Background / History

Childhood in the Cheng Household

Shen Jin and his twin brother, Shen Jun, were adopted by Du Jingyi. Her health was severely depleted, and she died six or seven years before Shen Jin explained their history to Ye Qingwan. The brothers subsequently endured life under Cheng Yong, whose domestic violence repeatedly forced Shen Jun to shield his younger brother 7 67.

Shen Jin continued attending school, while Shen Jun dropped out and worked. Neighbors regarded Shen Jin as a frail, obedient, academically promising child, but his apparent harmlessness concealed considerable vigilance and an ability to manage their circumstances quietly 7 13 21 75. He was also bullied at school 55 76.

Reunion with the Shen Family

When he first encountered the Shen family, Shen Jin introduced himself as Cheng Jin. He heard Shen Yu’s thoughts about the family’s biological children and recognized that their interest in him was unusual. Despite presenting himself as a vulnerable child, he cooperated with Shen Xubai’s collection of hair for testing, concealed his route home, and secretly watched the family leave 6.

After entering the Shen home, Shen Jin privately questioned Shen Changgeng about the twins’ origins, Cheng Yong, and Shen Yu. His most important question was whether his birth family had continued looking for them. Shen Changgeng assured him that the search had never stopped and explained that Shen Yu had been adopted 13.

The family reclaimed the twins, and Cheng Yong was later imprisoned for domestic violence. During their formal welcome home, Shen Changgeng carried Shen Jin on his shoulders. Seeing the room and gifts Lin Yujing had prepared, Shen Jin called her “Mom,” moving her to tears 17 20 67.

Accepting Shen Yu

Shen Jin initially distrusted Shen Yu’s motives and resented how easily he drew Shen Jun’s attention. He maintained an innocent exterior while concealing jealousy, although Shen Yu’s straightforward behavior gradually undermined his suspicions 12 13 22.

A turning point came when Shen Yu intervened against school bullying and explained that he wanted to protect Shen Jin, even if he was not strong enough to guarantee success. Later, after Shen Yu confronted Zhao Hang on his behalf, Shen Jin called him “Brother” for the first time 53 54 59.

Shen Jun’s Treatment and Ye Qingwan

Shen Jun’s relapse left Shen Jin frightened and furious. He had already distrusted Han Rong, whom the family suspected after medication caused Shen Jun’s bones to become brittle. Shen Jin refused to leave the hospital without seeing his brother and later helped return him to bed during another frightening episode 61 65.

During the search for treatment, Shen Jin told Ye Qingwan that Du Jingyi had adopted the twins and had since died. Ye Qingwan acknowledged both boys as her younger brothers, and Shen Jin sincerely called her “Sis.” He subsequently helped expose Xiao Yuzhen’s aggression and attempts to belittle her 67 71 72.

When Shen Jun recovered enough to stand, Shen Jin cried against his shoulder. The family deliberately changed the subject to spare his pride 75.

Knife Attack and Aftermath

A woman attacked Shen Jin with a knife outside school. Shen Yu pushed him out of the way but fell backward, striking his head on the concrete and losing consciousness. Shen Jin rushed to him, lifted him into his arms, and cried for help while Shen Xubai and the security guards subdued the attacker 111 112.

Shen Jin blamed himself for Shen Yu’s injuries. During the recovery period, he trained intensely on weekends and remained alert enough to position himself between Shen Jun and possible danger. Once Shen Yu awoke, Shen Jin became more openly affectionate, repeatedly calling him “big brother,” peeling fruit for him, and taking responsibility for his missed schoolwork 112 114 115 118 119.

His guilt also prompted a difficult conversation with Shen Jun: he feared that his affection was merely repayment for being saved. Shen Jun reassured him that his ordinary, everyday care already showed that he regarded Shen Yu as family 119.

University Admission and Later Family Life

Shen Jin won awards in physics, chemistry, and biology competitions, received offers from several prestigious universities, and selected one rather than continuing to weigh the offers. He later visited A University as a recommended-admission student and shared his experiences after returning home during the family’s fifth year reunited 156 165 171.

As Shen Yu grew closer to Ji Cicen, Shen Jin became increasingly protective and openly displeased with Ji Cicen’s attempts to monopolize his attention. Nevertheless, he supported Shen Yu studying in A City so the family could look after him. At Shen Yu’s coming-of-age banquet, he also challenged Yuan Ming’s insulting behavior and held Yuan Ming’s family responsible for allowing it 161 163 179 181.

Appearance

Personality

Shen Jin is observant, guarded, and far more calculating than his childhood appearance suggests. He can deliberately adopt a frail, innocent manner while assessing other people’s intentions. Even Shen Changgeng initially underestimated how much of the twins’ situation Shen Jin quietly kept under control 6 12 13.

His childhood left him prone to hiding distress and expecting ulterior motives behind kindness. To avoid upsetting Shen Jun, he restrained his anger and presented himself as a kind, obedient younger brother. The narration later describes his avoidant tendencies and the insecurity beneath his cold exterior; receiving help can make him preoccupied with repayment rather than comfortable with affection 13 54 119.

His strongest loyalty is to his family. Shen Jun was originally his emotional anchor, but Shen Yu gradually became equally important to him. His concern usually appears through practical acts—buying drinks, supervising homework, carrying luggage, or checking that his brothers are safe—rather than easy declarations of love 54 75 115 133 153 156.

Shen Yu repeatedly breaks through his composure. Shen Jin admires his ability to regulate his emotions and enjoy life, yet becomes embarrassed by his praise and exasperated by his antics.
