Background / History
Yu Xiaogang is the son of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s master, a Titled Douluo, and holds the title Horn of Wisdom within the Golden Iron Triangle. His background initially persuaded Dean Lin Nuo to accommodate him at Nuoding Academy despite his limited cultivation 4 10.
At the academy, he received free food and lodging but refused assigned teaching duties. He also rejected a prospective disciple with a Ghost Leopard martial soul and innate level-six soul power as unworthy, prompting the child to withdraw from the academy 4.
His relationships with Bibi Dong and Liu Erlong provided another source of influence. Both women loved him, while pressure from Spirit Hall and blood ties complicated those relationships. His second uncle, Yu Luomian, had long been displeased with him 27 40.
Appearance
Initially, Yu Xiaogang has refined, handsome features and a scholarly bearing despite looking dispirited. Accidental facial injuries and his later martial soul mutation substantially alter his appearance 4 27 29 50.
- Original features: Crew cut, medium but slightly thin build, somewhat thick lips, and an openly arrogant gaze 4.
- Facial scars: Numerous twisting scars remain after delayed treatment of cuts caused by a shattered cup 27 28 29.
- Concealment: Wears a black hooded robe while seeking treatment, then adopts a mask to hide his face 28 30.
- Possessed form: Gains Luo Sanpao’s nose, ears, skin color, and bloated physique, resembling the creature standing upright 49.
- Later changes: His mutated martial soul also changes his ordinary face and figure enough to make him look like a different person 50.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely concerned with status and recognition. He expects deference to his Grandmaster title, dismisses commoners, and initially seeks Li Mingzhu as a means to prove his theories and become famous as the teacher of a young Titled Douluo. His claim that no martial soul is useless contrasts with his refusal to teach students he considers insufficiently talented 4 5 23.
His pride repeatedly overrides practical judgment. He refuses to request clan assistance because he fears ridicule, delays seeking treatment to avoid being seen injured, and invents a heroic explanation for wounds caused by a household accident 27 28. Lin Nuo can exploit that same pride through flattery and comparisons with other people’s generosity 29.
He is persistent and manipulative when pursuing personal advancement. His attempts to gain access to Li Mingzhu escalate from offers of mentorship to deceptive soul-ring advice and threats involving Li Mu. After setbacks, he often restores his confidence through self-reassurance or explanations that preserve his self-image 22 23 31 32 49.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Soul Theory and Soul-Beast Knowledge
Yu Xiaogang is known as a theoretical Grandmaster and retains considerable knowledge of soul beasts even after losing his illustrated compendium 4 41.
- Offers guidance on soul-ring selection and cultivation paths when attempting to recruit Li Mingzhu 6.
- Rejects Lin Nuo’s research into exceptional Blue Silver Grass, insisting that greater age cannot change its supposedly worthless nature 20.
- Recommends a four-hundred-year tea stink bug to Li Mingzhu because it was his own first-ring source and he wants to compare the results—not because the advice is sincere 23.
- Proposes using a poison-attribute third ring to add poisonous properties to his existing gas-based skills; this plan is never realized 43 48.
Luo Sanpao
Initially, Luo Sanpao appears as a separate purple creature resembling both a pig and a dog. It acts independently enough to protect Yu Xiaogang from an attacking Swiftshadow Leopard 6 46.
- Uses soul rings to perform gas-based attacks 45.
- Physically rams an attacker to rescue its master 46.
- After the third-ring mutation, its separate living form disappears, leaving Luo Sanpao as Yu Xiaogang’s martial soul 49.
Soul Skills
| Skill | Ring | Effect and Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao | Yellow; one of his first two rings | Luo Sanpao inflates, leaps upward, turns, and releases a thunderous gas attack. Yu Xiaogang invokes it with “Fart like thunder, Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao!” 45 46 |
| Unnamed second soul skill | Yellow | Another gas-based skill; its individual effect is not described in the provided passages. It can be combined with Ignite 43 50. |
| Ignite | Third ring; white, ten-year Fire-Spitting Chicken | Produces a small flame from Yu Xiaogang’s backside while possessed. Alone, its flame is so weak that Lin Nuo doubts it could readily light firewood 48 49. |
Martial Soul Possession
His third-ring absorption causes Luo Sanpao’s spectral form to enter his body, enabling possession for the first time 49.
- Significantly improves strength, defense, and speed 49.
- Requires him to perform his gas-based soul skills himself rather than through a separate Luo Sanpao 50.
- Accompanies lasting side effects, including increased appetite, sleepiness, and changes to his face and physique 50.
Ignited Gas Combination
Lin Nuo devises a combination in which Yu Xiaogang immediately uses Ignite after his first or second soul skill, producing a powerful jet of burning gas 49 50.
- Its destructive power compares favorably with strong thousand-year-ring skills 50.
- The recoil throws Yu Xiaogang backward during testing 50.
- Its embarrassing execution makes it a last-resort survival technique rather than a routine attack 50.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Space Soul Tool — Inlaid with twenty-four jade stones, each providing one cubic meter of storage. He unsuccessfully uses it to tempt Li Mingzhu into accepting him as a teacher 6.
- Illustrated soul-beast compendium and books — Lost among his belongings; Li Mingzhu later learns extensively from materials taken from him 40 41 50.
- Mask — Conceals his facial scars and is also worn during the Swiftshadow Leopard encounter 30 45.
- Sharp knife — Used to repeatedly attack the young Swiftshadow Leopard after it injures him 46.
Relationships
- Li Mingzhu — Desired disciple, prospective research subject, and eventual adversary. Xiaogang never recognizes him as the architect of the schemes behind his breakthrough and disastrous third-ring acquisition 4 21 41 48.
- Lin Nuo / Dean Lin — Longtime host and reluctant helper. Protects Li Mingzhu’s right to refuse Xiaogang, arranges facial treatment, and assists his third-ring hunt in exchange for promised help obtaining a ten-thousand-year fifth ring 4 21 28 47 49.
- Bibi Dong — Loves him; her position as Spirit Hall’s Supreme Pontiff makes Li Mingzhu fear severe retaliation if Xiaogang is killed 27 31 40.
- Liu Erlong — Loves him, but blood ties are an obstacle to their relationship. Xiaogang fears her reaction if his pig-farm incident becomes known 27 40.
- His father — The unnamed clan master supplies cultivation resources. Xiaogang withholds his breakthrough circumstances because he believes his father would prioritize sharing the method with the clan 10 23 39.
- Yu Luomian — His second uncle, who has long disapproved of him 40.
- Su Ya / Ms. Su — Healing soul master who closes his facial wounds but cannot remove the established scars. She withholds her pain-relief skill during treatment 28 29 30.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Failed Recruitment and Experimental Scheme
Learning that Li Mingzhu has a Body martial soul and innate full soul power, Xiaogang assumes the boy possesses twin martial souls and seeks to recruit him. His titles, promises, and storage treasure fail to secure a disciple 4 5 6.
After concluding that Li Mingzhu has no twin martial souls, he instead hopes to study the boy’s mutation to resolve his own bottleneck. He waits outside the dormitory overnight and recommends his own first-ring source as an undisclosed experiment, only to learn that Li Mingzhu has already obtained a powerful first skill 21 22 23 24.
Disfigurement and Escalation
While angrily plotting how to make Li Mingzhu submit, Xiaogang falls face-first onto a cup and suffers extensive cuts. His delayed treatment leaves permanent scars, despite his fabricated claim that Blackback Wolves injured him during research 27 28 29.
He later tries to steer Li Mingzhu toward an old friend’s Shrek Academy. When challenged, he resorts to threatening Li Mu. Li Mingzhu protects his adoptive grandfather by pretending not to care about him, undermining the threat 31 32.
Breakthrough and Concealed Humiliation
Li Mingzhu plans to end Xiaogang’s harassment by helping him break his bottleneck while misleading him about the cause. As part of the scheme, he drugs Xiaogang and leaves him in a pigpen, where Xiaogang abuses the animals while impaired 35 37.
After reaching rank 30, Xiaogang hides the circumstances from his clan. Public notices condemn the unidentified offender, but his identity remains undisclosed. He abandons his designs on Li Mingzhu and unsuccessfully searches for his missing belongings 39 40 41.
Sabotaged Third Soul Ring
Xiaogang recruits Lin Nuo to hunt a Mandala Snake, hoping its poison will transform his existing skills. During the expedition, a young Swiftshadow Leopard severely injures both sides of his backside 42 43 46.
Li Mingzhu then stages a beast disturbance, knocks Xiaogang unconscious, and forces his hand to kill a ten-year Fire-Spitting Chicken. By concealing its white ring in front of the Mandala Snake’s purple ring, he tricks Xiaogang into absorbing the wrong one 48.
The absorption raises Xiaogang to rank 31 and unlocks possession, but grants only the weak Ignite skill. Lin Nuo persuades him that martial soul mutation caused the ring’s apparent downgrade, then develops the burning-gas combination that restores his confidence. Over the following three years, Xiaogang largely withdraws from academy life and concentrates on reaching rank 40 49 50.
