Background and History
Transmigration and the Sunfury Family
Karin awakens in Azeroth with memories of a previous life and recognizes Quel'Thalas from World of Warcraft. His new body belongs to a peripheral member of the Sunfury family. Its former owner was a withdrawn apprentice who confessed to Vereesa Windrunner during the Midsummer Festival after Enclair Morningwind encouraged him. Vereesa rejected him, and her furious suitors subsequently beat him severely 1.
The new Karin no longer shares his predecessor’s infatuation. He accepts the Windrunner healing potion Vereesa brings, but first asks the All-Knowing Eye to analyze its ingredients. After recovering, he confronts Enclair, learns that the confession was a deliberate test of Vereesa’s response, and prevents Oliver from starting a fight 2 3.
His rapid advancement earns recognition from the Sunfury family. After reaching the First Ring, he receives an official mage robe, a congratulatory letter from Kane Sunfury, and access to Sunfury Spire’s facilities and novice library 15.
Enclair’s Duel and the Morningwind Feud
Karin defeats Enclair in a formal duel, using defensive magic to withstand his Fireballs and Melf’s Acid Arrow to inflict an injury that the Morningwind family cannot readily cure. Enclair’s father, Dune Morningwind, later attacks Karin and attempts to force him to accompany him home 14 18.
Karin escapes on his hawkstrider while shielding himself and delaying Dune with Acid Arrow. Tiffany intervenes before the pursuing Third Ring mage can overpower him. She later gives Karin Dune’s staff, and the Sunfury family’s protection effectively ends the feud 18 19 22.
Voyages and Ghostlands Service
Karin joins Captain Leguli’s trading company aboard the Advance, maintaining its Arcane Boiler in exchange for a position on the voyage. The work leaves him substantial time to study, and Nathanos becomes an attached traveling companion 26 27 32 37.
On returning, Karin learns that his family has enrolled him as an instructor mage for a ranger squad in the Ghostlands. His principal teaching responsibility is Melf’s Acid Arrow, a useful counter to troll regeneration 40 43.
His placement alongside Vereesa’s rangers revives their earlier hostility. After Morgan and Brew attack him, Karin subdues both and forces a negotiated stand-down with Vereesa. A later confrontation with Sylvanas results in his departure for dangerous Quel'lithien 42 47 48.
During the crisis there, Liadrin refuses to leave him behind, and Halduron joins their attempted breakout. Karin reaches the Third Ring, then accepts an emergency energy transfer from the All-Knowing Eye to escape the trolls with both companions. The transfer leaves the Eye dormant 53 54 56 57.
Studies in Dalaran
After Karin’s service ends, Kane praises his creativity and arcane instincts, provides spells suited to his new rank, and recommends further study in Dalaran. Kael'thas supplies introductions, but Karin struggles to secure a suitable teacher and spends months studying independently 58 59 60 65 66 68 69.
A lecture by Modera prompts him to investigate mathematical relationships between related spells. Through calculations and practical tests, he derives a model connecting fire-spell power, mental effort, and phlogiston concentration. This makes Flame Shock substantially easier for him to cast 70 71.
At Dalaran’s apprentice-selection gathering, Karin defeats the more powerful Khadgar by strengthening his final Flame Shock with black powder. Antonidas accepts him as a student. Asked why he studies magic, Karin answers that he wants to understand the world and change it 76 77 78.
Karazhan and Medivh’s Legacy
Karin travels to Karazhan as Medivh’s new assistant and becomes responsible for its neglected library. Access to the collection expands his knowledge, but Medivh’s erratic behavior and the tower’s disturbances lead him to send carefully worded warnings to Antonidas 101 109 111 112.
His work brings him into contact with Stormwind’s leaders, Prince Varian, and Garona. He initially fights Garona as an intruder before learning that Medivh has invited her to Karazhan 119 120 128.
During the confrontation with Sargeras, Karin relies on his knowledge of Gul'dan’s self-interest. He allows Sargeras to draw close, counting on Gul'dan’s betrayal to give Medivh a brief opportunity to regain control. Karin delivers the fatal strike, and Lothar beheads Medivh to ensure Sargeras’s defeat 148 150.
Karin buries Medivh, Moroes, and Kuke near Karazhan. Medivh’s will names all three as beneficiaries, leaving Karin the only surviving heir. He promises to honor Medivh’s wishes by opposing the orcs and closing the portal 150.
Alliance Service and Return to Quel'Thalas
After returning to Dalaran as a Sixth Ring mage, Karin warns Antonidas about the orc threat. He also uses his relationship with Kael'thas to urge greater vigilance against a Horde–Amani alliance 160 171 172.
Lothar sends Karin to Alterac with a small force. Arriving with more than fifty Quel'Thalas rangers, he refuses to be dismissed by King Aiden Perenolde and secures permission to inspect the kingdom’s defenses 176 185.
Karin later returns to Sunfury Spire with intelligence that the Horde is massing in the Hinterlands and has allied with the trolls. After the Horde withdraws from Quel'Thalas, Sylvanas thanks him for warning the kingdom and saving her family. She apologizes for sending him into danger; Karin slaps her once and declares their dispute settled 205 226.
Grim Batol and the Campaign Beyond Azeroth
Karin proposes attacking Grim Batol while the Horde is occupied in Hillsbrad, recruiting Khadgar, Kel'Thuzad, and Kurdran’s gryphon riders. His dealings with the red dragons are complicated by Derek’s death: he holds the dragons responsible for their killings even though they acted under coercion 243 250.
Alongside his military work, Karin develops ley-line-powered technology and helps create a second floating city intended to supply Wildhammer riders on long-range missions 291 297.
He later presses to cross the Dark Portal specifically to confront Deathwing. After Deathwing’s battle with Alexstrasza, Karin confirms the black dragon’s death, orders the body transported to Naxxramas, and rescues the gravely wounded Red Dragon Queen. He then directs the Floating City southeast toward the Black Temple for the decisive battle against the Horde 315 329.
Appearance
- High-elven features: A handsome face, pointed ears, and pale blue eyes; Karin identifies himself as a high elf rather than a blood elf from his reflection 1 73.
- Early robes: Bright red Quel'Thalas mage robes bearing a rank emblem on the right breast. His First Ring robe also enhances his mana 15.
- Later rank: Recognized as a Sixth Ring Blue Robe after the Karazhan crisis 171.
- Accessories: Wears black-frame glasses and carries both a staff and, during part of the story, the sword Glamdring 128 132.
Personality
Karin is analytical, studious, and experimental. He applies mathematics from his previous life to spellcasting rather than relying solely on traditional descriptions. Kane identifies his imagination, creativity, and keen arcane instincts as particular strengths 59 70 71.
He generally restrains himself when confrontation would be futile, but does not confuse caution with forgiveness. He stops Oliver from attacking Enclair, endures Sylvanas’s orders when resistance would be suicidal, and later insists on settling their dispute directly 3 48 226.
He is affectionate and protective toward his friends, especially Liadrin, while exchanging frequent insults and practical jokes with Khadgar. He also has an unforgiving sense of responsibility: the red dragons’ coercion does not, in his view, absolve them of Derek’s death 54 82 84 143 179 250.
His ideal mage combines scholarship, spellcasting, and swordsmanship rather than remaining permanently secluded in a tower. When teaching, he emphasizes that magic is a tool and that a mage’s real strength is wisdom 43 231.
Abilities and Skills
All-Knowing Eye and Foreknowledge
The All-Knowing Eye is a magical creation within Karin’s mind that provides instruction and analysis 2 5 7.
- Identifies people through voice comparisons against Karin’s memories 2 3.
- Detects hostility, estimates combat strength and survival probabilities, and analyzes magical effects and substances 2 14 15 45.
- Guides meditation, spell acquisition, and experimentation 7 27 273.
- Emergency transfer: Supplies three unrestricted Seventh Ring spell slots during the Quel'lithien escape. Karin uses Multiple Arcane Missiles and Mass Teleport, but remains a Third Ring mage; the Eye enters hibernation afterward 57.
- Previous-life knowledge: Karin recognizes historical events and personalities, most decisively using his understanding of Gul'dan to engineer Sargeras’s defeat 128 150.
Abjuration and Containment
Abjuration is Karin’s principal school, with evocation as his secondary field 76 105.
- Ice Shield, Frost Armor, and Arcane Barrier: Form the core of his early defensive fighting style 14 18 77.
- Binding Spell: Reverses Mana Shield to restrain a target. Karin can progressively shrink the enclosure and recognizes that continued compression could crush its occupant 42.
- Ice Block: A Fifth Ring defense capable of withstanding almost all physical damage 114.
- Imprisonment: Improved through studying Aegwynn’s and Medivh’s writings. He uses it against Garona and later to contain Biluo Hua’s Light of Truth 128 224.
- Limits: His early defenses cannot withstand repeated Third Ring attacks without rapidly exhausting his mental reserves 18 19.
Mathematical Evocation
Karin develops formulas linking related fire spells to a caster’s capabilities, mental expenditure, and surrounding phlogiston concentration 70 71.
- Uses calculus and controlled Fireball tests to estimate the effort required for Flame Shock 70.
- Scatters black powder to increase local phlogiston and strengthen his winning attack against Khadgar 77 78.
- Works with Wadela, Kel'Thuzad, and Khadgar to test nitroglycerin as a stronger reagent 85.
- Produces an unstable Pyroblast at the Fourth Ring, but the projectile falls before reaching its target 85.
- Keeps his broader conclusions about arcane magic private, fearing the consequences of revealing them before he is sufficiently powerful 71.
Melf’s Acid Arrow
Karin learns this obscure Second Ring conjuration spell from the All-Knowing Eye. It transfers acidic material prepared from rhubarb leaves and a viper’s stomach onto a dart, then magically launches it 9 10.
- Interferes with troll regeneration, making it valuable for ranger instruction 18 43.
- Leaves Enclair with lingering injuries that his family cannot readily dispel 18.
- Becomes associated with Karin as a patented spell 43.
- Is relatively weak against an experienced mage who can evade it 19.
Mobility and Transformation
- Blink: Uses short-range teleportation and terrain to evade Khadgar’s attacks 76.
- Teleportation: By the Fifth Ring, can teleport short distances to known locations, but lacks sufficient mental power for longer journeys 105.
- Polymorph: Temporarily transforms an orc scout into a sheep 114.
- Flight: Initially relies on Levitate, Slow Fall, or mounts; later becomes capable of transforming into a raven 113 224 269.
Swordsmanship
Karin studies swordsmanship with Varian and consults Karazhan’s books, becoming a passable fighter rather than a dedicated warrior 128.
- Blocks Garona’s dagger with Glamdring during their encounter 128.
- Kills lesser demons with his sword to conserve mental energy for the confrontation ahead 132.
- Combines raven transformation, containment magic, and a close-range sword threat during Biluo Hua’s deliberately restrained test 224.
Alchemy and Accelerated Maturation
- Brews Lion’s Strength, Lesser Healing, Lesser Mana, and Lesser Troll’s Blood potions before his first major voyage 26.
- Uses Touch of Fatigue while drinking with Myra Dawnblade to facilitate questioning 45.
- Experiments with accelerated maturation, progressing from mice to oversized boars intended for food production rather than weapons 273.
- Acknowledges to Medivh that his early alchemical knowledge is comparatively shallow 105.
Arcane Engineering
- Arcane Boiler: Maintains the Advance by making its mana crystals resonate and release energy 26.
- Norgannon’s Core: Develops a device that draws power from ley lines. After an initial lamp test, installs an improved version in Naxxramas’s flight circle, replacing its gems and successfully raising the city 291.
- Mobile gryphon base: Plans the second floating city as a replenishment point for supplies and explosives, extending Wildhammer riders’ operational range 297.
