Background / History

Yuta knew Rika Orimoto from childhood. After her death, she remained with him as a powerful curse, appearing whenever she perceived hostility toward him and protecting him through extreme violence. Yuta initially believed that Rika had cursed him; the resulting injuries and deaths left him isolated, feared as a monster, and reluctant to use her power 18 20 23 45.

After Rika injured bullies, Yuta was confined and sentenced to execution. Attempts to execute him failed, with several executioners killed. During confinement, he also attempted suicide with a knife, but Rika stopped him and twisted the weapon out of shape 17 18 19.

Gojo secured permission for Yuta to attend Jujutsu High instead. Yuta initially refused because he feared hurting more people, but Akutagawa Shang persuaded him that he could find friends among sorcerers and use cursed energy to save lives. He accepted their invitation and left the holding facility with them 18.

Personality

Yuta is kindhearted, introverted, and socially anxious. Long isolation makes him expect rejection: he hesitates outside his new classroom and later mistakes Inumaki’s limited speech for dislike. He is consistently polite, bowing when introducing himself and apologizing to Miwa when returning her confiscated sword 18 19 30 36 44.

His fear of injuring innocent people initially overrides his confidence in battle. He attributes his strength to Rika rather than himself, blames himself when others are hurt, and continues holding back even against dangerous opponents. Saving Akutagawa gives him his first positive experience of using Rika’s power, while Todo later helps him confront the belief that using his full strength must lead to losing control 20 22 23 45.

As his confidence grows, Yuta becomes persistent in training and unexpectedly bold in combat. He repeatedly gets up after Maki knocks him down, willingly serves as Tokyo’s decoy, and adopts unpredictable attacks under Todo’s instruction. His love for Rika remains unwavering despite his earlier fear of her cursed form 24 36 39 41 46.

Cursed Energy Reserves and Reinforcement

Yuta possesses extraordinary cursed-energy reserves; Akutagawa judges their quantity greater than Gojo’s when first meeting him 18.

Rika Orimoto

Rika is a Special Grade vengeful cursed apparition attached to Yuta. She can emerge independently to protect him, but he gradually learns to summon and direct her deliberately 19 22.

• Automatic protection: Reacts violently to perceived threats, including Yuta being cornered by his classmates 19.
• Full manifestation: Yuta uses his ring as a connection when calling upon her complete form 22 25.
• Destructive power: Tears apart the hospital curse’s tentacles, crushes its core, and demolishes the building sustaining it 23.

• Akutagawa Shang — Classmate, practical-combat partner, and cursed-energy instructor, whom Yuta addresses as his senior. Akutagawa helps secure his enrollment and repeatedly encourages him to use his abilities to protect others 18 19 22 25.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Enrollment at Jujutsu High

• Yuta’s dense, visibly apparent cursed aura causes Maki, Panda, and Inumaki to mistake him for an invading curse. Rika retaliates when they corner him 19.
• Gojo blocks Rika’s next attack, and Yuta persuades her to withdraw. Once the misunderstanding is explained, his classmates welcome him 19.

Abandoned Hospital

• Yuta accompanies Akutagawa on a mission where an apparently defeated curse transforms the hospital into its body, trapping them inside 21 22.
• Seeing Akutagawa wounded prompts Yuta to summon Rika deliberately. Unaware that Akutagawa subsequently feigns unconsciousness, he orders Rika to destroy the curse and carries his senior out through the opening she creates 22 23.
• After the rescue, Yuta resolves to stop running from his circumstances and find a way to break the curse. Gojo later explains that accepting and channeling it through a weapon is a path toward freeing both Yuta and Rika 23 25.

HAPINA Shopping Street

• Undertakes live-combat training with Akutagawa and Inumaki under instructions not to summon Rika 30 31.
• Practices against a swarm of fish curses before Inumaki clears the remainder. When Geto’s stronger curse appears, Yuta defeats it through swordsmanship and reinforcement rather than relying on Rika 31 32.

Sister-School Goodwill Event

• Accepts a rule prohibiting Rika’s full manifestation, reasoning that relying on her for everything would undermine his goal of lifting her curse 38.
• Serves as Tokyo’s decoy, drawing five Kyoto students away from the scoring targets. Their pursuit also becomes an assassination attempt ordered by Gakuganji 39 40 41 42.
• Survives their coordinated bombardment and disarms Miwa. Kamo’s attempted reinforcement fails because Maki and Akutagawa have already destroyed the hidden Grade 1 curse 43.
• Returns Miwa’s sword and sets aside his own to fight Todo barehanded. Their duel becomes a training session that culminates in Yuta overcoming his hesitation and achieving Black Flash 44 45 46 47.
