| First Appearance | Earliest documented appearance in the supplied material: intervention during Utahime’s rescue 17. |
Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Enlarged earlier body | 84 | An earlier depiction shows Great Sage having grown from a roughly half-meter-tall monkey into a human-sized combatant. He attacks Suguru Geto and his Cursed Spirits with a long blade wielded like a heavy staff. |
| Fully Independent Cursed Corpse | 297 298 | Awakened through three cores carrying Shunchen’s memories. Generates cursed energy independently and begins life with mature judgment and engraved combat experience. |
| Grade 1 incident-response capability | 298 | Raw cursed energy is slightly below Shunchen’s then-current Grade 1 human-state reserves, but New Shadow Style mastery, cursed tools, and a tireless body are assessed as sufficient for difficult Grade 1 Cursed Spirit incidents. |
| Cursed-object-enhanced Grade 1 combatants | 311 | External cursed objects raise the models to the level of exceptionally powerful Grade 1 sorcerers. Further qualitative improvement requires new breakthroughs from Shunchen. |
| Mixed Grade 1 / Super Grade 1 force | 318 | The twenty-unit force consists of twelve Super Grade 1 Great Sages powered by Sukuna’s Fingers and eight Grade 1-level units powered by ordinary high-grade cursed objects. Special Grade energy greatly improves defenses and reduces wear. |
| Soul Liberation Claws upgrade | 356 | All twenty deployed units receive defense-bypassing, soul-striking claws. An individual Great Sage is assessed as standing at the pinnacle below Special Grade sorcerers and capable of killing most Special Grade Cursed Spirits alone. |
| Covert battlefield configuration | 365 | One Great Sage receives a roughly 1.8-meter humanoid body, concealed soul-attacking fingernails, a tactical-dagger-shaped Soul Liberation Blade, and an internally concealed Chain of a Thousand Miles Chain. |
Background / History
Early Cursed Corpse
Great Sage initially serves as Shunchen’s combat support. During Utahime’s rescue, Shunchen uses him to strike an attacking Cursed Spirit before asking Suguru Geto to delay absorbing it so its technique can be analyzed 17.
His early body is later destroyed while protecting Shunchen from someone transformed into Toji Fushiguro. Shunchen preserves the surviving core as a protective charm, carries it constantly, and nurtures it with cursed energy 70.
When Masamichi Yaga’s panda-like Cursed Corpse becomes unstable, Shunchen offers Great Sage’s core as a stabilizer. Although its output is modest, its underlying feedback is exceptionally stable. Shunchen uses Limitless to arrange a three-core energy cycle; the panda initially appears inert, then begins breathing 70.
Independent Prototype and Production Series
After his fifth simulation, Shunchen engraves that simulation’s memories, despair, and guilt into three cores and assembles them inside a Great Sage doll. The awakened being rejects the idea that he is simply another Shunchen, recognizes him as his creator, and promises to become his blade 297.
The prototype becomes central to Shunchen’s bid for Special Grade recognition. Great Sage destroys a Grade 2 Cursed Spirit before the Higher-Ups, deliberately displaying New Shadow Style to intimidate them. Shunchen then offers to make the production technology public 300.
The Higher-Ups retain Great Sage for a week under the pretext of a safety assessment. Their experts cannot reproduce him, and even Yaga acknowledges that the creation is beyond his capabilities. Great Sage returns unharmed, and Shunchen receives his Special Grade classification 302.
A second Great Sage is subsequently created with subtly different speech habits and pauses despite nearly identical underlying parameters. A third follows, establishing that the shared design produces distinguishable individuals rather than perfectly interchangeable copies 310 311.
Damage and Reconstruction
An ancient incarnated sorcerer’s lightning attack burns through the prototype’s internal circuits and forces his cores into shutdown. Unlike Panda, who can switch between independently functioning cores, Great Sage’s overlapping memory cores share a single controlling system; corruption in one can disable the entire being 303 304.
Shunchen later reconstructs the damaged circuitry in work almost as demanding as creating Great Sage anew. Great Sage awakens with the same soul wavelength, confirming continuity of identity, but retains no external memories from after the protective shutdown 309.
Later-Timeline Core
In a subsequent timeline, Shunchen engraves a single Great Sage Core with all his accumulated memories, including the preceding simulation. The core becomes the only other repository of those memories in that timeline—described as equivalent to half his brain 387.
Shunchen places it inside Panda without compulsory underlying directives. It remains dormant while being allowed to know what is happening in the present world 387.
Appearance
- Original form: A monkey-like doll initially about half a meter tall; an earlier depiction later gives him human height and proportions 84.
- Independent-model shell: A small, furry, plush-toy-like body with cotton cloth and stitching over artificial internal mechanisms 297 300 356.
- Eyes: Mechanical eyes; newly awakened models display a spectral blue glow associated with soul-core activity 309 310.
- Hands: Furry paws fitted with extendable Soul Liberation Claws after the armament upgrade 356.
- Battlefield shell: A specially constructed metal body resembling a muscular adult man approximately 1.8 meters tall. A combat uniform, tactical equipment, and helmet allow him to pass as a soldier amid battlefield confusion 365.
Personality
Great Sage begins independent life with Shunchen’s combat memories, mature reasoning, responsibility, and accumulated pain already engraved into him. He is calm, precise, and capable of executing violence without outward emotional fluctuation, but explicitly distinguishes himself from his creator 297 300 301.
His judgment is not limited to literal obedience. Two Great Sages abandon an instruction to capture an ancient sorcerer alive when they conclude that he might detonate his entire body. They instead behead him during regeneration to prevent a potentially catastrophic explosion, then preserve his head for analysis 311.
Beneath his mechanical manner, Great Sage possesses empathy and a strong drive to protect vulnerable people. Foreign operatives exploit this during a staged fire, leaving him distressed over whether resisting their attempt to dismantle him was morally wrong 333.
Years of overseas warfare profoundly damage his sense of self. He struggles with killing soldiers and civilians, but suffers most from destroying brain-powered constructs he perceives as fellow beings trapped in artificial bodies. By his return, he is exhausted, uncertain what he is, and unwilling to continue 366 367.
Abilities & Skills
Independent Cursed Energy Generation
The independent models generate their own cursed energy rather than requiring a sorcerer’s continuous supply 297 300.
- Can operate without sleep or food and maintain prolonged combat readiness 318 365.
- Can incorporate external cursed objects into their energy circulation 311 318.
- Sukuna’s Fingers function as power sources without causing Sukuna to incarnate 318.
- Using external Special Grade energy while keeping the internal cores’ contribution minimal reduces physical and spiritual wear to almost zero 318.
Engraved Memory and Layered Soul
Each independent Great Sage carries Shunchen’s memories and combat experience through three tightly overlapping cores 297 338.
- Begins life with mature cognition instead of requiring a human-like infancy 301.
- Retains memories of Shunchen’s teaching in previous simulations, allowing him to reproduce lessons and adapt them to current students 302 338.
- Possesses a layered soul resembling Shunchen’s simulation-layered soul, but is not a perfect physical or spiritual duplicate 338.
- Does not inherit every system-granted ability; Great Sage specifically lacks Shunchen’s Dimensionality Reduction Analysis Card capability 302.
- Small differences in engraving and core overlap contribute to individual differences between models 310 338.
New Shadow Style
Great Sage’s cores contain refined New Shadow Style muscle memory, allowing an artificial body to perform master-level swordsmanship 297 300.
- Uses cursed tools for fast, economical kills rather than relying solely on unarmed strength 297.
- Employs force deflection, counterattacks, and coordinated defensive coverage 303.
- Uses New Shadow Style: Simple Domain against Domain Expansion’s sure-hit effect 356.
- Can attempt a bladeless New Shadow Style: Iaijutsu: Oborozuki, substituting a clawed knife-hand for a sword to deliver a sonic-speed soul-striking thrust 356.
- The anti-domain counterattack is a calculated emergency tactic, not a demonstrated guarantee against disaster-class enemies 356.
Physical Strength and Durability
Great Sages combine tireless artificial bodies with powerful cursed-energy reinforcement 303 318.
- One unit stops and overturns an out-of-control heavy truck while protecting Atsuya Kusakabe’s nephew, Xiaowu 317.
- Special Grade reinforcement lets enhanced units withstand attacks from comparable cursed spirits without their defenses being easily breached 318.
- Ordinary Grade 1 and Special Grade 1 curse users are assessed as inadequate opponents for the later models 342.
Reconnaissance and Tactical Judgment
Great Sages conduct surveillance, identify suspicious targets, and coordinate with human support personnel 323 339 340.
- Protect Yuta Okkotsu and Rika Orimoto by clearing nearby low-level curses and monitoring likely accident points rather than maintaining flawless close-range surveillance 323.
- Investigate uncertain incarnation cases and provide coordinates for Shunchen’s interventions 339 342.
- Recognize when a target warrants preservation as an intelligence sample 311.
- The overseas operative creates small cursed corpses from local materials to build a concealed intelligence network 366.
Limitations
- Core-system vulnerability: Damage or distortion in one overlapping memory core can collapse the entire operating system into protective dormancy 304.
- No innate cursed technique: Great Sage and Panda initially rely on their bodies, cursed tools, and New Shadow Style rather than innate techniques 303.
- No self-regeneration: Severe physical damage requires outside repairs; Great Sage cannot restore destroyed parts through Reverse Cursed Technique 304.
- Travel time: Units cannot teleport between assignments and must travel physically or use dedicated vehicles 318.
- Limited ranged coverage: Highly mobile, flying, or concealed enemies are troublesome because the standard models lack strong anti-air capabilities and wide-area firepower 356.
- Emotional vulnerability: Their protective instincts can be exploited, and prolonged moral conflict can cause severe psychological harm despite their resistance to ordinary fatigue 333 367.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Asagirimaru — Used during the prototype’s New Shadow Style demonstration before the Higher-Ups 300.
- Compact cursed tools — Portable, folding, or retractable weapons selected to suit the models’ small bodies and avoid conspicuous full-sized blades 356.
- Sukuna’s Fingers and other cursed objects — External power sources that increase operational endurance, reinforcement, and combat output 311 318.
- Soul Liberation Claws — Constructed weapons fitted to all twenty deployed units. Preserve the Soul Liberation Blade’s ability to bypass physical toughness and strike the soul directly 356.
- Tactical-dagger Soul Liberation Blade — Built for the humanoid overseas operative to supplement his retained soul-attacking fingernails 365.
- Chain of a Thousand Miles Chain — Concealed inside the overseas operative’s arm for restraining and strangling targets at medium and long range 365.
- Communicator — Used to contact supporting Assistant Supervisors and arrange management of nearby disturbances 340.
Relationships
- Li Shunchen — Creator and source of Great Sage’s memories. Shunchen eventually understands the Great Sages as offspring rather than copies or weapons, and later acknowledges the suffering caused by assigning them his responsibilities 338 367 371.
- Masamichi Yaga — Recognizes the original Great Sage Core and accepts its use in stabilizing Panda. Later admits he cannot reproduce Shunchen’s independent model 70 302.
- Panda — Recipient of the early Great Sage Core, later teammate of the independent prototype, and fellow instructor to Nanami and Haibara 70 302.
- Kento Nanami and Yu Haibara — Mission partners and students. Great Sage teaches them anti-domain swordsmanship through relentless practical training 302 317.
- Megumi Fushiguro, Yuji Itadori, and Nobara Kugisaki — Students who receive practical combat instruction from the Tokyo-patrolling Great Sage 338.
- Yuta Okkotsu and Rika Orimoto — Secretly protected during childhood to reduce the risk of Rika’s death and subsequent transformation into the Queen of Curses 323.
- Kasumi Miwa — Offered access to a Kyoto-area Great Sage as a sparring partner 351.
- Assistant Supervisors — Provide transport, communication, and field support. One accompanying supervisor helps preserve the truth after the staged-fire incident 302 333 340.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Replacing Dangerous Sorcerer Work
- The force grows to ten units, then twenty; Shunchen subsequently suspends further production 316 318 326.
- The Higher-Ups adopt a cover story that Assistant Supervisors remotely operate the Great Sages through brain-computer interfaces 318.
- Their efficiency transforms the mission economy and contributes to Nanami and Haibara’s decision to leave registered sorcery because they feel unnecessary 318 319.
- Reduced casualties also mean fewer tragedies producing new students and less practical combat experience for existing students 326 349.
- By 2024, their replacement of sorcerers in dangerous work supports the gradual closure of Jujutsu High and a shift toward discovery and registration 364.
The Staged Fire
Foreign operatives exploit a patrolling Great Sage’s obligation to rescue civilians. After he enters a burning apartment, the supposed victims restrain him and demand that he allow himself to be dismantled. He escapes with them, but their resistance and falling debris cause burns; they then falsely accuse him before witnesses 333.
The incident leaves Great Sage more troubled by his choices than by his damaged body. His question—whether he should have submitted to protect his attackers—forces Shunchen to confront the personhood and vulnerability of his creation 333.
Overseas Cursed-Energy Weapons
Shunchen sends a remodeled Great Sage abroad after discovering weapons built from human brains and secret “Human Ranch” facilities. Using an artificial operative avoids leaving human biological evidence or exposing Japanese sorcerers as the source of intervention 365.
During a war lasting nearly ten years, Great Sage systematically destroys cursed-energy weapons and their production capacity. The participating powers eventually redirect resources toward conventional technologies, including automated robots and drone swarms 366.
Great Sage returns with severe trauma. He regards the destroyed constructs as kindred beings and experiences his mission as repeatedly killing versions of himself. Shunchen apologizes and resolves never to create and deploy another Fully Independent Cursed Corpse 367.
Great Sage subsequently requests his original body back because the humanoid shell continually recalls the war. The supplied passage records the request, not its completion 368.
Long-Term Stewardship and Intended Freedom
The Great Sages help maintain Jujutsu Society during Shunchen’s decades of solitary research and successfully handle the disruption after he dismantles the Sendai Barrier 370.
Near the end of his life, Shunchen credits them—not himself—with saving people. He declares his intention to give them genuine freedom to continue protecting the world, remain, or leave according to their own wishes 371.
