Background / History

Ye Ningshuang lived in poverty in Peaceful Town after her parents died, gathering medicinal herbs to sell to Doctor Li. She rescued Ying Huaixu after he fell from a cliff while fleeing the Evil Fiend. When she learned that he had gone to confront bandits who intended to abduct her, she notified the authorities and went looking for him herself 3 5 6 11.

Before this poverty, she had been a cherished daughter in a prosperous household in Wufeng Town. Her parents taught her to treat others kindly and not look down on the poor. During a famine, her father distributed food to refugees until the family could no longer afford to continue. Refugees then attacked their home, believing that food had been hidden, and killed her parents. Her parents protected her escape even as they died 105 107.

After Ying Huaixu destroyed the bandit hideout, she welcomed him into her home, collected his five-hundred-tael bounty, and arranged a medical examination for his bewildered behavior. She believed he had killed the bandits to repay her rescue, making their relationship one of mutual indebtedness in her eyes 3.

A wanted sexual predator later invaded her home after drugging her neighbors. Ying Huaixu intervened, while Ye Ningshuang sought Hall Master Zhao and Doctor Li to address the criminal and the unconscious residents. Following the criminal’s death, Lü Qingyi confirmed her Dark Mystery Spiritual Root and offered her entry into the Divine Firmament Sword Sect. She accepted after looking to Ying Huaixu for reassurance 8 9 10.

The sect’s Grand Ancestor had specifically appointed Lü Qingyi as her future master. Although the sect prepared high-quality cultivation pills for her, Lü Qingyi withheld special treatment while she remained an outer disciple, insisting that a bearer of destiny must learn to walk her own path 17 25.

After the Falling Radiance City mission, Ye Ningshuang left the sect to train. Her experiences exposed her to predatory cultivators, betrayal by intelligent beasts, the persecution of unaffiliated geniuses, and abuse within other sects. She killed those who targeted her and returned at Meridian Opening First Layer, entering the inner sect alongside Ying Huaixu 50 58.

She subsequently became Lü Qingyi's disciple. When Lü Qingyi's Divine Deer came to collect her, she insisted that Ying Huaixu be brought along as well. Her master's later discipline and instruction emphasized independent judgment and control over emotion rather than unquestioning obedience to a predetermined role 59 62 107 151.

Ye Ningshuang is repeatedly described as stunningly beautiful; Ying Huaixu notices her striking face, and onlookers remark on her beauty during the Xu Family confrontation 17 34.

Personality

Ye Ningshuang is caring but does not extend her compassion indiscriminately. She refuses to abandon Ying Huaixu when he heads into danger and attends to his food, lodging, and medical needs afterward. Even before becoming a cultivator, she believes evil people deserve death 3 6.

Her attachment to Ying Huaixu restores a sense of home she has lacked since her parents’ deaths. She feels unusually comfortable around him, cries when he proposes moving to an inn, and privately resolves to keep trying when she senses his emotional distance 6 17.

Her first killings initially make her vomit, but she quickly steadies herself without reassurance: the guards attacking her would not have spared her. Afterward, fear gives way to excitement and a desire for battle. Ying Huaixu’s survival-first explanation of violence helps her accept these feelings, and she comes to believe they share the same darker nature 33 34 36 39.

Her drive to improve is closely tied to catching up with Ying Huaixu and no longer holding him back. That ambition pushes her to hunt relentlessly, enter the forest depths alone, and compete for targets during the city purge 36 46.

Her experiences outside the sect broaden her understanding of evil beyond human criminals: she concludes that any intelligent creature can be wicked. She admires the relative order of the Divine Firmament Sword Sect and wishes to become someone like Lü Qingyi rather than remain a protected ornament 58 88.

Lü Qingyi teaches her to think for herself and not become a tool controlled by anger, other people, or the demand that she save the world. Ye Ningshuang later rejects the idea that destiny alone obliges her to be a selfless savior; whether she acts must depend on her own wishes and whether the world deserves saving 107 151.

Her affection becomes intensely possessive. She treats Xu Yaoyang's proximity to Ying Huaixu as a threat, resents He Xiuyuan interrupting opportunities to be alone with him, and develops a particularly hostile rivalry with Tai Wangshu. Her campaign to draw attention away from Ying Huaixu is motivated partly by protecting him from enemies and partly by preventing potential romantic rivals from discovering him 96 114 143 148 450.

She nevertheless distinguishes presenting herself as weaker from actually believing herself inferior. She tells Lü Qingyi that she prefers to let Ying Huaixu take the lead while he is present, but will intervene when he is endangered. As she matures, she becomes highly suspicious of arranged opportunities and hidden manipulation. She tests methods offered by untrustworthy companions, refuses potentially compromising cultivation techniques, and stages deception rather than openly revealing her full strength. Because accepted sect missions must be carried out, He Xiuyuan accompanies her, and Ying Huaixu joins because he remembers her involvement as essential to the world mission 26 29.

The journey accelerates both her cultivation and her change in temperament. She survives a wolf attack, makes her first human kills at the inn, and begins actively pursuing strength through soul-devouring beast hunts. Ying Huaixu notes that this transformation occurs earlier than in the game, where He Xiuyuan’s death and the Thousand Mechanisms Sect’s mockery had been its catalysts 31 33 36.

She helps purge Thousand Mechanisms Sect outposts and infiltrate the death-row prison beneath the City Lord’s residence. During the subsequent sect-led purge, she attacks those trapped by the formations that screen for karmic sins. The underground confrontation ends with her and He Xiuyuan incapacitated, forcing Ying Huaixu to abandon his pretense of unconsciousness and intervene 41 43 45 47.

After this near-disaster, Ying Huaixu commits to developing her strength rather than relying on the original plot to protect them 49.

Inner Sect Entry and Apprenticeship

After an absence during which Ying Huaixu cannot find her at the sect, Ye Ningshuang returns from training with a colder demeanor and Meridian Opening cultivation. The brutality she has witnessed reinforces her admiration for Lü Qingyi's reforms and her attachment to Ying Huaixu. She and Ying Huaixu enter the inner sect together 50 58.

When Lü Qingyi's Divine Deer arrives to bring her away, she refuses to go unless Ying Huaixu can accompany her. After becoming Lü Qingyi's disciple, her jealous killing intent toward He Xixiang earns confinement at Reflection Cliff. The lesson she takes from the subsequent instruction is to govern her own emotions and decisions 59 62 107.

She later supports the deliberate exposure of her talent through Xue Si. Rather than wishing to remain sheltered, she intends to draw out enemies and become someone capable of acting like her master 88.

Wufeng Town and the Black Mist

A return to her childhood town brings back memories of her parents' murder. At their graves, a black mist intensifies her hatred, shows her traumatic scenes, and offers overwhelming power in exchange for merging with it. Remembering Lü Qingyi's teaching, she refuses: her mortal enemies are already within her ability to defeat, so revenge does not justify surrendering her autonomy 105 107.

The mist attacks and takes her form. Ye Ningshuang calls for her senior martial brother rather than accepting its demands. She later explains that she had a way to confront the shadow herself but did not believe it would solve the problem permanently, making assistance the more reliable choice 107 109.

Thousand Mechanisms Sect and Shura Hall

Ye Ningshuang and He Xiuyuan fight through the Thousand Mechanisms Sect's territory while Ying Huaixu hides to let them experience its hostility. She uses black mist and Shadow Sword Dance, then digs a tunnel when a larger force surrounds them. They discover that stronger pursuers are concentrating on Ying Huaixu instead 125.

She subsequently blocks people following Ying Huaixu, kills them, and begins attacking Shura Hall's branches. Her motives include drawing danger away from him and building a reputation frightening enough to deter future romantic rivals. Her massacre of successive outposts forces Shura Hall to withdraw its bounties and flee, while public attention shifts toward her 148 149 150.

An encounter with an old diviner develops into a confrontation over her future role. Recognizing him as a sect senior, she states that saving the world must be her own decision rather than a duty imposed through prophecy or seniority 150 151.

Cold Pool Secret Realm and Netherworld Awakening

In the Cold Pool Secret Realm, Ye Ningshuang initially waits in a safe valley for Ying Huaixu. The shadow calls herself Nether Soul, claims to be a former Lord of the Netherworld, and identifies Xiao Gu as a former pet. Ye Ningshuang becomes increasingly concerned that someone has arranged her path 175 178.

She develops purified soul broth, advances rapidly, and turns slain demonic beasts into an expanding shadow army. Her strength forces other sects to recognize the danger she represents, briefly allowing Ying Huaixu to watch from the sidelines 179 189 191.

The crisis nevertheless requires Ying Huaixu's decisive action rather than the solitary resolution foretold for her. Afterward, Ye Ningshuang confronts Black Cat and Black Shadow for overriding her choices, obtains the Nether Soul Life-and-Death Talisman, and follows them toward a new opportunity only after testing their proposed control method 196 207.

Forced Spirit Sea Breakthrough and the Western Sea

In a dim world filled with monsters, Ye Ningshuang subjects herself to repeated bodily destruction and restoration to exceed her limits. When she reaches the peak of Sea of Qi but receives no heavenly tribulation, she detonates and rebuilds her Dantian eighty-one times. She forces entry into Spirit Sea, rapidly reaches its absolute peak, and develops complementary black and white seas 236.

She rejoins Ying Huaixu's mission after receiving his message. While waiting, she kills a merfolk child needed for the quest, then revives him with black mist so that he can guide the group to his clan 237 243.

During the Falling Star Clan conflict, she withstands sacrificial attacks and fights the fused clan beast. She ultimately burns her Spirit Sea and its souls to increase her power, then traps the beast in a Black Fog Cage. Separated from the group, she exploits a hall containing evil spirits and the Essence of the Ancient God. She accepts usable spiritual power but rejects bloodline alteration and god-tier cultivation techniques, suspecting that the apparent opportunities are bait laid by a mastermind. She instead has Black Shadow imitate her aura to complicate the enemy's plans 307 310.

Her later activities include playing along with an apparent poisoning scenario to support Ying Huaixu's deception and discovering ruins left by a Hongmeng native who had become an Outsiders Marshal after death 313 328.

She breaks through a spatial barrier, kills three Star-Swallowing Beasts, and reaches Dao Seal Ninth Layer. When the surviving enemies become nine ability-replicating armored figures, she takes three opponents herself. In the decisive battle, fighting alongside Ying Huaixu fulfills her long-standing desire to stand at his level 344 346.

Afterward, Ying Huaixu praises her strength and entrusts his back to her. She answers that he will no longer be alone. She later disciplines He Xiuyuan and Qin Erniu for wasting the broader potential of their talents before the group divides the secret realm's spoils and departs 355 363.

Netherworld Laws and the Grand Ancestor's Opportunities

Ye Ningshuang increasingly demands practical value and obedience from her companions. She warns Black Cat that treasure hunting alone is insufficient, then devours Netherworld laws to reach Spirit Aspect Fifth Layer. She confronts Shadow Slave's possession plans and asserts control through a soul imprint preserved in the Netherworld Sea 388 389.

Following her Black Sword, she encounters a phantom offering opportunities in exchange for conversation. She rejects the usefulness of a proposed whetstone, explaining that she can temper her own Dao heart, devour laws, and already unseal her sword. She instead takes an interest in a ring of Dao Stones that Ying Huaixu might improve 389 390.

Chalk Battles and Return to True

During the conflict involving faceless white monsters, Ye Ningshuang exposes an impersonator in a village and discovers that it has no soul. Her later battles against the Chalk generations reveal that she can nevertheless appropriate their evolving abilities, including shared immunities 408 415 417.

She manifests Lord of the Netherworld and the Fengdu-based Netherworld Underworld form, slaughtering large numbers of enemies with soul attacks and Life Severance. Against a Return to True fourth-generation Cretaceous, however, her ordinary Spirit Aspect power is initially inadequate 415 417 423.

Her second Spirit Aspect, Ningshuang, takes Ying Huaixu's form and synchronizes with his power. Ye Ningshuang exchanges the Little Azure Dragon's soul for a Dragon Clan meal and discusses An Ruoyun, the hidden Thousand Mechanisms Sect leadership, and Dream Province with Tai Wangshu. She explains that entering Dream Province prematurely could allow the unfinished Heart-Questioning Valley Instance to exploit her presence, and insists that Tai Wangshu consult Ying Huaixu before proceeding 475.

In a later battle, Ying Huaixu assigns her two Nine-Color Kings. Her purple duplicates copy the Three-Headed Dog's and Nine-Headed Bird's abilities and acquire immunity to their attacks.
