History

Mulian Town and adoption

Wu Yunsu was born to a Golden Core yaomo known as the Gu Woman. His mother attempted to possess him at birth, and he ultimately consumed her to survive. He sheltered in Mulian Town, using her corpse to raise gu and the aura obtained from her flesh and blood to deter predators 80 95 239.

After encountering Chi Yu and Xie Xiyi, he adopted an attractive infant form and feigned helplessness. Xie Xiyi named him Wu Yunsu, which alerted Chi Yu that the infant was the adult cultivator he had already met five hundred years later 71 79 80.

Chi Yu destroyed the Mother Gu that could control him and declared him his godson. He later offered Wu Yunsu a choice: continue preying on others as a demon and be killed by him, or overcome his instincts, cultivate as a human, and become his companion 72 80.

Chi Yu’s offer of enough resources to reach Golden Core moved Wu Yunsu deeply. Although he returned the offered Storage Bag, his use of “Dad” became sincere. When seven siblings tried to recruit him into a campaign to conquer the Demon Realm, he instead helped Chi Yu and Xie Xiyi kill them 94 95 96.

Becoming a human cultivator

Afraid that Chi Yu might leave him behind, Wu Yunsu abruptly completed his human transformation. He lost his cultivation, gained legs, and assumed the appearance of a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old boy. Chi Yu equipped him with protective artifacts and personally taught him to begin cultivating again 141.

After Chi Yu disappeared into a rift in the Tiangang Secret Realm, Wu Yunsu encouraged Xiaoqiu to cultivate so that he might live long enough to meet him again. Wu Yunsu passed the Mind-Certifying Terrace on his first attempt and entered the Bitter Truth Chan Abode 157 159.

Xiaoqiu’s abduction

Wu Yunsu agreed to help Xiaoqiu investigate the apparent connection between Chi Yu’s disappearance, Xuanji’s seclusion, and his own loss of cultivation. He fed demon corpses to his gu despite the danger of demonic blood energy contaminating his human cultivation 160.

When Xiaoqiu was abducted, Wu Yunsu escalated to feeding his gu on cultivators. He admitted consuming the flesh and blood of dozens without killing them, but the practice damaged their cultivation foundations and nearly caused him to succumb to his yaomo nature 162 163 164.

Initially distrustful of outside help, he eventually appealed to Chi Yu’s acquaintances. Their search reached a concealed cave containing Xiaoqiu’s blood and Sumeru Ring, but Xiaoqiu had already been carried away by Duyu and Xiao Jingyu 163 164. Wu Yunsu’s failure to protect him became a source of guilt lasting five hundred years 226.

Five hundred years in the Xuanxiao Immortal Sect

Wu Yunsu joined the Xuanxiao Immortal Sect and performed dirty work for Qingxuan and Taixuzi to earn their trust. Qingxuan imposed a restrictive contract and forced him to acknowledge Taixuzi as his adoptive father. Although associated with the sect, he was excluded from its disciple register and could not study its cultivation method 19 179.

He secretly used gu planted in Taixuzi to exchange and rescue captive Xie Clan members. His access extended only to relatively low-level disciples; the central operations exploiting the clan remained beyond his reach 179 184.

In his first on-page encounter with Chi Yu, Wu Yunsu had orders to capture both him and Xie Xiyi. Instead, he attempted to take Chi Yu away alone, prompting Qingxuan to report his defection. Xie Xiyi attacked him without recognizing their former connection, forcing him to sacrifice most of his gu swarm and escape 20.

When Chi Yu later recognized him, Wu Yunsu apologized for failing to protect Xiaoqiu and explained his clandestine rescues. Chi Yu welcomed him back as his son 178 179. The Immortal Alliance subsequently continued hunting Wu Yunsu under a substantial bounty 200.

Demon Realm captivity and kingship

At Xiaoqiu’s request, Wu Yunsu attempted to reach Chi Yu during the Immortal Sect’s attack on Xie Xiyi. A Tribulation Transcendence cultivator forced him back, and the surrounding formation destroyed his infiltrating gu. He eventually entered a rift into the Demon Realm 237.

Demon Generals captured him and presented him to the Demon Venerable as a beautiful captive. The ruler initially humiliated him, then revealed himself as Wu Yunsu’s surviving elder brother, Ye Shang. He appointed Wu Yunsu his first Demon King but implanted a God-Commanding Gu to enforce obedience 238 239 240.

Wu Yunsu resisted abandoning human cultivation despite Ye Shang’s pressure. After three Demon Generals ambushed him, he used a life-saving gu to attain temporary Mahayana strength and killed all three 240.

While serving Ye Shang, he accompanied Chi Yu to summon Yintian Demon Emperor and helped him gather Nascent Soul Spirits for Xie Xiyi. During the ensuing war, Wu Yunsu urged Chi Yu to escape and shielded him from powerful sword attacks when escape failed 244 247.

Later appearances

After the war, Wu Yunsu returned the shattered pieces of Phantom Lightning to Chi Yu, allowing Xie Xiyi to repair the sword 252.

When Chi Yu prepared to leave the Cultivation World, he entrusted Moonlit Thousand-Mile White to Wu Yunsu. Wu Yunsu wanted to accompany him only if they could continue advancing toward the Immortal Realm, and Chi Yu urged him to remain 261. He later appears beside Chi Yu again and poses with him for photographs 273.

Appearance

  • Adult form: Approximately 1.9 meters tall, with delicate, strikingly beautiful features, faintly purple eyes, and a lean but lightly muscled body 19 178 238.
  • Clothing: Favors revealing dresses, including purple and red outfits, with abundant silver ornaments, armlets, necklaces, chains, and bells 19 160 178.
  • Hair: Wears elaborate braids woven with colored cords, silver beads, and ornaments 19 160.
  • Child forms: Initially has a fair, plump infant upper body and a pale, hairless insect lower body. Chi Yu dresses him in enchanted skirts and later styles his hair into two ribboned buns with a red forehead mark 79 80 83.
  • Chan disciple attire: Drapes the standard blue-green Dharma Robe over his red dress rather than giving up his preferred clothing 160.

Personality

Wu Yunsu is suspicious, calculating, and intensely protective of his own survival. As a child, he deliberately exploits his appearance and pretends to be innocent or frightened to secure Chi Yu’s affection. His apparent helplessness conceals exceptional comprehension and an ability to recognize patterns behind seemingly unrelated dangers 79 80 95 160.

Chi Yu’s unconditional care gives him a lasting attachment to parental affection. His initial performance of filial devotion becomes genuine, and he explicitly credits Chi Yu’s teaching, resources, and kindness with making him the person he becomes 94 160.

He remains jealous and possessive, particularly when others draw Chi Yu’s attention. Nevertheless, he will accept a relationship defined by Chi Yu’s wishes rather than insist on becoming his Dao Companion 179 209 244.

His tenderness toward Chi Yu does not extend indiscriminately to others. He can be cold, vindictive, and brutally violent; his childhood consumption of cultivators’ flesh and blood leaves an enduring affliction that aggravates his demonic tendencies 200 201 238 240.

He takes pride in beauty without treating it as gender-exclusive. He willingly wears dresses, uses cosmetics, and rejects criticism of those choices 97 163.

Abilities & Skills

Innate gu arts

Wu Yunsu inherited the Gu Woman’s abilities and could use gu from birth, long before Qingxuan believed he had learned the technique 96 179.

  • Control and restraint: Gu nurtured with his mother’s heart can control yaomo and human cultivators below Golden Core. He uses them to stop a sibling from unleashing blood energy 96.
  • Covert infiltration: Concealed worms can enter targets without immediate detection. A fragrance from his body dulls the five senses and assists infiltration 96 162.
  • Communication: Wenxin Gu allows him to perceive Xiaoqiu’s thoughts and communicate silently while their cultivation is too low for ordinary divine-sense transmission 159.
  • Monitoring and tracking: Detects Xiaoqiu’s emotional fluctuations through implanted gu and uses a Mother–Child Gu connection to locate Chi Yu nearby 226 240.
  • Refinement: Strengthens worms by feeding them demon corpses or cultivators’ flesh and blood. The resulting demonic blood energy threatens his human cultivation 160 162 164.
  • Contractual limits: Qingxuan’s contract prevents him from planting gu in Immortal Alliance members 180.

Avatars and transformations

  • Operates and speaks through a small black snake while his true body is elsewhere 178 200.
  • Appears as a scorpion and then a snake, and can dissolve into a stream of insects before reforming a human body 182 209.
  • Losing avatars damages his vitality 200.
  • Sufficiently powerful formations can annihilate his gu before they reach their target 237.

Yaomo senses and bloodline

  • Detects approaching demons and distinguishes his siblings through their scent and aura 95 96.
  • Obtains a protective Golden Core aura by consuming his mother’s flesh and blood; it deters weaker demons but also obstructs the group’s demon-hunting efforts 95.
  • His dominant yaomo bloodline makes human cultivation unusually difficult. Loss of control produces fangs, facial markings, and bleeding from his seven orifices 163 164.
  • Full demonic cultivation would increase his strength but severely undermine his prospects of ascending to the Immortal Realm, which he refuses to abandon 240 244 261.

Combat and emergency enhancement

  • Previously defeated Ling Tian so decisively that Ling Tian could not understand how he lost 19.
  • Uses a sword to kill three Demon Generals after a life-saving gu temporarily raises him to Mahayana 240.
  • Blocks powerful sword-intent attacks aimed at Chi Yu during the Demon Realm war 247.

Equipment & Items

  • Palace-shaped magical artifact: Contains rooms, treasures, magical artifacts, and a wardrobe. Left behind during his escape, it comes into Chi Yu’s possession 71 80.
  • Enchanted dress: Automatically adjusts to his size and shape; decorated with silver bells and chains 80.
  • Protective talisman tablets: Supplied by Xie Xiyi when Wu Yunsu serves as bait for his siblings 95.
  • Protective jewelry and artifacts: Given by Chi Yu after his transformation leaves him mortal 141.
  • Bitter Truth Chan Abode Jade Token: Earned by passing the Mind-Certifying Terrace on his first attempt 159.
  • God-Commanding Gu: Implanted by Ye Shang to punish betrayal by refining his body into nourishment. Wu Yunsu plans to remove it by completing a Gu King capable of devouring it; its removal is not confirmed in the supplied passages 240 247.
  • Moonlit Thousand-Mile White: Entrusted to him when Chi Yu prepares to leave the Cultivation World 261.

Relationships

  • Chi Yu — Godfather, teacher, and principal emotional attachment. Wu Yunsu continues to regard him as his father despite their reversed apparent ages after five hundred years 160 178 179.
  • Xiaoqiu — Childhood rival turned cherished companion. Their arguments and Wu Yunsu’s gu pranks coexist with genuine protectiveness; after centuries of separation, he recognizes that Xiaoqiu’s existence brings him joy independently of Chi Yu 145 160 226.
  • Xie Xiyi / Xuanji — Named him, spared his life, and disciplined him. Wu Yunsu fears and dislikes him but recognizes the security his presence provides and acts to protect his relatives for Chi Yu’s sake 71 78 79 160 179.
  • Taixuzi — Forced adoptive father. Wu Yunsu secretly plants gu in him and exploits his position to rescue Xie Clan captives 179.
  • Qingxuan — Manipulative superior who restricts him through a contract and uses him for dirty work 179 180.
  • Ye Shang Demon Venerable — Surviving elder half-brother and coercive ruler. Grants him kingship while attempting to force him into yaomo cultivation 239 240.
  • Gu Woman — Birth mother whose attempted possession and eventual consumption shape his distrust of demonic family ties 80 239.

  • His later silver-adorned clothing is described as leaning toward Miao ethnic dress 273.
