 408
Equipment
- Kompira — Momousagi’s personal sword and one of the Great Grade Twenty-One Blades. 362 365
- Pluton blueprints — Acquired under Liu Feng’s orders; Momousagi later supervises the warship’s construction in Wano. 383 390
Relationships
- Liu Feng — Initially her coercive superior; after he saves her from the Five Elders and grants her Armament Haki, she accepts loyalty to him in exchange for his protection. 353 369
- Tsuru — Her foster sister. Momousagi’s fear of implicating Tsuru is a major reason she initially suppresses resistance to Liu Feng and hesitates before killing Saint Kamar. 353 366
- Hancock — Rival and fellow subordinate. Hancock challenged her upon arrival and lost; they later cooperate against Blood Wolf but remain openly competitive. 353 365 366
- Yamato — Trains and disciplines Yamato, while also worrying about the conflict between Yamato and Hancock. 379 408
- Nami — Navigation instructor and protector during the Pluton’s voyages. 411 432
Story Role / Major Arcs
Forced Transfer to Liu Feng
The Five Elders order Gion to serve Liu Feng under threat of severe punishment. At Liu Feng’s estate, she receives the Momousagi codename, defeats Hancock, and becomes his guard despite being warned that she will be replaced if she proves weak. 352 353
Blood Wolf and Saint Kamar Incident
Momousagi and Hancock jointly defeat Blood Wolf, with Momousagi’s swordsmanship creating the opening for Hancock’s petrification techniques. Liu Feng then orders Momousagi to assassinate Saint Kamar; she accepts the mission despite expecting exposure and possible death. 365 366
After Liu Feng intervenes to secure the assassination, he forces the Five Elders to retreat. Momousagi formally accepts that she cannot return to the Marines and chooses to remain under Liu Feng’s protection. 369
Pluton Project
Liu Feng gives Momousagi the Rumble-Rumble Fruit and orders her to obtain the Pluton blueprints. She secures the plans through threats, captures shipwrights, and later oversees construction of the completed Pluton in Wano Country. 380 383 390
Pluton Crew
Momousagi becomes responsible for navigation and shipboard discipline. She helps recruit Nami, teaches her navigation, protects her during voyages, and assumes a practical leadership role among Liu Feng’s companions. 408 411 432
Golden Lion Shiki Conflict
When Shiki attempts to abduct Nami and recruit Momousagi, she rejects him and confronts him alone. Her lightning-enhanced swordsmanship forces Shiki to narrowly avoid falling into the sea before Liu Feng arrives. 426
Fish-Man Island
At Fish-Man Island, Momousagi warns Nami about hostility toward humans and accepts Liu Feng’s order to capture Vander Decken IX alone, confident she can complete the task faster without Yamato’s assistance. 432
