Defensive Formations
Mystic Heaven Sword Formation
A Saint-level formation whose power increases substantially when controlled by Chu Kuangren’s Nine-Orifice Exquisite Sword Heart 410.
- Fills the surrounding region with lethal Sword Qi, making the sect difficult to approach 410.
- During the million-strong siege, several Great Saints expend their trump cards to break it 411.
Cloud Sea Wonder Formation
A grand formation established by Chu Kuangren that conceals the entire sect within clouds and mist 391.
- Contains interconnected trapping, confinement, and killing formations 391 417.
- Remains intact after the Mystic Heaven Sword Formation is broken 411.
- Kills numerous Saints and tens of thousands of attackers during the siege; the invading army loses over half its strength before reaching the gates 412 417.
- Continues protecting the sect during its withdrawal from public affairs. The Baleful Daoist Seed fails to break through after a day and a night 430 462.
- Is not completely infiltration-proof: Liu Yiqing and Yin Li enter by secretly following Junyi and Jin Feiyan through it 433.
History
Chu Kuangren’s Rise
The sect’s established Sword Dao heritage makes Chu Kuangren’s awakening especially significant. His Nine-Orifice Exquisite Sword Heart is the first supreme Dao Body in the sect’s history, and its manifestation draws swords—including Sage Artifacts—from Sword Mountain to his courtyard. Venerable Xuanqi takes him as his disciple and appoints him Chief Disciple 2 3.
Before Chu Kuangren’s leadership, the sect faces challenges from rival Heavenly Prides. Gu Changge defeats Nangong Huang in three punches while Chu Kuangren remains in seclusion. During the dispute over Bright Moon Saint’s body, Chu Kuangren intervenes after Lei Ao attacks Nangong Huang and claims the body for the sect 22 61.
Chu Kuangren’s achievements increasingly shape the sect’s reputation. A hundred thousand disciples welcome his return after the Demon Calamity, and his later defeat of five Young Emperors convinces the elders that the sect’s prospects have risen sharply 112 120.
Succession and Internal Development
Chu Kuangren formally becomes the tenth Sect Leader after returning with a Divine Phoenix. He vows to protect and strengthen the sect, while Sword Mountain responds with flying swords and resonating sword intents 193.
His intervention on Murong Xuan’s behalf, including the deaths of the Murong Family’s two Saints, alarms neighboring traditions. Rather than exploit that prestige through immediate expansion, he orders stricter discipline among disciples and subordinate forces. The sect spends the following year strengthening its members through training 215 224 225 227.
First City Tournament
The tournament establishes that the sect’s strength extends beyond its leader. Lan Yu earns all 156 available points in the Demon Beast round, while Murong Xuan and Nangong Huang defeat prominent opponents in the arena matches 288 290.
Five rival traditions then combine their twenty-five representatives against the sect’s five-member team. Lan Yu, Murong Xuan, Nangong Huang, Junyi, and Jin Feiyan defeat them despite suffering injuries. The sect ultimately wins the tournament against the Heavenly King Palace 297 300 308.
Afterward, Chu Kuangren insists that unfair treatment of his disciples requires a public apology rather than merely financial compensation, declaring loyalty and justice more important than profit 311.
Netherworld Infiltration
Chu Kuangren identifies newly promoted True Disciple Zhao Tianlong as a Netherworld spy. Instead of executing him, he orders Zhao to continue reporting under the sect’s direction, allowing it to feed selected information to its enemies 335.
After a subsequent poisoning plot causes no serious losses, Chu Kuangren rewards Zhao with access to one of the sect’s twelve Sage Laws 366.
Siege by the Unknowable Places
Several Unknowable Places announce their intention to destroy the sect, attracting hostile traditions such as the Linghu Family, Overlord Body Sacred Clan, Thunder Falcon Clan, Heavenly King Palace, Eight Desolations Palace, and Overseas Thirty-Six Islands 403 404.
Chu Kuangren allows unwilling disciples to collect spirit stones and leave. A little over ten thousand remain—fewer than one-tenth of the original membership—and pledge to share the sect’s fate. Many subordinate forces also sever ties, although the Heavenly Feather Sect and Snowwind Sect send reinforcements 405 406 407.
The attackers arrive with a million-strong army and numerous Saints. Although they break the Mystic Heaven Sword Formation, the Cloud Sea Wonder Formation inflicts enormous losses before they reach the gates. The siege ultimately ends in the attackers’ defeat, with six Saint Kings and a Quasi-Emperor among the dead 409 411 417 430.
Seclusion and Recovery
After the battle, Chu Kuangren is restricted by the Heavenly Punishment Seal. He orders the sect to spend its resources within ten years on strengthening its loyal disciples and elders. Hidden behind the Cloud Sea Wonder Formation, the sect becomes comparable to a forbidden land 430.
This investment produces rapid progress and several new Quasi-Saints. Nevertheless, the infiltration by Liu Yiqing and Yin Li exposes the continuing gap between the sect’s ordinary defenders and exceptional outside Heavenly Prides 435 436.
Later, the Baleful Daoist Seed fails to penetrate the formation and instead murders former disciples to provoke a response. Elder Ruyan refuses to endanger the remaining membership for people whose ties to the sect have already ended 462.
Emperor Road and Emperor-Level Status
Chu Kuangren and Lan Yu lead Nangong Huang, Murong Xuan, Junyi, Shang Qingxue, and other Daoist Seeds toward Emperor Road aboard the Mirage Tower. The Divine Phoenix remains behind to guard the sect 497.
Chu Kuangren, Lan Yu, and Murong Xuan return as Emperors, establishing the sect as an Emperor-level Daoist Tradition. Murong Xuan’s subsequent wedding to Yang Xiyun draws leaders, Quasi-Emperors, and gifts from across Firmament Star 652 653 654.
Under the Emperors’ territorial division, Mystic Heaven Dao Province extends one hundred thousand li in every direction from the sect—the smallest province. Despite this restriction, the Divine Phoenix’s presence brings frequent discoveries of treasures within its territory 660 680.
Conflict with the Deities
The Flame Main God and Storm Main God attack the sect through Divine Bodies, intending to slaughter disciples and use survivors against Chu Kuangren. He intervenes, initially restraining his power to avoid damaging the grounds, before revealing his Heavenly Venerable cultivation 697 698.
During a later divine assault, Chu Hong, Lan Yu, and the returned Gu Linglong defend the sect. Chu Hong, now an Upper Heavenly Venerable, repels Deities who breach its barrier 803.
Foundation of Mystic Heaven City
Chu Kuangren entrusts Elder Ruyan with founding a nation, supported by Gu Linglong and the Dao Lords. By the enthronement ceremony, the area within a million-mile radius of the sect has become Mystic Heaven City, the empire’s capital, with the sect at its center 820 829.
Relationships
- White Lotus Sect — Ally and supporter of Chu Kuangren. Its Saint personally comes to help during the encirclement crisis, without bringing the sect’s forces 226 406.
- Qingyun Dynasty — Allied tradition. Empress Linglong refuses to risk its people by sending an army during the crisis, instead relinquishing her throne to support Chu Kuangren personally as his wife 226 406.
- Heavenly Feather Sect and Snowwind Sect — Subordinate forces that remain loyal during the siege and send reinforcements despite their limited strength 406 407.
- Linghu Family — Longstanding Sword Dao rival, particularly hostile because of Venerable Xuanqi’s past defeat of Linghu Hong. Later joins the campaign to annihilate the sect 168 404.
- Murong Family — Rival Sword Dao tradition. Chu Kuangren’s intervention for Murong Xuan results in the deaths of its two Saints 168 211 215.
- Unknowable Places — Six participate in the great siege. Their defeat and uncertainty about Chu Kuangren’s remaining methods deter another immediate attack 430 441.
- Mystic Heaven Religion — A related but distinct religious organization formed from the former White Lotus Sect’s faith, worshipping Chu Kuangren as the Mystic Heaven True God. Its name derives from his connection to the Mystic Heaven Sect 683 686.
- Myriad Gods Cult and hostile Deities — Enemies of the sect and Mystic Heaven Religion; attack both over their rejection of the Deities’ religious authority 697 698 803.
