Background / History
Shisui earned his “Body Flicker” reputation during the late stages of the Third Shinobi World War. He was counted among Konoha’s three notable wartime prodigies alongside Minato Namikaze and Uchiha Douyang. On the eastern battlefield, at least a hundred Mist ninja died at his hands 1 18 41.
By the time of Itachi’s death, Shisui served directly under Hiruzen Sarutobi in the Anbu. He regarded his role as a bridge between the Uchiha and Konoha as an inherited responsibility, remaining committed to it even after his clan rejected him 4 5.
Appearance
- Youthful face: Described as boyish when he removes his Anbu mask during Fugaku’s confrontation with Hiruzen 4.
- Sharingan: Scarlet eyes bearing three tomoe when using his ordinary Sharingan 9.
- Mangekyō pattern: Resembles a four-bladed shuriken 25.
- Mission attire: Uses a mask and armor as part of his Special Operations Department equipment 19.
Personality
Shisui values both the Uchiha and the village, refusing to protect one by allowing the other to be harmed. His rejection by the clan leaves him trembling and distressed, but he does not retract his defense of Hiruzen or regret his decision. He also refuses to support Setsuna’s ambitions when they threaten the clan’s improving relationship with Konoha 4 5 35.
He is capable of composed analysis despite personal grief. After Itachi’s death, he distinguishes between accepting a shinobi’s death in battle and accepting an unexplained killing near the village. Hiruzen praises his judgment by comparing him to Kagami, although Shisui later shows political naivety by assuming that punishing Danzō alone will resolve the Uchiha’s grievances 5 11.
His concern for others extends beyond mission objectives. He attempts to save Miroku from Toroi even after Moryo has been sealed, and later prepares to risk one of his Mangekyō eyes to give Douyang a chance to escape. He takes pride in his talent, but Douyang’s overwhelming display of Shinra Tensei forces him to reconsider how much he understands his teammate’s strength 27 41.
Abilities & Skills
Body Flicker Technique
- Exceptional speed: His Body Flicker is described as unrivaled in the shinobi world, with probably no one reliably surpassing his speed after Minato’s death 9.
- Rapid infiltration: Appears inside Danzō’s office despite Root personnel attempting to stop him 9.
- Seven-image combat technique: Splits into seven apparent Shisuis, described as both solid bodies and phantoms, and attacks with them simultaneously 27 39.
- Further refinement: His Body Flicker becomes more refined after awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan 27.
- Endurance limit: Killing nearly fifty Mist ninja without using his Mangekyō still brings him to his physical limit 39.
Sharingan and Genjutsu
- Combat perception: His Three-Tomoe Sharingan makes the Ghost Army’s movements appear several times slower 21.
- Deceptive illusions: Places Danzō under a genjutsu that makes him believe he has successfully struck Shisui, while Shisui actually cuts away the bandages concealing Danzō’s transplanted eye 9.
- Resistance to control: Moryo’s attempt to control him through Soul Possession fails; the text attributes this to Shisui’s Mangekyō and formidable genjutsu capability 26.
Kotoamatsukami
- Will control: A Mangekyō genjutsu described as one of the most formidable in the shinobi world 26.
- Planned application: Prepares to forcibly control Ganryū so Douyang can escape the Mist encirclement 41.
- Severe exhaustion risk: Using it after two major battles could exact a steep price, potentially costing him one Mangekyō Sharingan 41.
- Not completed in the shown encounter: Douyang unleashes Shinra Tensei before Shisui casts the technique 41.
Susanoo
- Form: Produces an emerald-green giant with a skeletal frame, flesh, meridians, and armor. Its fully formed manifestation is described as Perfect Susanoo 25.
- Restraint: Uses its enormous arms to seize Moryo and hold it for the sealing operation 25.
- Defense: A partial ribcage manifestation protects him from Yan Luoya’s explosive-tag suicide attack, though he still requires treatment afterward 31.
- Susanoo: Tsukumo: Opens the giant’s breastplate to reveal a large tomoe that fires countless chakra arrows. Combined with Douyang’s attack, it inflicts heavy casualties on the Mist force besieging them 40.
- Limitations: Sustained use consumes substantial chakra and ocular power. Against Moryo, his eyes begin bleeding within ten minutes; prolonged combat can leave him temporarily unable to use his Mangekyō 26 27 40.
- Strength limit: Moryo is larger and physically stronger than his Susanoo, requiring Douyang’s support to suppress it 26.
Swordsmanship
- Close combat: Uses a ninja blade to shatter terracotta soldiers, although they subsequently regenerate 20.
- Uchiha Style: Sword Leap Flame: Envelops his short sword in flames before striking a Ghost Army soldier 21.
- Thrown interception: Attempts to intercept Toroi’s shuriken with his sword, but Toroi redirects them through Magnet Release 27.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Short sword / ninja blade — Carried on his back and used for combat, cutting Danzō’s bandages, and extracting evidence from the murder scene 7 9 21.
- Mask and armor — Equipped from the Special Operations Department warehouse before the Miroku protection mission 19.
- Ninja tool pouch — Used to carry Itachi’s bagged short sword during the murder investigation 6.
Relationships
- Uchiha Itachi — Close friend; Shisui serves as an older-brother figure and mentor in life. Their frequent spars give him detailed knowledge of Itachi’s abilities 5 7.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Hokage and direct superior. Shisui defends him against the clan’s accusations, but his trust deteriorates when evidence appears to implicate Danzō 4 8 9.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Clan leader who expels him for refusing to join the confrontation against Hiruzen. Fugaku later rejects his request for an audience 4 11.
- Uchiha Douyang — Investigation partner and teammate. They grow closer after fighting Moryo and sharing their ocular secrets; Douyang treats Shisui’s injuries, and Shisui later carries the exhausted Douyang to safety 28 31 41.
- Kakashi Hatake — Fellow investigator and later Team One captain. Shisui briefly suspects him during Itachi’s murder inquiry, then apologizes after further examination of the evidence 7 8 19.
- Might Guy — Team One comrade. They fight through Mist pursuers together and return to assist Kakashi when they realize Douyang has remained behind 19 39.
- Miroku — Protected priestess and ally. She promises to keep his and Douyang’s trump cards secret; their shared battle against Moryo brings the three closer 25 28.
- Shimura Danzō — Initially regarded with respect and apprehension, then treated as the chief suspect in Itachi’s death. Shisui escorts him to Hiruzen and exposes his transplanted Sharingan 8 9.
- Uchiha Setsuna — Hardline elder who hopes to recruit him for a coup. Shisui will not support a plan that threatens the clan and village’s hard-won stability 34 35.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Itachi’s Death and the Uchiha Crisis
When Fugaku leads the Uchiha to the Hokage Building, Shisui removes his mask and insists that Hiruzen did not order Itachi’s death. His refusal to cross over to Fugaku’s side undermines the clan leader’s confidence in an immediate confrontation, but costs Shisui his place in the clan 4.
Shisui then argues that the killing may have been intended to destroy the remaining trust between Konoha and the Uchiha. Granted broad investigative authority alongside Kakashi, he checks jonin activity records and helps examine the murder scene 5 6.
The investigation incorrectly implicates Danzō, although Douyang is the actual killer. Shisui exposes Danzō’s transplanted Sharingan and is assigned to help search Root. During reconciliation efforts, he recommends severe punishment for Danzō, but Fugaku refuses to receive him, leaving Douyang to approach the clan leader 2 8 9 11.
Miroku Protection Mission
Assigned to Team One under Kakashi, Shisui joins an S-rank mission to protect Priestess Miroku. At Demon-Sealing Mountain, he reveals his Susanoo, restrains Moryo, resists its attempt to control him, and then withdraws to guard Miroku as his ocular power deteriorates 19 24 25 26.
After the sealing, Toroi attempts to take Moryo’s body and attacks the weakened priestess. Douyang disables Toroi and neutralizes his shuriken, while Shisui kills the other three Cloud ninja. The group agrees to attribute the Kumogakure team’s deaths to Moryo 27 28.
Ambush on the Return Journey
A joint Kirigakure–Iwagakure force separates Team Kakashi in a forest ambush. Shisui survives Yan Luoya’s self-detonation using Susanoo’s ribs, and Douyang reaches him afterward to heal his injuries 30 31.
Kirigakure Supply-Raid Campaign
During Kirigakure’s invasion, Shisui helps divert defenders from an island supply depot so Kakashi can destroy it. After fighting off nearly fifty pursuers, he returns with Guy to assist their comrades. He and Douyang remain behind while Guy carries the critically injured Kakashi away 36 38 39.
Shisui uses Susanoo: Tsukumo against the surrounding Mist ninja, but exhausts his ocular power. When reinforcements arrive, he prepares a costly Kotoamatsukami attempt to save Douyang; Douyang instead clears the enemy with Shinra Tensei. Shisui recovers enough strength to carry him toward the Land of Waves 40 41.
After regrouping, Shisui participates in further supply attacks. He, Douyang, and Guy report destroying eight supply units between them, helping stall Kirigakure’s army. The team returns to the Land of Fire after the Mist withdrawal 42 44 45.
