Background

Tang San has lived two lives. In his previous life, he belonged to the Tang Sect, whose hidden weapons, poison knowledge, and secret cultivation arts remain central to his abilities. His current-life background includes growing up in Holy Soul Village and becoming Yu Xiaogang’s student at Shrek Academy 1 13 20.

Before Tang Hao’s selection as an explorer, Tang San knew his father chiefly as a dispirited man who drank and forged metal. The sky-screen broadcast reveals that Tang Hao is actually the level-96 Clear Sky Douluo, possessing nine Soul Rings, including a Hundred Thousand Year Soul Ring 11.

Personality

Tang San is observant and calculating, but his judgment is repeatedly distorted by pride and loyalty. He privately recognizes weaknesses in Yu Xiaogang’s explanations while continuing to endorse them publicly. He also notices threats that his companions dismiss, inwardly calling them fools after recognizing that a Martial Universe expert’s control of power exceeds anything a Titled Douluo could match 2 3 5.

His loyalty to his teacher persists through public humiliation and mounting evidence against the teacher’s theories. He defends Yu Xiaogang after his beating and later insists that Lin Dong needs his tactical guidance, even when the other Shrek members no longer support that assessment 20 21 28.

Tang San also displays class prejudice and vindictiveness. Mistaking Qing Tan for a servant, he endorses the idea that Ma Hongjun could eventually have her killed. By contrast, threats to his parents leave him openly distraught: he cries, collapses, vomits blood, and begs helplessly before the screen 16 17 18 36.

Abilities & Skills

Purple Demon Eye

A mental cultivation technique Tang San uses while observing the sky screen and assessing unfamiliar powers 1 8.

  • Can see through some illusions, but has not demonstrated the tangible spiritual attacks used by Martial Universe Talisman Masters 8.
  • Is used alongside his hidden weapons as one of his principal advantages over other Douluo Soul Masters 18.
  • Cannot discern the operation of Lin Dong’s black vortex, even when pushed to its limit 34.
  • Tang San admits it could not defend against the spiritual skull attack absorbed by Lin Dong; he believes direct contact would destroy his brain 34.

Hidden Weapons and Poisons

Tang San carries Tang Sect hidden weapons and possesses extensive poison knowledge. Before a possible selection by the sky screen, he spends three days coating his deadliest weapons with potent poison 7 13.

  • Initially believes that even powerful foreign experts will die if his poison enters their bodies 7.
  • Recognizes that a spiritual attack could destroy his soul before he has time to launch a hidden weapon 9.
  • Concludes that Talisman Masters could stop his projectiles in midair and potentially redirect them against him 18.
  • Identifies limited energy capacity and dependence on physical penetration as weaknesses against spiritual treasures 32.

Tang Sect Secret Arts

Tang San retains several cultivation and combat techniques from the Tang Sect 31 33.

Technique Documented use or limitation
Mysterious Heaven Skill Provides internal energy. Tang San concludes that it cannot penetrate the Yuan Power defenses displayed during Lin Dong’s battle 33.
Mysterious Jade Hand Serves as his comparison for physical toughness; he judges Lin Dong’s body-refining method to make Lin Dong a hundred times tougher 31.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track A movement technique. Tang San calculates that its speed would not let him escape the area covered by Lin Dong’s giant-finger attack 33.
Tang Sect Poison Scripture Contains medicinal and poison records, but cannot help him identify the carbonized root shown during Ning Fengzhi’s appraisal test 38.

Twin Martial Souls

Tang San possesses Twin Martial Souls, though the supplied scenes do not identify them individually 31.

  • When imagining himself facing Lin Dong’s Great Desolate Imprisoning Heaven Finger, he concludes that he would not even have time to release them 31.

Combat Analysis

Tang San evaluates tactics, energy properties, attack coverage, and changes in an opponent’s behavior 1 13 33.

  • Recognizes Li Si’s adaptability as a better survival strategy than the arrogance shown by stronger explorers 11.
  • Distinguishes Dugu Bo’s biological poison from the naturally occurring yin fiend qi used in the Martial Universe 13.
  • Identifies Lin Langtian’s altered gaze, bearing, and spiritual energy as signs of soul possession rather than a simple change of cultivation method 33.
  • His predictions are less reliable when defending Yu Xiaogang: he dismisses Lin Dong’s chances against Lin Langtian and is subsequently proven wrong 28 30 31.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — Worn at his waist; Tang San touches it while preparing for possible selection and again when comparing his equipment with spiritual treasures 7 18.
  • Poison-coated hidden weapons — Prepared over three days as a contingency against Martial Universe experts 7.
  • Godly Zhuge Crossbow — One of the Tang Sect weapons he compares unfavorably with spiritual treasures and Talisman Master techniques 18.
  • Rainstorm Pear Blossom Needles — Another hidden weapon he fears could be stopped or redirected through spiritual power 18.
  • Buddha’s Fury Tang Lotus — Described as the strongest hidden weapon in his possession; he nevertheless judges it insignificant beside Lin Dong’s destructive martial art 31.

Relationships

  • Yu Xiaogang — Teacher. Tang San continues defending his intelligence and theories despite private doubts and repeated public failures 2 20 21 28.
  • Tang Hao — Father. Tang San discovers his concealed identity through the broadcast and is devastated by his humiliation, death, and later defeat during another selection 11 16 17 35 36.
  • Ah Yin — Mother and the Blue Silver Emperor. Tang San desperately fears for her survival after she is selected while still in plant form 17 18.
  • Dai Mubai and Oscar — Shrek companions who rush to support him when he collapses after Tang Hao’s death 17.
  • Ma Hongjun — Fellow Shrek member. Tang San supports retaliation against Qing Tan after accepting the mistaken belief that she is merely a servant responsible for Ma Hongjun’s punishment 16.
  • Dugu Bo — A senior whose poison expertise Tang San respects. His defeat forces Tang San to reconsider the effectiveness of Douluo’s toxins 13.
  • Lin Dong — A distant subject of Tang San’s criticism and analysis. Lin Dong’s victories repeatedly overturn Tang San’s expectations about cultivation gaps, resources, and the value of Yu Xiaogang’s advice 28 30 31 35.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Early Sky-Screen Broadcasts

Tang San initially supports Yu Xiaogang’s attempts to explain away the explorers’ defeats. He attributes unfamiliar displays of strength to special techniques and struggles to accept that someone his own age could kill a Soul Ancestor with one punch. Privately, however, he begins recognizing the scale and rigor of the Martial Universe’s cultivation system 1 2 3 6.

Ghost Douluo’s defeat exposes a particular vulnerability: spiritual attacks can bypass physical defenses and threaten the soul directly. Tang San realizes that his Purple Demon Eye and hidden weapons do not provide the security he had assumed 8 9.

Li Si’s successful entry into cultivation further changes his assessment. Tang San understands the significance of a system that requires neither Martial Souls nor Soul Rings, and concludes that adaptation matters more than blindly asserting Douluo superiority 11.

Tang Hao’s First Expedition

Tang Hao’s selection reveals his concealed strength to Tang San, briefly giving him renewed hope. That hope collapses when the Three-Horned Demon Rhino severely injures his father 11 12.

When the broadcast returns, Tang San sees rogue cultivators dragging Tang Hao toward a Nirvana Realm ruin to test its lethal formations. Lin Langtian then uses both the captors and Tang Hao as expendable probes, throwing them into the gate’s sealing formation. Tang Hao is reduced to ashes, and Tang San subsequently vomits blood and collapses 16 17.

Ah Yin’s Selection

Still weakened by his father’s death, Tang San sees Ah Yin selected while she is a vulnerable blade of Blue Silver Grass. He protests hysterically, briefly reassures himself that her cliffside landing may be safe, and then watches a Red-Armored Pig approach her 17.

Ling Qingzhu kills the beast but identifies Ah Yin as an unusual plant rich in life essence and takes her away as spirit medicine. Tang San is relieved that his mother survives, yet fears she may eventually be refined into a pill. Yu Xiaogang tries to console him with the possibility that a super sect’s medicinal garden could improve her cultivation conditions 18.

Yu Xiaogang’s Failures and Lin Dong’s Victory

Tang San attempts to preserve Yu Xiaogang’s reputation after his teacher is beaten and reduced to cleaning dung. He later argues that Lin Dong’s refusal to accept the teacher’s guidance will lead to defeat against Lin Langtian 20 21 28 30.

Lin Dong’s performance dismantles those predictions. Tang San successively confronts body refinement beyond Mysterious Jade Hand, martial arts beyond his hidden weapons, and spiritual treasures beyond Tang Sect casting methods. His analysis of soul possession remains perceptive, but he admits that his own spiritual defenses could not withstand the attacks involved 31 32 33 34.

Afterward, Tang San expects clan rules to suppress Lin Dong, only to see the clan’s highest authority reward him with resources and a competition place 35.

Tang Hao’s Later Selection

Despite his earlier confirmed death, Tang Hao appears again on the seventh explorer list. Tang San watches him confront a Nirvana Realm Ancient Dragon Ape, whose physical strength stops the Great Sumeru Hammer without injury 17 35.

Tang Hao’s Ring Detonation also fails: the ape shatters his Martial Soul and tramples him into the bedrock. Tang San falls to his knees and frantically kowtows while his father’s survival remains uncertain 35 36.

Ning Fengzhi’s Appraisal Test

During Ning Fengzhi’s examination at the Myriad Gold Auction House, Tang San studies a charred root using the Purple Demon Eye. He admits that neither its appearance nor the Tang Sect Poison Scripture gives him a way to determine its grade or medicinal properties. Ning Fengzhi subsequently succeeds in the appraisal 38.
