Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
First Rank 176 230 Elliot selects Burial and Vitality, producing the Resurrection talent. The advancement restores her missing limbs and scarred skin; Vanessa later distinguishes this bodily repair as Restoration, rather than Resurrection itself.
Nightmare Form acquired; still Low Rank 357 358 451 Her resurrection consumes power from Lords of Dreams, granting an immensely powerful but exhausting form. It later allows her to defeat a Middle-Rank cultist despite remaining Low Rank.
Second Rank 657 Two points in Honey advance her to Second Rank. Elliot selects Honey Resurrection, greatly shortening revival time and relocating resurrection to honey. She also gains the rank-based ability to stabilize dreams with Spirituality.
Third Rank 657 Further investment in Honey advances her again. Elliot chooses Honey Fruit, allowing her to produce honey in the Present World. Third Rank also permits gradual absorption of Dream Power during Dream Entry.
Fourth Rank / Motherly Ascension 657 659 718 Her requirement to devour a Supernatural person on a similar Path is already fulfilled, with recorded progress of 75/1. Elliot selects the motherly Ascension direction, but the Worms interrupt before her new talent can be chosen.
Fourth-Rank talent: Amber 718 719 Elliot resumes her interrupted advancement and selects Amber, which completely solidifies a target inside a durable seal.
Fifth Rank 776 A sacrifice using a few pieces of ore completes her nearly filled advancement progress. She gains the ability to use Dream Power to resist dream erosion.
Fifth-Rank talent: Honey Moon 777 Elliot selects Honey Moon, identified by Analysis as corresponding to Blood Lord. Elsa gains the ability to summon the Blood Moon.
Honey Transformation completed 888 A later transformation—not an explicitly documented rank increase—connects her corpses into a vast sensory network. She can control them as parts of herself, and honey flows from her wounds.

Background / History

Childhood and abandonment

The Genesis School abducted Elsa as a child. She subsequently remained extremely short and physically childlike, apparently having stopped developing at the age of her abduction. By the time Dorothea found her, Elsa had lost all four limbs and had extensive raised scars that obscured her original features 163 176 177.

Her father was cheated, accumulated debts, and sold their Canal District home. Elsa remembered a period when their reduced circumstances still allowed them to sit together and watch the courtyard flowers. Eventually, he became increasingly erratic, left home shouting about medicine that was his “only hope,” and never returned 163 790.

Unable to care for herself, Elsa survived on the remaining rice, rainwater leaking through the ceiling, and occasional food from debt collectors. Some collectors struck her; others were frightened by her appearance. Near starvation, she climbed onto a chair to see the garden, expecting to die. Clara later became her companion and shared stolen fish with her 163 229.

Recovery and the Family Annihilation Case

Elsa accepted advancement into the Supernatural because she wanted to protect those around her. Dorothea initially feared the risks but ultimately supported her decision. Elsa’s First-Rank advancement restored her limbs and skin, although she needed time to relearn how to move 176.

While investigating Fango’s death, Elsa used Burial on his blood and encountered overwhelming madness. Later, after sensing another will trying to control her, she knocked Clara unconscious and killed herself with a revolver. Elliot began restoring her Spirit Body in the Dream World while separately operating her corpse 202 206 209 247.

Her resurrection produced a new living body without removing the old one. The sight of two Elsas confused Dorothea, while Clara insisted that Elsa’s identity did not depend on her body. Elsa recognized the bullet wound in the animated corpse and learned that Resurrection did not require reuse of her original remains 229 230.

The Ruins and the Hearthfire battle

Elsa used Burial on her own corpse to recover memories connected to [It], including worship in a stone chamber beneath a crescent-moon carving. She later volunteered to lead the expedition into the Ruins. When [It] possessed her again, she turned a pistol on herself rather than endanger her companions 256 280 284.

Elliot subsequently controlled her abandoned corpse and discovered that the Ruins had returned to their earlier condition, while the corpse itself had not reset. Elsa’s next resurrection was completed elsewhere through supernatural materials supplied in the Dream 290 291 301.

During the defense of the Hearthfire District, Elsa carried explosives into a mass of monsters despite suffering severe injuries. She died in the explosion. Her subsequent resurrection stalled amid instability in the Dream World, but consuming the power of Lords of Dreams ultimately restored her and granted her Nightmare Form 318 349 357 358.

Becoming an active Cult Leader

Initially chosen as a public figurehead because resurrection visibly demonstrated the group’s power, Elsa gradually assumed genuine administrative responsibility. After returning from the battle, she found that the Canteen had become the Communion and gained several thousand Believers 213 359 360.

Her youthful appearance prompted doubts, but she earned trust by completing even minor assignments conscientiously and learning quickly. She also organized a supernatural combat squad with Maeve, Simon, and Flora, intended in part to handle Believers who lost control 360 361.

During operations against the Genesis School, Elsa supported Maeve, killed a Middle-Rank cultist, and helped rescue captive children. She fed the injured children pieces of Maeve’s healing flesh before carrying them out and returning to the fight 427 451.

Moonheart and repeated resurrection

Elsa’s Spirit Body descended beneath the Sea of the Moon, consuming material as it passed through the seabed until it reached Moonheart’s honey-filled depths. After resurrection gave her a physical body, she could no longer simply pass back through the surrounding rock 573 584 586 654.

Burial exposed her to memories that repeatedly drove her mad, while Honey restored her sanity and prevented escape through unconsciousness. Elliot advanced her along the Honey Path in an attempt to help. After her Motherly Ascension, unseen Worms repeatedly killed her despite Elliot’s efforts to protect her 648 654 657 659 675.

Elsa eventually discovered that she could resurrect inside her own corpses, suggesting a way to travel between distant bodies. Even after leaving Moonheart, she remained traumatized by the Worms. Facing them again with Elliot—and finding that they no longer attacked her—helped her stop reliving those deaths as an inevitable future 696 707 787 788.

Later leadership and transformation

Elsa continued representing the Communion publicly, including approaching Holly on her Lord’s behalf. She also developed the Holy Communion Plate to support excavation for a planned shipyard 809 835.

When Dorothea and others were preserved in Amber at the instant of death, Elsa helped pursue a way to heal them before release. Later, inspired by Vanessa’s decision to act rather than wait, she faced danger alongside her. As conflict with the Sacred Blood Nobles became imminent, Elsa began mobilizing the Hearthfire District and shifting its factories toward wartime production 851 859 860 862.

Her prolonged Honey Transformation eventually finished. Elsa awakened through one of her stored corpses and demonstrated that the bodies now belonged to a shared network under her control 888.

Appearance

  • White hair and pure-white eyes: Her eyes are compared to the first snow of winter 163.
  • Very short, childlike build: Although only a few years younger than Dorothea, she looks like a small child; this is associated with her childhood abduction by the Genesis School 177.
  • Former injuries: Before advancement, she lacked all four limbs and had thick scar tissue obscuring her face. These injuries were repaired at First Rank 163 176.
  • Nightmare Form: She can manifest parts of a large, tendrilled form resembling a Nightmare or Lord of Dreams 358 451.
  • After Honey Transformation: A cut to her arm releases honey that causes the surrounding ground to bloom with plants 888.

Personality

Elsa is gentle, patient, and affectionate, often comforting others despite her own suffering. Dorothea finds reassurance in her embraces, and Elsa accepts her sister’s fusion with Sia by emphasizing that surviving matters more than retaining an unchanged body 176 229 359.

Her protectiveness is practical rather than merely sentimental. She accepts dangerous work, sacrifices herself to prevent possession from harming her companions, and carries explosives into battle. Dorothea eventually recognizes that treating Elsa only as a child in need of protection overlooks her courage and reliability 176 284 288 318.

As an administrator, Elsa is conscientious and willing to learn. She does not dismiss small tasks, conceal uncertainty behind empty promises, or demand immediate recognition. She is also considerate of Vanessa’s position as the true Cult Leader, worrying that being addressed by that title might hurt her 360 755.

Resurrection does not make Elsa indifferent to death. Moonheart pushes her into despair, and later encounters with the Worms trigger memories of repeated killing. Her recovery consists of facing those fears, not becoming incapable of feeling them 654 676 787 788.

Abilities & Skills

Burial

A power associated with the dead that develops from sensing lingering obsessions into recovering fragments of memories 202 256 647.

  • Can obtain impressions through traces such as dried blood 202.
  • Can examine her own corpse, recovering information her living self does not otherwise recall 256.
  • Later describes gaining memories by tasting corpses 647.
  • Dangerous impressions can overwhelm her: Fango’s madness makes her faint, while the memories encountered in Moonheart repeatedly drive her insane 202 648.

Resurrection

A talent formed from Burial and Vitality that allows Elsa to return after death 230.

  • Elsa initially estimates a revival time of about a month and states that there is no limit to the number of revivals 177.
  • Supernatural materials accelerate restoration of her Spirit Body; Elliot once estimates that sufficient materials could reduce the remaining process to two or three days 209.
  • Revival can create a new body while leaving the old corpse intact 229 230.
  • Does not require returning beside the abandoned corpse 301.
  • Dream instability can interfere with the process 349.

Nightmare Form

A powerful form acquired after her resurrection consumed power from Lords of Dreams 357 358.

  • Produces controllable tendrils capable of smashing a large pit into the ground 358.
  • Grants enough combat power to overcome Middle-Rank opponents while Elsa herself is still Low Rank 451.
  • Consumes energy rapidly, causing dizziness and weakness after even brief use 358.
  • Overexertion brings severe hunger and impaired clarity; consuming Maeve’s flesh helps replenish her 402 451.
  • Elsa can manifest only part of the form. Vanessa suspects a connection to true Nightmares, but its long-term implications remain uncertain 451.

Honey Resurrection

An enhancement that incorporates Honey into Resurrection 657.

  • Greatly reduces revival time and changes the resurrection location to within honey 657.
  • Can revive Elsa inside Honey swallowed by Maeve 696.
  • Allows resurrection within Elsa’s own corpses; the tested corpse bursts as a new vessel forms 696.
  • Elsa proposes using corpses placed elsewhere as destinations for travel 696.

Honey Fruit and Motherly Ascension

Honey Fruit produces honey that can exist in the Present World. Motherly Ascension adds a comforting warmth to its effects 657 696.

  • Her honey helps Maeve regain Rationality and counter the influence of Primordial Blood 696 785.
  • Can be supplied as healing support during missions, including for Dorothea’s crows 789.
  • Attracts those associated with the Blood Path; uncontrolled leakage can provoke an almost irresistible urge to devour her 657 719.
  • Following Moonheart, her perception becomes sharp enough to sense Worms that Elliot cannot detect 718 787.

Amber

A Fourth-Rank talent that covers a target with Spirituality and completely solidifies it within amber 718 719.

  • Can be dissolved by Elsa to release the target 719.
  • Withstands Allen’s full-strength Folding Knife strike without a scratch; this establishes its durability, not confirmed universal indestructibility 719.
  • Appears to suspend the target’s experience: a released cat continues its interrupted movement without apparent awareness of the sealed interval 719.
  • Takes time to spread over a body. Flora notes that a decisive target might escape by severing the initially captured limb 720.
  • Prevents outside healing from reaching the sealed person. Someone preserved at the instant of death dies immediately upon release unless another solution is found 851.

Honey Moon

A Fifth-Rank talent identified by Analysis as corresponding to Blood Lord 777.

  • Allows Elsa to summon the Blood Moon 777.
  • Her initial test cannot change the sky because the Blood Moon is already present; she cannot dismiss it 777.
  • Simon recognizes its potential to disrupt lunar-dependent Formless Arts and rituals, though that application is not demonstrated in the passage 777.

Honey Transformation and Corpse Network

A prolonged later transformation links Elsa, Honey, and her accumulated corpses 719 888.

  • After completion, Elsa can sense and control the corpses as parts of herself and shift control between them 888.
  • Describes the connection as a vast web and feels that all the corpses are her original body 888.
  • Her wounded body releases honey that stimulates immediate plant growth 888.
  • During the transformation, stored corpses become unusable as sacrifices and contaminate the Canteen’s water source with sweetness 888.
  • This later process is distinct from the Honey Transformation talent offered at Third Rank: Elliot chose Honey Fruit at that advancement instead 657 888.

Administration and Mechanical Invention

Elsa develops from a nominal leader into an active organizer of the Communion 360.

  • Handles routine administration and helps stabilize an organization that has expanded to several thousand Believers 360.
  • Establishes a supernatural combat team and plans to recruit suitable Believers 361.
  • Awakens mechanical talent and designs the Holy Communion Plate 835.
  • Directs district-wide mobilization and industrial preparation for war 862.

Corpse Vessels and Borrowed Powers

Elsa’s preserved corpses serve as equipment and Vessels for other characters 290 731.

  • Elliot can equip a corpse Card and act through the body 290.
  • While controlling a corpse, Elliot can use his own skills through it, including Spirit Vision. Such use should not be confused with Elsa independently possessing those skills 290.
  • Elsa creates several Vessels after the group learns the necessary ritual, including one from her own body 731.
  • A controlled corpse Vessel can operate the Difference Engine 731.
  • Vanessa also uses an Elsa Vessel through Compliance 791.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Holy Communion Plate — A thick steel plate several meters across, engraved with a sacrificial ritual. Elsa’s blood fills its grooves, allowing it to sacrifice masses of dirt while being moved rather than requiring a stationary ritual site. Elliot recognizes its value for shipyard excavation 835.
  • Bronze Angel 1198 — The pistol Elsa uses to kill herself after resisting [It] in the Ruins. It originally enters the expedition with Simon 284 291.
  • Explosives — Carried into the monsters during the Hearthfire District battle, killing Elsa in the resulting detonation 318.
  • Corpse Cards and Vessels — Bodies left by repeated resurrection, used for Elliot’s remote operations and later incorporated into Elsa’s own shared network 657 731 888.

Relationships

  • Dorothea — Older sister. Dorothea initially seeks to protect and restore Elsa, but gradually acknowledges her independence and courage. Elsa comforts her after her fusion with Sia and later works urgently to save her from Amber 176 288 359 851.
  • Clara — Close friend who shared food with Elsa during her disability. Clara stays beside her corpse after her first documented death and firmly defends her identity when a new body appears 206 229.
  • Elliot / the Lord — Patron responsible for selecting her advancements, supplying resurrection materials, and controlling her corpses. He remains with her through Moonheart’s repeated deaths and helps her confront the Worms afterward 176 209 675 676 787.
  • Vanessa — The Communion’s true Cult Leader, while Elsa serves as its public face. Their cooperation develops into mutual understanding; Vanessa’s willingness to act inspires Elsa to face danger more decisively 699 755 859 860 862.
  • Maeve — Recruited by Elsa into paid work and lodging at the Canteen for protection. They become combat partners whose powers sustain one another: Maeve replenishes Elsa, while Elsa’s honey helps Maeve retain control 257 402 696 785.
  • Allen — Fellow Communion organizer and combat companion. He is deeply affected by Elsa’s battlefield sacrifice and later volunteers to test Amber on himself 318 360 720.
  • Simon — Fellow combat-team member and investigative partner. His mobility and searching abilities complement Elsa’s resurrection, healing, and combat roles 361 789.
  • Flora — Fellow combat-team member who helps test Amber, proposing a cat as the first subject rather than risking a person immediately 361 719.
  • Her father — Disappeared while seeking medicine for her. Later evidence of supernatural pills leaves Elsa uncertain whether he had actually found a treatment 163 420.
