Background / History
Cinema encounter and apprenticeship
Junpei is bullied by three thugs at a movie theater. Although furious and humiliated, he remains silent until Yagami Jue knocks one attacker unconscious and frightens the others away. Junpei thanks him, then follows him into the corridor to ask what becoming strong would cost 33.
Yagami urges him to abandon kindness and pursue strength ruthlessly. Mahito’s appearance and the ensuing battle expose Junpei to violence far beyond anything he has previously witnessed. After watching Yagami nearly defeat the Special Grade cursed spirit, Junpei kneels and asks to follow him 33 34.
Yagami demands ten million yen and orders him to report behind Jujutsu High the next day. Junpei secretly withdraws his mother’s fixed-term savings to pay the fee. Expecting jujutsu or meditation, he instead receives a demonstration of raw strength and begins painful bare-fisted rock training alongside Asakura Yuki 34 35.
Mahito’s attempted manipulation
While Yagami is unavailable during his physical evolution, disappearances in Shinjuku are linked to people who had contact with Junpei. Gojo assigns Yagami to retrieve him and authorizes lethal force if Junpei refuses; Yagami rejects the idea of killing his disciple 37 38.
At an abandoned complex, Mahito presents Junpei with three former tormentors transformed into monsters. Their suffering brings Junpei terror rather than satisfaction, but Mahito’s promise of “evolution” still tempts him. Remembering Yagami’s harsh advice, Junpei begins reaching toward Mahito before Yagami interrupts 38.
Yagami defeats the transfigured monsters and severely wounds Mahito, then carries Junpei out before the building collapses. Junpei declares that he wants Yagami’s destructive physical power rather than jujutsu. He accepts doubled training and agrees to keep paying tuition 38 39.
Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event
Junpei attends the event with Yagami and Asakura Yuki, entering the forest to practice against weaker curses while his teacher pursues a Special Grade target 41 42.
During the attack, Junpei is left gravely wounded and unconscious near the southeastern lake. Asakura shields him despite her own injuries until Yagami arrives and strikes Mahito away. Yagami confirms that Junpei is still breathing steadily 44 45.
Afterward, a battered Junpei proudly asks whether his refusal to retreat counts as a good performance. Yagami responds by tripling his training and warning that the world will soon descend into chaos. The following morning, Junpei is present during his teacher’s training, holding statistical reports and remarking that Yagami destroyed a three-million-yen target in one second 47.
Appearance
- Long bangs and gloomy eyes characterize his appearance at the cinema 33.
- Initially scrawny build, later showing developing muscle across his ribs 39.
- Blood-soaked fist bandages, bruises, bloodshot eyes, and dried blood around his mouth accompany his intensive tree-punching training 39.
- Battered and swollen face after the Goodwill Event attack 47.
Personality
Junpei initially suppresses his anger out of fear, enduring humiliation without confronting his bullies. His quiet thanks and hesitant questions contrast with the intense desire for strength awakened by Yagami’s intervention 33 34.
His desperation makes him susceptible to extreme guidance: he takes his mother’s savings to fund training and nearly accepts Mahito’s offer. Nevertheless, seeing his tormentors transfigured produces horror rather than pleasure, showing that his desire for revenge does not erase his aversion to their suffering 35 38.
His admiration for Yagami develops into fanatical worship. He endures brutal training, rejects Mahito’s route to power, and takes pride in not retreating during the event attack. He still protests when Yagami triples his workload, fearing the training will kill him 39 47.
