Appearance
- Face: Initially described as slightly tired but still flashy; later appears stubbly during a video call 3 38.
- Armor: Wears a recognizable red-and-gold suit during the Battle of New York 3 4.
- Chest: Previously depended on an electromagnet to manage embedded shrapnel. Following surgery, Venom completely heals the chest wound in less than a minute 42 43.
Personality
Tony meets danger and discomfort with flippant humor. Shortly after regaining consciousness following the Battle of New York, he asks whether anyone kissed him, then thanks Lu Wen for catching him. His exchanges with Lu Wen frequently become teasing contests over age, money, and their respective accomplishments 4 35 43.
His generosity often comes packaged as a business decision. He calls employing Lu Wen an “investment,” provides payment and practical help, and later funds research in exchange for access to technology and future returns. He nevertheless reserves the right to withdraw funding if the partnership disappoints him 7 8 13.
Tony’s curiosity repeatedly overrides his willingness to rest. He becomes absorbed in unfamiliar inventions, resists medical advice, and initially refuses to acknowledge his anxiety. Although he complains about Baymax’s supervision, JARVIS confirms that Tony is fond of the healthcare robot 35 36 38.
Abilities & Skills
Engineering and Reverse Engineering
Tony studies technology acquired by Lu Wen from other worlds, reproducing it and adapting it to arc-reactor power supplies, improved materials, and more convenient controls 13 35 38.
| Project | Documented Results |
|---|---|
| Laser Wrist Blades | Reduces the bracers to nearly half their original size, adds heat-resistant alloy casings and miniature arc reactors, and extends the blades to roughly one meter. Normal use requires no recharge for about three weeks 38. |
| Neural Sensors | Converts Hiro’s control technology into adhesive patches; supplies twenty sensors with a 1,000-meter operating range 38. |
| Micro-Robot fabrication | Upgrades the production equipment to manufacture robots in three sizes, with interchangeable cutting-head modules 38. |
| Green Goblin equipment | Provides machinery for bombs and throwing blades using lighter materials, together with material specifications for finding substitutes 38. |
| Gliders | Builds three differently sized models powered by arc reactors. Their precision requirements prevent mass production by the compact fabrication machine 38. |
- Specialization limit: Tony explicitly states that biological research is not his specialty and seeks Banner’s assistance with the Green Goblin Serum 38.
- Ongoing projects: Receives Silent Sparrow’s flawed portal prototype and documentation, then later prioritizes nanotechnology and a proposed Symbiote-compatible adaptive armor system. Completed nano armor is not shown in the supplied chapters 35 43.
Armored Combat
Tony fights airborne and ground targets with repulsors and miniature missiles, coordinating with other Avengers and newly recruited allies 2 3.
- Recognizes Lu Wen’s post-blast cooldown after observing him in combat 3.
- Continues fighting with only one armored arm and one armored leg by supplementing them with Swarm Robots 40.
- Deploys multiple Mark suits under JARVIS’s control during the oil-terminal battle 42.
- His contemporary armor is vulnerable to Killian’s extreme heat, which allows Killian to tear through several suits in rapid succession 42.
Swarm Robot Control
Neural sensors allow Tony to direct Micro-Robots through thought, giving him protection and tools independent of a complete suit 39 40.
- Shields himself and helps evacuate others during the Malibu attack 39.
- Forms surviving robots into a belt concealed around his waist 40.
- Uses robots to break restraints, trip guards, and attack enemies while armor components arrive 40.
- The robots stop operating when he loses consciousness, leaving their effectiveness dependent on his ability to control them 40.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Battle of New York and Recruiting Lu Wen
Tony investigates the powerful energy blast Lu Wen uses to destroy a Leviathan. After questioning the unfamiliar fighter, he hires him for one million dollars and fights alongside him against the Chitauri. When Tony falls after delivering the nuclear missile through the portal, Lu Wen catches him before Hulk can intervene 2 3 4.
After the battle, Tony houses Lu Wen in Stark Tower and investigates his lack of identity records. He does not believe Lu Wen’s explanation that he crossed over from another world, but offers continuing work and warns him that S.H.I.E.L.D. will investigate. He later provides a bank card containing five million dollars, a phone, clothing, and help securing a Manhattan apartment 4 7 8.
Otherworldly Technology Partnership
Lu Wen returns with Green Goblin equipment and serum, asking Tony to reproduce the machinery, improve the serum, and assist with the Osborn family’s problems. Tony agrees to invest under conditions that allow him to stop funding an unsuccessful project 13.
After Lu Wen’s next extended absence, Tony receives Baymax, Hiro’s neural-control technology and Micro-Robot production line, Silent Sparrow’s portal prototype, and Laser Wrist Blades. He rapidly produces upgraded equipment while keeping a batch of Micro-Robots for himself 34 35 38.
Trauma and the Malibu Attack
Tony’s experience beyond the New York wormhole leaves him with nightmares, anxiety, severe sleep disruption, and a reliance on his armor for reassurance. Baymax assesses a possible post-traumatic stress response and recommends therapy, but Tony initially denies that he needs treatment and conceals his condition from Pepper 35 36 38 39.
After Tony publicly provokes the Mandarin, his estate comes under missile and gunfire attack. Baymax’s preparations and the Swarm Robots improve his chances of survival. Tony escapes the collapsing house but loses consciousness underwater; JARVIS carries him to safety in Tennessee 39 40.
Defeating Killian and Chest Surgery
Tony follows leads to Miami and is captured after confronting the supposed Mandarin. Using concealed robots and arriving armor components, he escapes and fights through the guards. He later joins Rhodes at Killian’s oil terminal, where Lu Wen takes on the Extremis soldiers while Tony pursues their leader 40 41.
Killian destroys several of Tony’s suits before Pepper intervenes. Tony and Pepper ultimately defeat him using missiles and Pumpkin Bombs, then join Rhodes, Happy, and Lu Wen for Christmas at Lu Wen’s home 42.
Tony subsequently chooses surgery to remove his chest shrapnel. Although he claims his psychological problems are cured, Baymax’s assessment still identifies health concerns. Venom heals the surgical wound, and Lu Wen briefly alarms him with a prank about the operation’s outcome 42 43.
Nanotechnology and Extremis Research
Lu Wen proposes combining nanotechnology with Symbiote properties to create adaptive armor. Tony accepts the idea and a Venom sample, agreeing to prioritize nano armor and Extremis rather than attempting every project alone 43.
Over the following four months, Banner works on the Green Goblin Serum while Maya Hansen perfects Extremis at Tony’s new New York research site. Tony and Banner then present Lu Wen with fifteen syringes of stable, perfected first-generation Extremis 43.
