"Three times as much arcane energy was leaking out near the Dark Portal as before?" Danath Trollbane instinctively raised his voice.

"That's right!" Khadgar nodded, then explained:

"Those were our readings yesterday afternoon, but this morning, they returned to normal!"

Danath's brows immediately knitted together. He was an outstanding warrior, but clearly, he could hardly claim to understand anything related to magic.

"There are two possibilities!" Khadgar explained. "First, this was simply an accident. Perhaps we made some mistake in our measurements, or some strange factor we haven't yet understood affected them..."

"And the second?" Danath asked gravely.

"Something is happening on the other side of the Dark Portal!" Khadgar said quietly.

"That would be very bad news!" Danath stood up abruptly. "We must report this to King Varian of the Kingdom of Stormwind and Marshal Uther of the Kingdom of Lordaeron as soon as possible... have them dispatch armies immediately. If the Horde crosses the Dark Portal again, Nethergarde Keep won't be able to stop them!"

"There's no rush." Khadgar pondered for a moment, then shook his head. "We can't have the Alliance's armies march from the north to the southernmost tip of the continent on the strength of this one sign, which isn't exactly insignificant..."

"We need to keep observing for a while..." After a pause, Khadgar continued.

"Then I'll leave that to you mages!" Danath patted Khadgar on the shoulder. "I'll go inspect the defensive line and remind the soldiers to prepare for battle... otherwise, if the Horde really does cross the Dark Portal again, they'll still be in the dark!"

Khadgar nodded.

Danath left, while Khadgar sat back down at his desk.

His intuition told him that, although the sign was extremely slight, it conveyed an extraordinarily strong sense of danger.

Khadgar took out a quill.
