  • Attachment to his appearance: Takes considerable pride in his original body and looks. His eventual spare body is selected for its resemblance to his original appearance and bearing 172 213.

Personality

Qingxuan’s reserved courtesy conceals a calculating and ruthless temperament. He cultivates favorable impressions among fellow disciples, answers their greetings without appearing servile or arrogant, and uses that reputation to deflect suspicion. When Mingxin publicly accuses him of murdering a fellow disciple, Qingxuan knocks him unconscious and persuades the witnesses that he is merely agitated 143 161 165.

Cultivation and eventual ascension take precedence over religious commitment or moral restraint. Qingxuan explicitly states that he came to Zizai Continent to study rather than take Buddhist vows. He evaluates possession, family connections, and research subjects according to their usefulness, reasoning that sufficiently profitable benefits can make others overlook wrongdoing 155.

He is disciplined, patient, and exceptionally resilient. Even after being crippled, he continues planning against Xie Xiyi and treats the danger to his own life as a calculated gamble. Chi Yu later acknowledges that his endurance, willpower, and resilience greatly exceed those of an ordinary person 170 213.

His affection for Chi Yu is possessive rather than respectful of Chi Yu’s wishes. He prefers the idea of a talented but vulnerable companion who needs protection, resents Xie Xiyi’s role in making Chi Yu independent, and ultimately plans to force dependence by placing Chi Yu’s Nascent Soul Spirit in a mortal body without spiritual roots 152 211.

History

Five Aggregates Sect and Chan Sect Studies

Qingxuan was his master’s first disciple, chosen for his natural talent. Mingxin was that master’s son. When their original sect was destroyed, the master died saving Qingxuan; this debt prevented Qingxuan from simply severing his troublesome relationship with Mingxin 146.

He later passed the Mind-Certifying Terrace and entered the Dao Di Chan Abode, where Lianchi introduced him to Chi Yu, then using the Dharma name Long Aotian. Qingxuan became Chi Yu’s neighbor, visited with gifts, and introduced himself as a talisman master from the Five Aggregates Sect 39 40.

Qingxuan attempted to join Xie Xiyi’s trial team, but Xie Xiyi rejected him outright. Chi Yu’s subsequent suggestions about mass-producing talismans briefly excited Qingxuan, despite his outward dismissal of the idea as impossible 41 43.

City of Ultimate Bliss

During the City of Ultimate Bliss investigation, Qingxuan repeatedly invited Chi Yu to join his team and promised to protect him from Mingxin. He recognized the city’s unnatural cleanliness as a warning that something powerful might be concealed there, then accompanied Chi Yu into the Extreme Bliss Palace 54.

After awakening from the pipa illusion, he killed the performer known as Wanwan, exposing a male cultivator beneath the apparent female form. He identified the palace’s illusions as a means of draining cultivators’ innate spiritual energy 55.

His own techniques could resist the palace’s seductive influence, but he had not yet learned the Chan Sect spells needed to destroy Demon Seeds. Unable to secure Xie Xiyi’s help, he struggled to protect Mingxin and eventually lost him to the red mist. Afterward, he persuaded Mingxin to avoid further conflict with Xie Xiyi while privately resenting Xie Xiyi’s superiority 56 57.

Pursuit of Chi Yu and the Tiangang Conspiracy

While Xie Xiyi was in seclusion, Qingxuan continued approaching Chi Yu with Bodhi Seeds, costly Spirit Fruit, and other gifts. Chi Yu declined or redistributed them rather than encouraging a closer relationship. When these overtures failed, Qingxuan began considering other methods of obtaining him 144 145 147.

Before the Tiangang Secret Realm expedition, Qingxuan planned to procure a low-level Foundation Establishment body for Fu Ze to possess. Keeping Fu Ze’s host weak enough to control was an explicit condition of the plan. In the realm, Qingxuan became jealous of Lianchi’s closeness to Chi Yu; Fu Ze subsequently possessed Lianchi 147 150 155.

Qingxuan later traveled alone with Chi Yu and repeatedly offered protection during an ambush that targeted only Chi Yu. Five hundred years afterward, his response to Chi Yu’s accusations acknowledged that he had wanted to play the rescuing hero 152 211.

He also developed a theory that Great Xia’s exceptional cultivation aptitude came from a hidden reproductive bloodline mechanism. This was his hypothesis, not an established explanation. Seeking experimental evidence, he arranged for Fu Ze to abduct Xiaoqiu, judging Mingxin too unreliable for the task 155 161 163.

Crippling and the Forbidden Curse

Xie Xiyi confronted Qingxuan over Long Junior Brother’s disappearance and Xiaoqiu’s abduction. He defeated Qingxuan, shattered his dantian, destroyed his wrist meridians, and drove a sword through his chest. Lecturer Hong reported that the investigation had found no evidence implicating Qingxuan, and the intervention against Xie Xiyi allowed Qingxuan to survive 168.

Qingxuan then ordered Mingxin to provoke Wu Yunsu into attacking, hoping to eliminate another person connected to Xie Xiyi. After learning that Xie Xiyi had escaped custody, he left Luo Po, intending to use his research into the Xie bloodline to gain entry into a powerful immortal sect on Myriad Firmament Continent 169 170.

Xie Xiyi intercepted him and implanted an offensive Forbidden Curse intended to torment him and consume the cultivation of any body he possessed for five hundred years. Fu Ze subsequently brought Mo Family cultivators to recover him. Neither their assistance nor temporary relief from a snow lotus stopped his original body’s deterioration 171 172 173.

Destruction and Exploitation of Great Xia

Qingxuan allied with major cultivation families of Myriad Firmament Continent to overthrow Great Xia and capture the Xie Clan. His research identified their concern for blood relatives and reluctance to attack without restraint as vulnerabilities. Rather than relocating to Myriad Firmament Continent, he remained on Wangxian Continent with Mingxin and supplied those families with profits from the captives 179.

He developed methods for repeatedly harvesting the Xie Clan’s flesh, blood, bones, and innate aptitude. Their ability to regenerate made continued extraction possible; products associated with this exploitation included the Immortal Alliance’s Thousand Mountains Brew. Despite his extensive research, the clan’s collective silence prevented him from learning that every Xie disciple knew the Forbidden Curse 176 179 214.

Five hundred years after his Chan Sect studies, Qingxuan had become the Immortal Alliance’s Deputy Alliance Leader and the Xuanxiao Immortal Sect’s vice sect master. He and Taixuzi sought to capture Xie Xiyi alive for his jade marrow, although Qingxuan later urged Taixuzi to abandon the capture attempt and seek assistance from Myriad Firmament Continent 18 176 181 210.

Final Confrontation and Death

When Chi Yu visited him after five hundred years, Qingxuan offered him an elder’s position at the Xuanxiao Immortal Sect. Chi Yu instead stabbed him during an embrace and confronted him about the ambush and Xiaoqiu’s suffering. Qingxuan professed his love while Chi Yu’s concealed poison spread through his body 210 211.

Qingxuan defeated Chi Yu in direct sword combat and attempted to kill him so that he could transfer his Nascent Soul Spirit into a dependent mortal host. The attempt triggered Chi Yu’s protective Forbidden Curse, which reproduced Qingxuan’s attack and repeatedly severed his head. Recognizing that resistance was draining his cultivation, constitution, aptitude, lifespan, and fortune, Qingxuan deliberately abandoned his body and escaped as a Nascent Soul Spirit 211 212.

Xie Xiyi strengthened the Fog City curse through Qingxuan’s discarded corpse, then destroyed the Straw Puppet made from it. Qingxuan had already entered a spare body at the Immortal Alliance and was still planning to win Chi Yu when the curse reached him. His replacement body and Nascent Soul Spirit crumbled into powder in front of Taixuzi 213.

Abilities & Skills

Talisman Craft

  • Identifies himself as a talisman master and makes talismans outside his cultivation practice 40.

Swordsmanship

  • Receives praise from Lianchi for outstanding swordsmanship and fighting ability 150.
  • Knows Mingxin’s techniques thoroughly because they trained under the same master, allowing him to neutralize Mingxin’s attacks 165.

Divine Sense and Spiritual Control

  • Secretly examines the papers in Chi Yu’s room without Chi Yu detecting the intrusion 40.
  • Uses spiritual pressure from his escaping Nascent Soul Spirit to immobilize Chi Yu briefly and prevent pursuit 212.

Specialized Cultivation

  • Practices breathing exercises while walking, concealing the extent of his training behind a claim that he cultivates twelve hours daily 40 41.
  • Uses an unnamed special cultivation technique to resist the City of Ultimate Bliss’s seductive influence 56.
  • Lacks Chan Sect Demon Seed–destroying spells during that expedition because he is still tempering his heart 57.

Research and Strategic Planning

  • Studies the distinction between bloodline aptitude and comprehension, recognizing that either exceptional natural endowment or exceptional understanding can support advancement 155.
  • Turns Xie bloodline research into both a military advantage and a system of repeatable resource extraction 179 214.
  • Anticipates Gu-based interference and includes contractual restrictions preventing Wu Yunsu from planting Gu in Immortal Alliance members 180.
  • Identifies the target-funded mechanism of Xie Xiyi’s retaliatory Forbidden Curse during combat, though he cannot ultimately escape its effects 212 213.

  • Lianchi — Fellow Chan Sect student who initially welcomes him. Qingxuan resents his closeness to Chi Yu and later treats his family connections as a resource after Fu Ze possesses him 39 150 155.
  • Xiaoqiu — Abduction victim and subject of Qingxuan’s research into the Xie Clan’s innate constitution 163 169.
  • Wu Yunsu — Distrusts Qingxuan and tries to expose his involvement in Xiaoqiu’s disappearance. Later performs work for Qingxuan and Taixuzi while secretly rescuing Xie captives 163 179.
