Background / History

Great Xia and Buddhist Cultivation

Xie Xiyi was raised as Great Xia’s crown prince and practiced the Xie Clan’s special cultivation method from childhood. His younger siblings, the fraternal twins Xie Qingjing and Xie Qingning, are four years younger. Although remembered as gentle, clever, and fond of tricks, he repeatedly lost control and hurt people. He was stripped of his position and sent to Zizai Continent 97.

The Xie Clan descended from the God Clan and entered the Haoyuan Realm through the Boundless Sea. Its members originally lacked Spiritual Roots but possessed long lifespans and flesh capable of extending mortal life. Their ancestors developed a bloodline-based cultivation method to survive, linking their cultivation as well as their blood 156 179.

After entering the Buddhist sect, Xie Xiyi changed cultivation methods and advanced rapidly. His exceptional comprehension suited Chan teachings, but his Demonic Heart and Obsessive Heart complicated his cultivation. His attachment to his family formed a contradiction: personally killing them would remove the blood-tie karma, yet would also prevent his cultivation from ever advancing again 38 77 100.

Earlier World Lines and the Supreme Demon Kingdom

In an earlier world line, Xie Xiyi remained in Great Xia, inherited the throne, and became a benevolent ruler. This version initially had no Demonic Heart, Obsessive Heart, or Rebellious Bone. His priorities were his family’s happiness and his subjects’ prosperity rather than ascension 249.

Cultivators from six continents attacked Great Xia after rumors spread about the Xie Clan’s cultivation-enhancing resources. The clan exhausted its preserved divine blood defending itself. Xie Qingjing was eventually refined into Human Pills after refusing to reveal his brother’s whereabouts; his death gave rise to Xie Xiyi’s Demonic Heart 249 250.

Xie Xiyi abandoned the clan’s cultivation method, reforged his body, and infiltrated the immortal sects to avenge his family. Yang Min defeated him and sacrificed him to a divine artifact before that revenge was complete. An Obsessive Heart formed as his flesh dissolved, allowing a remnant consciousness and soul to survive 250.

After centuries of wandering and more than a thousand years of slumber, he awakened and established the Supreme Demon Kingdom, destroying the Haoyuan Realm. He then spent millennia seeking access to the Immortal Realm: Yang Min’s survival there preserved the original Heavenly Dao, preventing Xie Xiyi’s revenge from being complete 250.

The Demon Kingdom’s Xie Xiyi later reveals that the world had already restarted twice. The present Xie Xiyi’s Demonic Heart contains the earlier cycle’s cultivation experience and path of slaughter 223 250.

Appearance

  • Face and build: Exceptionally handsome, with a tall, broad-shouldered, muscular frame, a lean waist, pale skin, and long, strong fingers 3 53 116 271.
  • Eyes: Golden during his time as Senior Brother Xuanji. A temporally displaced version gives those eyes to Chi Yu and is subsequently described with light-brown eyes 38 154.
  • Later height: Chi Yu estimates his post–five-hundred-year appearance at approximately 1.96–1.97 metres, considerably taller than his younger self 177.
  • Ghost mask: Initially wears a blue-faced, fanged mask with sinister red eyes and no eyeholes 4.
  • Beast-head mask: Later replaces it with a shorter-muzzled mask bearing golden horns, black beast pupils, and long red tassels 181.
  • Clothing: Wears loose Luopo Chan Sect ritual robes in his Buddhist period; later favors black clothing, including garments patterned with dark-gold clouds and immortal herbs 116 177 181.
  • Voice: Pleasing and often deceptively gentle. Repeated body changes alter it enough that Chi Yu initially fails to recognize his younger voice 4 249.

Personality

Xie Xiyi is composed, intelligent, and arrogant about his own judgment. Cultivation has usually come easily to him, and his ability to learn quickly reinforces his conviction that his thinking is correct. He enjoys teasing people, finding loopholes, and upsetting established rules 53 82 100 268.

As Xuanji, he dismisses friendship, family affection, and romantic attachment as impediments to the Great Dao, yet does not consistently live by that principle. He worries about his younger brother, trains and protects Chi Yu, and remains deeply affected by his family despite claiming indifference 57 77 225 235.

Under the Demonic Heart’s control, he treats the world as a hunting ground. He toys with enemies because fear, anger, and despair nourish the Demonic Heart. His violence initially follows an instinctive preference for cultivators he despises rather than indiscriminate killing of mortals and weak cultivators 186 192.

Recovering his memories does not restore an entirely separate, innocent Xuanji. He recognizes the Demonic Heart as part of himself and becomes horrified by the harm he inflicted on Chi Yu. His later affection remains intensely possessive, with Love Poison and the Demonic Heart producing jealousy that requires deliberate restraint 216 217 231.

By the ending, he retains his predatory impulses but can choose not to act on them. As Heavenly Dao, he spares Yang Min because their karmic debts are settled, and he treats Chi Yu’s grandparents with particular consideration 270 271.

Abilities & Skills

Forbidden Curses

  • Uses black runes, chains, and talisman rings for restraint, protection, attack, and movement between locations 6 186 194.
  • Places protective curses on Chi Yu. One transfers an attacker’s damage and cultivation to Chi Yu; the curse contains twelve incantations, including lethal ones 17 204.
  • Reverses Taixuzi’s servant contract with his black blood, binding Taixuzi instead 25.
  • Stores curse seals inside Top-Grade Spirit Stones, creating lasting talismans usable by ordinary cultivators 6.
  • Uses captured Nascent Soul Spirits and slain enemies as payment for Forbidden Curses. Prolonged fighting can therefore replenish his resources, though his reserves are not unlimited 224 235 237.
  • Tears open passages connecting the Haoyuan Realm to the Demon Realm and Nine Nether 237.
  • Eventually creates Auspicious Words, the opposite of his black Forbidden Curses 268.

Limits and costs:

  • The Heavenly Dao suppresses Forbidden Curses; divine artifacts benefit from operating within the world’s laws 195.
  • Highly pure divine blood is an exceptional writing medium that can circumvent the Heavenly Dao’s interference 172.
  • He repeatedly fails to master the Time Forbidden Curse, including during an entire year in the Nine Nether Dark River. Even later, he denies possessing the system’s time-and-space Backtracking ability 174 194 223.
  • His improved curse may impose consequences on his past and future selves rather than manifesting immediately 264.

Buddhist Cultivation and Divine Abilities

  • Illusion-Piercing Supernatural Ability: Perceives what lies deepest within people rather than judging their outward appearance. Transplanting his golden eyes grants this ability to Chi Yu 67 154.
  • Buddha Bone: Naturally counters evil spirits, demons, and unorthodox cultivators. A Golden Core demon attempting to possess him is overwhelmed by his Buddha Bone and golden Divine Sense 70 154.
  • Dharma Lotus: Releases a multicolored or white lotus whose fragments induce profound mental stillness, creating openings in battle 168 173.
  • Cessation Dharma Gate: Allows him to kill a Spirit Severing cultivator who had previously fought his combined cultivation to a draw 173.
  • Karmic perception: Sees the thread connecting Chi Yu to a destined secret-realm opportunity 116.
  • Dharma Giving: Uses acts of giving to fill the Buddhist Sect’s Righteous Object 173.

Divine Sense and Spiritual Communion

  • Possesses Divine Sense strong enough to destroy an invading demon’s spirit and overwhelm Chi Yu with an ordinary guqin performance 38 70.
  • Devouring a Nascent Soul Spirit grants access to its memories and emotions; obsessive emotions can also agitate his Demonic Heart 70.
  • Enters Chi Yu’s Spiritual Realm during visualization and Spiritual Communion, eventually imprinting Golden Spiritual Resonance throughout it 104 187.
  • Erases half a month of Chi Yu’s unhappy memories directly from his Spiritual Realm 128.
  • Later shares a heart connection through which Chi Yu can sense emotions beneath his calm exterior 228.

Swordsmanship and Instruction

  • Wields profound sword techniques and sharp Sword Intent, displaying sword-cultivator-level skill despite his Buddhist background 173.
  • Gives Chi Yu precise instructions during combat, including where to concentrate spiritual energy and which forms to use 56.
  • Recognizes that Chi Yu needs a flexible soft sword rather than a rigid blade 56.
  • Trains Chi Yu’s swordsmanship, combat ability, body tempering, and Divine Sense; takes particular pride in the results 127 137 235.

Demonic Heart, Black Mist, and Body Replacement

  • The Demonic Heart feeds on slaughter, destruction, and negative emotions, greatly magnifying his desires 186 217.
  • Black mist blocks attacks and suppressive power from cultivators far above his apparent realm 15 25 210.
  • Shapes the mist into hands or gloves and uses it to hold bodies, objects, and people 4 193 208 235.
  • Changes bodies repeatedly; by the time his childhood memories begin resurfacing, he has changed bodies twice and retained his first body inside the mist 208.
  • Survives the Seven-Kill Absolute Formation by gathering his scattered Nascent Soul Spirit back together 224.

Vulnerabilities:

  • Suffers recurring memory-loss cycles associated with the Love Threads and Love Poison 128 184 204.
  • Carries deadly poison that destroys roughly seventy to eighty percent of his sense of touch 194 204.
  • Can be confined and suppressed within a secret realm controlled by Chi Yu 203 204.

Heavenly Dao Authority

  • Becomes stronger than the Haoyuan Realm’s original Heavenly Dao and regards the realm as an asset under his authority 270.
  • Can perceive events outside Chi Yu’s world before entering its laws and create a Star Vortex passage between worlds 270.
  • Possesses enough power to destroy Yang Min with a gesture, but chooses to spare him 270.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Phantom Lightning / Jade White Spine Sword — A spirit sword forged from a Golden Core cultivator’s spine. Its inherent spirituality enables unity with its master’s mind but prevents it from developing an artifact spirit 4.
  • Ten Thousand Souls Banner — Stores a soul artifact refined from a Nascent Soul cultivator’s spirit 7.
  • Buddhist Sect’s Righteous Object — A prayer-bead object filled through Buddhist practice and Dharma Giving; used alongside Netherworld aura during his attempt at the Time Forbidden Curse 173 174.
  • Buddha Bone sword and finger-bone beads — Offered to Chi Yu by a temporally displaced Xie Xiyi. The sword counters evil beings, while the beads improve the chance of enlightenment 154.
  • Heart’s blood — Offered as a treasure capable of improving constitution and aptitude 154.
  • Guqin — Plays music capable of exposing Chi Yu’s deficient Divine Sense 38.
  • Scented balm — Gives Chi Yu a bottle, causing Chi Yu’s scent to resemble his own 46.
  • Preserved divine blood — Receives the Xie Clan’s carefully preserved supply from his father after moving the clan to another world 264.

Relationships

  • Chi Yu — Initially his sword slave, later his pupil, beloved, and spouse. Their relationship includes protection and teaching, coercive Spiritual Communion and memory manipulation during his instability, and his subsequent request for a chance to atone 7 56 128 187 216 257.
  • Xiaoqiu — A younger companion he trains, scolds, and indulges. Entrusts Xiaoqiu to Chi Yu before seclusion; his Buddha Bone later allows Xiaoqiu to cultivate even while asleep 89 141 264.
  • Xie Chaori — His father and Great Xia’s emperor. Their earlier closeness becomes estrangement; Xie Chaori later gives him the preserved divine blood 134 135 264.
  • The empress — His mother, whose fear of his uncontrolled Demonic Heart damaged their relationship. He keeps earrings intended for her without giving them to her 135 225 249.
  • Xie Qingjing — His younger brother. In an earlier world line, Qingjing dies refusing to betray him; in the present story, enemies exploit their bloodline resonance to pursue Xie Xiyi 184 250.
  • Xie Qingning — His younger sister. Remembers his former gentleness and is hurt by his distance. He ultimately relocates her with the clan despite her objections 97 134 264.
  • Venerable Shangshan — His master, who orders him into cultivation and later holds back while fighting him under the Demonic Heart’s control 141 199 203.
  • Qingxuan — An old adversary associated with his conflict at Luopo and the plot against Great Xia. Qingxuan regards himself as the victor of their confrontation five hundred years earlier 179 210.
  • Taixuzi — A former fellow Buddhist cultivator and later enemy. Xie Xiyi reverses his attempted servant contract 25.
  • Yang Min — The Divine Path protagonist and Chosen Child of Heaven who sacrifices an earlier Xie Xiyi to a divine artifact. Present-world Xie Xiyi ultimately declines to kill him 250 270.
  • Demon Kingdom Xie Xiyi — His earlier-world-line counterpart and the source of the Demonic Heart’s accumulated experience. Grants him power after recognizing the Heavenly Dao’s trap and seeing their family again 223 250.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Chi Yu’s Target and Captor

Chi Yu enters Divine Path with a mission to kill its main villain. The system recommends becoming Xie Xiyi’s closest friend, follower, or beloved to seize his fortune. Instead of the dependable senior brother described in the novel, Chi Yu encounters a masked killer who accepts him as a sword slave 3 7.

Despite displaying only Golden Core cultivation, Xie Xiyi kills nine Nascent Soul cultivators. Yan Tongchen recognizes him as someone who should have remained imprisoned beneath numerous seals in the Nine Nether Dark River 16.

Senior Brother Xuanji

Five hundred years in the past, Chi Yu becomes close to the Buddhist Xuanji. Xie Xiyi teaches him, travels with him and Xiaoqiu, and becomes increasingly attached despite rejecting the value of personal bonds. Chi Yu’s wish to return to Earth exposes his fear of their eventual separation 41 46 57 117.

Love Poison and the Love Threads intensify his possessiveness and memory problems. After demanding that Chi Yu become his wife, he regains control and erases Chi Yu’s memories of the incident. His later return to Great Xia reveals how thoroughly his family’s fear has displaced their former closeness 128 134 135.

The River and the Five-Hundred-Year Divide

Seeking to bring back Chi Yu and Xiaoqiu, Xie Xiyi turns to forbidden techniques he had once rejected. Pursued by powerful cultivators, he enters the Nine Nether Dark River and spends a year trying to write the Time Forbidden Curse. His cultivation and body deteriorate; news conveyed through his bloodline finally drives him out of control 172 173 174.

When Chi Yu encounters him again, Xie Xiyi lives through recurring amnesia and pursues slaughter under the Demonic Heart’s influence. Chi Yu eventually confines him in a secret realm and appeals to the surviving identity of Senior Brother Xuanji 183 186 204.

Recovery and the Immortal Sect Conflict

Xie Xiyi recovers his memories and asks Chi Yu for a chance to atone. He nevertheless retains the Demonic Heart’s desires, making his recovery an integration rather than a return to his former state 216 217 231.

He and Chi Yu rescue captive Xie Clan members while delivering captured demonic cultivators into the Immortal Sect. Tingyun subsequently traps him in a formation powered by immortal power and Forbidden Techniques. As his stored Nascent Soul Spirits run low, Xie Xiyi tears open passages to hostile realms rather than submit 235 237.

Demon Kingdom Power and Marriage

The Demon Kingdom’s Xie Xiyi recognizes the present world as another reset. Although aware that the Heavenly Dao is manipulating him, he heals Chi Yu, removes Tingyun’s curse, and grants his counterpart power 250.

After the merger, Xie Xiyi’s hostility broadens beyond his earlier preference for despised cultivators. He marries Chi Yu, but their wedding night becomes a struggle over Chi Yu’s refusal and the hidden Forbidden Curse preventing consummation 253 257 258.

Battle Against the Heavenly Dao

Xie Xiyi promises Chi Yu not to turn the Haoyuan Realm into a Demon Kingdom and secretly moves the Xie Clan to another world. During the ensuing conflict of laws, the threat of losing his memories—and therefore Chi Yu—teaches him fear 264 268 269.

He becomes the Haoyuan Realm’s new Heavenly Dao, leaves Yang Min alive, and crosses into Chi Yu’s original world. There he meets Chi Yu’s grandparents and begins sharing his modern life, though his possessiveness and violent impulses have not disappeared 268 270 271.
