Background / History

Transportation and Enrollment

Shang was a university student preparing for his third attempt at the CET-6 English examination. After leaving his dormitory for a late-night snack, he emerged from a convenience store onto an unfamiliar Japanese street. Although he did not speak Japanese, he could read the signs around him 1.

Searching for someone to explain his surroundings, he entered an alley and found a mutilated victim suspended from electrical wires. A cursed spirit pierced his right leg and nearly crushed him. His desperate counterattack awakened cursed energy, but blood loss left him unconscious before Gojo rescued him 1 2.

Shoko treated his injuries and cleared the residual cursed energy from his body. With no apparent route home or identification records in the new world, Shang accepted Gojo’s offer of accommodation and training at Jujutsu High. He recognized Gojo and the setting from anime he had watched in his original world 2.

First Mission with Maki

Paired with Maki for practical training, Shang used his perception to locate curses inside a school building. A much stronger spirit ambushed and swallowed them, leaving Maki’s sword lodged in its throat. Inside its stomach, they discovered two children weakened by curses 6 8.

Unable to overcome the stomach’s regeneration, Shang turned to his newly discovered absorption ability. He stabilized the children, drew curse energy from Maki’s injury, and removed the trace of energy limiting her Heavenly Restriction. Maki’s resulting transformation enabled her to kill the spirit and free the group 9 10.

Helping Yuta Okkotsu

Shang accompanied Gojo to Yuta’s execution holding facility. Rather than treating Yuta as a monster, he offered him classmates who would accept him and a way to use his power to save people. Yuta agreed to attend Jujutsu High and was subsequently paired with Shang for practical combat 18 19.

Their hospital assignment became a battle against a curse whose true body encompassed the building. Shang could replenish his energy and heal his wounds, but lacked the destructive power to demolish the hospital and was gradually exhausted by its attacks. Seeing him repeatedly injured prompted Yuta to fully manifest Rika and intervene 20 21 22.

After healing, Shang pretended to lose consciousness and left the remaining fighting to Yuta. The two continued training together afterward, and Gojo formally entrusted Yuta’s cursed-energy instruction to Shang 23 24 25.

Geto’s Recruitment Attempt

While buying desserts for Gojo, Shang exorcised a spirit tormenting a girl. Geto witnessed his use of Reverse Cursed Technique and approached him about joining his cause. Without that demonstration, Geto admitted he would probably have mistaken Shang for a non-sorcerer 26 27.

Shang reported the encounter to Gojo and rejected Geto’s project, saying he had neither the interest nor the energy for it. He kept the incident from Maki to avoid worrying her unnecessarily 28 29.

Sister-School Goodwill Event

Initially dismissing the competition as unpaid overtime, Shang agreed to participate after Gojo offered a three-million-yen victory reward, performance bonuses, and seven days off 29.

He devised Tokyo’s strategy: use Yuta to draw away Kyoto’s students, clear their side of cursed spirits, and capture the final Grade 2 spirit to force a sanctioned confrontation. He also warned Yuta that the higher-ups might target him again 39.

During the event, Shang and Maki destroyed a hidden Grade 1 spirit that Noritoshi Kamo later tried to summon. Shang then captured another spirit by severing its legs. When Mai and Kasumi Miwa demanded it, he refused; Maki arrived and took over the confrontation, defeating Miwa before challenging Mai 43 48 49.

Appearance

  • Handsome face: His appearance helps put the girl he approaches about a curse at ease 26.
  • Pronounced dark circles: Present during his university days and especially conspicuous after a sleepless night at Jujutsu High, when Panda compares him to another panda 1 14.
  • Black left-hand glove and sleeve: Wears the defensive cursed tool specially prepared for him by Gojo 25 26.

Personality

Shang is expressive, sarcastic, and prone to dramatic complaints about studying, training, and getting up early. He readily looks for an easier option, but the same student who protests Maki’s training repeatedly gets back up to continue sparring. Financial rewards and time off quickly reverse his reluctance to enter the Goodwill Event 1 16 26 29.

Despite his initial social anxiety, he grows comfortable with his classmates through training and playful arguments. He recognizes Yuta’s loneliness, reassures him that he can make friends, and later hosts Yuta and Inumaki for hot pot. He also stops to help a cursed stranger while running an errand 6 18 26 33.

His tactical thinking favors efficiency and exploiting rules. He suggests more targeted Cursed Speech commands to maximize their effect while reducing backlash, and builds Tokyo’s competition plan around diversion and control of the final objective 15 39.

He is attracted to mature, tall, affectionate women who provide emotional security, but admits to having no romantic experience. His teasing exchanges with Maki frequently leave both of them embarrassed 10 14 37.

Abilities & Skills

Cursed-Energy Concealment and Control

Shang’s otherworldly body conceals his internal cursed energy so thoroughly that even Gojo’s fully active Six Eyes cannot detect it. Gojo attributes this property to his origin outside their world 5.

  • Released energy can become perceptible during attacks; the concealment is not absolute invisibility 5.
  • Minimal leakage allows him to approach a curse unnoticed before striking 21.
  • Precise output control reduces waste, though his initial reserves are limited 7.

Cursed-Energy Perception

He can distinguish concentrations and traces of cursed energy with unusual precision 6 8.

  • Locates hidden spirits and reports their positions to Maki 8.
  • Detects the minute trace of energy within Maki 6.
  • Recognizes rising energy density as the hospital transforms around him 22.
  • Detection does not guarantee sufficient reaction time: he notices the school’s giant curse only shortly before it swallows them 8.

Energy Absorption and Temporary Technique Access

Shang can absorb cursed energy, curse residue, and positive energy. Absorbing a source’s energy can also give him access to its associated technique 9 11 13.

  • Energy recovery: Reclaims energy from severed curse tentacles to offset the cost of his attacks 22.
  • Curse removal: Draws afflicting energy from injured or cursed people 9.
  • Attack absorption: Takes in a Grade 1 spirit’s beam and returns the same attack 32.
  • Resistance limitation: A resisting sorcerer can make direct draining cost more energy than it yields 12.
  • Storage limitation: His body has a finite capacity; Gojo’s injection leaves him pale and overwhelmed as he reaches it 12.
  • Technique duration: Access to a source’s technique disappears once its absorbed energy is exhausted 13.
  • Compatibility limitation: Access does not remove a technique’s other requirements. Attempting Limitless without the Six Eyes nearly damages his brain 13.

Reverse Cursed Technique

By absorbing Shoko’s positive energy, Shang learns to perceive and reproduce its conversion process 11 12.

  • Heals his own fatigue, muscle soreness, and penetrating chest wounds 15 22 23.
  • Treats others, including Inumaki’s injured throat and Maki’s strained back 32 43.
  • Exorcises cursed spirits through direct application of positive energy, including a restrained Grade 1 spirit 26 43.
  • Healing does not eliminate physical exhaustion; the hospital curse can still wear him down through sustained combat 22.

Temporary Completion of Heavenly Restriction

Shang removes the trace of cursed energy within Maki that he identifies as a consequence of her twin connection with Mai. This temporarily completes Maki’s Heavenly Restriction rather than strengthening Shang himself 9 10.

  • Enables Maki to attain the strength needed to escape the giant school curse 10.
  • He assures her that the process can be repeated; it is not presented as a permanent transformation 10.

Swordsmanship and Close Combat

Maki trains Shang in stance, grip, footwork, and exploiting openings. He chooses a bamboo sword for practice and later uses a cursed blade on missions 16 21.

  • Develops the movement needed to evade the hospital curse’s tentacles 21.
  • Eventually coordinates with Yuta well enough for them to hold their own against Maki briefly without cursed energy 25.
  • At the hospital, his offense remains focused on cutting and stabbing; he has no large-scale attack capable of destroying the building 22.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Cursed blade / tachi — Uses a borrowed cursed blade at the hospital and later carries a tachi during the Goodwill Event 20 21 48.
  • Black glove with attached sleeve — Gojo’s custom defensive gift. Tightens to fit when infused with cursed energy, absorbs and stores incoming energy, and can generate a barrier around Shang’s body 25.
  • Bamboo sword / shinai — His chosen practice weapon for sparring with Maki and Yuta 16 24.
  • Mobile phone — Supplied by Gojo with the group’s contact information; used to explain Maki’s transformation without waking the rescued children 6 10.

Relationships

  • Satoru Gojo — Rescuer, teacher, and sponsor. Investigates Shang’s abilities, arranges his training, requests his promotion, and supplies his defensive glove 2 12 13 24 25.
  • Maki Zenin — Mission partner, combat instructor, and romantic interest. Their teasing develops alongside mutual trust; he helps unlock her complete Heavenly Restriction and promises to support her against those who mistreated her at home. No formal relationship is established in the supplied chapters 9 10 16 24 37 39.
  • Yuta Okkotsu — Classmate, friend, and pupil. Shang helps persuade him to enroll, encourages him to use his power constructively, and teaches him cursed-energy control 18 22 25 32.
  • Shoko Ieiri — Treating physician and the source of the positive energy through which he learns Reverse Cursed Technique 2 11.
  • Panda — Classmate and frequent teaser who openly encourages Shang’s relationship with Maki 6 14 16.
  • Toge Inumaki — Classmate and mission companion. Shang proposes alternative applications of Cursed Speech and heals its backlash on his throat 15 32 33.
  • Suguru Geto — Unsuccessful recruiter. Values Shang’s Reverse Cursed Technique and later watches his group fight a planted Grade 1 spirit 27 28 32.
  • Mai Zenin — Maki’s twin, whom Shang initially mistakes for her. Accepts his apology, then flirts with him to provoke Maki and later contests his captured spirit 33 34 37 48.
  • Aoi Todo — Declares Shang his best friend after hearing his preferences in women and promises to face him wholeheartedly at the Goodwill Event 37.
