| Near-death awakening / Reverse Cursed Technique | 5 9 12 28 | Recounted as occurring ten years earlier during the Star Plasma Vessel Incident. After failing to learn Reverse Cursed Technique from Shoko, Gojo mastered it on the brink of death following Toji Fushiguro’s attack. He turned the battle around, killed Toji, and emerged as the strongest sorcerer. |
Background / History
Gojo attended Jujutsu High under Masamichi Yaga and formed the “Strongest Duo” with his best friend, Suguru Geto. During the Star Plasma Vessel Incident, they fought to protect Riko Amanai, but she was murdered by an assassin hired by ordinary people. Gojo’s near-death awakening during the incident widened the difference in strength between the two friends 28 35.
Afterward, Jujutsu High increasingly assigned Gojo missions to complete alone. Geto likewise worked in isolation, struggling with consuming cursed spirits and the repeated deaths of sorcerers protecting ordinary people. Gojo noticed his friend’s deteriorating condition but did not investigate deeply enough, remaining occupied with his own assignments 28.
Geto eventually massacred a village, killed his parents, and defected from Jujutsu High. Ordered to execute him, Gojo instead tried unsuccessfully to change his mind and ultimately let him leave. He later regretted not giving Geto more attention before their separation 28.
Appearance
- White hair, which leads Maki and Utahime to address him with variations of “white-haired idiot” or “white-haired bastard” 3 38.
- Vivid blue eyes, described as resembling the color of the sky 5.
- White bandages or a blindfold covering his eyes; he removes the covering when closely examining Akutagawa Shang 5 12.
- A long-healed scar beneath his hair, left by Toji Fushiguro’s blade 5.
Personality
Gojo is theatrical, flippant, and deliberately provocative. He reenacts Akutagawa’s rescue with a Specium Ray pose, secretly records his embarrassing training behavior, and repeatedly turns official school proceedings into opportunities to tease colleagues 2 4 35 41. He also misreads Utahime’s genuine hostility as joking rather than recognizing how much she dislikes him 45.
His teaching combines practical experimentation with teasing and pressure. When Akutagawa’s unusual abilities resist conventional explanations, Gojo tests their limits and develops a training plan around absorbing attacks. He persuades the reluctant student to participate by pointing out that he has been paying for his meals 12 13.
Despite his unserious manner, Gojo is fiercely protective of his students. He intervenes against Yuta’s execution, confronts officials who manipulate dangerous missions, and explicitly places student safety above competition rules. He is equally open about his pride, loudly celebrating Yuta’s first Black Flash in the monitoring room 17 24 38 47.
Abilities & Skills
Six Eyes
A rare hereditary trait of the Gojo Clan that grants exceptional perception and cursed-energy control. Only one bearer can exist at a time 5.
- Provides a 360-degree field of vision without blind spots, even while his eyes are covered 5.
- Detects cursed-energy flow and analyzes its type, trajectory, and source 5.
- Allows atomic-level precision, reducing the cursed energy consumed by techniques to almost zero 5.
- Cannot detect Akutagawa’s concealed internal cursed energy, even when fully active; Gojo can observe it when Akutagawa releases it 5.
- Supports rapid processing of speed and distance, which Gojo uses to weave through Tokyo traffic while driving 17.
Limitless
The Gojo Clan’s inherited technique, whose operation requires extraordinarily precise cursed-energy manipulation 13.
- Defensive use: Stops Utahime’s thrown cup and tea before either can touch him 45.
- Selective deactivation: Gojo disables it to permit direct contact during Akutagawa’s absorption test and allows Yaga to physically discipline him 12 35.
- Operational requirement: Without the Six Eyes, its computational burden and control demands make it almost impossible to use safely. Akutagawa nearly damages his brain attempting to reproduce it 13.
Lapse Technique: Blue
An application of Limitless associated with spatial distortion and attraction 12 24.
- Shreds a tree when Gojo intimidates the guard outside the higher-ups’ chamber 24.
- Pulls apart the council chamber, leaving the officials exposed outdoors 24.
- Akutagawa briefly approaches reproducing Blue after absorbing Gojo’s cursed energy, but collapses before completing it 12.
Cursed Technique Reversal: Red
A technique made possible through Reverse Cursed Technique 11.
- A low-powered use blasts away part of the council chamber’s ceiling and a small hill behind it 24.
Reverse Cursed Technique
Gojo mastered Reverse Cursed Technique only after a near-death experience, despite earlier instruction from Shoko 5 12.
- Enabled him to survive his encounter with Toji and turn the battle around 5 9.
- Gojo openly acknowledges that Akutagawa’s speed and efficiency in learning it exceed his own 12.
Teleportation
Gojo repeatedly moves between locations instantaneously 5 6.
- Rescues Akutagawa moments before he strikes the ground after an uncontrolled cursed-energy-enhanced jump 5.
- Crosses the training field to rejoin the students 6.
Curtain Barriers
Gojo can lower a Curtain to conceal jujutsu activity from ordinary people 7.
- Envelops the elementary school during Akutagawa and Maki’s first practical mission, making the campus appear dark 7.
- Explains that the barrier is easy to undo from inside 7.
Cursed-Energy Control
Gojo possesses enormous cursed-energy reserves and can precisely regulate their release 12.
- Resists Akutagawa’s direct absorption strongly enough to make the process consume more energy than it gains 12.
- Voluntarily injects cursed energy into Akutagawa to test his storage capacity and ability to reproduce techniques 12.
- Fires compressed cursed energy to demonstrate the defensive properties of Akutagawa’s new glove 25.
- Cannot deliberately produce Black Flash at will; the narration explicitly includes him in this limitation 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruiting and Training Akutagawa Shang
Gojo rescues Akutagawa from a cursed spirit while on his way to queue for Kikusuian’s daifuku. Discovering that the unidentified newcomer has awakened cursed energy, he offers him accommodation and instruction at Jujutsu High 2.
His work with Akutagawa centers on finding practical uses for the student’s unusual body and absorption ability:
- Introduces him to Maki, Panda, and Inumaki and begins basic cursed-energy instruction 3 4.
- Gives him a phone containing the group’s contact details and pairs him with Maki for practical lessons 6.
- Establishes that direct absorption can be resisted and that stored energy has an upper limit 12.
- Determines that absorbed energy can grant temporary access to its owner’s innate technique 13.
- Prescribes reinforcement, safely enduring cursed-energy attacks, and close-combat training with Maki 13.
- Provides a specially prepared glove that stores incoming cursed energy and can create a protective barrier 25.
Securing Yuta Okkotsu’s Enrollment
Gojo intervenes after learning that Yuta, despite being possessed by a dangerous entity, actively tries to prevent others from being hurt. He persuades the higher-ups to suspend Yuta’s execution and permit his enrollment, then brings Akutagawa to help welcome him out of confinement 17 18.
- Blocks Rika’s attack during Yuta’s disastrous classroom introduction 19.
- Assigns Yuta and Akutagawa to an abandoned-hospital mission, initially reported as involving a Grade 2 curse 20.
- Confronts the higher-ups over the concealed danger, warns them against reinstating Yuta’s execution, and destroys their council chamber 23 24.
- Advises Yuta to channel Rika’s curse into his sword and gradually increase his capacity to control it 25.
- Entrusts Yuta’s cursed-energy instruction to Akutagawa and arranges further field experience alongside Inumaki 25 30.
Geto’s Attempted Recruitment
Akutagawa’s report that Geto tried to recruit him abruptly breaks Gojo’s cheerful mood. After reflecting on their shared past, Gojo questions Akutagawa about his response. Relieved by the refusal, he promises to handle Geto himself 28.
Sister-School Goodwill Event
Gojo announces Tokyo’s participants and offers a three-million-yen victory reward, performance bonuses, and seven days off, winning over the initially reluctant Akutagawa 29 30.
- Challenges the rule prohibiting Yuta from fully manifesting Rika, then accepts Yuta’s decision to compete under the restriction 38.
- Tells Yuta to summon Rika if genuinely endangered and promises to take responsibility 38.
- Opens the competition and warns Gakuganji against targeting his students 41.
- Questions Mei Mei when Yuta disappears from surveillance and suspects deliberate interference despite her excuses 42.
- Celebrates Yuta’s return to the screens and subsequent Black Flash against Aoi Todo 45 47.
Relationships

Notable Quotes
“The only reason I haven't bothered killing you is that I don't think it would accomplish anything right now. Don't push me.” 24
“If you're really in danger, forget those stupid rules and call Rika out. I'll take responsibility for whatever happens.” 38
“Huh? Yeah, I favor my students. Got a problem with that?” 38
Trivia
- Particularly enjoys Kikusuian’s edamame-and-fresh-cream daifuku; his attempt to queue early places him nearby when Akutagawa needs rescuing 2.
- Akutagawa introduces him to Yuta as the record holder for eating eighteen sweet daifuku in a row 18.
- Says he paid for the construction and furnishing of Jujutsu High’s dormitories, using this to dismiss Akutagawa’s complaint about him entering without permission 17.
- Cites having played every game in the Horizon series as reassurance about his driving. Akutagawa subsequently chooses a taxi rather than ride with him again 17 19.
