Personality
Jiang Huaijin initially treats Jiang Xun with coldness, impatience, and open prejudice. Convinced that his newly returned brother is malicious and troublesome, he interprets even dangerous situations as consequences of Jiang Xun’s own misconduct. His affection instead belongs to Jiang Zixing, whom he has helped raise and regarded as his closest younger brother for eighteen years 2 9 10 32.
His concern for family reputation also shapes his early behavior. When Jiang Xun takes a café job, Huaijin offers him money but frames the work as an embarrassment to the family. Even while outwardly rejecting closeness, however, he feels slighted when Jiang Xun buys gifts for everyone except him 12 24.
As their relationship improves, his sternness gives way to dry humor and reluctant indulgence. He trades insults with Jiang Xun, carries him when he is ill, buys the street food he demands, and eventually addresses him as “princess” while trying to discover why he is upset 51 97 105.
Huaijin is capable of recognizing his failures rather than merely defending his intentions. Reading Jiang Xun’s diary forces him to confront both the abuse his brother endured and his own unfair treatment. His later protectiveness is accompanied by persistent guilt, which resurfaces devastatingly when Jiang Xun dies 53 54 58 172.
Background / History
Jiang Xun’s return
Jiang Huaijin grew up with Jiang Zixing as his younger brother. When the family discovered that Zixing’s biological mother had deliberately switched the children at birth, Huaijin accompanied his parents to bring their biological son, Jiang Xun, home in December 2022 3 53.
The reunion did not produce an easy bond. Jiang Xun felt displaced by Zixing’s established place in the household, while Huaijin increasingly focused on his hostility toward Zixing. The belief that Jiang Xun had deliberately pushed Zixing down the stairs became a decisive reason for Huaijin’s rejection of him; the accusation was later disproved 3 21.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early conflicts and corrected accusations
Despite his resentment, Huaijin answers Jiang Xun’s emergency call after Ji Yuntian locks him in a hotel room with snakes. He brings hotel security and kicks the door open, but remains dismissive of Jiang Xun’s terror and initially refuses to help him off the bed 8 9.
His assumptions begin to encounter contrary evidence. During the dispute with Liu Ma, he suggests checking the villa’s surveillance footage, which reveals that she provoked Jiang Xun first. Later, he and Deng Shu question Uncle Wang and learn that Zixing fell down the stairs himself. Huaijin drives after Jiang Xun and brings him home 10 21.
The car accident
A drunk driver runs a red light and crashes into Huaijin’s Maybach. Jiang Xun instinctively shields him from the impact, leaving Huaijin shaken. After exiting the vehicle, Jiang Xun slips on a discarded watermelon rind, strikes his head, and is hospitalized 31.
When Huaijin asks why he protected him, Jiang Xun answers that they are brothers. Huaijin subsequently pats his head, tells him to prioritize his own safety, and stays overnight in the hospital. He recognizes that, despite their blood relationship, their long separation has made them near-strangers 31 32.
Discovering the diary
Huaijin’s growing affection becomes more practical: he transfers Jiang Xun two hundred thousand, takes him out for hot pot, and gives him hand cream after noticing the roughness and scars on his hands 42 43.
After driving Jiang Xun to Fu Yanli’s apartment, Huaijin finds his diary beneath the passenger seat. Its entries describe years of hunger, beatings, untreated hearing loss, and disappointment after returning to his biological family. Huaijin finishes reading in tears, then repeatedly rereads the notebook while struggling with guilt 53 54 55.
He apologizes to Jiang Xun by phone and gives the diary to his parents, insisting that they need to know the truth and seek treatment for Jiang Xun’s left ear. He later returns the notebook, admits that the family read it, and accompanies Jiang Xun to the hospital 58 63.
Breaking with Jiang Zixing
Huaijin initially tries to maintain affection for both younger brothers, acknowledging that Jiang Xun has reason to resent the person who occupied his identity. He advises Zixing to keep his distance rather than forcing reconciliation 52.
His position changes as Zixing’s conduct comes to light. He rebukes Zixing for enabling Jiang Yongqiang despite knowing what the man had done, telling him that Jiang Xun—not the rest of the family—is owed an apology 76.
At Zixing’s piano competition, Jiang Xun anonymously sends Huaijin a recording of Jiang Yongqiang revealing that Zixing had known his true parentage three years earlier. Huaijin questions Zixing, observes his evasions, and plays the recording before the family 106 109 110.
Following Zixing’s expulsion from the household, Huaijin arranges the removal of his belongings, including the instruments in the practice room Huaijin had prepared for his sixteenth birthday. He later refuses to visit Zixing after another reported fainting spell and rejects an attempt to turn him against Jiang Xun’s romantic relationship 115 116 147.
Discovering Jiang Xun and Fu Yanli’s relationship
Huaijin becomes suspicious of Fu Yanli’s attention during Jiang Xun’s hospitalization. He secretly follows Jiang Xun and witnesses the couple together, then grabs Fu Yanli’s collar and attempts to punch him, believing that a married older man has exploited his younger brother 124.
After seeing proof that Fu Yanli and Ye Jing divorced two years earlier, Huaijin reluctantly accepts the relationship. He warns Fu Yanli not to hurt Jiang Xun and to resolve matters with his nephew and parents. At Jiang Xun’s request, he keeps the relationship secret from their parents, later receiving a scolding for doing so 125 136.
Lin Jian and the three-year time skip
Huaijin initially doubts Jiang Xun’s sudden interest in music, expecting little more than a complete performance of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” When Jiang Xun becomes an internationally recognized pianist, Huaijin proudly boasts about him to everyone he meets 157.
Meanwhile, his interest in Lin Jian develops beyond their earlier acquaintance. He asks Jiang Xun about Lin Jian’s birthday preferences; Lin Jian subsequently becomes his assistant after interning at the Jiang Group. During a camping trip, Huaijin becomes jealous when Jiang Xun proposes sharing Lin Jian’s tent and eventually takes Jiang Xun’s place. By the chemotherapy arc, Huaijin and Lin Jian are explicitly a newly established couple 160 161 165.
Jiang Xun’s illness and death
During Jiang Xun’s chemotherapy, Huaijin and Lin Jian shave their heads in support. Huaijin also supervises his recovery meals, insisting that he eat despite his complaints about the bland food 165.
When Jiang Xun says goodbye, Huaijin breaks down and begs him not to abandon their family. After his death, Huaijin punches a wall hard enough to bloody his knuckles. Lin Jian stops him from hurting himself, and Huaijin embraces him while sobbing that he was not a good elder brother 171 172.
