Background

Mu En is the leader of Shrek Academy’s Sea God Pavilion and Yan Shaozhe’s teacher. His commitment to Martial Soul cultivation is rooted in more than two centuries of life and Shrek’s ten-thousand-year inheritance. Even after recognizing the military importance of Soul Tools, he initially refuses to place them above Martial Soul cultivation 4 7.

Before Su Xian’s arrival, Mu En arranged for Zhang Lexuan to become the future bride of his great-great-grandson, Bei Bei. When Su Xian condemns the arrangement, Mu En privately acknowledges that he wanted to secure an exceptional protector for Bei Bei, while maintaining that he also genuinely cared for Zhang Lexuan 14.

Appearance

Mu En is an elderly, stooped man with clouded eyes and a beard. He walks with a cane and adjusts his posture and voice to portray a kindly mountain village chief 2 9 29.

  • Village disguise: Mud-spattered farmer’s clothing and coarse rural dress 14.
  • Disguised voice: An aged, hoarse voice with a thick rural or southwestern Mandarin accent 1 2 14.
  • Habitual accessories: A cane, a battered notebook, and charcoal pencils used during Su Xian’s lessons 11 17.

Personality

Mu En usually remains composed when other Shrek leaders lose their tempers. He restrains Xuan Zi and Yan Shaozhe rather than allowing their anger to endanger Su Xian, and treats predictions of disaster as opportunities to change events rather than unavoidable fate 2 3 4.

His loyalty to Shrek makes him both conservative and capable of drastic change. Initially, he doubles Soul Tool funding while defending Martial Soul orthodoxy. After hearing that Shrek’s future destruction would kill millions, he abandons that position and becomes willing to punish even his own disciple for obstructing reform 7 15 16.

He is an eager student despite his age and rank. He records unfamiliar vocabulary, asks for further physics instruction, and admits that Shrek’s elders have become rigid in their thinking. However, his pursuit of knowledge is also calculating: he deliberately preserves Su Xian’s false understanding of his surroundings so Shrek can continue obtaining unguarded information 8 11 18 30 33.

Abilities & Skills

Limit Douluo Cultivation

Mu En is a Level 99 Limit Douluo whose pressure commands obedience from Shrek’s senior experts 4 5.

  • Releases an intimidating aura when warning Bei Bei and Xu Sanshi not to expose their identities 5.
  • Uses a gentle light aura to suppress Xuan Zi’s destabilized emotions 3.
  • Moves out of sight almost instantly and uses Soul Power to bring academy leaders to an emergency meeting 18.

Soul Power Control

Mu En demonstrates precise control for concealment, communication, and moving others 1 2.

  • Soundproof barriers: Seals confidential conversations and expands a barrier to include additional listeners 2 7.
  • Voice transmission: Privately instructs Xuan Zi and Yan Shaozhe without alerting Su Xian 1 4.
  • Moving others: Carries Xuan Zi and Yan Shaozhe out of Su Xian’s room with a controlled surge of Soul Power 2.

Spiritual Power

Mu En assigns his spiritual power to personally cover and guard the restricted area around Su Xian’s cabin 29.

  • Protective coverage: Designates everything within a ten-li radius as a first-class military restricted zone 29.
  • Currency authentication: Confirms that he can imprint fine threads of his spiritual power onto banknotes. Su Xian proposes this as an anti-counterfeiting measure; the passage establishes feasibility rather than showing completed notes 28.

Martial Soul Fusion

Mu En has used a Martial Soul Fusion Skill with Long Xiaoyao. He originally understood their fusion as complementary strengths overcoming the rejection between light and dark attributes 8.

  • Su Xian’s explanation of energy conservation leads him to reconsider whether those energies can instead merge and transform through a particular mechanism 8.
  • The provided account does not name the fusion skill or describe its combat effects 8.

Disguise and Improvisation

Mu En sustains the village-chief role through improvised explanations and vocabulary learned from Su Xian 9 14.

  • Explains Su Xian’s isolation through washed-out roads, damaged communications, and medical restrictions 1 9.
  • Invents village identities for Qian Duoduo and Cai Mei’er 9 14.
  • Attributes Yan Shaozhe’s destructive outbursts to a wild boar near a pigpen 10 12.
  • Coordinates an artificial village, disguised disciples, and simulated rural sounds to make the deception convincing 18 20.

Equipment & Items

  • Cane — Used for support and to punctuate commands; one strike cracks the ground as he orders the assault on the Death Messenger’s base 6.
  • Battered notebook and charcoal pencils — Used to record modern terminology, physics concepts, and industrial proposals 11 17.
  • Farmer’s clothing — Maintains his identity as Niulai Village’s elderly chief 14.

Relationships

  • Su Xian — Protected guest, source of future knowledge, and science teacher. Mu En personally brings him nourishing meals, maintains the village deception, and eventually classifies both his existence and everything he has said as Shrek’s highest-level secret 3 17 29.
  • Yan Shaozhe — Direct disciple. Mu En repeatedly restrains his anger, challenges his departmental favoritism, and makes clear that their teacher–disciple bond will not excuse resistance to reform 4 5 16.
  • Zhang Lexuan — Entrusts her with a village role because she can ask more probing questions than the younger students. Later appoints her Sea God Pavilion Special Envoy to implement appraisals and remove corrupt or obstructive teachers 11 16.
  • Bei Bei — Great-great-grandson. Mu En arranged his betrothal to Zhang Lexuan and later orders him to study under Su Xian while disguised as a village child 5 14.
  • Xuan Zi — Senior Shrek colleague whom Mu En restrains when anger or emotional instability threatens their secrecy and Su Xian’s safety 1 2 3.
  • Xian Lin’er — Supports her demand for restored rare-metal allocations, doubles her department’s resources, and instructs her to support Qian Duoduo’s research 6 7.
  • Qian Duoduo — Collaborator in Soul Tool development and financial reform. Mu En assigns him to prepare the first banknotes for the proposed pilot bank 7 28.
  • Long Xiaoyao — Martial Soul Fusion partner whose light–dark interaction Mu En reexamines after learning about energy conservation 8.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Su Xian’s Arrival and the Village-Chief Deception

After Su Xian survives spatial turbulence, Mu En learns that the young man carries a book containing otherwise inaccessible information about Tang San and Shrek’s history. He rejects Xuan Zi’s proposal to search Su Xian’s soul, fearing that possible Divine Realm restrictions could destroy the academy 1.

Instead, Mu En follows Su Xian’s belief that he is recovering in an impoverished mountain village. Acting as its chief, he draws out information about the future while concealing Shrek’s identity. When Xuan Zi becomes dangerously unstable under Su Xian’s criticism, Mu En removes him before his Soul Power can harm the room’s unprotected occupant 1 2.

Preventive Action and Initial Reform

Mu En argues that knowing about a future disaster gives Shrek a chance to prevent it. After hearing that the Death Messenger would kill Yao Haoxuan and cripple Chen Zifeng during a student mission, he orders Yan Shaozhe to lead elite teachers from both departments against the base without holding back 3 6.

His first institutional changes remain limited. He restores the Soul Tool Department’s rare-metal quota, doubles its resource allocation, and requires Inner Court disciples to take basic Soul Tool courses, but still declares Martial Soul cultivation Shrek’s foundation. He also orders an investigation into Huo Yuhao so the academy can begin cultivating him early 6 7.

Science Lessons and the Purge

Mu En initially approaches science as a possible cultivation system. Su Xian’s explanation of energy conservation changes his understanding of cultivation and Martial Soul Fusion, prompting him to request further lessons and begin taking extensive notes 4 8 11.

The decisive break with orthodoxy comes when Su Xian describes Shrek City’s destruction ten thousand years later by two Level Twelve God-Slaying Fixed Soul Cannon Shells. Mu En weeps over the predicted civilian deaths and resolves that preserving tradition cannot justify allowing the academy and city to perish 15.

He authorizes Zhang Lexuan to introduce performance appraisals and expel idle, corrupt, and anti-reform Martial Soul Department teachers. Although he accepts a gradual approach to avoid immediate internal collapse, he threatens severe punishment for senior figures who shield offenders. By the subsequent financial crisis, Yan Shaozhe reports having dismissed forty-five senior instructors 16 23.

Construction of Niulai Village

When Su Xian insists on leaving his courtyard and teaching a full class, Mu En convenes an emergency meeting rather than reveal the truth. He orders high-ranking Soul Masters to build shabby houses and a village school overnight, assigns disciples to play residents, and directs Qian Duoduo to reproduce tractor and loudspeaker sounds 18.

The completed setting allows Shrek’s experts and students to attend Su Xian’s lessons openly under false identities. Lessons on the universe make Mu En reconsider how narrow Shrek’s territorial ambitions and internal rivalries appear beside a civilization seeking the stars 19 20 21 22.

Financial Reform and Secrecy

Industrial plans encounter a blockade by merchant associations and established families, leaving Shrek near bankruptcy. Mu En opposes simply seizing their assets because doing so would destroy the academy’s reputation, and joins the others in presenting the crisis to Su Xian as a role-playing scenario 23 25 26.

Su Xian’s proposals lead Mu En to approve a limited Sea God Pavilion Bank pilot in Shrek City. He orders preparations for banknotes and treasury security, sets its opening for the following morning, and accepts responsibility for the risks 27 28.

Recognizing the danger of outsiders discovering Su Xian’s knowledge, Mu En then imposes the academy’s highest secrecy classification and places the cabin’s surrounding area under his personal spiritual protection 29.

Scientific Education and the Challenge to Soul Master Rule

Mu En approves compiling pinyin for an initial trial in the Inner Court’s classified records. He later orders compulsory mathematics, physics, and chemistry courses for the Outer Court beginning the next month, making basic science examinations a requirement for Inner Court admission. To obtain textbooks, he proposes systematically recording Su Xian’s explanations 30 33.

His commitment is challenged again when Su Xian argues that industrialization requires ending Soul Masters’ monopoly on power and expanding commoner education. Mu En is left shaken by the possibility that the privileged order he believed protected continental peace is itself obstructing civilization’s development 34.
