History
Assistant-Supervisor Simulation
Geto first meets Li Shunchen when Li joins Tokyo Jujutsu High as a trainee assistant supervisor. After Satoru Gojo throws mission paperwork at the newcomer, Geto apologizes and helps collect the scattered sheets. Although courteous, his manner remains distant 6.
Following the failed Star Plasma Vessel mission and Riko Amanai’s death, Geto becomes increasingly withdrawn. Li notices him repeatedly writing “monkeys” in mission reports and visiting the bathhouse as though trying to wash away the smell of cursed spirits and non-sorcerers. Yu Haibara’s subsequent death further undermines his belief that sorcerers should protect ordinary people 7.
During a remote-village investigation, Geto discovers two girls with sorcerer potential imprisoned and abused by villagers. He also finds Li being beaten for trying to protect them. Geto massacres the villagers, frees the girls, and declares his intention to create a world inhabited only by sorcerers 8.
Despite thanking Li for his service, Geto turns against him as a representative of the old system. His cursed spirits destroy Li’s heart, ending the simulation 8 9.
Li Shunchen’s Enrollment and First Student Simulation
Outside that simulation, Geto meets Li as a new classmate. He notices Li briefly reproducing Masamichi Yaga’s cursed-energy wavelength and expresses curiosity about his technique 12 13.
In the next simulation, Geto introduces Cursed Spirit Manipulation and reveals that he already possesses several hundred spirits. He and Gojo initially dominate missions so completely that Li has little opportunity to contribute. As Li improves, Geto agrees to let him analyze captured spirits before absorbing them 14 15 17.
Geto and Gojo are assigned to protect Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel, with Li providing support. Geto comes to defend Riko’s wish to spend time with her friends before assimilation and reassures Misato Kuroi that she is Riko’s family. After Kuroi is kidnapped, he accepts responsibility for leaving her unprotected 19 20 24 25.
This simulation ends when Toji Fushiguro kills Li upon their return to Jujutsu High, leaving Li unable to witness the remainder of the mission 26.
Recognition of Phantom Parade
After returning from the simulation, Li demonstrates an imitation of Gojo’s Blue and describes the revolting taste associated with absorbing cursed spirits. The latter shocks Geto because he has never disclosed that experience to Gojo, Shoko, or Yaga 27 28.
When Li cuts Yaga’s palm to demonstrate healing, Geto intervenes before Gojo can attack him. After witnessing Li use Reverse Cursed Technique, Geto acknowledges that their new classmate no longer needs to be treated as someone requiring constant protection 28.
Later Student Simulation
Star Plasma Vessel Mission
In a later simulation, Geto increasingly recognizes Li’s practical combat ability. He praises Wukong’s tactics, appreciates Li’s defeat of a spatial-technique cursed spirit, and genuinely seeks his opinion during another argument with Gojo about sorcerers’ responsibilities 33 35 36.
The Star Plasma Vessel mission nevertheless ends in disaster. Toji kills Riko and leaves Geto severely wounded among the remains of his cursed spirits. Geto admits that Riko had chosen to return with them and blames himself for failing to protect her. Li provides emergency treatment, with Shoko completing his care afterward 41 42.
After Gojo kills Toji, Geto dissuades him from slaughtering the Time Vessel Association’s followers. He argues that killing uninformed, manipulated people would neither punish the true organizers nor undo Riko’s death. His insistence that power must have a meaningful purpose also serves as an attempt to preserve his own collapsing convictions 42.
Ideological Breakdown
As Gojo becomes capable of completing dangerous missions alone, Geto works more frequently with Li and grows increasingly exhausted. He asks Haibara whether he can continue living as a sorcerer, revealing doubts beneath his usual composure 43.
During a discussion with Yuki Tsukumo about preventing cursed spirits from forming, Geto proposes killing all non-sorcerers. He admits that his contempt for them and his rejection of that contempt are in constant conflict. Li challenges the proposal by pointing out that sorcerers can have non-sorcerer children, meaning Geto’s ideal would require an endless slaughter of infants 44.
Yuki’s subsequent revelation that another Star Plasma Vessel had been available deepens Geto’s despair. He is left questioning whether Riko’s death, Kuroi’s injuries, and their struggle had been unnecessary 45.
Village Massacre and Defection
Recognizing the village from his earlier simulation, Li tries to prevent Geto’s defection. The discovery of the abused twin girls—and the village chief’s declaration that they should have been killed as babies—still drives Geto to attempt a massacre 46 47 48.
Li suppresses Cursed Spirit Manipulation with Nagi Daytime Prohibition and tries to restrain him physically. Geto counters with hand-to-hand combat, then uses the Chain of a Thousand Miles, which he had concealed on his body, to kill the village chief 48 49.
Geto defeats Li with Maximum Technique: Uzumaki, bypassing the suppression by converting cursed spirits into concentrated cursed energy rather than commanding them normally. Once Li can no longer maintain the field, Geto releases his remaining spirits, massacres the village, and escapes with the girls. Investigators confirm 112 deaths and designate him for execution under Article 9 of the jujutsu regulations 49.
Appearance
- Black hair with hanging bangs, which sometimes conceal his eyes 8 41 49.
- Narrow, foxlike eyes and a characteristic gentle smile 8 24 46.
- During his decline, he develops dark circles, prominent cheekbones, and a gaunt appearance. Li also notices a sour smell associated with swallowing cursed spirits 43 46.
Personality
Geto initially presents himself as a courteous, principled honor student. He reprimands Gojo for mistreating newcomers and insists that sorcerers exist to protect non-sorcerers. His politeness nevertheless carries a sense of superiority; when demonstrating his technique, he treats powerful cursed spirits almost like toys to lend a weaker classmate 6 14 18.
His compassion is especially evident toward Riko, Kuroi, and the abused girls. He recognizes Kuroi as Riko’s family and approaches the frightened twins gently even while preparing to kill their persecutors 24 48 49.
Geto’s moral identity depends heavily on finding a justifiable purpose for sorcerers’ suffering. Riko’s death, his defeat by Toji, and the cruelty directed at young sorcerers gradually overturn that conviction. He begins calling non-sorcerers “monkeys” and ultimately redefines righteousness as eliminating them 7 8 41 44.
Even during his final confrontation with Li, Geto shows regret and tenderness toward his former companion. Those feelings do not stop him from inflicting potentially fatal injuries or carrying out the massacre 49.
Abilities & Skills
Cursed Spirit Manipulation
Geto subjugates, absorbs, and commands cursed spirits, maintaining a stock numbering in the hundreds during his school years 14 15.
- Combat: Deploys spirits to restrain enemies, attack groups, and overwhelm ordinary people 8 17 49.
- Defense: Can summon a spherical spirit intended to enclose and protect himself and an ally 37.
- Surveillance: Stations spirits as sentries and notices when they are exorcised, but explicitly cannot share their vision 24.
- Absorption cost: Swallowing cursed spirits tastes like consuming a rag used to wipe up vomit—an ordeal he initially keeps secret 15 28.
- Suppression vulnerability: Li’s Nagi Daytime Prohibition prevents ordinary summoning and control while its field remains active 48.
Maximum Technique: Uzumaki
Geto compresses multiple cursed spirits into a destructive mass of highly concentrated cursed energy 49.
- Bypasses Li’s suppression by converting spirits into energy rather than commanding them normally.
- Forces Li to abandon Nagi Daytime Prohibition and attempt a copied Limitless defense.
- Overwhelms that defense and tears through Li’s abdomen, leaving him critically wounded 49.
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Geto remains dangerous even without access to his innate technique 48 49.
- Easily deflects Li’s opening attack and kicks him hard enough to break a dead tree on impact.
- Maintains pressure against repeated close-range attacks despite Li continually healing himself.
- Uses the weight of his chain to defend against Asagirimaru 48 49.
Perception and Analysis
- Notices Li briefly matching Yaga’s cursed-energy wavelength 12.
- Evaluates Wukong’s tactics as Semi-Grade 1 combat strength 33.
- Recognizes inconsistencies in the village chief’s claim that ordinary villagers imprisoned a dangerous cursed spirit 46 47.
- Cannot initially detect Phantom Parade’s activation despite his Special Grade senses 14 27.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Chain of a Thousand Miles — A cursed tool previously used by Toji Fushiguro. Geto wraps it around his body beforehand, allowing him to use it while Cursed Spirit Manipulation is suppressed. He kills the village chief with it and uses its weight to block Li’s blade 49.
Relationships
- Satoru Gojo — Best friend and closest partner. Their arguments over protecting non-sorcerers coexist with strong teamwork. Gojo’s awakening and increasing independence widen the distance between them 18 20 42 43.
- Li Shunchen — Assistant supervisor in one simulation and classmate in others. Their relationship develops into practical cooperation and ideological confrontation. Geto kills him in the first village simulation and nearly kills him in the later one 6 9 17 36 49.
- Shoko Ieiri — Classmate and member of their school group; treats his remaining injuries after the Star Plasma Vessel mission 6 42.
- Masamichi Yaga — Teacher who assigns Geto and Gojo to protect the Star Plasma Vessel 18 19.
- Riko Amanai — Protection target whose wishes he comes to defend. His inability to save her becomes a central source of guilt 24 41 45.
- Misato Kuroi — Riko’s caretaker, whom he recognizes as her family. He blames himself for allowing her kidnapping 24 25.
- Yu Haibara — Junior whose optimism briefly softens Geto’s mood. Haibara’s death contributes to his collapse in the assistant-supervisor simulation 7 43.
- Yuki Tsukumo — Fellow Special Grade whose discussion of eliminating curses prompts Geto to voice his proposal to kill non-sorcerers 43 44.
- Toji Fushiguro — Opponent who gravely wounds him and kills Riko. Geto experiences the defeat as a profound humiliation and a challenge to his worldview 41 44.
- The twin girls — Abused children he rescues from the village. He escapes with them after the later massacre 48 49.
