Background / History
Stormwind and Recruitment to Dalaran
Khadgar came from an ordinary Stormwind family whose limited finances prevented him from buying high-quality magical weapons. His talent nevertheless attracted exceptional attention: Polly Moni reported that his mental strength score was ten, a result Dalaran might not have seen in decades, and that every member of the Council of Six wanted him as a student 73 80.
At Dalaran’s dueling exercise, Khadgar faced Karin in the eleventh match. After losing his summoned water elemental, he used ice walls to restrict Karin’s movement and force a direct exchange. Karin overturned his advantage by scattering black powder to strengthen Flame Shock, winning the duel 76 77 78.
Both became Antonidas’s students and shared a room in the Violet Citadel. Because Karin had won, Kel’Thuzad assigned him the room’s only bed for the first month and left Khadgar the floor. Kel’Thuzad also supplied them with better staves and supervised their training, exposing weaknesses in Khadgar’s seemingly simple Mana Shield 79 80 83.
Khadgar subsequently helped Karin investigate the missing Archmage Alexis, presenting Antonidas’s written authorization to gain access to Alexis’s study. He also encountered Nalaras Sunstrider and Meryl Eastwind during their secret arrival at the citadel; Nalaras put him to sleep before he could send a warning 87 90.
The Karazhan Crisis
When Karin was selected to become Medivh’s assistant, Khadgar blamed his own unreliability. He believed that, as a human from Stormwind, he should have been the natural candidate and should have faced the danger himself 98.
Later, serving as Dalaran’s ambassador, Khadgar warned King Llane that Medivh was possessed by Sargeras and had opened the Dark Portal. Llane rejected the warning, but Anduin Lothar privately supported him and gathered reinforcements. Khadgar reunited with Karin and Kel’Thuzad, then accompanied them back to Karazhan 139 140.
Inside the tower, Khadgar witnessed a vision of a plate-armored mage fighting orcs and demons. He also detected an unsettling energy in the cellar that prompted the party to investigate further. During the confrontation with the possessed Medivh, his attempted sneak attack was reflected back at him, leaving him unconscious. He survived with relatively minor injuries 142 144 148 150.
Archmage and Monk Training
After returning to Dalaran, Khadgar reached the Sixth Ring. His casual explanation of the breakthrough provoked Karin into striking him; afterward, Khadgar sought out a pandaren martial artist so that he could learn to fight bare-handed 161 162.
The monk taught him Drunken Fist and Crane Kick, and instructed him to shave his head and eyebrows to help calm his mind. While practicing Crane Kick, Khadgar accidentally launched Mr. Bigglesworth and his food bowl into the air, injuring the cat. He fled to Karin for help avoiding Kel’Thuzad’s anger 176 227.
Under the alias Mankrik, Khadgar accompanied Karin during the Alterac operation. At Durnholde, he used Mirror Image and Invisibility to leave his assigned room undetected and search for Karin’s objective. He later helped Karin steal an orc infant, returning more than two months after their earlier visit to reduce suspicion 179 181 182 188.
Explosives and the Rescue at Grim Batol
Khadgar eventually returned from Quel’Thalas with Karin and Kel’Thuzad. To avoid punishment for injuring Mr. Bigglesworth, he agreed to meditate for twelve hours each day 227 228.
He then helped develop Karin’s explosives project. Initially dismissing the unstable substance as less useful than an archmage’s own spells, he embraced the idea once Karin explained that it would give ordinary soldiers comparable destructive power. Khadgar coordinated alchemists, clothmakers, and blacksmiths to produce stronger, iron-cased bombs 228 232.
During the Grim Batol operation, Khadgar infiltrated Nekros’s position under invisibility and seized the Dragon Soul. Its loss allowed Tiranastasz to turn on Nekros, while Alexstrasza was freed. Khadgar then handed the artifact to Karin 243 248.
Nethergarde Keep
After the Second War, Khadgar volunteered to lead Dalaran’s contingent at Nethergarde Keep. Karin recognized the decision as an expression of his pride and determination to prove himself. Khadgar selected elite battlemages to monitor the closed Dark Portal and prepare for another invasion 268 269.
Over nearly a year in the Blasted Lands, he became a dependable counterpart to Danath Trollbane. His research detected major fluctuations in the portal’s leaking arcane energy, and he warned both Nethergarde’s defenders and Dalaran that the Horde might return 292 295.
When the Horde overwhelmed the Alliance’s forward defenses, Khadgar stayed behind to cover the retreat. He cast the Eighth Ring spell Frozen Land, delaying the pursuers long enough for Danath’s troops to escape, then teleported away using a modified Dark Portal fragment. The effort exhausted him so severely that he remained unconscious for two days. He later witnessed Karin’s floating city arrive to relieve the besieged keep 302 304.
Expedition to Draenor
Before crossing the Dark Portal, Khadgar explained that the armored mage from his Karazhan vision had been his future self. He accepted responsibility for pursuing the Horde while Karin focused on Deathwing 315.
Khadgar helped lead the assault on Hellfire Citadel and defeated the ogre mage Dentha, but learned that the Horde’s Warchief had already departed to conduct a ritual. Dentha died without revealing his destination. Continuing the pursuit, Khadgar and Danath accepted help from the draenei priest Nimreyan, who identified Karabor as the orcs’ destination and guided the Expeditionary Force toward a secret route near Auchindoun 322 323 327.
Appearance
- Build: Short and slight during his youth 79 140.
- Face: Reasonably handsome, with a boyish appearance still evident at nineteen 227 264.
- Monk appearance: Shaved his head and eyebrows completely and wore loose leather armor 176.
- Later appearance: Had short hair by the Lordaeron summit; his features became more sharply defined during his posting in the Blasted Lands 264 292.
- Clothing and armor: Wore violet mage robes early on and brown robes as a Seventh Ring mage, but developed a lasting preference for heavy plate armor 80 179 264 292.
Personality
Khadgar is playful, boastful, and habitually irreverent. He teases Karin about his romantic relationships, enjoys praise for his talent, and initially treats elementary spell practice as beneath him. Kel’Thuzad’s discipline quickly exposes the gap between his confidence and the quality of his execution 80 82 179 227 264.
His carefree behavior does not erase his loyalty. He feels personally responsible when Karin is sent into danger, trusts Karin’s warning about Medivh despite King Llane’s dismissal, and is prepared to go to Karazhan without royal support. His rivalry with Karin also carries genuine pride: volunteering for Nethergarde is his way of proving that he can shoulder dangerous responsibilities independently 98 139 269.
By his time at Nethergarde, Danath considers him intelligent and dependable. Khadgar demonstrates that reliability by remaining behind to protect retreating soldiers, even at the cost of exhausting himself completely 292 302.
Abilities & Skills
Magical Talent and Memory
- Exceptional mental strength: His reported score of ten makes him an unusually desirable apprentice; his reserves give him an early advantage over Karin 73 76 77.
- Rapid memorization: Claims he can completely memorize material after looking at it for only a few seconds, making study notes unnecessary for him 79.
- Arcane perception: Detects powerful magical presences, unsettling energy, and subtle changes that less sensitive observers miss 87 144 227.
Abjuration
His primary magical school emphasizes defensive spells 76.
- Mana Shield: Casts the spell readily, but Kel’Thuzad shatters his early version using only Fourth Ring power and orders extensive remedial practice 80.
- Frost Armor: Absorbs much of Karin’s Arcane Missiles during their duel 76.
- Arcane Barrier: Uses the Third Ring defense before exchanging Flame Shocks with Karin 77.
- Magic Shield: Blocks Dentha’s Green Wave during their duel at Hellfire Citadel 322.
Evocation and Battlefield Control
- Fire magic: Uses Flame Shock in his duel with Karin and Fireball during the assault on Hellfire Citadel 77 322.
- Frostbolt and ice walls: Combines direct attacks with barriers that restrict an opponent’s movement and Blink options 76 77.
- Frozen Land: Covers hundreds of yards in ice and snow, slowing or freezing pursuing orcs. Casting this Eighth Ring spell as a Seventh Ring mage leaves him completely depleted; it does not establish an Eighth Ring breakthrough 302.
- Controlled violet beams: Reassembles beams blocked by Dentha’s shield and uses them to bind the ogre from behind while attacking from another direction 322.
Conjuration, Illusion, and Infiltration
- Water elemental: Summons an elemental and coordinates its water bolts with his own attacks. Karin destroys it after Khadgar separates from it to attempt a flanking maneuver 76.
- Mirror Image: Leaves an image in bed to conceal his absence at Durnholde 182.
- Invisibility: Uses concealment to infiltrate Durnholde and steal the Dragon Soul from Nekros 182 248.
- Eagle Eye: Enhances his vision while examining Horde activity near the Dark Portal 316.
Martial Arts and Armored Combat
- Drunken Fist: His pandaren teacher considers him talented in the style 176.
- Crane Kick: Learns the technique, though an accident during practice injures Mr. Bigglesworth 176 227.
- Combined physical and magical attacks: Forces Dentha to defend against an iron-fisted strike while previously blocked magic binds him from behind 322.
- Armored survival: Heavy plate and nimble footwork protect him during the Horde’s assault. The armor nevertheless slows his movement and makes carrying a staff inconvenient 179 302.
Research and Explosives Production
- Explosive stabilization: Helps Karin develop unstable alchemical explosives for use by non-mages 228.
- Production coordination: Secures washed, thoroughly dried runecloth and arranges alchemical production estimated at ten to twenty tons of liquid per month; combines the liquid with cloth fibers to create an explosive stronger than dwarven black powder 232.
- Portal analysis: Collects samples and magical readings to investigate the Dark Portal’s operation and detect abnormal energy leakage 292 295.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Early wand: A short, inexpensive weapon reflecting his family’s limited means 76 80.
- Staff of Jordan: Supplied by Kel’Thuzad, who dismisses its hundred-gold price as modest. The supplied staves have brown fir shafts and ruby heads 80.
- Heavy plate armor: Obtained from Turalyon through Karin. Khadgar values its protection and its resemblance to the armor he saw in Karazhan’s vision 179 315.
- Magic Device: Used to measure changes in arcane energy leaking from the Dark Portal 292.
- Modified Dark Portal fragment: Enables his escape after casting Frozen Land 302.
- Dragon Soul: Briefly carries the stolen artifact before transferring it to Karin 248.

“So this was destined to happen long ago. There’s nothing to be afraid of...” 315
Trivia
- Khadgar’s fondness for plate armor forms a self-fulfilling loop: he imitates an armored mage seen in Karazhan, then later realizes that the mage was himself 142 179 315.
- Unlike the Khadgar remembered from Karin’s previous-life account, he is not transformed into a white-haired old man during the Karazhan confrontation 150.
- He becomes seasick immediately after Derek Proudmoore’s flagship sets sail, despite having tolerated an earlier, unusually steady destroyer journey without difficulty 180 199.
