Background / History
Connection to the Priestess Lineage
Moryo and the priestess lineage originated as parts of a single whole. The priestess represents its good side, while Moryo represents its evil side; their powers inherently sustain and counter one another. The lineage exists to seal him, and Moryo must kill the priestess to gain true freedom 22 25 29.
Earlier priestesses chose Demon-Sealing Mountain in the Land of Swamps as his prison because its lava pool suppresses his chakra. According to Miroku, sealing him whole would allow his corrosive chakra to erode the seal within seven or eight years. Separating and sealing his body and soul individually was necessary to prevent another resurrection 24.
Release and Pursuit
After the Yomi Cult released Moryo, Miroku appealed to the Five Great Nations for assistance. His Ghost Army devastated settlements in the Land of Demons and surrounded the Priestess Temple. Although the temple’s barrier restrained Moryo and his soldiers, it could not prevent the cult’s ninja from entering and attacking it 19 20 21.
Teams from Konoha, Kumogakure, and Sunagakure escorted Miroku toward Demon-Sealing Mountain while the remaining shinobi stayed behind as a diversion. Moryo pursued the escort, prompting the group to ambush him in a canyon. Pakura’s Scorch Release forced him down into Miroku’s sealing formation, trapping him behind a barrier that she expected to hold for at least three days 22 23 24.
Battle at Demon-Sealing Mountain
Moryo eventually entered the mountain and urged Miroku to merge with him, promising that their combined power would make the world submit. She stalled him while Uchiha Douyang and Shisui Uchiha waited in hiding, but Moryo detected their threatening presences before the ambush began 25.
Shisui restrained him with Susanoo while Douyang struck him with enormous black cubes summoned through Daikokuten. Moryo threw off the cubes and overpowered Susanoo in raw strength, forcing Douyang to suppress his chakra with Black Chakra Rods. His attempt to possess Shisui failed, and Douyang continued the suppression while Shisui withdrew to protect Miroku 25 26.
Once Miroku’s formation activated, sealing chains bound Moryo. She separated his dark-purple soul from his body and drew it into a black bottle, leaving his body sealed inside the mountain 27.
Attempted Capture and Aftermath
Toroi then attempted to seize Moryo for Kumogakure, intending to create a new jinchūriki. He had brought the Amber Purifying Pot to transport the demon safely. Douyang and Shisui stopped him, and Miroku retained custody of Moryo’s soul, planning to seal it at the shrine far from his body 27 28.
The survivors falsely attributed the deaths of Toroi and his three companions to Moryo to conceal the fighting between the allied shinobi. Moryo had already been sealed when Toroi confronted them 27 28.
Appearance
Moryo is a hill-sized, dark-purple monster with numerous dragon-like heads. Mist surrounds his body and obscures his complete outline 23.
- Eyes: Scarlet before Douyang pierced them with Black Chakra Rods 26.
- Build: Bulkier than Shisui’s Susanoo 26.
- Soul: A dark-purple phantom, visibly distinct from his physical body when separated by Miroku’s seal 27.
Personality
Moryo is openly domineering and contemptuous of humans, repeatedly dismissing powerful shinobi as “ants.” He seeks reunion with Miroku as a means of attaining overwhelming power and making the world submit, claiming that they were once gods who stood above everyone else 25 26.
His confidence falters when confronted with effective resistance. Susanoo’s appearance shocks him, the priestess’s sealing formation makes him uneasy, and his final resistance gives way to desperate pleas as his soul is drawn into the bottle 25 26 27.
Abilities & Skills
Chakra Reserves and Empowerment
Moryo possesses vast reserves of evil, dark, highly corrosive chakra, sufficient to sustain hundreds of terracotta puppets 21 24.
- Power assessment: Douyang estimates his strength to lie between the Four-Tails and Five-Tails; Kakashi later describes him as comparable to an ordinary tailed beast. These are comparisons, not a formal rank or identification as a tailed beast 22 32.
- Empowering followers: The Yomi Cult’s ninja gain a substantial increase in strength from his chakra 22.
- Eroding seals: His chakra can eventually overcome a seal containing his body and soul together 24.
Ghost Army
Moryo controls an army of terracotta soldiers that emerges from underground whenever he revives 20.
- Self-repair: Destroyed heads and severed bodies reform, allowing soldiers to recover from both weapon strikes and ninjutsu 20 21.
- Scale: Douyang estimates at least five hundred soldiers around the temple during the allied breakthrough 21.
- Limits: Their movements are clumsy, and repeated destruction depletes their chakra, progressively slowing their repairs 20 21.
Mental Control
Moryo can influence minds through his roars and the Dark Secret Technique: Soul Possession 23 26.
- Roars: Disturb nearby opponents’ minds; Miroku warns that approaching too closely risks being turned into a puppet 23.
- Soul Possession: Reduces victims to obedient servants. The Yomi Cult’s fanatics were influenced by this technique 26.
- Limit: His attempt to control Shisui fails. The technique is identified as a form of mental interference, or genjutsu, ineffective against Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan and exceptional genjutsu ability 26.
Physical Strength and Mobility
Moryo combines enormous size with enough speed to pursue an escort of experienced shinobi 23.
- Speed: Moves at a pace comparable to an ordinary elite jōnin 23.
- Strength: Throws off Douyang’s black cubes and gains the advantage over Susanoo in direct grappling 26.
- Destructive force: His struggle with Susanoo brings the mountain cavern close to collapse 26.
- Limit: His size makes it difficult to dislodge Douyang once the latter climbs onto his body and uses Sukunahikona to evade retaliation 26.
Vulnerabilities and Sealing Conditions
- Priestess power: Specifically counters Moryo. Miroku’s effectiveness against him does not establish that she could seal a tailed beast of equivalent strength 29.
- Lava: The pool inside Demon-Sealing Mountain suppresses his chakra 24.
- Black Chakra Rods: Disrupt and suppress his chakra, substantially weakening his resistance 26 27.
- Separate confinement: Miroku identifies separating his body and soul as the means of preventing resurrection; his soulless body cannot cause trouble on its own 24 28.
Relationships
- Miroku — Priestess and opposing half of their original whole. He seeks to merge with her; her inherited power directly counters him 25 29.
- Yomi Cult — Followers who release him, receive his chakra, and fall under his mental influence 21 22 26.
- Uchiha Douyang — Principal opponent during the final sealing; exploits chakra suppression and size-changing techniques to keep Moryo restrained 26 27.
- Shisui Uchiha — Opponent whose Susanoo restrains him and whose resistance defeats his possession attempt 25 26.
- Toroi — Would-be captor who plans to turn Moryo into a military asset for Kumogakure 27 28.
