Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Marshtomp 44 In a flashback, Gongping rescues him from disaster-stricken ruins in Hoenn. He becomes Gongping’s Pokémon after receiving treatment.
Swampert 2 Already evolved by his debut; the evolution itself is not shown. Defeats Liu Ping’s Golduck using Ice Punch and otherwise purely physical attacks.

Background / History

Swampert lost his parents in a disaster in the Hoenn Region while he was still a Marshtomp. Gongping found him breathing beneath the wreckage and rescued him, searching for medicine despite his own injuries. Marshtomp remembered the relief in Gongping’s eyes when he awoke and came to acknowledge him as his trainer for life 44.

After his capture, Gongping proposed that they grow stronger together. Swampert’s deepest wish became helping Gongping stop grieving and remaining beside him in the place of another Pokémon whose identity is not given in the passage 44.

Personality

Swampert combines a savage fighting style with exceptional composure and intelligence. He can defend himself without waiting for commands, recognize dangerous attacks, and choose when to intervene in a larger battle. The narration identifies him as the wisest of Gongping’s six core Pokémon, regularly securing the rear while looking for an opportunity to break the enemy’s formation 2 3 38 42.

Despite his aggression in combat, he is patient enough to conceal himself and strengthen rather than force an unfavorable exchange. Against Greninja’s troublesome Protean Ability, he prioritizes evasion, deception, and preparation for a decisive strike 42.

Swampert is not good at expressing his feelings, but shares a deep, largely unspoken understanding with Gongping. Their time together has earned him his trainer’s complete trust 44.

Abilities & Skills

Physical Strength and Close Combat

Swampert’s species is described as capable of pulling rocks weighing more than a ton. Gongping’s Swampert supplements that strength with grappling, shoulder charges, rapid changes of direction, and accurately targeted blows 2 3 43.

  • Independent defense: Smashes the ground to throw rock fragments into Golduck’s Hydro Pump without receiving an order 2.
  • Grappling: Seizes Tentacruel by a poisonous spike and overpowers its attempts to escape 3.
  • Speed and reactions: Avoids repeated Hydro Pumps and later catches Greninja’s water blade barehanded 2 42.
  • Imperfect restraint: Cannot pull back his strength in time during the Tentacruel battle, causing several tentacles to snap. The officials rule the injury accidental 3.

Ice Manipulation

Swampert uses Ice Punch as a tool for terrain control, protection, deception, and precision attacks—not merely as a striking move 2 3 42 45.

  • Battlefield control: Freezes water left by Golduck’s Hydro Pump, restricts its movement, then shatters the ice into flying fragments 2.
  • Precision: Forms a thin ice blade during the Golduck battle. Bruno observes that it could have severed Golduck’s head had Swampert not held back 2.
  • Protective frost: Covers his body in frost to briefly blunt Tentacruel’s corrosive Acid Spray 3.
  • Weapon sabotage: Freezes Blastoise’s cannon barrels, causing them to rupture when Blastoise attempts another Hydro Cannon 3.
  • Ice Ball: Controls two rapidly spinning Ice Balls against Greninja, displaying greater ease with the move than Gongping’s Alolan Sandslash 43.
  • Emergency stabilization: Freezes a mudslide vortex during the Seafoam Islands collapse, creating a place for Gongping and his Pokémon to stand 45.

Water Techniques and Torrent

Swampert uses flowing water to reinforce movement, defense, and close-range impacts 3 21.

  • Waterfall: Surrounds himself in powerful currents, using their momentum to drive grapples and body blows. Bruno identifies the impact, rather than the water alone, as the real finishing force 3.
  • Defensive water coat: Meets Tyranitar’s sand claw with a Waterfall coating that produces a powerful rebound during training 21.
  • Rapid Water Gun: Blocks Incineroar’s flames to protect Scizor, firing so quickly that Greninja almost fails to react 41.
  • Boiling water and steam: Spreads heated water around himself during the Greninja duel, forcing his opponent back through dense steam 42.
  • Torrent: Supports his final Waterfall against Blastoise after he has been injured 3.
  • Limit: His initial Waterfall loses a direct clash with Blastoise’s Hydro Cannon, throwing him several meters away 3.

Curse and Stomping Tantrum

Swampert uses Curse to raise his attack and defense while waiting for a decisive opening. These are temporary battle enhancements rather than an evolution or permanent rank increase 42 44.

  • Protected setup: Conceals himself underground while strengthening during his duel with Greninja 42.
  • Repeated boosts: Has completed two Curses before Greninja attacks in earnest, then creates an opening to begin a third 43.
  • Six-Curse finish: Reaches six boosts after Greninja stops engaging him 44.
  • Stomping Tantrum trap: His opponent mistakes the first attack for Earthquake and lifts his Pokémon clear. Once they land, Swampert delivers a second Stomping Tantrum, doubled in power because the first missed 44.
  • Destructive result: The second stomp shatters the Seafoam Islands’ main peak area and knocks out Pangoro and Muk 44.

Tactical Support and Deception

Swampert’s usual team role is to protect the rear, assist Tyranitar with battlefield changes, and identify the moment to break through opposing defenses 42.

  • Substitute feint: Combines Substitute with Ice Punch to create a false body that collapses into icy water and entangles Greninja 42.
  • Coordinated defense: Guards Dr. Fuji while Tyranitar supports Scizor and Lucario during the laboratory attack 38.
  • Covert tracking: Plants a tracker on the masked attacker during combat, allowing Gongping to pursue them toward the Seafoam Islands 39.
  • Fine ground control: Creates soft sand beneath Gongping and his allies as they land during the final battle 44.

Sensory Traits

  • Murky-water vision: Can see objects even in cloudy water 2.
  • Storm detection: His whiskers can sense approaching storms 2.

Equipment / Items

  • Tracker — Secretly attached to the masked attacker during the Cinnabar laboratory battle; its signal provides Gongping with their route toward the Seafoam Islands 39.

Relationships

  • Gongping — Rescuer and lifelong trainer. Their bond begins with Gongping treating him as an injured Marshtomp and develops into complete mutual understanding 44.
  • Tyranitar — Training partner and battlefield collaborator. Swampert helps support the terrain arrangements surrounding Tyranitar’s central position 21 42.
  • Scizor and Lucario — Fellow core teammates. They coordinate in the laboratory defense, and Swampert later intercepts flames aimed at Scizor 38 41.
  • Greninja — Opponent who takes a keen interest in Swampert’s intelligence, composure, and speed. Their Seafoam Islands duel becomes a contest of deception, close combat, and accumulated power 42 43.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Elite Four Qualification

Swampert defeats Liu Ping’s entire three-Pokémon lineup, securing Gongping’s appointment as Kanto’s Sandstorm King 2 3.

Opponent Outcome and decisive actions
Golduck Defeats Liu Ping’s intended answer to the sandstorm team through frozen terrain, Ice Punch, and sustained physical attacks 2.
Tentacruel Breaks through Acid Spray with protective frost, then combines Waterfall’s momentum with Ice Punch. The resulting injuries prompt an unsuccessful appeal 3.
Blastoise Survives Hydro Cannon, sabotages its barrels with ice, and finishes it with a Torrent-supported Waterfall 3.

The victories establish Swampert as Gongping’s trademark Pokémon. Although the League prefers its Kanto Elite Four members to carry Pokémon from designated regions, it specifically encourages Gongping to retain Swampert as a mainstay 4.

Regional King Tournament

Swampert enters the final matchup against Will in perfect condition after Ran Niao defeats Lileep. His victory over Ran Niao secures Gongping’s overall 6–5 win 27.

Cinnabar Laboratory Attack

Left behind to help protect Dr. Fuji’s institute, Swampert fights alongside Tyranitar, Scizor, and Lucario. He attempts to strike the masked attacker directly, but an enormous Drapion intercepts him. His covertly planted tracker nevertheless makes pursuit possible after the attacker escapes with the cracked Golden Gem 36 38 39.

Seafoam Islands Battle and Collapse

Swampert protects Scizor before engaging Greninja, using deception and Curse to prepare his finishing attack. After Greninja ceases pressing him, he reaches six Curse boosts and delivers the Stomping Tantrum combination that devastates the main peak 41 42 43 44.

During the ensuing collapse, he works with Claydol to redirect and freeze part of the mudslide. This creates temporary footing for Gongping and the other Pokémon, though Articuno ultimately intervenes to save Gongping when the defensive sand wall fails 45.
