Background / History
Clan Origins and the Golden Iron Triangle
Yu Xiaogang is the son of a former chief of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. He leaves the clan long before the main story and becomes the Golden Iron Triangle’s Horn of Wisdom. His bond with Flender and Liu Erlong includes an incident in which he risks his life to save both from an enemy 2 3 27 110.
His early romance with Bibi Dong begins in Xilu City. Spirit Hall’s members look down on his poor talent and oppose their relationship. Qian Xunji sexually assaults Bibi Dong in an attempt to sever her attachment to Yu Xiaogang. Yu Xiaogang later fails to find her at a lantern festival and lacks the courage to seek the truth at Spirit Hall, leaving their separation unresolved 60.
After leaving Spirit City, he meets Liu Erlong and nearly marries her. Their relationship also fails to reach marriage, although she continues waiting for him for more than a decade 21 25 34.
Taking Li Ye as His Disciple
While visiting Nuoding City’s Spirit Hall Branch on business, Yu Xiaogang is persuaded by Ma Xiunuo to help awaken children’s martial souls. He notices Li Ye concealing a second martial soul and recognizes that the revealed spear has mutated. When Li Ye’s soul power shatters the testing crystal, he publicly reports innate level eight to keep the boy’s talent from attracting dangerous attention 1 4.
Yu Xiaogang asks Ma Xiunuo to entrust Li Ye to him, offering individualized theoretical guidance and the assistance of his rank-73 Soul Saint friend, Flender. Li Ye accepts him as his teacher and chooses an inexpensive restaurant over a luxurious meal to preserve money for cultivation resources. Deeply moved, Yu Xiaogang resolves to give everything necessary to help his disciple reach the world’s pinnacle 2 3.
A second test reveals Li Ye’s innate level-18 soul power. Yu Xiaogang then takes him to Star Dou Great Forest with Flender and recommends a 600-year War Rhino for his first soul ring. When absorption lasts twelve hours, he fears that his theoretical judgment has harmed the child. He nevertheless refuses to interrupt while Li Ye shows no signs of failure; the absorption ultimately succeeds 4 5 6.
Teaching Tang San
At Nuoding Academy’s entrance, Yu Xiaogang recognizes the inconsistency between Tang San’s apparently ordinary Blue Silver Grass and innate full soul power. After Li Ye supplies an additional condition for twin martial souls—the parents’ martial souls must be closely matched in quality—Yu Xiaogang deduces Tang San’s Blue Silver Emperor heritage and inadvertently reveals that his mother was a hundred-thousand-year soul beast 8.
Although he initially has no intention of taking another disciple, he accepts Tang San after the boy formally pays his respects. His decision is influenced by his admiration for Tang Hao, and his strongest parental attachment remains with Li Ye 8 9 11.
During Tang San’s first soul-ring hunt, Li Ye reminds him to account for the Blue Silver Emperor’s inherited attributes. Yu Xiaogang revises his recommendation toward holiness and vitality rather than poison. He later helps subdue the Life Source Deer and, following Tang Hao’s voice transmission, retrieves its Head Soul Bone and teaches Tang San to absorb it 11 13 14.
Letting Go of Liu Erlong
When Liu Erlong announces that she has found true love, Yu Xiaogang writes a tear-stained farewell letter wishing her happiness. He decides to abandon his romantic expectations and devote himself to raising Li Ye 27.
Flender later discovers that Liu Erlong’s lover, “Feng Yeli,” is Li Ye and spends a year trying to prepare Yu Xiaogang for the news. Yu Xiaogang eventually reveals that he already learned the truth after glimpsing one of Li Ye’s letters while covering the sleeping boy with a blanket. Although initially hurt, he refuses to make his disciple sacrifice his happiness. He accepts the relationship but chooses not to attend the wedding, fearing his presence would sour the occasion 43 46.
Shrek Academy and a New Relationship
At Shrek Academy, Yu Xiaogang reviews recruitment records and designs individualized soul-ring plans for newly enrolled students. His recommendations are so exacting that Li Ye and Zhao Wuji struggle to locate the specified beasts. During this period, Li Ye gives him Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma to address his cultivation bottleneck 44 45 46.
Before the Soul Master Tournament finals, he leaves team leadership to Li Ye, Flender, Liu Erlong, and Qin Ming. He wishes to avoid the painful memories associated with seeing Bibi Dong and instead pursues a middle-aged female teacher from Skywater Academy with whom he gets along well. A year and a half later, Li Ye is still teasing him about the relationship’s slow progress 78 96.
Night Emperor Pavilion
At the hundred-day banquet, Yu Xiaogang welcomes guests alongside Flender and receives congratulations as a grandfather figure. Though only a Soul Ancestor, he is treated respectfully because he personally raised Li Ye, now a Limit Douluo expected to become a god 110.
When Yu Yuanzhen asks him to return to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, Yu Xiaogang declines. He prefers to help develop his disciple’s faction and watch the next generation grow up. He also reveals that he has found his other half, while leaving open the possibility of visiting the clan someday 110.
He subsequently serves as the Night Emperor Pavilion’s deputy pavilion master and standing acting pavilion master, seated beside Li Ye during its leadership meeting 113.
Appearance
- Initially unkempt: Has a stubble-covered face and appears listless from a distance; Li Ye bluntly asks him to shave and wash 2 3.
- Improved grooming: Tidies his appearance under Li Ye’s supervision, surprising Flender 3 4.
- Formal attire: Wears a festive red suit while welcoming guests to the hundred-day banquet 110.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang initially sees Li Ye as an opportunity to prove that he is more than an unsuccessful cultivator who can only recite theory. That ambition develops into an openly parental attachment: he cooks for Li Ye, worries intensely over dangerous training, and recognizes the grief beneath the boy’s cheerful behavior 3 6 7 12.
His pride in his scholarship can make him show off or speak without considering the consequences, most notably when he exposes Tang San’s origins. Nevertheless, he remains intellectually curious and willing to reconsider his conclusions when Li Ye provides a better explanation 8 11.
He is hesitant in romance, but ultimately refuses to let his regrets control his disciple’s life. By the time Li Ye enters Shrek Academy, Yu Xiaogang no longer needs the boy to prove anything on his behalf; he wants him to grow stronger happily, live freely, and love without repeating his teacher’s mistakes 43 46.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Soul Theory
Yu Xiaogang compiles extensive research into martial souls and soul beasts, publishing Martial Soul Ten Core Competencies Theory 36 42.
- Soul-ring selection: Matches soul-beast attributes and likely skills to a martial soul’s needs, as demonstrated by his War Rhino recommendation for Li Ye 5.
- Individual absorption limits: Accounts for soul power, spiritual power, and physical constitution rather than treating ordinary rank-based limits as universal 42.
- Twin martial soul analysis: Recognizes unusual combinations of martial soul quality and innate soul power, though Li Ye supplies a condition missing from his initial reasoning 8.
- Research limits: His accumulated basic theory exceeds that of almost every soul master, but his weak cultivation prevents him from exploring higher-level theory firsthand 36.
Teaching and Cultivation Planning
- Gives daily instruction in martial soul theory and soul-beast knowledge, which Li Ye later applies independently 36.
- Prepares detailed, individualized soul-ring plans for Shrek’s recruits 45 46.
- Teaches soul-ring absorption, soul-bone absorption, and the properties of rare abilities such as the Life Source Deer’s incarnations 5 12 14.
- Warns his disciples against complacency and emphasizes that talent does not replace effort 4 7.
- Revises Tang San’s development plan to prioritize the Blue Silver Emperor’s vitality and holiness, identifying poison as a potential long-term obstacle 11.
Luo Sanpao
- Accompanies Yu Xiaogang during the awakening ceremony 1.
- Is summoned defensively when a Mandala Snake approaches the group 12.
- Stops the Life Source Deer with a fart attack after Tang San briefly obstructs it, creating an opening for Li Ye 13.
- No named skills or soul-ring configuration for Luo Sanpao are provided in the supplied passages.
Equipment / Items
- Twenty-four-jade belt: A soul tool Yu Xiaogang has kept for years before giving it to Li Ye. Liu Erlong later recognizes the belt and realizes that Li Ye is his disciple 4 21.
- Soul-power testing crystals: Uses crystals to assess children’s innate soul power and privately confirms Li Ye’s level-18 result after the first crystal shatters 1 3 4.
- Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma: Receives it from Li Ye to strengthen his foundations and help overcome the rank-29 bottleneck. He initially refuses because he would rather preserve valuable resources for his disciple 44.
- Pope Token: A token Tang Hao once gave him; Li Ye later uses it to enter the Pope’s Palace 81.
