This failure was only the beginning!
At least, that was how it was for Karin... It did not take him long to calculate where the discrepancy lay.
What came next became simple.
After some brief practice and adjustments... he finally succeeded!
A fireball like an enormous boulder, enhanced by nitroglycerin, struck its target with perfect accuracy.
"There is reason to believe this fireball's power rivals that of a normal 'Pyroblast'... You could even call it a Fifth Ring 'Pyroblast'!" Kel'Thuzad remarked as he looked at the target smashed to pieces ahead.
"Unbelievable..." Khadgar shook his head, his eyes wide. "Karin, you actually did it!"
A Fourth Ring mage had cast a Fifth Ring spell above his own rank. This was almost impossible.
The theory behind this dated back to the half-elf archmage Adilo, thousands of years ago. He had proposed a concept called "spell slots"...
Even if a mage possessed enough mental power to sustain a spell above his rank, successfully casting it was still extremely difficult (for example, a third-ring mage could almost never successfully cast any Fourth Ring spell)! Adilo called this a lack of sufficient spell slots. Adilo proposed that whether a mage could successfully cast a spell depended first on whether his mental power met the requirements, and second on whether his spell slots were up to standard!
Based on his explorations at the time, Archmage Adilo had also compiled the "spell slot periodic table," dividing all the spells explored so far into the first through tenth rings... After thousands of years of research, this table had been further expanded and revised, becoming the standard for distinguishing the ranks of spells.
But today, there seemed to be an exception to this theory!
"Could this just be an enhanced Fireball, rather than a real Pyroblast?" Khadgar asked
