Background / History
Childhood and the Kurta Clan Massacre
Kurapika and Pairo once rescued Sheila near the Kurta Clan’s secluded village. Sheila’s Adventurer’s Book encouraged Kurapika’s interest in the outside world, while her claim that outside doctors could treat Pairo’s eyes gave him another reason to leave 103.
A year after Sheila departed, Kurapika passed the elder’s test and earned permission to leave the village. During the test, outsiders saw his Scarlet Eyes; Pairo secretly switched a potion to help him pass despite that loss of control. Within six weeks of Kurapika’s departure, the Phantom Troupe massacred the clan 104.
The massacre occurred five years before Kurapika’s confrontation with Machi. The Troupe took the victims’ Scarlet Eyes, and Kurapika devoted himself to avenging his people and recovering their remains for burial 12 103.
Alliance with Qiao Lun
Kurapika meets Qiao Lun while working as a Nostrade Family bodyguard. Learning that the auction attackers belong to the Phantom Troupe immediately agitates him. Although he initially rejects Qiao Lun’s proposed ambush, he later agrees to join a confrontation outside the city 6 7.
While Qiao Lun fights Uvogin, Kurapika keeps Machi occupied and questions her about the massacre. Her explanation—that Chrollo wanted the Kurta Clan’s eyes—intensifies his anger. Kurapika subsequently catches her wrist with Chain Jail, but she escapes by severing her arm 9 11 13.
After Qiao Lun kills Uvogin and Machi, Kurapika formally proposes continuing their cooperation. He later supplies Qiao Lun with money and identification, thanking him for both his trust and his help in obtaining revenge 14 15 20 27.
Yorknew Auction Conflict
Kurapika brings Qiao Lun to a meeting with Hisoka, who offers information about the Troupe in exchange for help arranging a fight with Chrollo. Kurapika remains wary of him and asks whether he knows where the stolen Scarlet Eyes have gone 17.
During the Semetary Building battle, Kurapika and Qiao Lun intercept Shalnark and Pakunoda. Kortopi initially prevents Pakunoda’s capture, but Kurapika catches her with a chain during their retreat and drags her away behind Great Serpent 36 38 39.
Kurapika interrogates Pakunoda after the battle. She is later killed by Squala, not Kurapika, who delivers her body to Qiao Lun and identifies the killer. He also attempts to recover Scarlet Eyes sold at the auction, though Qiao Lun and Killua recognize the auctioned items as Kortopi’s counterfeits 42 43.
Building an Independent Organization
Qiao Lun encourages Kurapika to exploit the power vacuum left by the Ten Dons’ deaths. Their contract provides Kurapika with five billion Jenny and Qiao Lun’s combat support in exchange for a share of future profits and access to intelligence and resources 44.
After paying compensation, Kurapika leaves the Nostrade bodyguard team with Melody and Feitan. He eventually takes control of Zenji’s mafia organization while leaving Zenji as its public leader. Most of its profits go to Kurapika, with annual dividends owed to Qiao Lun 46 74.
Greed Island and the Troupe’s Counterattack
Kurapika monitors the Phantom Troupe while Qiao Lun is inside Greed Island. The Troupe sends hired ability users against him rather than exposing its own members, and he emerges unharmed. He also recognizes an attempt to use a stolen pair of Scarlet Eyes as bait 50 64 89.
When the conflict reaches Battera’s Castle, Kurapika enters the game to warn Gon and Killua, investigate Chrollo’s status, and relay information to Qiao Lun. He later requests a place on the expedition to Meteor City so he can recover the eyes taken from Yorknew 78 87 88 89.
Meteor City
Kurapika travels to Meteor City with Qiao Lun, Gon, Killua, and Biscuit using [Accompany]. During the battle, Chrollo detects one concealed chain, while Shizuku’s Blinky pulls another off course. With Killua’s assistance, Kurapika eventually binds Chrollo with Chain Jail and seals his Nen 95 96 102.
Chrollo’s ultimate fate is not established: Qiao Lun does not see how Kurapika deals with him, and they later discuss checking whether he is still alive. Kurapika arranges for Shizuku, who joined the Troupe after the massacre, to be transferred through a Blacklist Hunter to a V5 prison for Nen users in the Minbo Republic 103 107.
Sheila’s Return and the Kakin Lead
Sheila’s appearance in Meteor City forces Kurapika to confront how his village was discovered. She admits that her records gave the Troupe an opportunity to locate it. Kurapika instead turns much of the blame inward, wondering whether exposing his Scarlet Eyes during the elder’s test caused the disaster; both Sheila and Qiao Lun reject that conclusion 103 104.
Sheila names Tserriednich, Kakin’s Fourth Prince, as the recipient of Chrollo’s stolen eyes and the largest buyer of Scarlet Eyes. She then reveals that Pairo is dead and that his head was traded away. Kurapika briefly hopes Pairo survived before hearing the clarification 105 106.
After Sheila declares that he should not have attacked Chrollo, Kurapika abandons his remaining trust in her and restrains her with his chains. He subsequently begins preparing for Kakin rather than departing immediately 106 107.
By Qiao Lun’s later visit to Yorknew, Kurapika has confirmed that the last Scarlet Eyes he needs are held by the Fourth Prince. He shares his intelligence on Kakin’s princes, agrees to care for Komugi and Meruem, and employs Ikalgo while preparing his own departure 171.
Appearance
- Build and features: A handsome young man with short, pale blond hair and a solemn expression 6.
- Scarlet Eyes: His eyes turn a striking blood red during intense emotional fluctuations 12.
- Distinctive weapon: His conjured chains extend from the fingers of one hand 12.
Personality
Kurapika combines intense anger toward the Phantom Troupe with patience in combat. Against Machi, he studies her techniques, conceals his decisive chain underground, and waits for an opening rather than revealing his full ability immediately 9 12 13.
He is protective of his friends and reluctant to involve them in his revenge. Gon and Killua’s capture frightens him enough to provoke an angry reprimand, but he softens when Gon explains his outrage at the Troupe’s hypocrisy 27 28.
He values trust and reciprocity. His gratitude toward Qiao Lun develops into a formal partnership, though he initially dislikes feeling that he contributes too little to their campaign. He later accepts that Qiao Lun’s involvement has transformed his personal vendetta into a broader conflict 20 44 51 89.
Recovering his people’s eyes becomes his strongest remaining motivation after the Meteor City battle. Each recovery adds to his emotional burden, and his reunion with Sheila exposes profound survivor’s guilt. Nevertheless, he composes himself and continues investigating rather than abandoning his goal 95 103 104 105.
Abilities & Skills
Chain Conjuration

- Binding Machi’s wrist suppresses aura at the points of contact 13.
- Fully restraining Chrollo seals his Nen and ends his ability to continue the battle 102.

- Hisoka’s false Troupe membership creates a potential lethal trap; Qiao Lun warns Kurapika before he uses the ability against him 36.
