Background / History
Orphanage Years
Winnie and Vanessa grew up together in an orphanage, where Winnie protected Vanessa from bullying. Winnie left the orphanage first and dropped out after six months of schooling to earn a living, but continued helping Vanessa pursue her education. The two dreamed that learning would lead to a respectable life, and celebrated together when Vanessa gained admission to Miskatonic University 6 16 17 29.
During one particularly difficult winter, Winnie cut off her long hair and sold it for enough hard bread to keep them both alive. She also carried Vanessa on her back whenever her friend was hurt 49.
Reunion with Vanessa
Working at a bakery, Winnie recognized Vanessa after her friend had fallen into poverty and hospital debt. She gently questioned why Vanessa had not sought her help and gave her a bag of honey-bread trimmings and crusts—the bakery’s most expensive bread, despite the scraps’ unpresentable appearance 6.
The friends resumed seeing one another around their opposing work schedules. Vanessa brought roasted potatoes, while Winnie supplied more bread. Winnie later gave her a pot of bellflowers, explaining that flowers would make her new lodging feel better 16 17.
Relationship with Allen
Vanessa discovered Winnie waiting in Wild Dog Gang territory after work, carefully dressed and wearing makeup. Winnie explained that she was meeting someone and wanted a person who could look out for her. When Vanessa objected to her involvement with a gang member, Winnie answered that she simply wanted to survive 16.
Her partner was Allen, a Wild Dog Gang member whom Vanessa had previously encountered. Winnie defended his prospects and sharply rebuked him when he called Vanessa a lunatic. She regularly waited for him in the Harbor District so they could go home together 17 49.
Caring for Orphans
Vanessa later encountered Winnie resting at Dorothea’s home. Dorothea warned her against exhausting herself and suggested letting Allen or the gang help. Fresh bandages around Winnie’s left wrist led Vanessa to suspect a connection to flesh-and-blood rituals, though the cause of the wound was not established 28 29.
A visit to Winnie’s apartment revealed that she rented several rooms and cared for numerous children from an orphanage. Vanessa had known nothing about these responsibilities. Winnie was subsequently reported to be searching for a larger home because the children had outgrown the apartment 40 41.
Winnie brought the children to the Mourning Poetry Society after learning that it offered free sacred meals. Their attendance prompted the society to obtain a larger cooking pot. Even when she could not attend herself, she sent the children to eat there 41 42.
After learning more about Winnie’s circumstances, Vanessa left her a note offering support. She later chose a five-Leo Enamel-Inlaid White Lily brooch with Alice’s help, intending to apologize to Winnie and Allen. Vanessa was still carrying the gift when she found Winnie’s body 40 43 47.
Death and Recovery
During the Mad Rat Disease crisis, Dorothea told Vanessa that Winnie had died. She later clarified that Winnie had been caught in the Harbor District when corpses poured out of the East District, and that a hospital corpse cart had taken her body toward the East District 44 46.
Vanessa recognized Winnie among the bodies on a hospital carriage. Her death and the collection crew’s treatment of the wounded preceded Vanessa’s attack on the armed guards and the killing of the hospital’s deputy administrative head 46 47 48.
Winnie’s body bore a severe chest wound, and her face remained fixed in terror. Vanessa cleaned away her makeup and blood, closed her eyes, and—with Dorothea’s help—tied her body to her back. Saying it was now her turn to carry Winnie, Vanessa took her away through the ruined district 49.
Appearance
- Hair: Long, golden, and smooth as satin. At work, she wears it in an elegant bun beneath a small hat; outside work, she sometimes lets it fall over her shoulders 6 16 49.
- Work clothing: A clean pale-blue dress with a cream-yellow apron 6.
- Makeup: Often touches it up before leaving work to meet Allen. Vanessa considers her naturally pretty and particularly radiant when made up 16.
- Injury: Her left wrist is freshly wrapped in gauze when Vanessa sees her at Dorothea’s home 28.
Personality
Winnie is affectionate and protective toward Vanessa, frequently straightening her hair or patting her head. She shares food, supports her education, and defends her against Allen’s frightened insult. Her kindness also extends to the orphaned children she takes in despite her own limited means 6 17 28 40 41.
She combines practical concerns about survival with small pleasures. She seeks security through her relationship with Allen, yet retains a playful sense of humor and a longstanding love of flowers. Even during hardship at the orphanage, she carefully tended plants on the windowsill 16 17 43.
