Background / History

Life at the Lake of Life

Xiao Wu grew up in the Star Dou Great Forest alongside Da Ming and Er Ming, whom she regards as her younger brothers. Her mother was killed before the events shown, leaving Xiao Wu with lasting guilt over her inability to protect her 66 67.

After Xiao Wu takes human form, the Celestial Screen makes entering human society especially dangerous: any public revelation of her identity could expose her to hunters seeking her Soul Ring and Soul Bone. Da Ming urges her to remain at the Lake of Life with him and Er Ming. She understands the danger but resents the confinement, particularly because she cannot cultivate without contact with humans 10.

Celestial Screen: Human Life and the Nuoding Plague

In the later storyline displayed by the Celestial Screen, Xiao Wu spends six years in the human world and graduates from West Sea Academy 25 83.

She explains that family matters delayed her intended registration at Nuoding Academy. By the time she approached Nuoding City, the plague had already spread, and Spirit Hall and city authorities stopped her several hundred li away. Nevertheless, she saw infected people whose bodies were rotting while they remained conscious. Recalling them makes her nauseated, and even the smell of honey water triggers a violent reaction 27.

Meeting Li Shaobai

Li Shaobai intervenes when Sea Soul Masters surround Xiao Wu. Their leader hints that she is not human and delivers a threatening message about a rabbit being skinned before withdrawing. Xiao Wu denies any association with them; when Li Shaobai remains suspicious, she produces her Spirit Hall Soul Master certification and points to her monthly subsidies as evidence of her ordinary human identity 25 26.

The two meet again while arranging transportation to the Star Dou Great Forest. During a stop in Suotuo City, Dai Mubai harasses her outside a bookstore. Xiao Wu attacks him, and Li Shaobai intervenes before the confrontation escalates. She subsequently helps Li Shaobai search for a sword-controlling Soul Master and challenges his habit of belittling his own talent 26 28 29 30.

At the forest, Xiao Wu tries to explain her destination by claiming that her younger brothers are hunting Soul Rings nearby. Li Shaobai recognizes the poor lie but does not press her. He gives her his complete, signed collection of Lanling Xiaoxiaosheng’s novels and advises her to remain in the forest 36.

Beast Tide and Exposure

During the beast tide, Xiao Wu saves Li Shaobai after he loses consciousness. Da Ming and Er Ming die, leaving her convinced that she has lost her home. She vows to grow stronger and avenge both her family’s killers and the Beast God, whom she blames for allowing their deaths 66 67.

Li Shaobai spends seven days carrying her through gaps in the forest’s blockade. Their escape is disrupted by Priest, who announces that everyone surrounding the forest will learn her identity after 666 breaths. Forced to retreat toward the Lake of Life, they face Soul Hunting Groups, academy forces, and other pursuers seeking her hundred-thousand-year rewards 68 69 70 71.

Xiao Wu repeatedly asks Li Shaobai to abandon her rather than sacrifice his future. Against Zhao Wuji, she even claims that she had only been using him, hoping to make him leave. His refusal to surrender her becomes central to his recognition that protecting her is a wish of his own, rather than a duty imposed by others 70 72 73.

Spirit Hall Confrontation and Sacrifice

After Chrysanthemum Douluo and Ghost Douluo immobilize the pair, Bi Shuo offers Li Shaobai a duel with their freedom at stake. Li Shaobai wins, but Bibi Dong arrives and overrides Bi Shuo’s promise. She orders Xiao Wu captured, intending her Soul Ring for her brother 76 79 83 84 85.

Li Shaobai attempts to create an escape opening, but Khorne’s blessing drives him into indiscriminate slaughter. His grip crushes Xiao Wu’s hand, and she remains dragged along as he fights Bibi Dong. Xiao Wu recognizes Bibi Dong as her mother’s murderer, yet her concern for Li Shaobai outweighs the satisfaction of seeing her enemy attacked 86 88 91.

Unable to restore him by calling his name, Xiao Wu burns her life force, kisses him, and offers everything to an unknown deity in exchange for his survival. He briefly regains himself before falling unconscious. Her body dissolves into a Hundred Thousand Year Soul Ring, but the ring shatters amid competing divine powers. Within Li Shaobai’s consciousness, a purple hand gathers her essence into a tiny rabbit and carries it away; no restoration is shown in the supplied events 92.

Appearance

  • Face and eyes: Soft, rosy cheeks and red eyes, frequently emphasized during emotional scenes 25 75.
  • Hair: Wears her hair in a ponytail 26.
  • Clothing: Associated with pink clothing, white stockings, and high-heeled shoes 26 36.
  • Rabbit features: Wears a rabbit-ear hair ornament; her Martial Soul Possession also produces rabbit ears 36 83.
  • Build: Described as having long legs and a slender waist 28 29.

Personality

Xiao Wu is proud, outspoken, and quick-tempered. She threatens Sea Soul Masters despite being outmatched and attacks Dai Mubai immediately after his harassment. Her insistence on calling herself “Sister Xiao Wu” reflects the seniority she claims over others, including humans whose apparent age resembles her own 25 29 67.

Her enthusiasm for novels shapes her expectations of people. She is genuinely surprised that Li Shaobai knows how to bribe arena staff because it contradicts the aloof, naïve genius archetype she expects from fiction. Despite her own limited cultivation, she refuses to accept his description of himself as ordinary and presses him to develop confidence and personal desires 30 68.

Beneath her bravado, Xiao Wu is deeply affected by bereavement and her inability to protect others. She repeatedly blames her weakness for her family’s deaths and Li Shaobai’s injuries. Her loyalty is reciprocal: she helps him because he helped her, saves him during the beast tide, and ultimately gives up her life rather than watch another person she loves die 30 66 67 71 92.

Abilities & Skills

Human Transformation and Cultivation

Xiao Wu retains the identity and sacrificial potential of a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast while cultivating in human form 10 66 92.

  • Requires contact with human presence to cultivate 10.
  • Possesses a Spirit Hall-issued Soul Master certification and receives monthly subsidies while living among humans 26.
  • Her human-form cultivation remains far below her former hundred-thousand-year cultivation: she cannot defeat Li Shaobai as a Soul Ancestor or keep pace with his escape speed 26 71.

Rabbit Martial Soul and Close Combat

Xiao Wu activates Martial Soul Possession when attacking Dai Mubai and uses a fast, direct flying kick 29.

  • Rabbit ears manifest during possession and visibly droop with her emotions 83.
  • She is not a support-type Soul Master and cannot provide Li Shaobai with enhancement abilities 71.
  • At Soul Grandmaster level, she cannot clearly follow the exchanges between Li Shaobai and Bi Shuo 79 83.

Life-Burning Sacrifice

Xiao Wu can burn her blood, life, and hundred thousand years of cultivation to form a Hundred Thousand Year Soul Ring 92.

  • Her sacrifice releases red-purple radiance and a spreading red light that brings the surrounding scene to a standstill 92.
  • The stillness cannot restrain the rampaging Li Shaobai, whose blessing grants resistance to control 92.
  • Through a deep kiss and an appeal to an unknown deity, she briefly restores his consciousness 92.
  • Divine interference shatters the resulting Soul Ring before it can provide the anticipated benefit 92.

  • Her mother — Deceased family member whose death remains a source of guilt. Xiao Wu identifies Bibi Dong as her killer 66 91.
