As the final section lit up, the system was finally fully activated.
But...
"What do you mean, Deadpool insisted on posting a bounty? You can force these things through?"
Lu Wen scratched his head. He felt that this system seemed a little sketchy.
"Accept!" With a slight shift of thought, Lu Wen accepted the bounty Deadpool had insisted on posting and closed the system panel.
Before he could look for where that little Bambi was now, the red-and-gold tin can flew right up to him.
And as he landed, he blasted two Chitauri grunts to death with two shots from his repulsors.
Tsk... my points...
After silently grumbling to himself, Lu Wen looked at Iron Man before him.
The two stared at each other for two seconds before Tony's faceplate lifted, revealing a slightly tired but still flashy face.
"What're you staring at?"
"Huh?" A strange expression crossed Tony's face. Why could he understand those words, yet they felt so odd? They seemed a little different from "What are you looking at?" But somehow, he understood?
[Universal Language Pack! Whatever you say, or whatever others say, it will be forcibly translated so you can understand!]
"Ahem! All right, if you don't mind my asking, Mr. Asian Gentleman with a miniature nuclear reactor stuffed into his chest, who do you work for? S.H.I.E.L.D.? The military? Or some private organization I've never heard of?"
"Would you believe me if I said I was just passing through?" Lu Wen spread his hands.
"Passing through?" Tony glanced at the still-smoking Leviathan corpse on the ground, then at the faint orange patterns of light lingering on Lu Wen's chest...
"Passing through the site of the Battle of New York in an ordinary T-shirt and jeans, carrying two steel pipes? And casually taking out a Leviathan along the way?"
"You might not believe this, but I was originally just out shopping."
"Shopping... in New York?" Tony repeated the word with a peculiar expression.
"Yep."
"New York, which is being invaded by aliens?"
"That's why I said 'originally.'" Lu Wen shrugged.
Tony stared at him for a few seconds, seemingly trying to judge whether the man had been scared senseless.
But he noticed a small detail about Lu Wen: energy blasts had burned two holes in his clothes, yet the exposed skin had only faint red marks. It hadn't even broken.
This was no ordinary person.
"All right, Mr. Shopping." Tony's repulsor lit up, then went dark again. "Whoever you are, this area is still an active combat zone. I suggest you..."
"Find somewhere to hide?" Lu Wen finished.
"No, I was going to say help me shoot down a few aircraft, but since you're volunteering to hide, then I..."
"I'll fight! But how much are you paying?" Lu Wen cut him off decisively.
Tony: ...
"Young man, I thought you were a responsible champion of justice..."
"Then you thought wrong~ Strictly speaking, none of this has a damn thing to do with me."
Lu Wen shrugged, looking utterly unconcerned.
Two more Chitauri grunts suddenly appeared, howling as they charged toward them on an aircraft. Without another word, Lu Wen picked up a piece of rebar from the ground and hurled it, smashing the jet ski-like alien craft apart.
"What if I hired you?" Tony was getting a little anxious. He felt he had already wasted two minutes here. Every person missing from the center of the battlefield meant more danger!
Besides, they really were a little short-handed. This young Asian man who had appeared out of nowhere seemed like a pretty capable fighter! Getting him to help would be ideal.
"Sure, but I won't do it if the price is too low."
"One million, up front! I'll pay extra afterward depending on how things go. How's that?"
"Deal! I trust the famous Tony Stark wouldn't stiff me over such a small amount."
Lu Wen readily accepted this verbal check, because for someone like him, an undocumented nobody with nothing to his name, getting this much was already pretty good.
Tony breathed a sigh of relief. With such a paltry asking price, he really had no reason to renege.
Three more Chitauri aircraft screamed overhead, strafing the blocks to the east.
"Now that we've got a deal, let's go! Over there, follow me." Blue light flared from beneath Tony's feet as he rose into the air.
Lu Wen started running after him.
Although he couldn't understand why the physical abilities granted by Compound V still left Soldier Boy so painfully slow, he wasn't that much of a blockhead.
Crushing a chunk of concrete underfoot, Lu Wen shot forward with a whoosh, right behind the low-flying Tony.
If running didn't work, he could jump! His powerful bursts of strength could launch him a long way with each step! This was much faster than running.
Working together, the two cleared aircraft and grunts from nearly half a street. Tony fired precise bursts from his repulsors and miniature missiles in the air, while Lu Wen hurled steel pipes and chunks of debris he picked up on the ground. Occasionally, his chest glowed orange as he blasted out a shock wave to take down a Leviathan.
After every shock wave, Lu Wen went through a brief period of weakness. Tony soon noticed the pattern.
"That ultimate of yours has a cooldown?" Tony called from midair.
"Of course! You know, no matter how strong a man is, he always needs a little rest after going all out~"
"Good point. Then I'll leave this one to you." Tony increased the thrust of the rockets beneath his feet, pulling away from another Leviathan.
After losing Tony as its target, the Leviathan lunged straight at Lu Wen.
"You bastard!"
He had only just fired a blast. His cooldown wasn't over yet!
With no other choice, Lu Wen timed a huge leap, dodging the gaping mouth while jumping onto the Leviathan's head.
Using brute force, he tore a large chunk of armor off the top of the Leviathan's head, then drove the fragment hard into the central nervous system of its brain.
With a mournful "Wooo," the enormous alien body crashed onto the street.
"Beautiful! Guys, look, I hired us a pretty capable ally!"
Hearing Tony's cheers over the team channel, the others nearby began looking for him.
Soon, near that red-and-gold figure, they spotted a young Asian man in somewhat tattered clothes standing atop a fallen Leviathan.
"I don't know who you are, but I'm glad you came to help."
Captain Steve fought his way over to Lu Wen at a run and greeted him.
"Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to say hello, Captain America."
As Lu Wen spoke, he tore a Chitauri soldier apart with his hands, picked up the Lasgun that fell to the ground, and began spraying fire into the sky.
Honestly, he was starting to enjoy this exhilarating slaughter!
As for the incoming laser fire, he dodged what he could and took whatever he couldn't on his back. It couldn't hurt him anyway.
"Holy shit! Are you really human?"
Thor, the God of Hammers, happened to pass by, his hammer crackling with electricity, and witnessed the scene.
"Strictly speaking, I'm superhuman," Lu Wen replied.
In the center of the battlefield, Lu Wen rampaged around, mercilessly harvesting Chitauri soldiers' lives. And no matter whom he passed, whenever they spoke to him, he always replied with a couple of words, making sure no remark went unanswered.
Except with Hulk.
But the enemies kept multiplying, and the few of them really were struggling. Even Lu Wen was getting a little overwhelmed. These alien bugs seemed to think he was hard to deal with and were concentrating their forces specifically to surround and eliminate him.
An unknown number of minutes later...
Just as Lu Wen was swinging two Chitauri corpses around, cosplaying a spinning top as he battered enemies inside their encirclement, the soldiers around him suddenly collapsed.
"Huh? Did their Bluetooth disconnect?"
Lu Wen stopped and looked up at the sky.
Above, the blue pillar of energy had vanished, and the blue spatial portal was rapidly closing.
It looked like the battle was over. He should go find that little Bambi and do his mission.
His enhanced super vision let him clearly see Tony, who had lost power after delivering the nuclear missile, in free fall.
"Tsk... well, I'm already here!"
