Background
Jiraiya is one of the Third Hokage’s three students and a celebrated member of the Konoha Sannin. His reputation as a hero of the Second Shinobi World War makes him a significant deterrent against outside threats to Konoha 23 43.
He trained Minato and previously brought him to Mount Myōboku. Nagato and Konan also regard Jiraiya as their teacher 19 26 42. His own training at Mount Myōboku took years and allowed him to use Sage Mode, although he never mastered it completely 25.
Before his return to Konoha, Jiraiya traveled in search of the Child of Destiny foretold by the Great Toad Sage, gathering material for his writing along the way. He occasionally checked on Naruto from a distance but mistakenly believed the boy was doing well 23 24. His dislike of the village leadership’s methods, including its treatment of the Uchiha, contributed to his reluctance to remain in Konoha 24 28.
Appearance
Jiraiya has long white hair, which he can harden and launch as needles 23 27.
- Incomplete Sage Mode: Red markings surround his eyes and cross his face; his pupils become horizontal slits, and parts of his body acquire toadlike features 26.
- Disguises: He uses the Transformation Technique to pass as an ordinary villager, though Feng Yao’s Sharingan sees through the disguise 23 24.
Personality
Jiraiya places Konoha’s interests above his personal disagreements with its leadership. He recognizes that the Third Hokage enabled Danzo’s persecution of the Uchiha, yet still insists that he will oppose anyone who harms the village 24 25. This loyalty leaves him deeply conflicted when Hiruzen orders an attack on the clan: he feels ashamed, but ultimately participates 33 35 36.
His frivolous behavior contrasts with his standing as a powerful shinobi. Immediately after returning to Konoha, he causes an uproar at the women’s bathhouse while supposedly “gathering material.” Despite his abilities, he has no interest in becoming Hokage or acquiring political power 23 29.
Jiraiya can acknowledge defeat without treating a spar as a fight to the death. After exhausting his options against Feng Yao, he concedes their wager rather than continue a hopeless battle 27. His affection for Naruto is similarly genuine, but paternalistic: guilt over the boy’s suffering prompts him to offer protection and training while concealing painful truths about both Naruto’s parents and Konoha’s actions 42.
Abilities & Skills
Incomplete Sage Mode
Jiraiya uses Mount Myōboku’s Sage Mode with Fukasaku and Shima’s assistance. His incomplete control of natural energy produces visible toadlike changes 25 26.
- Assisted activation: Fukasaku and Shima sit on his shoulders and help regulate natural energy 26.
- Preparation: During his match with Feng Yao, a clone buys time for him to enter Sage Mode 26.
- Sustained combat: Mount Myōboku’s abundant natural energy and the sages’ support make a prolonged battle a viable strategy 27.
- Limit: His Sage Mode does not provide a successful answer to Feng Yao’s intangibility 27.
Toad Summoning and Cooperative Combat
Much of Jiraiya’s strength comes from fighting alongside Mount Myōboku’s toads 36.
- Giant summons: He calls on Gamabunta, Gamahiro, and Toad Ken in battle 26 27.
- Reverse Summoning Technique: He brings Feng Yao to Mount Myōboku and uses reverse summoning to return to the shinobi world 25 28.
- Battlefield restriction: Concern for damage to Konoha prevents him from unleashing his full strength against Fugaku and Orochimaru 36.
Rasengan
Jiraiya uses Rasengan through both clones and direct attacks 26.
- Clone assault: Multiple clones charge Feng Yao with Rasengans 26.
- Sage Art: Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan: He attempts a powerful close-range strike from behind Feng Yao, but the attack passes through his intangible body 26 27.
Fire and Oil Techniques
Jiraiya combines fire techniques with toad oil and coordinated elemental attacks 26.
- Fire Release: Great Flame Bullet: His opening attack against Feng Yao launches an enormous fireball 26.
- Sage Art: Goemon: Jiraiya floods the battlefield with toad oil, Shima ignites it with Fire Release, and Fukasaku intensifies the flames with Wind Release 26.
Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon
Jiraiya hardens his long hair and fires thousands of white strands as a dense barrage of needles 27.
- Used alongside the sages’ fire and wind attacks.
- Fails to strike Feng Yao because the needles pass through his intangible body 27.
Toad Confrontation Chant
Jiraiya fights in coordination with Fukasaku and Shima’s sound-based genjutsu 27.
- The sages release waves of genjutsu through sound.
- The technique has no effect on Feng Yao during their match 27.
Shinobi and Intelligence Skills
- Transformation Technique: Allows him to evade the women pursuing him after the bathhouse incident 23.
- Body Flicker Technique: Used to reach the Third Hokage during the attack on the Uchiha 33.
- Intelligence gathering: He is renowned for gathering information, although Feng Yao criticizes his ignorance of Naruto’s living conditions 24.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return to Konoha
The Third Hokage sends for Jiraiya as tensions with the Uchiha escalate. His letter claims that Feng Yao has taken control of Naruto, leading Jiraiya to approach the Uchiha clan head cautiously 15 23.
At Ichiraku Ramen, Jiraiya observes Naruto behaving happily and freely around Feng Yao. Once the children leave, Feng Yao urges him to investigate Naruto’s life and confronts him over Konoha’s persecution of the Uchiha. Jiraiya cannot refute the accusation that Hiruzen’s tacit approval enabled Danzo 24.
Mount Myōboku Wager
Feng Yao proposes a match: a Jiraiya victory would bind the Uchiha not to undermine Konoha’s interests, while a Feng Yao victory would earn a visit to Mount Myōboku. Jiraiya agrees to take him there regardless of the outcome, assuming he wants to learn Sage Mode 25.
Despite using Sage Mode, giant toads, and coordinated attacks with Fukasaku and Shima, Jiraiya cannot overcome Feng Yao’s intangibility and Susanoo-wielding clones. He concedes, then learns that Feng Yao does not intend to stay for Sage Mode training 26 27.
Before leaving, Jiraiya receives the Great Toad Sage’s warning of major events, many enemies, and a white figure beneath a lone red moon. He takes the prophecy seriously and promises the worried sages that he will exercise greater caution 27 28.
Attack on the Uchiha
After reporting his defeat, Jiraiya challenges Hiruzen’s hostility toward the Uchiha and leaves disappointed when his teacher refuses to answer 28. When the attack begins, Hiruzen invokes their teacher–student bond to silence his objections and orders him into battle 33.
Jiraiya eventually attacks Fugaku, only to face Fugaku and Orochimaru together. Restricted by the danger his full-strength techniques would pose to Konoha, he is overwhelmed 36.
He subsequently attempts to placate Feng Yao and condemns Danzo’s selfishness. Nevertheless, he opposes the Uchiha’s departure, treating it as desertion. Feng Yao’s devastating Susanoo demonstration leaves him unable to prevent the clan from leaving 37 38.
Naruto’s Teacher
After the Uchiha leave, Jiraiya rescues Naruto from boys beating him for defending Sasuke. Recognizing that Naruto has endured similar treatment before, he feels that he has failed Minato and Kushina and resolves to change Konoha 42.
He withholds the truth about the attack on the Uchiha and tells Naruto that his parents are away on a secret mission. Revealing that he taught Naruto’s father, he offers to become Naruto’s teacher 42. His acceptance gives Naruto a protector and provides the weakened village with a powerful shinobi likely to remain nearby 43.
