Background

Yu Xiaogang originated from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Although expelled, he retained considerable pride in its reputation and its celebrated Beast Martial Soul 5.

At Shrek Academy, he was recognized as Grandmaster and taught Tang San. He had devoted his life to Martial Soul research, proposed the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul, and considered himself the continent’s foremost theoretical authority 1 11 20. His reputation extended beyond Shrek: Hu Liena recognized him immediately when she encountered him in Lin City 28.

Appearance

  • Build and face: An aged, thin, frail-looking man, repeatedly described as having a shriveled body 19 20.
  • Characteristic bearing: Frequently clasps his hands behind his back and raises his chin while presenting himself as an inscrutable expert 1 19 28.
  • After his imprisonment: Wears filthy coarse-cloth clothing and becomes covered in demonic-beast dung while performing menial labor 28.
  • Injuries: Repeated beatings leave his face swollen and bruised; the mine overseer knocks out one of his front teeth 20.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is intensely protective of his intellectual reputation. He repeatedly treats unfamiliar powers as variations of Douluo’s Martial Soul system, even when the broadcasts contradict him. He explains away a Nirvana Realm expert’s abilities as a concealed fire-attribute Martial Soul and claims that Nirvana Realm is merely another name for Titled Douluo 5.

His worldview places great importance on innate Soul Power, Martial Souls, and bloodline. He dismisses commoners without these advantages as permanently worthless, then suffers a breakdown when Li Si begins cultivating without a Martial Soul 10 11. His maxim that there are “no useless Martial Souls, only useless Soul Masters” also serves as part of the authoritative image he presents to prospective followers 28.

Under threat, his grandiose bearing gives way to expediency. At the Mad Blade Martial Hall, he first invents a friendship with Lin Dong, then offers to help kill him when Wu Yun pretends the hall is hostile to the Lin Family 21. Rejection also provokes resentment: after Lin Dong dismisses him, Yu Xiaogang eagerly anticipates his death in the clan competition 30. Lin Dong’s successful counterattack finally prompts doubt about his supposedly invincible theories 31.

Abilities & Skills

Luo Sanpao

Yu Xiaogang summons Luo Sanpao, a plump, pale-purple, piglike Martial Soul, accompanied by two Hundred-Year Soul Rings 19.

  • Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao: On the command “Fart like thunder,” Luo Sanpao inflates its belly and releases a stream of foul yellow gas toward its target 19.
  • Demonstrated limitation: An early Earth Origin Realm mine overseer disperses the gas with the First-Grade martial art Through-Back Fist, then defeats Luo Sanpao with the same punch 19.
  • Backlash: Luo Sanpao’s forced dispersal makes Yu Xiaogang vomit blood and sends him flying backward 19.

Martial Soul Theory and Tactical Instruction

Yu Xiaogang bases his authority on the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul and claims expertise in training disciples and defeating opponents above their level 1 20.

  • Advocates identifying flaws in an opponent’s moves and using tactics to compensate for inferior cultivation 20.
  • Offers to design a special training plan for Lin Dong before the Lin Clan competition 20 28.
  • Claims his theories could double a Yang Yuan Stone mine’s output, but receives no opportunity to demonstrate this 19.
  • Fails to account for cultivation without Martial Souls, the Martial Universe’s martial arts system, and later soul-related phenomena 11 13 34.

Persuasion and Bluffing

Yu Xiaogang repeatedly uses confident explanations to reassure Shrek’s students and attempts to secure patronage through claims of theoretical expertise 5 20 28.

  • His comparison of Nirvana Realm to Titled Douluo temporarily restores several students’ confidence, though Tang San privately questions it 5.
  • Invoking Lin Dong’s name briefly prevents Mad Blade Martial Hall disciples from attacking him 21.
  • Wu Yun exposes his fabricated connection through a false claim about the hall’s relationship with the Lin Family 21.

Equipment & Tools

  • Iron pickaxe: Issued by the Lin Family’s mine overseer for extracting Yang Yuan Stones. Its recoil tears the skin on his hands when he begins working 19 20.
  • Iron shovel: Used to load demonic-beast dung into a cart during his later forced labor in Lin City 28.

Relationships

  • Tang San — His disciple and staunchest defender. Tang San repeatedly insists that otherworldly cultivators fail to recognize his teacher’s value, even after Yu Xiaogang’s failed appeals to the Lin Family and Lin Dong 1 20 28.
  • Dai Mubai — A Shrek student whose confidence Yu Xiaogang encourages. They reinforce each other’s claims about Douluo’s strength and the superiority of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon bloodline 5 7.
  • Flender — A Shrek Academy colleague who becomes furious after the Mad Blade Martial Hall incident, accusing Yu Xiaogang of throwing away the academy’s dignity 20 21.
  • Yu Tianming — A younger blood relative from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Yu Xiaogang confidently supports his attempt to suppress a Thunder-Horned Flood Dragon, then collapses after his defeat 5 6.
  • Lin Zhentian and Lin Xiao — Reject his offer to guide Lin Dong. Lin Zhentian instead tells the overseer to have a physician examine his head and not let him delay the mining 20.
  • Wu Yun — Master of the Mad Blade Martial Hall. Exposes Yu Xiaogang’s lies and assigns him to clean the Fire Python Tiger’s dung under threat of death 21.
  • Lin Dong — The prospective disciple or patron Yu Xiaogang repeatedly targets. Lin Dong rejects his unsolicited offer of guidance and orders Little Flame to clear him from the street 20 21 28.
  • Hu Liena — Recognizes him during his confrontation with Lin Dong but hides rather than acknowledge him, fearing he might recognize her 28.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Commentator on the Sky Screen

Yu Xiaogang initially watches the broadcasts from Shrek Academy and declares Douluo’s Soul Power system nearly perfect. He predicts that the level-fifty-two Soul King Zhang Hu should be able to protect himself in the unfamiliar forest, only to be shocked when Zhang Hu’s Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Skill is broken immediately 1 2.

Further defeats provoke increasingly strained explanations. He attributes a Nirvana Realm expert’s golden flames to a concealed Martial Soul, then predicts that Yu Tianming’s dragon bloodline will force a carriage-pulling Thunder-Horned Flood Dragon to submit. Instead, the beast shatters Yu Tianming’s Martial Soul with a roar, leaving Yu Xiaogang slumped on the ground 5 6.

The broadcasts subsequently undermine the foundations of his research. Li Si enters cultivation without a Martial Soul, and the other world’s martial arts expose techniques outside Yu Xiaogang’s theoretical framework 11 13. Zhao Si’s initial success in cultivating Spiritual Power briefly revives his optimism, but that hope ends when an evil Talisman Master erases Zhao Si’s mind and turns him into a Talisman Slave 19.

Arrival at the Yang Yuan Stone Mine

Selected as an explorer, Yu Xiaogang is transported to a crimson mining mountain belonging to the Lin Family. He assumes that demonstrating Soul Master power and offering advice will secure him an overseer’s position. He approaches the local overseer and promises to double production through his theories 19.

The overseer instead orders him to mine ten Yang Yuan Stones daily. Yu Xiaogang retaliates with Luo Sanpao, but the overseer defeats his Martial Soul with one punch, beats him, and throws him into the pit. Within ten minutes of arriving, he becomes a forced mining laborer 19.

Failed Appeal to the Lin Family

Overhearing Lin Zhentian and Lin Xiao discuss Lin Dong’s approaching competition against Lin Langtian, Yu Xiaogang offers to devise a winning training plan in exchange for honored-guest treatment. The family leaders dismiss him, and the embarrassed overseer beats him again 20.

Denied food for failing his mining quota, Yu Xiaogang decides to seek patronage at the Mad Blade Martial Hall. He escapes over the mine’s fence during the night and reaches Qingyang Town at dawn 20.

Mad Blade Martial Hall

Yu Xiaogang enters the hall through a dog hole to avoid being dismissed as a beggar. In the backyard, he encounters its captive Fire Python Tiger and narrowly avoids being eaten when disciples distract the beast with meat 20 21.

To avoid punishment for trespassing, he claims to be Lin Dong’s friend and strategist. Wu Yun tests him by falsely claiming hostility toward the Lin Family. Yu Xiaogang immediately abandons his story and offers plans to kill Lin Dong and seize the family’s holdings 21.

Wu Yun reveals that the two factions are close allies. He orders Yu Xiaogang confined to the beast pen to clean the tiger’s dung, threatening to have him fed to it if he neglects the work. The broadcast leaves Shrek’s students humiliated and Flender openly furious 21.

Attempt to Recruit Lin Dong

Later sent to Lin City as an additional menial laborer, Yu Xiaogang hears that Lin Dong has arrived for the clan competition. He escapes his workplace, blocks Lin Dong’s path, and offers to become his teacher or strategist, guaranteeing victory over Lin Langtian 28.

Lin Dong refuses to engage and orders Little Flame to clear the road. The tiger’s gust throws Yu Xiaogang more than ten meters into a sewage ditch. Guards recapture him afterward and drag him back to clean ten beast pens 28.

Watching the Clan Competition

From Lin City’s rear courtyard, Yu Xiaogang watches the competition while continuing his labor. Resentful over his rejection, he welcomes the prospect of Lin Dong’s defeat and insists that refusing his theories will prove fatal 30.

His satisfaction collapses when Lin Dong punches apart Lin Langtian’s attack. Yu Xiaogang begins questioning his theories, then later admits he cannot explain the apparent change of soul and voice during the battle through Martial Soul Possession 31 34.
