Background / History

Shrek Academy and the Teaching Wager

At Shrek Academy, Xiao Wu shares a room with Ning Rongrong. When Yu Xiaogang accepts a three-year teaching contest against Lu Ning, Xiao Wu and Tang San become the students whose results will be measured against Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing 2 8.

Xiao Wu soon resents the exhausting physical training. Seeing Ning Rongrong return clean and cheerful from an outing while she is covered in sweat and mud, she questions the difference between their schedules. Tang San defends Yu Xiaogang’s methods, and Yu Xiaogang responds by adding another half hour of training. Xiao Wu later asks Ning Rongrong to speak to Lu Ning about allowing her to join his students instead 11 12.

Yu Xiaogang sends Xiao Wu and Tang San to the Soul Fighting Arena as part of his plan to replenish the academy’s finances. Confident in Tang San’s winning streak, she bets all their private savings on his match against Zhu Zhuqing. Zhu Zhuqing wins, and the group returns without any winnings 23 30 31 32.

Departure and Return to the Forest

Xiao Wu reluctantly leaves Shrek with Tang San and Yu Xiaogang, saying farewell to Zhu Zhuqing before following them. She and Tang San temporarily join the Imperial Fighting Team for its match against Shrek, which ends when Yu Xiaogang concedes 40 41 43.

Tang Hao’s subsequent appearance threatens to expose her Soul Beast identity. Rather than kill her, he orders her back to the Star Dou Great Forest and takes Tang San away for personal instruction. Xiao Wu leaves after a reluctant final glance at Tang San 44 45.

She spends roughly a year in the forest with Da Ming and Er Ming. Although protected there, she finds its isolation unbearable after experiencing human society. She argues against their distrust of humans, citing a Soul Master she knew who willingly gave away a Soul Bone 78 79.

Confrontation with Lu Ning

When Lu Ning enters the forest after escaping Tang Hao, Xiao Wu is delighted to see a familiar face. Her excitement turns to suspicion when she wonders whether he has killed Tang San. After his denial, she invites him to the Core Area, with Da Ming and Er Ming blocking his departure 79.

Xiao Wu insists that Lu Ning remain both to keep her company and to prevent him from threatening Tang San. She refuses to return to human society until she can conceal her own identity. When Lu Ning resists, she orders Er Ming to throw him into the lake, provoking a fight 81.

Lu Ning turns the confrontation against her by holding his sword to her neck. Xiao Wu breaks the stalemate by arguing that continued fighting will cost lives and announcing that she wants to leave with him. Da Ming reluctantly permits their departure 82 83.

Outside the forest, Lu Ning threatens to use her as his seventh Soul Ring. Dugu Bo also recognizes her identity and treats her as a valuable source of Soul Rings and Soul Bones. Nevertheless, they take her back to Shrek, with Dugu Bo sealing her Soul Power source to help conceal her from other Titled Douluos 83.

Return to Shrek and Northern Journey

At Shrek, Xiao Wu reunites with Ning Rongrong. She explains Yu Xiaogang’s rejection by Heaven Dou Royal Academy and Tang Hao’s intervention, but hides her Soul Beast identity and describes her return with Lu Ning as a coincidence. Ning Rongrong welcomes her and explains the academy’s changes 84.

Lu Ning subsequently keeps Xiao Wu under house arrest. With little else to occupy her, she cultivates diligently. He eventually brings her on his journey to the Far North because the growing number of Titled Douluos near Heaven Dou City makes her continued stay dangerous; he also regards her as a fallback Soul Ring if the expedition fails 120 129.

During the journey, Xiao Wu persuades Tai Long to pay for an extravagant restaurant meal, becomes close friends with Huo Wu, and helps Lu Ning maintain his deception before a suspicious mercenary group. After entering the Far North, she fights an Ice Sword Tiger alongside Lu Ning and Shui Bing’er 121 122 125 127 129.

The cold takes a toll on her, and she falls ill during the expedition. During the White Disaster, she and Shui Bing’er remain at a guesthouse while Lu Ning returns to confront the Ice Empress for training 130 135.

Appearance

Xiao Wu has dark hair, pink eyes, long legs, and a preference for pink clothing. When she returns to Shrek after her time in the forest, her face is described as noticeably more mature 2 78 84.

  • Rabbit-ear ornament: Worn with her short pink dress in the Star Dou Great Forest 78.
  • Early academy clothing: Pink bunny pajamas 2.
  • Travel clothing: A pink-and-white long dress with white stockings 120.
  • Northern clothing: Changes into warmer autumn clothing on reaching the Northern Border, though she still struggles with the cold 124 128.

Personality

Xiao Wu is lively, curious, and strongly dependent on companionship. Forest life frustrates her not because it lacks safety, but because she misses human conversation and new experiences. After prolonged confinement, she quickly becomes talkative and enthusiastic about restaurants and roadside attractions 78 79 120 121.

Her attachment to Tang San can make her suspicious and controlling. She briefly suspects Lu Ning of killing him and later insists on detaining Lu Ning partly to protect Tang San. However, she can also recognize when stubbornness will cause disaster, persuading Da Ming to end the confrontation rather than risk everyone’s lives 79 81 83.

She is outspoken and mischievous: she complains about unfair training, draws Tai Long into paying her bill, and interrupts the mercenaries’ questioning to protect Lu Ning’s cover. Her belief that good humans exist remains firm despite Da Ming and Er Ming’s warnings 11 78 121 129.

Abilities & Skills

Soul Beast Reincarnation

  • Possesses the identity and value of a hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast despite her human appearance 44 83.
  • Obtains Soul Rings through her reincarnation rather than needing to hunt Soul Beasts 129.
  • Can be identified by Titled Douluos unless adequately concealed; this makes travel through human society dangerous 44 81 120.
  • Recognizes the Blue Silver Emperor as a Soul Beast with a bloodline far superior to ordinary Blue Silver Grass 83.

Third Soul Skill: Teleportation

  • Can use her third Soul Skill to teleport 82.
  • It does not guarantee escape: when Lu Ning locks onto her with his sword attack, she cannot evade the threat despite wanting to activate it 82.

Eight-Stage Throw

  • A close-range throwing technique used against the five-thousand-year Ice Sword Tiger 128 129.
  • Grabs the tiger by its tail and repeatedly slams it into the ground, severely injuring it before Shui Bing’er delivers the finishing attack 129.

Deception and Improvisation

  • Uses Tai Long’s attraction to persuade him to pay a restaurant bill exceeding one hundred Gold Soul Coins 121 122.
  • Helps divert questions about Lu Ning’s concealed Soul Rings by demanding recognition for her own strength and belittling his supposed reliance on brute force 129.

Relationships

  • Tang San — Her principal romantic attachment, whom she calls “Third Brother.” She leaves Shrek with him and remains emotionally devoted to him after their separation 40 45 81 86.
  • Ning Rongrong — Former roommate and close academy friend. Xiao Wu envies her easier training schedule, while Ning Rongrong later welcomes her back and keeps her company 2 11 84 86.
  • Lu Ning — Classmate turned captive, captor, and traveling companion. Xiao Wu first tries to detain him in the forest; he reverses their positions, threatens to harvest her Soul Ring, and later takes her north. Their increasing banter does not erase the coercive circumstances of their journey 79 81 83 120 121.
  • Da Ming / Sky Azure Bull Python — Protective forest companion who distrusts humans and opposes her departure. She persuades him to let her leave rather than prolong the fight with Lu Ning 78 83.
  • Er Ming / Titan Giant Ape — Affectionate protector who calls her “Sister Xiao Wu,” carries her on his shoulder, and readily follows her instructions 78 79 81.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Former instructor whose training she questions. She nevertheless continues training under him alongside Tang San and represents his side of the teaching wager 8 11 38.
  • Tang Hao — Tang San’s father. His ability to expose her identity frightens her; he spares her but orders her back to the forest 44 45.
  • Dugu Bo — Recognizes her Soul Beast identity and initially discusses her value as cultivation material. He also provides concealment for her return to human society 83.
  • Huo Wu — Becomes a close friend during Lu Ning’s half-month training stay in the northern valley 125.
  • Shui Bing’er — Fellow traveler in the Far North; cooperates with Xiao Wu against the Ice Sword Tiger and stays with her during Lu Ning’s later training excursion 129 135.
