Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Jōnin at twelve 20 Reached jōnin rank at twelve and accumulated extensive battlefield experience.
Transplanted left-eye Sharingan 30 Received Obito’s Sharingan during the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, after Obito was crushed beneath a boulder. The event is recounted retrospectively.

Background / History

Kakashi was recognized as a prodigious ninja and became a jōnin at twelve. During the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, his teammate Obito was crushed beneath a boulder. Obito gave Kakashi a Sharingan and entrusted Rin Nohara to him before falling underground. Kakashi subsequently failed to protect Rin, leaving him burdened by both losses 3 20 30.

Believing Obito dead, Kakashi avoided revisiting Kannabi Bridge whenever possible. His grief contributed to his decision to join the Anbu, where he numbed himself through continuous missions. A year before the investigation into Itachi’s death, he rescued the Wood Release user Tenzo from Root; Hiruzen then recruited Tenzo into the Anbu and assigned him to Kakashi’s team 7 20.

By the formation of the Special Operations Department, Kakashi was already an Anbu squad captain serving directly under Hiruzen. Torifu Akimichi accepted him into the new department and appointed him captain of Team One, alongside Uchiha Douyang, Shisui Uchiha, and Might Guy 18 19.

Appearance

  • Eyes: His exposed right eye is ordinary, while his left contains a transplanted Sharingan 7 8.
  • Habitual expression: Frequently described as having listless, “dead-fish” eyes and an exhausted demeanor 20 29 32.
  • Age relative to his team: Although the oldest member of Team One, he is still under twenty during its first major mission 21.

Personality

Kakashi’s outward lethargy conceals a decisive, battle-hardened temperament. He favors avoiding unnecessary disputes with other villages, but refuses to let Konoha’s ninja be intimidated. During investigations, he notices small inconsistencies and cautions Shisui against treating suspicion as proof 7 8 20.

His attachment to his comrades coexists with a dangerous willingness to sacrifice himself. He objects to leaving Douyang and Shisui unsupported against Moryo, yet later insists on personally attacking Kirigakure’s supply depot despite the risk of death. Shared missions gradually make the normally aloof Kakashi more cheerful, while his inability to help during recovery leaves him feeling guilty 24 29 38 44.

He also has a dry comic streak. When Douyang asks him for a captain’s gift, Kakashi solemnly presents an Icha Icha Paradise Collector’s Edition, describing the book as a painful sacrifice and a potentially valuable keepsake 19.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

Kakashi possesses a transplanted Sharingan in his left eye, received from Obito 7 30.

  • Observes the sinister chakra escaping from Moryo’s battle inside Demon-Sealing Mountain 26.
  • Its position allows him to challenge the apparent evidence against him in Itachi’s murder: the marked stone indicates a right-eye Sharingan 7.
  • The transplant places a substantial burden on his chakra reserves, contributing to his habitual exhaustion 29.

Chidori and Lightning Blade

Kakashi repeatedly uses Chidori as a high-speed piercing attack. Lightning Blade is separately described as an S-rank forbidden technique capable of cutting lightning and requiring no hand seals 19 21.

  • Shatters five or six terracotta soldiers in a single charge while opening a path to the Priestess Temple 21.
  • Pierces Ghost Army puppets while defending Demon-Sealing Mountain 26.
  • Kills the last Stone Ninja confronting him during the return-route ambush 31.
  • Uses a lightning-charged assault to reach and destroy Kirigakure’s supply depot 39.
  • Destroying the terracotta soldiers does not permanently disable them; their bodies reform 20.

Water Release: Water Formation Wall

Kakashi raises a wall of water to intercept the flames from an explosive ambush 30.

  • Reacts immediately when the hidden explosives detonate.
  • The collision produces dense steam that envelops the surrounding forest 30.

Summoning Technique

Kakashi summons Pakkun, a talking dog used for scent-based investigation 6.

  • Uses blood and the Summoning Technique to call Pakkun to Itachi’s death scene.
  • Assigns Pakkun and Yugao to follow the unfamiliar scent found there.
  • Their trail ends near Root’s headquarters, providing a major lead in the investigation 6 8.

Investigation and Command

  • Evidence analysis: Notices the eye-position detail on the blood-marked stone and connects the scent trail’s endpoint to Root using a village map 7 8.
  • Diplomacy: Negotiates a joint assault with Toroi and Juzo Biwa to reach the Priestess Temple 20 21.
  • Combat awareness: Tracks how many guards his teammates draw away before attacking Kirigakure’s depot 39.
  • Independent combat: Defeats a group of Stone Ninja, Mist Ninja, and wandering ninja during the journey home from the Land of Demons 31.

Equipment / Items

  • Kunai and ninja tool pouch — Carries standard tools; uses a kunai to finish an enemy during the return-route ambush 19 31.
  • Icha Icha Paradise Collector’s Edition — Gives his yellow-covered copy to Douyang. He had arranged for someone to buy it and hoped to obtain Jiraiya’s autograph 19.
  • Maps — Uses a Konoha map to identify Root’s location and detailed former Land of Whirlpools maps for the supply-depot operation 8 38.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Douyang — One of Douyang’s closest friends and later his captain. Douyang challenges Kakashi’s dangerous depot plan, then remains behind to save his life 1 19 38 39.
  • Might Guy — Team One comrade. Returns to the depot to help and carries the critically wounded Kakashi to safety 19 39 40.
  • Shisui Uchiha — Investigative partner and subordinate. Initially suspects Kakashi of killing Itachi, apologizes after Kakashi identifies the conflicting evidence, and later helps secure his rescue 7 8 39.
  • Uchiha Itachi — Former subordinate and friend whose abilities Kakashi knew well; Kakashi investigates his murder 5 7.
  • Obito — Former teammate and donor of his left Sharingan. Kakashi believes him dead and continues to mourn him, unaware that Obito is operating behind Kirigakure’s campaign 20 30 37 44.
  • Rin Nohara — Former teammate whose death remains a source of grief and guilt 30 37.
  • Tenzo — Rescued by Kakashi from Root and subsequently assigned to his Anbu team; Kakashi names him as an alibi witness during the murder investigation 7.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former direct superior who authorizes Kakashi’s investigation into Itachi’s death 5 18.
  • Torifu Akimichi — Appoints Kakashi captain of Team One and entrusts the squad with classified missions 19 37.
  • Shimura Danzō — Root leader investigated by Kakashi. Previously incited Kakashi to assassinate Hiruzen 8 10.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Investigation into Itachi’s Death

  • Hiruzen authorizes Kakashi and Shisui to investigate village jōnin activity over the preceding three days. Kakashi recruits Douyang and Yugao to assist 5 6.
  • A planted stone suggesting a killer with one Sharingan briefly makes Kakashi a suspect. He points out that the clue indicates the right eye, whereas his Sharingan is on the left 7.
  • Pakkun’s scent trail and Kakashi’s map analysis redirect suspicion toward Danzō and Root 8.
  • Kakashi helps search Root and presents two three-tomoe Sharingan recovered from Danzō’s office, which Douyang identifies as Itachi’s. The investigation follows fabricated evidence: Douyang, not Danzō, killed Itachi 2 7 9 10.

Land of Demons Mission

  • Leads Team One on an S-rank assignment to protect Priestess Miroku 19.
  • Accepts Douyang’s advice to avoid the Land of Rain, then coordinates with Cloud and Mist ninja to breach the Ghost Army surrounding the temple 20 21.
  • Guards Demon-Sealing Mountain’s entrance with Guy while Douyang and Shisui assist Miroku inside 24 26.
  • Survives the joint Mist–Stone ambush on the return journey without losing a teammate. After recuperating in the Land of Grass, the squad returns to Konoha and receives ten days’ leave 30 31 32.

Kirigakure Supply Campaign

  • Receives a secret mission to destroy an island supply depot in the former Land of Whirlpools. Before departing, visits the Memorial Stone for Obito and Rin 37.
  • Assigns his teammates to draw off defenders while he attacks the depot. Despite discovering that more than a hundred enemies remain, he completes the demolition 38 39.
  • Collapses from severe wounds, exhaustion, and blood loss. Douyang prevents his execution, while Guy carries him away and Shisui helps cover their escape 39 40 42.
  • Agrees to remain in the Land of Waves while the squad disrupts enemy logistics. Kakashi recuperates as his three teammates destroy eight supply units, delaying Kirigakure’s offensive and allowing Konoha to reinforce its defenses 43 44.
  • Returns to the Land of Fire after Kirigakure withdraws and offers peace talks 45.
