| Name | Lucario (路卡利欧) |
| Species/Race | Pokémon — Lucario |
| Type | Fighting / Steel 24 |
| Trainer | Gongping 18 |
| Affiliation | Gongping’s Sandstorm Team 39 |
| Occupation/Role | One of Gongping’s six core Pokémon; psychic specialist and frontline attacker 18 42 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 18, “Lucario” 18 |
Background
Lucario possessed exceptional mental strength from childhood, leading Gongping to give it specialized psychic training. By its battle against Giovanni, it practiced Calm Mind continuously—even inside its Poké Ball 18.
Gongping caught Lucario and Scizor at roughly the same time. The two developed a longstanding rivalry, with their training matches becoming particularly fierce whenever they faced each other 21.
Personality
Lucario favors meticulous calculation and layered deception. It habitually combines mental illusions with high-speed afterimages, misleading its opponent through two different methods at once. This complicated fighting style irritates Scizor, which prefers direct, overwhelming attacks 24 25.
Usually composed under pressure, Lucario remained expressionless when facing Nidoking and unperturbed by Spoink’s unleashed psychic power. Its patience has limits, however: it disliked Spoink’s false smile and became impatient when Slowbro appeared unresponsive to its attacks 18 24 25.
Abilities & Skills
Calm Mind
Lucario uses constant Calm Mind training to develop unusually powerful psychic abilities despite its Fighting/Steel typing 18 24.
- Maintains its training inside its Poké Ball and frequently meditates cross-legged while floating 18.
- Strengthened itself twice during its victory over Will’s Spoink 24.
- Used Calm Mind to reflect Spoink’s psychic power back onto it, trapping it in a nightmare 24.
- Could not overcome Slowbro’s Amnesia, which raised its Special Defense faster than Lucario strengthened itself 25.
Confusion and Psychic
Lucario combines telekinetic control with attacks on an opponent’s consciousness 18.
- Attack manipulation: Stopped Nidoking’s Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, and Ice Beam simultaneously, then compressed and redirected their energy 18.
- Defense and movement: Creates a thin psychic barrier and uses telekinesis to maneuver through the air 18 21.
- Mental intrusion: Psychic can invade a restrained opponent’s consciousness and generate disruptive illusions; this secured its victory over Nidoking 18.
- Detection: Used Confusion to locate Pangoro through obscuring purple mist, allowing Scizor to attack 44.
- Limits: Slowbro’s blank mental world resisted intrusion and rebounded Lucario’s psychic power. Greninja’s changing types also rendered repeated psychic attacks ineffective 25 38.
Illusions and Deception
Lucario can manipulate an opponent’s perception while concealing its actual movements 24.
- Made Spoink believe it had destroyed a Shadow Ball while Lucario moved behind it with the real attack 24.
- Deceived Will through his psychic synchronization with Spoink 24.
- Created a nightmare in which Spoink appeared to be decapitated; the apparent injury was an illusion, not a physical wound 24.
- Uses high-speed afterimages to mislead spectators separately from the mental illusions affecting its opponent 24.
Aura and Aura Sphere
Aura supplements Lucario’s mental strength, allowing it to anticipate attacks a few seconds ahead and evade their trajectories 21 24.
- Forms Aura Sphere in its hands and releases it as a powerful projectile or beam 18 38.
- Combined Aura Sphere with captured flames and surrounding electricity during its clash with Nidoking 18.
- Forced Cacturne away from Tyranitar with an Aura Sphere 38.
- Its Aura Sphere was shattered by Nidoking’s tail attack and passed harmlessly through opponents that adopted a Ghost typing through Protean 18 36 41.
Shadow Ball
Shadow Ball serves as both a direct attack and a means of supporting allies 24 43.
- Landed a surprise strike on Spoink from behind 24.
- Bombarded Slowbro from multiple directions, attempting to exploit Shadow Ball’s chance of lowering Special Defense 25.
- Fired a barrage that opened an escape route for Scizor during Pangoro’s surprise Fire Punch 43.
Close Combat and Resilience
Although primarily a special attacker, Lucario remains a capable close-range fighter, combining punches and kicks with psychic control 18 25 38.
- Fractured Nidoking’s arm in a head-on clash, though Lucario suffered severe burns in return 18.
- Held prolonged exchanges with Greninja, but struggled against its disciplined movements and Protean Ability 38.
- Its Steel typing allowed it to withstand Muk’s poisonous snowfall without fearing the poison 44.
- Slowbro’s psychic restraints and repeated Body Slams prevented it from escaping and eventually knocked it unconscious 25.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Battle Against Giovanni
Gongping challenged Giovanni to keep him occupied and prevent Team Rocket from interfering with Mewtwo on New Island. Lucario faced Giovanni’s battle-hardened Nidoking, redirecting its elemental attacks before entering a brutal close-range exchange. Despite extensive burns, Lucario defeated Nidoking by invading its consciousness with Psychic 18.
Exhibition Match Against Will
After Gongping and Will recalled their sleeping Hippowdon and Jynx, Lucario entered against Spoink. Its layered illusions deceived both Pokémon and Trainer, and its reflected psychic assault left Will suffering backlash through his connection with Spoink. Lucario then knocked Spoink out 24.
Will answered with Slowbro, whose Amnesia-protected, apparently blank mind countered Lucario’s mental manipulation. Unable to penetrate its defenses or escape its psychic bindings, Lucario fell to repeated Body Slams. Gongping subsequently recognized that Slowbro had also strengthened its physical power with Curse 25.
Defense of the Cinnabar Island Laboratory
Lucario was stationed with Tyranitar, Scizor, and Swampert to protect Dr. Fuji while Gongping battled Lu. During the masked woman’s raid, it confronted Greninja but could not consistently damage it because of Protean. Tyranitar and Scizor supported Lucario as the attackers pressed into the laboratory; the woman ultimately escaped with the cracked Golden Gem 36 38.
Battle of Seafoam Islands
Lucario joined Gongping’s full Sandstorm Team against the Yin-Yang-Faced Freak. Alongside Scizor and Mega Salamence, it formed the main attacking force, fighting Drapion, Pangoro, and Alolan Muk 41 42.
Despite their rivalry, Lucario and Scizor coordinated closely. Lucario saved Scizor from Pangoro’s ambush, then later used Confusion to track Pangoro through the battlefield’s poisonous mist while Scizor attacked with Bullet Punch 43 44.
Relationships
- Gongping — Trainer who developed Lucario’s childhood mental talent through specialized psychic training and considers it one of his six core fighters 18.
- Scizor — Longstanding rival with a contrasting fighting style. Scizor respects Lucario’s strength despite disliking its reliance on calculation; the pair cooperate effectively in group combat 21 24 25 43 44.
- Tyranitar — Teammate who supported Lucario against Greninja and shielded it from a concealed Water Shuriken attack 38.
