Background / History
Shen Yu was abandoned at an orphanage entrance because of his poor health. Lin Yujing, who had lost her own children, adopted him. Although outsiders later label him the Shen family’s “fake young master,” his parents knew he was adopted; his discovery of that status is not a revelation to them 4 18.
He was a sturdy, popular child in kindergarten. Other children gathered around him, and he returned home with cheeks reddened from being pinched. He befriended Yao Maolin and intervened when a group of children bullied Ji Cicen, pulling down the ringleader’s trousers to break up the attack 80 140.
Illness later left him frail and withdrawn. At nine, he nearly drowned after Shen Xingshuo carried him out to play. His accusations after waking deeply hurt Xingshuo and contributed to the older brothers’ estrangement from home 2.
At the story’s opening, Shen Yu believes he has been reborn into a wealthy-family novel. He remembers an impoverished life spent studying and working, with parents who died early and childhood meals supplied by different households. His recollections of both that life and the novel are incomplete. He initially fails to recognize Ji Cicen, but later recalls their childhood meeting in a letter 1 5 87 109 116.
Appearance
- Childhood build: Underdeveloped, with thin limbs and a small frame. At twelve, he looks younger and shorter than his age 2.
- Eyes and hair: Large, round, almond-shaped eyes and a prominent tuft of hair that his brothers frequently press down 2 23 130.
- Growth: His cheeks fill out under the family’s care, but he remains slender. Butler Liu attributes his continued bean-sprout appearance partly to picky eating and limited exercise 46 74.
- Later appearance: Nearly 180 cm tall, with a tall, lean figure emphasized by his custom black formal suit. His composed appearance often disappears as soon as he begins joking or asking for praise 138 180.
Personality
Shen Yu is cheerful, talkative, and quick to recover from disappointment. Shen Jin particularly admires his ability to regulate his emotions and distinguish between matters worth worrying about and those he can let go. He takes genuine pride in other people’s happiness and achievements, especially his brothers’ 55 156 160.
He openly aspires to a comfortable, dependent life. He dislikes strenuous exercise, procrastinates over homework, and readily accepts being pampered at home. Family indulgence makes him increasingly mischievous: he sulks while waiting to be coaxed, stages exaggerated displays of heartbreak, and uses nonsense to escape awkward conversations 23 47 80 106 133.
His laziness does not extend to protecting loved ones. He worries about the Shen family’s original fate, searches for its missing children, and reacts instinctively when his brothers face danger. His affection can also make him conspicuously biased: he sees Shen Jin as a delicate victim who can do no wrong, while friends receive much sharper teasing 5 55 59 111.
Despite his easygoing manner, Shen Yu notices emotional discomfort. When Lin Yujing becomes overwhelmed by his approaching adulthood, he draws his younger brothers into entertaining her. He also considers the burden on the family’s bodyguard rather than treating the man’s presence as merely an inconvenience 137 180.
Abilities & Skills
Knowledge of the Original Plot
Shen Yu remembers fragments of the novel he believes he has entered. These recollections identify threats before the family would otherwise recognize them 1 4.
- Missing children: Recalls the biological children’s poor living conditions and the abuse that threatens one brother’s leg 5 7.
- Entertainment-industry danger: Associates Shen Xingshuo’s career with the protagonist and the Shen family’s eventual downfall 7 21 29.
- Hidden motives: Recognizes Xiao Yuzhen as a future threat to Ye Qingwan, the Ye family’s assets, and Shen Jun 70.
- Limitations: His memory is fragmentary, sometimes blurred, and poor on details concerning supporting characters. Changed events also undermine his original expectations 5 27 43.
Involuntary Thought Transmission
Members of the Shen family can hear Shen Yu’s unspoken thoughts. Shen Yu is unaware of this, and the family deliberately keeps it secret to avoid frightening him 1 2 4.
- Early manifestation: Shen Xingshuo hears his silent mockery during their first encounter after his apparent rebirth 1.
- Practical effect: His private worries give the family warnings and information he has not explained aloud 4 70.
- Everyday consequences: His nighttime fretting keeps the family awake, while his relatives must conceal their reactions to his internal commentary 14 58 80.
- Decline: His thoughts become less audible as he grows older, except around major incidents 169.
- Disappearance: The family realizes they have heard nothing since his coming-of-age birthday. They interpret this as an opportunity for him to enjoy adulthood and privacy, rather than establishing a definite cause 183.
Academic Ability
Shen Yu is not as naturally gifted as Shen Jun and Shen Jin, but his poor self-assessment does not mean he is an unsuccessful student. His stronger results come through sustained work and tutoring 119 134 156.
| Milestone | Chapter | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Unsuccessful attempt at tutoring | 21 | Offers to teach his younger brothers, then discovers he cannot understand their English book despite his remembered schooling. |
| Elementary review | 23 | Keeps pace with their lessons but loses marks after mixing up multiplication tables. |
| Middle-school material | 46 | Finds his younger brothers already studying seventh-grade mathematics and worries about falling behind them. |
| Catch-up after hospitalization | 118 119 | Receives textbooks, assignments, and tutoring after missing three months of high school. |
| Subject selection | 121 | Chooses politics, history, and biology. |
| Strong class performance | 156 | Ranks near the top of his class; his chosen-subject results make him a teacher’s favorite. |
| Citywide mock examination | 172 | Scores 120 in mathematics and celebrates more stable science results. |
| University attendance | 187 | Takes part in campus military training at the ending. |
Resourcefulness and Physical Limits
- Improvised confrontations: Uses unconventional tactics rather than demonstrated combat expertise, from humiliating a kindergarten bully to exposing Xiao Yuzhen’s secret girlfriend 70 140.
- Willingness to fight: Punches Zhao Hang for bullying Shen Jin and urges his brother not to suffer attacks without resisting 59.
- Limited athleticism: Suggests sanda or boxing, but Shen Jin is the brother explicitly shown training regularly. Shen Yu remains physically awkward and reluctant to exercise 23 24 74 75.
- Learned coordination: Improves from no consecutive volleyball bumps to ten over several lessons, though he still has to chase the ball 94.
Relationships
- Lin Yujing — Adoptive mother. Takes him in after losing her biological children and continues treating him as her cherished son after the twins return. Shen Yu is attentive to her feelings about his growing up 18 180.
- Shen Changgeng — Adoptive father. Protects and indulges him while teasing his silliness. Publicly expresses pride in the kindness the family has nurtured in him 18 114 160.
- Shen Xubai — Eldest brother. Oversees his care, schooling, and safety; also places an entertainment investment in Shen Yu’s name. His patience has limits when Shen Yu neglects homework for his phone 10 24 133.
- Shen Xingshuo — Second brother and frequent sparring partner in jokes. Their initially strained relationship becomes openly affectionate. Shen Yu worries about his career, praises him online in secret, and eagerly visits him at work 2 26 77 165.
- Shen Jun / Cheng Jun — Younger brother by family order. Shen Yu fusses over his health and recovery; Shen Jun often regards Shen Yu as another younger brother who needs looking after 11 46 48 75.
- Shen Jin / Cheng Jin — Youngest brother. Initially reluctant to call Shen Yu his older brother, he first does so openly after Shen Yu defends him from Zhao Hang. Shen Yu’s later rescue prompts deeper guilt, affection, and protectiveness 59 119.
- Ji Cicen — Childhood friend, deskmate, and eventual boyfriend. Shen Yu once defended him from bullies; Ji later provides daily care, snacks, study supervision, and protection from gossip. Their relationship becomes official after a date and confession 128 130 140 164 184.
- Yao Maolin — Childhood friend and classmate. Trades insults with Shen Yu, complains about being neglected in favor of his brothers, and helps explain his forgotten childhood connection to Ji Cicen 55 80 87.
- Uncle Liu / Butler Liu — Long-serving caregiver. Helps with Shen Yu’s mobility, arranges his preferred food, and monitors his eating habits and physical development 1 4 74.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Changing the Shen Family’s Fate
- Shen Yu’s initial delight at wealthy-family life turns to panic when he remembers that the family is destined for ruin and that he occupies the role of its sickly “fake” heir 1.
- Rather than conceal the existence of the biological child, he anxiously tries to prompt a search. His directions and remembered plot details help the family find Cheng Jun and Cheng Jin ahead of the original storyline 4 5 7.
- He welcomes the twins without treating them as rivals. Only after celebrating their return does he belatedly wonder what his own position will be; his parents explain that he was adopted 10 18.
- His later thoughts repeatedly expose threats, allowing the family to avoid dangers that originally contributed to its collapse 70 169 171.
Protecting Shen Xingshuo’s Career
- Fearing the entertainment plot, Shen Yu tries unsuccessfully to dissuade Shen Xingshuo from entering the industry 7 23.
- He becomes a small investor through funds placed in his name and travels to visit the talent competition 24 29 30.
- He recognizes Chu Yao as the person who originally brought down the Shen family for Qiao Luo’s sake, but finds him much more childish than expected. He refuses to help bring Chu Yao and Qiao Luo together 29 31 32.
- Events diverge from his recollections. Shen Xubai and Shen Xingshuo identify Yang Yi’s schemes as a possible explanation for the original conflict, rather than simply accepting Shen Yu’s first interpretation 43.
School Bullying and the Knife Attack
- Shen Yu confronts Zhao Hang for cornering Shen Jin, punches him, and checks his brother for injuries. The incident earns Shen Jin’s first public acknowledgment of him as “Brother” 59.
- Han Qiao later attacks Shen Jin with a knife at the school gates. Shen Yu instinctively pushes him aside, loses his balance, and strikes the back of his head on the concrete 111.
- He remains unconscious for three months despite his body otherwise recovering. After waking, he jokingly pretends not to recognize Shen Xingshuo, inadvertently alarming him further; examinations find his physical indicators normal 113 114.
- The attack leads to tighter security for the children and intensified training by Shen Jin. Shen Yu returns home to extensive care—and the schoolwork his younger brothers refuse to let him escape 114 118 119.
Romance with Ji Cicen
- Their renewed friendship becomes strained over love letters Shen Yu has hidden. He visits Ji Cicen to apologize and later writes a teasing letter of his own that reveals his recollection of their childhood 106 109.
- Ji Cicen’s attention increasingly unsettles him. Shen Yu accepts his care and clasps his hand beneath their classroom desk, but remains uncertain about his own response 128 140 154.
- During a mountain trip, he rushes onto an apparently cracking glass walkway to pull Ji Cicen to safety. The cracks prove to be part of the attraction 150.
- He eventually recognizes that his feelings for Ji Cicen differ from his affection for his brothers. When Ji formally asks him to be his boyfriend, Shen Yu immediately agrees 172 184.
- At university, Shen Yu openly says he already has a partner. Ji Cicen returns early from overseas after seeing a viral campus post about him, and they reunite during military training. His brothers watch without opposing the relationship 187.
Adulthood and Public Standing
- Outsiders repeatedly assume that adoption makes Shen Yu less valued than the biological twins. His family’s public affection and protection contradict those expectations 132 160 180.
- At a banquet, Yuan Ming proposes a marriage alliance and offers to help him take over the Shen family. Shen Yu is bewildered that anyone would expect him to turn against his own family 180.
- On his coming-of-age birthday, he wishes for his parents’ health, his brothers’ success, and his friends’ happiness. The family later identifies that birthday as the last time they heard his thoughts 183.
