Background / History
Family tragedy and the Zenin simulation
Li Shunchen lives for fifteen years before the violent deaths of his parents trigger his past-life memories and awaken his dormant Fate Gacha system. His father leaves him Asagirimaru, a cursed short blade that Li suspects attracted the creature attacking their home. Facing certain death, he receives the Causal Deduction Simulator and begins testing possible futures 1.
In his first documented simulation, Assistant Supervisor Sato pretends to protect him while plotting to acquire Asagirimaru. Li detects the deception, throws the blade to Sato, and lets the Grade 2 Blade-Eater kill him. A threatening call to his father’s phone then leads Li toward the Zenin Clan 2 3.
That future ends under Naoya Zenin, who uses Li’s body to shield himself from a Semi-Grade 1 cursed spirit and kills him during the attack. The simulation leaves Li with experience, stronger cursed energy, and a lasting determination to make the Zenin Clan repay its blood debt 5.
Assistant Supervisor route and entry into Jujutsu High
A subsequent simulation places Li at Tokyo Jujutsu High as a trainee Assistant Supervisor. He handles mission aftermath and improves his Curtain technique while observing Gojo’s rise and Geto’s deteriorating beliefs. After equipping Parting Gift, he accompanies Geto to a village where two girls are being abused; this route ends with Geto killing him 6 7 8 9.
Returning to reality with Phantom Parade, Li abandons the Assistant Supervisor route. He exorcises the cursed spirit in his basement, plants Sato’s illicit ledger where investigators will find it, and poses as a traumatized novice. Window’s investigators bring him to Masamichi Yaga, whose entrance test he passes by briefly taking control of an attacking cursed corpse 9 10 11 12.
He joins the first-year class alongside Satoru Gojo, Suguru Geto, and Shoko Ieiri. Sharing Shoko’s preferred cigarettes earns her friendship and an additional simulation attempt. His later demonstrations of Blue and healing impress the class, while his precise cursed corpse control earns Yaga’s recognition and another opportunity to simulate 13 27 28 29 30.
Star Plasma Vessel simulations
Li’s first documented attempt to alter the Star Plasma Vessel mission ends when Toji Fushiguro silently pierces his heart. After returning, Li realizes that his healing ability made him a priority target: saving Gojo would undermine Toji’s plan. He also recognizes that his involvement has changed events, making foreknowledge alone unreliable 20 26.
In a later simulation, he urges Gojo and Geto to reach the hotel early and neutralizes Kekun’s explosive attacks. Riko Amanai nevertheless dies. After Gojo kills Toji, Li investigates the incident through Mei Mei, seeking information about the Time Vessel Association and whoever issued the mission 37 42.
Haibara’s survival and the village confrontation
During the later simulation, Li warns Yu Haibara to retreat if his assigned curse proves stronger than reported. The warning saves both Haibara and Kento Nanami from a misclassified Grade 1 Land God, and Li reattaches Nanami’s severed arm. He then seeks accountability for the intelligence failure, only to learn that the higher-ups have presented the original mission payment as relief money 43 45 46.
Recognizing the remote village as the site of Geto’s massacre in an earlier simulation, Li sends the Assistant Supervisor away and tries to intervene. When Geto discovers the imprisoned girls and prepares to slaughter the villagers, Li suppresses Cursed Spirit Manipulation with Nagi Daytime Prohibition. He argues that their anger does not justify personally executing the villagers 46 48.
The confrontation becomes a physical fight. Li heals while maintaining the suppression, but Geto subsequently forces cursed spirits into a destructive vortex despite it. Li loses consciousness, and the returning Assistant Supervisor finds the village devastated the next morning; the supplied account does not establish Li’s final condition in that simulation 48 49.
Appearance
- Dark eyes 11.
- Black-framed glasses, initially worn as part of a disguise and later retained in his student persona 12 27.
- Asagirimaru carried at his waist, ready to draw during combat or demonstrations 28.
Personality
Li is calculating and skilled at appearing harmless. He recognizes Sato’s false reassurance, exploits his greed, and later stages the basement to conceal his own planning. His frightened-survivor performance convinces experienced investigators that they have found a newly awakened prodigy 2 3 10 11.
He is ambitious, stubborn, and slow to forget mistreatment. Naoya’s cruelty produces an explicit vow of revenge, while Gojo’s challenge prompts him to force an analysis even after Phantom Parade warns of the difficulty. He wants enough strength to stand beside his classmates rather than remain expendable support staff 5 12 13 29.
His willingness to retaliate does not extend to indiscriminate killing. Although he understands Geto’s disgust with jujutsu society, he rejects the massacre of ordinary people and insists that punishment requires laws and order. His attempts to save Riko, Haibara, Nanami, and Geto lead Geto to describe him as a mortal who nevertheless wants to save everyone 9 45 48 49.
Abilities & Skills
Fate Gacha and Causal Deduction Simulator
Fate Gacha grants equippable traits, while the unique UR-grade Causal Deduction Simulator lets Li observe possible futures outside real-world time 1.
- Inherited training: Completed simulations transfer experience, muscle memory, and causal feedback to his real self 1 9 26.
- Cursed energy growth: Documented settlements raise his reserves from 5 to 10, 15, and 20 1 5 9 26.
- Additional attempts: Recognition from Shoko and Yaga grants extra causal observation opportunities 13 30.
- Reward limits: His real-world defeat of the Grade 2 spirit does not grant an attempt because it is not a qualifying system mission 10.
- Psychological cost: Simulated deaths leave vivid memories and phantom sensations of fatal wounds 9 26.
Phantom Parade
Phantom Parade reads memories within cursed energy to analyze and reproduce techniques. Li can gather information through contact with, or perception of, cursed energy, including residue left after a sorcerer’s death 9 10 14.
- Analysis is not instant mastery: His first reproduced paper puppet is stiff and weak; useful applications still require practice 10 28.
- Complexity can overwhelm him: His initial attempt to analyze Gojo causes a severe headache, nosebleed, and failure 13.
- Only one replicated technique can be maintained at a time: Switching techniques breaks the existing connection, disrupting puppets or controlled spirits 29.
- Cursed spirit analysis: He tells Yaga that he can read living cursed spirits, although his later explanation to the class leaves the extent of that ability uncertain 15 28.
| Reproduced technique | Documented application | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Puppet Manipulation | Animates a paper decoy and briefly usurps Yaga’s cursed corpse 10 12. | Initial puppet is unsuitable for direct combat; Yaga readily reclaims his corpse 10 12. |
| Limitless / Blue | Produces a momentary imitation of Limitless in simulation and pulls chalk at close range in reality 15 27. | Early Limitless lasts less than half a second; Blue requires extensive simulated practice 15 28. |
| Cursed Spirit Manipulation | Temporarily subjugates low-level spirits for reconnaissance in simulation 15. | Control ends when Phantom Parade stops; switching techniques risks losing the controlled spirits 15 29. |
| Reverse Cursed Technique | Heals other people, including Yaga’s palm in reality 15 28. | Initially reproduced through Phantom Parade; later mastered independently in simulation 48. |
Reverse Cursed Technique
Li first reproduces healing after studying Shoko’s ability. His capacity to heal others makes him Jujutsu High’s second demonstrated practitioner of external healing alongside her 15 28.
- Heals Yaga’s deep palm wound in under half a minute without leaving a scar 28.
- Reattaches Nanami’s severed arm during the later simulation 45.
- Eventually heals his own abdominal injuries in under two seconds while maintaining Nagi Daytime Prohibition, proving independent mastery rather than simultaneous replication 48.
Nagi Daytime Prohibition
The cursed technique reversal of Phantom Parade cancels the frequencies of techniques Li has already copied and mastered instead of reproducing them 48.
- Suppresses Geto’s Cursed Spirit Manipulation within a certain range while Li maintains it 48.
- Li reveals its mechanics to strengthen its effectiveness through Revealing One’s Cursed Technique 48.
- Its suppression is not absolute: Geto subsequently forces out and compresses cursed spirits into a destructive vortex 49.
Cursed Corpse Construction and Control
Li studies under Yaga to obtain combat support that will not disappear whenever he switches replicated techniques 29.
- Controls three practice cursed corpses simultaneously with different stances and precise energy distribution 29.
- Constructs Wukong during a simulation; the corpse defeats a Grade 2 spirit by attacking its core 30.
- Studies Yaga’s three-core design, but the supplied account does not confirm completion of such a corpse 30.
Barrier Techniques and Combat Tactics
- Curtain: Develops proficiency while handling mission aftermath as a simulated Assistant Supervisor 7 9.
- Directional Blast Boundary: Redirects explosions and changes their point of manifestation during the hotel mission 37.
- Ambush tactics: Combines concealment, decoys, blind spots, and Asagirimaru for a one-strike Grade 2 exorcism 10.
- Close combat: Attempts to subdue Geto physically after suppressing his technique, but is outmatched in the initial exchange 48.
Notable Fate Traits
| Trait | Grade | Effect or use |
|---|---|---|
| Mental Contamination Resistance | N | Prevents a breakdown after his parents’ deaths and later helps conceal his grief 1 42. |
| Faint Presence / Low Presence | N | Reduces noticeability; enables him to evade an instinct-driven Grade 2 spirit’s attention without granting true invisibility 1 9 10. |
| Cursed Energy Allergy | Not stated | Heightens perception of cursed energy, allowing him to detect Sato’s powerless talisman and react to Yaga’s attack 2 12. |
| Endure Humiliation and Bear Burdens | R | Increases physical recovery by 50% and reduces pain feedback when he suffers malicious external harm 5. |
| Life Is Like a Play | R | Supports convincing performances, including his portrayal of a terrified survivor 6 11. |
| Parting Gift | SR | Cannot be replaced once equipped; is consumed upon death to grant a higher-quality card, with quality increasing over time. Its settlement unlocks Phantom Parade 7 9. |
| Overachiever | R | Boosts stamina and energy recovery by 50% while no outsiders notice him, supporting intensive training 16 26 28. |
| Natural Perfection | R | Drawn at the beginning of his third year in a simulation; its effect is not supplied 43. |
